We chatted to Spider-Man reboot director Jon Watts about his previous film, Cop Car, and his comic book inspirations…
Jon Watts’ next job is no secret – he’ll be directing the Tom Holland-starring Spider-Man reboot, for Marvel Studios and Sony. They signed him up off the strength of his last film – his second feature, Cop Car.
Cop Car is something of a hybrid between a road comedy and a crime thriller, where Kevin Bacon stars as a crooked cop on the hunt for the two young runaways that have taken a joyride in his eponymous vehicle.
Ahead of Cop Car’s disc release in the UK (and it's available on demand now), we chatted to Jon Watts on the phone about the film, his directorial debut (the underrated 2014 horror flick, Clown) and the comic book inspirations behind his next project…
So, we’re here to talk about Cop Car – which you wrote and directed.

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

In returning to Middle-Earth for the second "Hobbit" adventure, "The Desolation of Smaug," Oscar-nominated sound editors Brent Burge and Chris Ward were given a gift with the very hot Benedict Cumberbatch. But when he was first announced, they were apprehensive that his overexposure on "Sherlock" and "Star Trek Into Darkness" might make his voice too familiar. But that all changed when he showed up and got down on his hands and knees, played around with his voice, and became the dragon. "It was an opportunity to experiment with Benedict," offers Ward. "Early on, during the first 'Hobbit' film, we made some recordings about what the quality of the dragon's voice might be like. You could almost say it was like an audition. We had some very good results with some new miking arrangements that we'd been thinking about. Obviously with Gollum, Kong, and now Smaug, these digital characters seem to...

The ceremony is over here in London, bringing together some of the finest and most talented people in the film industry under the same roof for one night. The BAFTAs are this country’s highest honour in film, and they have handed out their awards for the 66th time to those whom they deem the most deserving in the past year in film.
And since Ben Affleck is one of my favourite filmmakers of all time, I have been in a brilliant mood tonight, because he’s won (and very much earned) Best Director for Argo, and taken home the Best Film prize alongside his co-producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov. The Guardian film team predict who will win what at this year's ceremony
On Friday Xan Brooks assessed the field of this year's Bafta contenders and found it "a hazy huddle of frontrunners, all seemingly bobbing back and forth in front of the finish line".
Lincoln is first among equals with 10 nominations. Les Misérables, Life of Pi, Skyfall and Argo all crowd in behind.
The awards momentum has swung from Life of Pi to Lincoln to Argo over the past few weeks. In a competition this close there could be upsets. There should be tears. There must be winners.
So here's what we think will take home scary award masks this year. We've listed all the nominees. Our predicted winners are in bold.

Awards season is here once again, and Les Misérables, Lincoln, Li of Pi, Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty are some of the many films that have been nominated for the 2013 BAFTA Awards. Actresses of the moment Anne Hathway and Jennifer Lawrence have both been nominated — Anne for Best Supporting Actress for Les Mis and Jennifer for Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook. You go girls!
Lincoln leads the nominations with a whopping 10, with stars Daniel Day Lewis (he is so going to win!), Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field all receiving recognition. Director Steven Spielberg, however, got totally snubbed!
From Les Mis, the only actors nominated are Anne and Hugh Jackman. Argo and Life of Pi also received also nine nominations, while Skyfall recieved eight. And Ben Affleck got not one,...

At this point in awards season, it’s pretty hard to surprise us. The Oscar nods are going to be announced tomorrow morning, and we’re pretty sure the top of the list will look like this: Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Les Miserables, Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, Django Unchained, Life of Pi … So anyway, we could be inclined to yawn when looking at the nominations for the British Academy Film Awards (a.k.a. the BAFTAs), as the L films — Lincokn, Les Miz and Life of Pi — are in the lead. That’s why we like looking at the details, like the Outstanding British Film category, which gives Skyfall, Anna Karenina and Seven Psychopaths a chance to shine. There’s also the Rising Star award, nominated by a panel but voted on by the public. This year Elizabeth Olsen, Suraj Sharma (Pi), Andrea Riseborough (W.E.), Juno Temple (Dark Knight Rises...

