The new film by Pablo Larrain, El Conde, deals with Augusto Pinochet, the Chilean dictator, in an unexpected manner. The film reveals that Pinochet is a 250-year-old vampire, and you might think he died in 2006, but he is still very much alive, living in a secluded place on the outskirts of Chile. It’s a provocative idea, trying to bring out the satirical humor associated with dictatorships and the familial and political underpinnings surrounding Pinochet himself.
El Conde is filled with violence and gore, all hinting at the bloodshed during Pinochet’s 1973 coup and the human rights violations during his reign. By showing him as a vampire, a creature who feasts on human blood, the metaphor of politicians ‘sucking the soul’ out of people is nicely brought out in the open. Jaime Vadell delivers a striking portrayal of a vampirical spoof of Pinochet with an uncanny resemblance to the actual figure,...

Born on Nov. 25, 1915, Augusto José Ramón Pinochet would rise through the ranks of the Chilean military and, having become commander-in-chief of the nation’s army, lead a coup against the country’s president Salvador Allende in 1973. This would kick off Pinochet’s political reign — and reign of terror — for the next 17 years. He’d escape persecution for the countless crimes committed during his regime and was unrepentant about his dictatorship (what were mass graves of dissidents but more “efficient ways of burials?”) up until his death in 2006.

Traditionally speaking, vampire stories have boasted a unique kind of versatility that most other subgenres can only dream about. In the last decade alone, they've run the gamut of high-water marks like Taika Waititi's mockumentary "What We Do In The Shadows" and Jim Jarmusch's soulful "Only Lovers Left Alive" to epic lows such as "Dracula Untold," "Morbius," and, well, take your pick of literally any of the "Underworld" movies. 2023 alone has seen two "Dracula" adaptations debut with various degrees of success, but the last quarter of the year brings us the most distinct and boundary-pushing vampire flick, by far -- courtesy of one of the most unexpected sources imaginable.

Augusto Pinochet returns as a bloodsucking vampire – together with Margaret Thatcher – in El Conde, the Chilean director’s black comedy horror. He talks about his fascination with the dictator and why, despite his family ties, he feels empowered to keep telling stories about his country
Margaret Thatcher and Augusto Pinochet are vampires in the new film from the Chilean director Pablo Larraín. Literally so: El Conde (The Count) drapes them in black capes and has them fly over the city, biting the necks of their victims and tearing hearts out of chests. Pinochet, in particular, is voracious and insatiable. The monster likes all types of blood, Thatcher explains with all the cloying condescension of her race and her class. “But naturally English blood is his favourite.”
Larraín – a quick-witted, combative man in his mid-40s – has been fascinated by Pinochet for decades. As a child he watched him on TV and felt an instinctual aversion.

The Augusto Pinochet regime, which ruled Chile under an oppressive thumb with unspeakable human rights violations from 1973 to 1990, following the coup d’état that ousted Socialist president Salvador Allende, has been the subject of countless screen dramas. That includes a loose trilogy by Pablo Larraín, comprised of Tony Manero, Post Mortem and No, all of which observed the dictatorship from unique angles. But even by the director’s own distinctive standards, his return to the subject is a wild leap into irreverent originality, reimagining the deposed tyrant as a 250-year-old vampire on the verge of relinquishing eternal life.
Shot in ravishingly textured, crepuscular black and white by the great Ed Lachman, the Netflix film (opening Sept. 8 in theaters before streaming from Sept. 15) is as visually intoxicating and atmospheric as it is provocative, liberally mixing political satire with dark comedy and horror while examining a grim history that seems doomed to keep repeating itself.

Pablo Larraín’s string of mostly 20th century biographical dramas hits a pinnacle of audacious brilliance with El Conde (The Count), a madly inspired reinvention of events embedded in the notion that longtime Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet became a vampire who ultimately tires of life and wants out after living some 250 years.
After playing it relatively straight and serious in their biopics of Princess Diana, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Pablo Neruda, the director and his shrewd and brilliant playwright collaborator Guillermo Calderón let their imaginations go wild (albeit rigorously so), and return with a sensational creation overflowing with a rush of startling notions that put this alternative look at a sinister ruling family on a top shelf all its own. The new ten-episode Disney+ series"The Muppets Mayhem" sees the return of the psychedelic Muppet band The Electric Mayhem as they embark on a rip-roaring adventure to record their debut album. Their fearless bandleader Dr. Teeth is still behind the keys and Animal is still beating his drum kit into submission, with all the rest of the band getting back together to make magic happen once again. The long history of Muppets movies has always been filled with pop culture references and glorified celebrity cameos, but aside from "Muppets Haunted Mansion," they've largely avoided any direct nods to the horror genre.

