Viola Davis received her first ever Grammy nomination on Tuesday morning for narration of her audio book “Finding Me.” Since she has already won at the Oscars, Emmys and Tonys, the actress could become the 18th person to become an Egot champion if she wins at the Grammys in a few weeks. And it might be a bonanza of awards success coming soon as Davis has a strong film contender for Oscars and other events with “The Woman King.”
The previous champions of Egot are (in chronological order of achievement): composer Richard Rodgers, actress Helen Hayes, actress Rita Moreno, actor John Gielgud, actress Audrey Hepburn, composer Marvin Hamlisch, orchestrator Jonathan Tunick, writer/director/composer Mel Brooks, director Mike Nichols, actress Whoopi Goldberg, producer Scott Rudin, composer Robert Lopez, singer and actor John Legend, composer Tim Rice, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, composer Alan Menken and actress/singer Jennifer Hudson.

John Legend took the stage at the Emmy Awards on Monday to honor the stars who left us during the past year. The “In Memoriam” segment was one of the highlights of the night, with the Egot winner performing his new song “Pieces.”

Anthony Anderson presented Legend and the segment, saying, “It never feels like the right time to say goodbye to a loved one, a friend or a cherished icon.”
He added. “To quote Shakespeare, ‘All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players, they have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts.’ As we acknowledge the legends within our industry will pass on, we celebrate all that they created and shared with the world. May they rest in peace and power.”

Mary Poppins is practically perfect in every way – but it wasn’t her perfection that drew Julie Andrews to the role. She says it was the vaudevillian feel of the music.
In a new interview with Vanity Fair, in which Andrews talked through her career leading up to her latest release, “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” the beloved actress revealed that when Walt Disney originally asked her to star in “Mary Poppins,” it was the zaniness of the music that really drew her in, rather than the character itself.
“It was a brand new thing in my life that I’d never done before. It was for Walt Disney, of course, and the songs in ‘Mary Poppins’ had a kind of Vaudeville quality to them,” Andrews explained. “I think it’s what attracted me to the role, because all that kind of ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ and ‘Jolly Holiday’ music was very much...

Who will be included for the special “In Memoriam” segment for Sunday night’s Oscars 2022 ceremony? For almost all other Academy Awards productions since the 1990s, producers typically select 40-50 people from the various branches. The 2021 segment had close to 100 people in a particularly fast-paced three minutes that was not very well-received since many of them were only on screen for a second or two.

Sidney Lumet’s harrowing film is a true-life account of a NY narcotics detective- turned government informant; its length and intensity can be emotionally overpowering. Treat Williams is the idealistic cop who blows up his whole life and ends up betraying all the people he hoped to protect. He doesn’t seem to understand the ruthless, opportunistic nature of ‘systemic reform’ as he goes from good guy to the object of hate for both crooks and cops, and a target for the very same system that welcomed his help. The Wac made an excellent choice with this one — it’s one of the most deserving, underappreciated films of the early 1980s.

A spoonful of therapy helps just about everything go down. Just ask Julie Andrews. While sitting down on Monday's The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the living legend opened up about how director Mike Nichols inspired her to seek out therapy following her heartbreaking divorce from Tony Walton in 1967. "Sadly, I separated from my lovely first husband," Andrews told host Stephen Colbert. "And separations were always inevitable and the marriage was over and my head was so full of clutter and garbage. Believe it or not, it was Mike Nichols who really tipped me into wanting to go to therapy." "He was so sane, and funny and clear," continued the Mary...

Sets crafted for television have not traditionally been known for their glamour, says “Fosse/Verdon” (FX) production designer Alex Digerlando.
“TV was always about characters interacting, and sets were something to fill the background,” he notes. “You got close-up and medium shots and you needed some kind of background to make it feel not random. To ground the action.”
But as the action has ramped up, so have expectations for production design, even though networks don’t always make extra room in their below-the-line budgets, leaving the art department with the same funds whether a show is contemporary or period.
That leads production designers including Digerlando — along with his fellow designers Michael Whetstone (ABC’s “The Kids Are Alright”) and Jason Sherwood (Fox’s “Rent”) — to come up with some pretty creative solutions. Whetstone’s Cleary family home on the recently axed “Kids” is an impressive set, a full three-bedroom structure...

