Welcome to the latest instalment of a brand-new feature here on Nerdly, where one of our comic gurus, Ian Wells, delves into comics history and dissects Comics Interview, the long-running journal of interviews and criticism from David Anthony Kraft.
A Yak With Dak
David presents us with more of the same in his Upfront editorial. Every issue reads the same, a rundown of what is in store. All information we can get from the cover. From the information we get on the cover, you would be forgiven for thinking this interview isn’t going to offer much. The two biggest interviews revolve around Dak’s friends in the industry. But as you unpack the contents page there is actually a lot to sink your teeth into. I would prefer if Dak used this space to give more real inside information on the industry. With the many hats he has worn in the industry,...

Grimjack is being developed at Amazon by Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo’s Agbo Studios and being written by Kevin Murphy, the creator of Defiance, Heathers the Musical and Reefer Madness. Grimjack, created by John Ostrander and Tim Truman, is the adventures of John Gaunt, hard-boiled barbarian who walks the mean streets of the interdimensional city Cynosure, where magic works on one side of the street but not the other, technology becomes sentient down the block, and swords and a bad attitude work everywhere.
If you want to read up on GrimJack before everyone else, here’s your chance— ComicMix is publishing the original runs in Omnibus format. Dive in now!

“Avengers: Endgame” directors Joe and Anthony Russo will produce an adaptation of the indie comic “GrimJack” and develop a live-action version of the classic cartoon “Battle of the Planets,” the duo announced at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday.
Both projects will be developed through their Agbo banner. They will not direct “GrimJack” however, they might direct the “Battle of the Planets” movie. No screenwriter is currently attached to write “Battle of the Planets,” with Joe Russo adding the project is “very early days.” Both projects join their previously announced titles “Cherry,” which stars “Spider-Man” headliner Tom Holland, and a reboot of “The Thomas Crown Affair” with Michael B. Jordan.
Both “GrimJack” and “Battle of the Planets” are passion projects for both the brothers from when they were younger. “I would race home from school just to watch this at 4p.m.,” added Anthony Russo who stood up and showed off...

Today at Comic-Con, Joe and Anthony Russo announced projects that their AGBO Studios are in development on: an adaptation of the 1978 Japanese anime series Battle of the Planets and an Amazon series based on the graphic novel Grimjack Comics.
Battle of the Planets was originally created by Tatsuo Yoshida and Tatsunoko Studios and was arguably the first mainstream glimpse for U.S. audiences into Japanese anime during the late 1970s. In addition, it was one of the few sci-fi cartoons during that era. The series follows five young orphans who are trained from a young age to form an elite, intergalactic team known as G-Force, swearing to protect Earth and its allies from otherworldly invading forces.

The Authority creators reunite for a 12-issue Batman series.
Bryan Hitch and Warren Ellis are the comic book titans who created The Authority and unleashed them on the world, changing comics for twenty years. Now, the pair are reuniting for the first time since that superhero epic this October for The Batman's Grave, a 12-issue maxi-series written by Ellis, with art from Hitch and his Hawkman inker, Kevin Nowlan.
“I’ve drawn some covers and used Batman in Justice League and Jla, but since I read Jim Aparo and Don Newton’s Batman runs in the 80’s, I’ve wanted to do a proper, big Batman story. Fellow Authoritarian Warren Ellis had one to tell, so when he mentioned it I said ‘yes’ before even asking what it was about," said Hitch in a press release. "That’s what you do when Warren says ‘I’ve got a proper,...

I can’t agree with fans that hate big crowds at big comic conventions. I tend to like big crowds. And I am always astonished by the way the San Diego Comic-Con takes over that town. I’m also in awe that the New York Comic Con is the biggest convention held in New York City’s Javits Center. The massive attendees at every big comic-con are both testaments to Geek Culture, and virtual victory laps for all fans everywhere.
To be honest, I also enjoy smaller comic conventions. There’s something special about being able to just wander up to a favorite creator and engage in a conversation with him or her. And at smaller shows, it’s empowering to be able to casually flip through a long box of comics to search for treasures, without elbowing your way through a crushing wall of other fans searching for their own treasures.

Allen, Son of Hellcock #1
Written by Will Tracy and Gabe Koplowitz
Art by Miguel Porto
Published by Z2 Comics
What happens when the bad guy conquers the kingdom, but he ends being a decent ruler, everyone is happy, and there are no rebellions in sight. Allen, Son of Hellcock #1 by writers Will Tracy (Last Week Tonight with John Oliver) and Gabe Koplowitz and artist Miguel Porto is what happens. The comic opens up as kind of mash-up of the recent Tim Truman Conan comics and the classic Sergio Aragones Groo the Wanderer fantasy parody series with a relatively straightforward sword and sorcery narrative about the barbarian warrior Hellcock and his quirky supporting cast. But this is just another one of those Fellowship of the Ring prologues, and the comic is actually about Allen, whose name people can’t get right for some reason, and his attempts to live a relatively...