Lincoln led all films with 10 BAFTA nominations, but director Steven Spielberg was not among the five directors recognized by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Daniel Day-Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones, Sally Field, cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, screenwriter Tony Kushner, and composer John Williams were among the Lincoln landslide, but the British Academy opted to reward Amour director Michael Hanake and Django Unchained auteur Quentin Tarantino, even though neither of those films were mentioned for Best Film.

The BAFTA film nominations are in. You can read the list of nominees in full here...
We are now well into awards list season. We've already had the list of Razzie nominees, and the actors and filmmakers up for an Oscar nod will be revealed tomorrow. In the meantime, here's the British Academy's list of nominees, which features a strong showing from Lincoln, Les Mis and even Skyfall - a surprising inclusion, given that Bond movies are usually overlooked at these sorts of things.
Make what you will of the list that follows, but we're more than a little disappointed to see The Pirates: In An Adventure With Scientists missed out of the animation category, and we're pretty sure Ben Wheatley's Sightseers deserved some sort of mention, too.
The BAFTA awards ceremony will take place on Sunday 10th February, after which there'll be face painting and a meat raffle.

Real Spit: Killa Kyleon may still be making a name for himself in rap, but the Houston Mc is no rookie.
The seasoned Southern spitter got his start running alongside Big Pokey, Chris Ward and DJ Screw's Screwed Up Click, before really making an impact with Slim Thug's group Boss Hogg Outlawz. It's his gruff vocal tone, butter flow and hard-nosed lyrics that make Killa Kyleon a fan favorite. On his latest mixtape, Candy Paint N Texas Plates 2, Killa puts it all on display.
With the tape's 21 soul-drenched tracks, Killa Ky hooks up with notable producers like Lex Luger, Cookin' Soul and Cy Frye to lay his sound bed.

Wolverine has been the go-to guy for years when it comes to magazines or comic book series that want a quick sales boost. Put him on the cover, and issues are practically guaranteed to fly off the shelves. These days, though, U.S. President Barack Obama is giving Logan a run for his money when it comes to selling comics.
This August, Bluewater Productions will publish “Political Power: Barack Obama,” one of several comics featuring notable figures from recent US elections. Along with the Obama comic, Bluewater also has comics in the works featuring Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton and, well… even the Obama’s dog, Bo.
And it’s that last comic, “Puppy Power: Bo Obama,” that prompted one of the funnier exchanges I’ve ever had with an interview subject — in this case, “Barack Obama” author Chris Ward.

It’s no secret that putting U.S. President Barack Obama on the cover of your comic these days is like printing money — no matter how connected the cameo or what the issue contains, it’s going to sell like crazy. So, while comics featuring anyone associated with the president and the 2008 campaign remain hot sellers, it seemed only natural that one particular part of the Obama family receive his own comic. (And to be honest, I’m surprised it took this long.)
“Puppy Power: Bo Obama” hits shelves in September from Bluewater Productions, and promises an “insider’s look at the White House” courtesy of the Obamas’ new dog, Bo. Written by Paul J. Salamoff with art by Emmy Award winning Disney and Warner Brothers artist Keith Tucker, the comic will be aimed at young readers.

Us President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and 'First Dog' Bo Obama will be the next famous faces to feature in comic books from Bluewater Productions.
The president and vice-president are the newest additions to the Political Power series that showcases influential people in politics, through biographies in comic book format.
Pooch-in-power Bo, the Obama family's new Portuguese water dog who moved into the White House last month, will star in his own comic book written for children.
Political Power: Barack Obama was painted by award-winning artist Azim Akberali and written by Chris Ward. The book will be available in August with two different covers.
Political Power: Joe Biden was written by Wey-Yuih Loh and drawn by Jonathan Rector and will be released in September. It takes a close look at Biden's earlier years as a Us senator and the emotional rollercoaster he faced in becoming America's youngest member of congress.