François Truffaut’s adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s dystopian, illiterate future looks better than ever, but the scary part is that some of its oddest sci-fi extrapolations seem to be coming true. It’s a movie that truly grows on one. The Bernard Herrmann music score is one of the composer’s very best.

The Academy is enhancing the V&A’s exhibition and will include more than 145 costumes from over 60 lenders. The Academy’s presentation will add more than 30 costumes to this landmark show, including Jared Leto’s costume from Dallas Buyers Club (Kurt and Burt, 2013) – a recent acquisition to the Academy’s collection – as well as costumes from such recent releases as The Hunger Games (Judianna Makovsky, 2012), Django Unchained (Sharen Davis,...

The production partnership of John Brabourne (the Eton-educated seventh Baron Brabourne) and Richard B Goodwin (who started out as a teenage tea boy with the Rank Organisation) is one of the most interesting in the British cinema. Its highlights include David Lean's A Passage to India and the two-part Little Dorrit, but its most popular works were the period Agatha Christie pictures that brought all-star casting and unfashionably high production values to the whodunit and set new standards for the string of TV productions that followed. Brabourne's father-in-law Lord Mountbatten helped secure the rights from Dame Agatha, and the three best are the Hercule Poirot mysteries in this Blu-ray set. Ustinov plays the Belgian sleuth both in John Guillermin's Death on the Nile (1978), scripted by Anthony Shaffer and superbly photographed by Jack Cardiff, and in Guy Hamilton's bland...

In my opinion, kid’s movies are among the best ever made but are often over-looked because they usually lack tragic drama or passionate physical romances, but that’s what makes them great. They are a fantasy escape into a world we’ve never seen but we all wish we had. And that’s what Mary Poppins did so brilliantly in 1964 and I don’t think that anyone anywhere can honestly say that they didn’t yearn for Mary to fly to their doorstep and teach them magic when they were little.

Set to ignite many a misconceived fashion editorial, The Hunger Games succeeds as pure costume delight because first and foremost it serves narrative. Judianna Makovsky has brought to life a new world, not created a magazine spread.
The film is based on a trilogy of novels by Suzanne Collins and centres around Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), who volunteers to take her sister’s place for the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death contest in the wilderness between 24 ‘tributes’ aged 12-18 with only one winner gaining his/her freedom. Julie Andrews has signed on to direct a new musical, based on the children's book she co-wrote with her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton.
The mother-daughter pair penned The Great American Mousical, which contains illustrations by Andrews' ex-husband and Emma's father Tony Walton, back in 2006 and now she's set to stage the theatrical adaptation of the book at the Norma Terris Theater in Chester, Connecticut later this year.
Zina Goldrich and Marcy Heisler will compose the music and lyrics and the choreography will be completed by Tony Award nominee Christopher Gattelli.
The Sound of Music veteran tells BroadwayWorld.com, "Emma, Tony and I had so much fun working on this book and are now overjoyed that it will come alive on the stage. I'm so blessed to be working with this creative team in adapting our book for the theatre."
The show is set to open on 8 November and run through 2 December.
The play marks the star's second turn at directing - Andrews previously oversaw a revival of The Boy Friend at the Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut in 2005.

Rhys Ifans, Anonymous The Art Directors Guild (Adg) 2011 nominations include a few surprises, most notably the omissions of Steven Spielberg's War Horse, Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life, Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar, Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and Francis Lawrence's Water for Elephants in the Period Film category; Kenneth Branagh's Thor and Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon in the Fantasy Film category; and Brad Bird's Mission: Impossible IV – Ghost Protocol and George Clooney's Producers Guild Award nominee The Ides of March in the Contemporary Film category. Julie Andrews' husband, "Pink Panther" creator Blake Edwards, has died at the age of 88. The director, writer and producer passed away at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California on Wednesday night, December 15 after suffering complications from pneumonia. Los Angeles — Blake Edwards, the director and writer known for clever dialogue, poignance and occasional belly-laugh sight gags in "Breakfast at Tiffany's," "10" and the "Pink Panther" farces, is dead at age 88.
Edwards died from complications of pneumonia late Wednesday at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, said publicist Gene Schwam. Blake's wife, Julie Andrews, and other family members were at his side. He had been hospitalized for about two weeks.
Edwards had knee problems, had undergone unsuccessful procedures and was "pretty much confined to a wheelchair for the last year-and-a-half or two," Schwam said. That may have contributed to his condition, he added.
At the time of his death, Edwards was working on two Broadway musicals, one based on the "Pink Panther" movies. The other, "Big Rosemary," was to be an original comedy set during Prohibition, Schwam said.