Last week, I wrote about plot and character and I applied Newton’s First Law of Physics – a body at rest will remain at rest unless an outside force acts on it, and a body in motion at a constant velocity will remain in motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an outside force – to both. I want to delve this week a little more into character.
The basics. Every character you write is you, some aspect of you. If it isn’t, the character is stillborn. There’s no life in it. We all have many different aspects to ourselves. Different people bring out those different aspects. Good, bad, indifferent – every character is you. I once described Story as an author talking to him/herself. It helps, therefore, if you are aware of those different aspects you possess.
So the first step in creating a character is finding yourself in that character.

It’s always interesting to see your children grow up. In my case I don’t have any flesh and blood children; I have the offspring of my imagination, of my heart and mind – the characters I’ve created in my stories, especially in my comics. By growing up, I mean seeing them in other media. And occasionally their sending money home.
In that regard, the most grown up of my offspring is, without a doubt, Amanda Waller, a.k.a. the Wall. She first appeared in the DC miniseries Legends but was created for my version of the Suicide Squad. For those of you who don’t know, the Suicide Squad was a covert team that Waller put together using jailed supervillains. They were sent on secret missions pursuing American governmental objectives and, if they succeeded and survived, they were set free or had their time significantly reduced. If they died – no loss.

Admittedly, I went into Army Wives Season 7 with very low expectations.
There was a serious debate playing in my head as to whether or not I would even give the seventh season a shot. What a pleasant surprise. By the end of the season we were left with only three original characters to lean on, and yet it felt more like the Army Wives I fell in love with than it had in years.
The Least Surprising Moment: The death of Claudia Joy came as a surprise to no one, but it was heartbreaking nonetheless. After the complete gutting of the cast during Army Wives Season 6, the realization that Kim Delaney couldn't get her personal issues together to keep Claudia Joy alive hit viewers hard. In return, they got a mini reunion of Roxy, Pamela, Roland and Denise as they all shared time grieving with Michael over the loss of their friend.

On Army Wives this week, the recently returned soldiers were getting reacquainted with home life, while Denise hit San Mateo with Dr. Seaver to help earthquake victims on "Damaged."
Nobody really got out of the episode unscathed in some way.
It was nice insight into Eddie's character to learn about what Ethan Green, who didn't make it back from Afghanistan, thought about him and how he looked up to him like a brother and a mentor.
Hector also got to show his growth as he shook the life into Tim after he finally broke during the memorial for Ethan Green. Holly never understood exactly what Tim was going through, but when he cracked and cried, it was pretty apparent that sending 18-year old boys to fight our wars is questionable. They simply aren't prepared for the Ethan Green outcomes.

On "Reckoning," Army Wives fans were treated to pretty significant field scenes - and I think they will bring changes to the characters that will take a long time to settle. The ladies will look back on their party at Denise's and wish for the simple times once again.
The soldiers never seem as excited to leave for home as the spouses are to receive them. Except the last soldiers who are left behind. They are the ones who are most looking forward to getting home and are instead sitting back watching the youngsters wish they were staying on the battlefield.
It was pretty obvious as soon as Bravo was ordered home that tragedy was going to strike again. The potential for drama is too good and they've been spending too much time in Afghanistan for them to just go over, become combat buddies and come home. It was about to hit the fan.

There’s a saying that goes “The devil is in the detailsl, but so is character, whether writing, drawing, or acting. I had the opportunity of teaching at the Joe Kubert School a few times (and the inestimable pleasure of getting to know not only the legendary Joe Kubert but so many others working at the school) and I had the maybe unenviable task of teaching writing to a bunch of art students. Some didn’t take to that right away; after all, they were there to learn how to draw. From talking to some of the graduates over the years, however, I think most found it worthwhile and I enjoyed it. For me, everything in comics is about character and storytelling. Design to me means nothing unless it is tied to those two points. I’m not interested in a mask or costume whose design is simply “cool” or...

"Hearth and Home" was another Army Wives episode where we split the time between Fort Marshall and Afghanistan.
While Hector and Tim would have given anything to be at home with their loved ones, Joan was angry to be back with her family. Could she chalk it up to a recurrence of her brain injury or is she just human? Let's find out.
I always assumed that when Joan gave Roland the okay to go to Johns Hopkins, she was thinking long-term, and would one day be ready leave the Army. She hasn't been happy in her position in a while, and being sent home wasn't her dream career move either, but the way she behaved when she learned Roland was still on board with his assignment surprised me. When it comes to commitments, Joan shouldn't have a problem understanding them.