All ten episodes of “The Muppets Mayhem“ dropped on Disney+ earlier this week, sending beloved Muppet band, The Electric Mayhem, on a musical journey to record their first album. In true Muppet style, the journey comes with a slew of notable cameos, including a shocking horror crossover we never would’ve anticipated in a million years.
A surprising uncredited cameo by director Peter Jackson confirms that the characters from his raunchy spluppet feature (splatter + puppet), Meet the Feebles, exist within the same world as the Muppets, making for one of horror’s most surprising crossovers.

The recent passing of Harry Belafonte — and the viral proliferation of a clip featuring the iconic singer/actor/activist crooning “Day-o” in front of a boat packed with dancing pigs — was a reminder of how many stars of a certain generation were at their most relaxed and ebullient as participants on The Muppet Show.
Some 44 years after Belafonte did The Muppet Show, the powers that be at Disney and the Muppet Studio continue to go out of their way to find avenues for Muppet programming that inexplicably avoid just doing The Muppet Show for a new generation. There’s a willingness to fritter this priceless brand away on tangential projects that vanish quickly and forgettably instead of bringing the characters and the A-list stars who love them together in one spoof-and-song-driven space.

It's genuinely surprising that the peculiar Transylvanian family residing at 1313 Mockingbird Lane was never updated for modern audiences until 2022. "The Munsters" TV show ran on CBS for only two seasons in the mid-1960s and then sat dormant for decades until Rob Zombie finally revived the series, transforming it into a Technicolor feature film that eventually landed on Netflix. The final product served as more of a prequel to the TV series that focused on the bizarre courtship between Herman (Jeff Daniel Phillips) and Lily (Sheri Moon Zombie) before settling down with Lily's grandfather The Count, their son Eddie and their niece Marilyn.
Regardless of whether you're a fan of the 2022 film or not, (/Film's review wasn't exactly kind), Zombie felt like the perfect choice to direct. "The Munsters" was a dream project for the musician and filmmaker who had long been obsessed with the original series and subsequent TV...

When Nicolas Cage was cast as Dracula in "Renfield," it felt like the universe was finally giving something back to genre fans. The planets had aligned, and one of the most unique actors of his generation was getting the chance to sink his teeth into one of the most iconic horror roles in cinema history. In his review of the film, /Film's Chris Evangelista says that Cage delivers but the movie "can't come close to matching the actor's wacko energy."
Director Chris McKay's action comedy horror hybrid puts the dark lord's faithful, bug-eating servant, Renfield (Nicholas Hoult), in the spotlight this time around to make a loose-fitting legacy sequel to Tod Browning's original 1931 masterpiece starring Bela Lugosi and Dwight Frye. The characters of Dracula and Renfield are embedded in our pop culture lexicon and they've both appeared in countless versions of Bram Stoker's classic tale over the last century.

Though they've primarily been supporting characters in the past – the house band in The Muppet Show and popping up in the movies for the odd appearance and musical number – Dr. Teeth And The Electric Mayhem are ready for their moment in the spotlight, thanks to a new Disney+ series called The Muppets Mayhem. Check out the full trailer…
This new series sees The Electric Mayhem on an epic musical journey to finally record their first studio album. With the help of driven young music executive Nora (Lily Singh), the old-school Muppet band comes face to face with the current day music scene as they try to finally go platinum.
The show is the brain spawn of Adam F. Goldberg, best known for creating US sitcom The Goldbergs based on his youth, Muppet veteran performer/writer Bill Barretta and actor/writer Jeff Yorkes.
Barretta will pull double duty, also playing Dr.