Julie Andrews' husband, Pink Panther creator Blake Edwards, has died at the age of 88.
The director, writer and producer passed away at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California on Wednesday night after suffering complications from pneumonia.
He had been hospitalised for two weeks and was already battling knee problems, according to his longtime publicist, Gene Schwam. The rep added Edwards had been "pretty much confined to a wheelchair for the last year-and-a-half or two".
His wife and other family members were by his bedside when he died.

He later established himself as a director, working with Audrey Hepburn to bring Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's to the big screen in 1961, before taking on Days of Wine and Roses in 1962.
But he will perhaps be best remembered as the comic genius behind the Pink Panther series, teaming up with Peter Sellers for six of the hit movies in the franchise.
His other comedy credits include 10, Victor/Victoria and black comedy S.O.B., all starring Andrews, his wife of 41 years.
In 2004, he was presented with an Honorary Academy Award in recognition of his extensive body of film work.
Edwards is survived by Andrews, his two children Jennifer and Geoffrey from his first marriage to Patricia Walker, and two adopted kids from Vietnam, Amelia Leigh and Joanna Lynne. He was also stepfather to The Sound of Music icon's daughter Emma, from her previous union to Tony Walton.

Courtesy: Charlie RoseLOS Angeles, California (X17online) - Oscar winning director Blake Edwards, husband of Julie Andrews and the man behind such classics as Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Pink Panther series, 10, The Days of Wine and Roses, and Victor/Victoria, died Thursday morning with Andrews and his adult children by his side. He was 88. After a turbulent 14-year marriage to former actress Patricia Walker, the famed director met Andrews while working with her on the 1969 musical Darling Lili. After the film wrapped, Edwards told People in 1977: "It seemed dumb not to admit we were in love," while Andrews revealed: "I kept telling him it wasn't going to work!" The couple were married for 40 years and resided in both Gstaad, Switzerland, and Malibu. Edwards was presented an honorary Oscar in 2004. He is survived by a daughter, Jennifer, an actress; son, Geoffrey, a writer, director and editor; Andrews's daughter (with her first husband,...

Blake Edwards, the master craftsman who gave the world such stylish screen fare as Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Pink Panther series with Peter Sellers, and Victor/Victoria with his wife Julie Andrews, died Thursday morning with Andrews and his grown children at his bedside, reports Variety. He was 88. No further details have been provided. Born in Tulsa, Okla., but with a grandfather and father in the Hollywood movie business, William Blake Crump (the name Edwards came later) practically had celluloid flowing through his veins. After graduation from Beverly Hills High and World War II duty in the Coast Guard, Edwards sold two scenarios for Westerns.

What happened in that proverbial stable? That is the mystery at the heart of Equus, a 1973 drama by Peter Schaffer now revived to stunning effect at Guild Hall in East Hampton. Memorable for the previous 2008 revival on Broadway starring Daniel Radcliffe, the bespectacled Harry Potter of film, this time the "known" actor is Alec Baldwin as the shrink with an interest in the classics, who envies a small town boy's passion. The John Drew Theater stage is at once a stable, a psychiatric hospital, Greek temple, auguring something primitive, carnal, and spiritual. Based upon a kernel of a true story, Equus is embellished psychologically, eroticized. This is a brave play that can feel dated, but the Guild Hall production gets it right. When asked about the decision to stage this play director Tony Walton said, Alec said he always...