Today in news that will totally make you smile (I hope!), I'm thrilled to be the one to remind you there's a new Muppets series coming to Disney+ -- one that takes a deep dive into the rockin' world of The Electric Mayhem Band, aka that band of Muppets that is a regular fixture in most Jim Henson properties. Cute, right? Needless to say, I'm ready for "The Muppets Mayhem"— and the trailer is a major reason why.
In the show's sneak peek, we get reacquainted with the band and find out they've made a mark on some of the world's most famous musicians, including Tommy Lee, Chris Stapleton, and Lil Nas X. But the trailer drops a bomb on us: the legendary group has never actually made a record together. This show chronicles what exactly happens on Mayhem's quest to finally produce an album, many years after the height of their music career.

Damien Chazelle's "Babylon" is a fantastic, over-the-top tale of debauchery and a melancholic look at the roaring '20s in Hollywood, where everything could and often did happen. This is a film of excess, beginning with an opening scene so ridiculous you'd think Baz Luhrmann directed it — or at least stood up, hooting and hollering through the scene — and the only 2022 film that ends with a shoutout to James Cameron's "Avatar," a movie it seems to both admire and deeply fear.
This is not a reverential look at the power of filmmaking like "The Fablemans," or a tender story that crosses with a tale about the power of cinema like "Cinema Paradiso," but a go-for-broke, "Animaniacs" sketch about the endless cycle of death and rebirth in Hollywood. Scenes about the making of several pictures in the same lot are fascinating if kind of cartoonish. An incredibly long opening...

Many people rightly feel that the origins of Count Dracula — that mythic, blood-sucking vampire — have their roots in the mountains of Transylvania. However, if humans of the future were to unearth the graves of those buried at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California, they might believe differently. Because actor Bela Lugosi was laid to rest there donning one of the iconic capes he wore in his portrayals of the famous vampire on screen. To unearth him would be like unearthing The Count himself.
And maybe, in a way, that would be true. Even though Lugosi's body of work includes much more than just his performance as Dracula in the original 1931 Universal film of the same name (as well as a role reprisal in "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein"), when you mention him today, the first thing that comes to mind is that infamous bloodsucker. When Rob Zombie first announced his interest in adapting classic sitcom The Munsters, star Jeff Daniel Phillips told me, fans of the series were nervous. They expected what most of us do from a Zombie film – a gorefest with a cynical take on life and lots of gratuitous violence, starring the director’s wife. This is a very different piece of work from the cult director, however, and only the latter of those things applies. It’s surprisingly close to the spirit of the original, but with an added layer of meta-humour which, though often playing with irony, somehow also manages to be full of heart.
Sheri Moon Zombie plays Lily (of course), whilst Phillips is Herman, freshly made from not-so-fresh parts and just starting out in the world. As the film opens, with Lily’s father The Count rising from his coffin and putting his back out, Lily is on a date.

We all remember the time in our childhood when our parents/guardians sat us down and explained to us one of the hard truths of life: voice actors don't live forever. And we cried, and started pleading with them, asking "what about Bugs Bunny? He's had a consistent voice for over a hundred years!" To which they replied, "no he hasn't." And with tears in our eyes, we ran to our rooms, saving our caretakers from having to confront their own mortality.
When the voice actor of an iconic character passes away, the question of how to proceed with that character inevitably arises. For some, like Edna Krabappel of "The Simpsons," the character was respectfully retired after voice actor Marcia Wallace died. But for other characters, especially ones that have existed for decades and decades, a replacement must be found. This was the case with Minnie Mouse, whose longtime voice actor,...

After enormous success and Oscars for films ranging from Whiplash to La La Land to First Man, writer-director Damien Chazelle returned to an early dream project first envisioned 15 years ago — a no-holds-barred look at early Hollywood, a time when not only movies were transitioning from silent to sound but Los Angeles itself was booming from desert to bulging metropolis. People were caught up in a turbulent time of change, and it didn’t always work out for some. As witnessed in the resulting film and years of meticulous research, Babylon is a sight to behold, a decadent, freewheeling, at times even poignant look at a series of dreamers, stars, fringe players and all who wanted a piece of a world that felt out of control, uninhibited and full of promise — and downfall.