Hector Cruz had a tumultuous Army Wives Season 6. It included a child on the way, a divorce and eventually getting deployed in the season finale, "Onward."
Except Joseph Julian Soria reassured me that things are looking up for the Private First Class.

Jesse McCartney may have gotten his start in music, but the now 25-year-old has thrived on television -- from his award-winning performance on All My Children to roles in Summerland and Greek, McCartney has proven he's got chops to make it on the small screen.
But a new role is testing every fiber of McCartney's being in order to believably bring to life Army Wives' newest recruit, Private Tim Truman. ETonline caught up with the actor to find out how he prepared -- both physically and mentally -- to play a soldier and what fans can expect from this revamped season.
ETonline: How did you prepare, mentally, to play a soldier?
Jesse McCartney: With any character, the main objective is to bring authenticity to the role. But this is a little more sensitive because our troops are still over there so when you're talking about war, people are going to be a little more hyper-critical...

Ever wondered how actor and singer Jesse McCartney might look in uniform? Fans of the Lifetime series Army Wives will find out when season seven kicks off this year. McCartney will act as Private Tim Truman.
Season seven of Army Wives is already taking shape. As I recently reported, actor Burgess Jenkins will play Maggie’s husband, Staff Sgt. Eddie Hall and Tony Award nominee, Joshua Henry, has been cast as Quincy, Latasha’s husband. Maggie is Torrey DeVitto and Ashanti is Latasha, by the way. There’s lot’s of new characters and all new drama in store.
Now, THR reports that Jesse McCartney has also been cast. His is a recurring role. The actor who has enjoyed stints on Greek, Summerland and All My Children, will play a very motivated, “enthusiastic” young soldier. This should be good to watch because McCartney has been nominated for two Daytime Emmy Awards and a Grammy.

Allison Williams has a new love interest, and he doesn't live in Brooklyn.
The actress, who's known for playing Marnie on HBO's "Girls," has been cast in "The Mindy Project" for a multi-episode arc. According to TVLine, Williams will play Danny Castellano's (Chris Messina) love interest Jillian.
Danny meets Jillian, known as "eyepatch girl" thanks to her optical accessory, in a waiting room after rushing Gwen (Anna Camp) to the hospital.
Their meeting naturally brings on a slew of bad pirate jokes, and the sparks immediately fly. Could Danny finally have found the one?!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… or so the song goes. Except when it’s not.
I have my Christmas favorites on DVD or TV that I watch every year. They include A Christmas Carol (the Reginald Owen version and the much better Alastair Sim version as well as, oddly, Mister Magoo’s Christmas Carol which adds songs and does a pretty fair job of summing up the story in less than a half hour), It’s A Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, and the cartoons – How The Grinch Stole Christmas (Karloff beats Carey hands down) and, of course, A Charlie Brown Christmas.
And, a day or so after Christmas, I add in Bad Santa just to wash all the treacle away. Your choices may differ and that’s fine – these are mine.
My best Christmas was probably the one when I proposed to my late wife,...

The right music can make all the difference in a TV show. It can elevate a scene, imbue it with nuance and meaning, or destroy it, either under- or over-playing the emotion and rendering it lifeless or trite. Many have opinions on the best or most memorable TV theme songs, but far fewer have anything to say about original scores. This is a somewhat skewed list, with recent series far better represented than classics, but the shows discussed below are all very strongly tied to their scores. They function as characters in the stories, bringing the audience to a particular time or place and immersing them in that world. See how many of the series you can identify by sound alone, then scroll down, where each selection is explained and accompanied with a video clip.
Honorable Mentions: Animaniacs, Batman: the Animated Series, Scrubs, Victory at Sea

Tim Truman has discussed the conclusion of his Conan The Cimmerian title. The ongoing series entered its final arc last month and will conclude with issue #25 in October. "The original Conan ongoing series dealt with Conan's younger adventures," Truman told Newsarama. "Conan The Cimmerian centred around the next phase of his life as a mercenary. This last arc pretty much wraps up that era of his life and sets him on his way to his years as a pirate. "[The closing arc is] an adaptation of the great Robert E. Howard story, (more)...

So Dan "Big Daddy" Didio and company have once again dropped a cryptic poster on our geeky arses... to pick apart, faun over, and otherwise wax poetic about. So, Comicmixers, I present to you:
Here's this author's take on what we're seeing here:
In the foreground Deadman is carving "Rise" into a tombstone. This is indicative of his desire for Tombstone Pizza to finally deliver a self rising crust pizza in the Dcu.Behind him the new Blacqualad is using his water powers to make a sword, which in turn has destroyed Blue Devil's Black Manta's Bi-Dent. Speculation here dictates that Blacqualad is actually the son of Black Manta, and he's punishing daddy for missing all those birthdays.Behind him, we see the Martian Manhunter finally getting over his fear of fire. No one told him that "Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires" though... so, he's practicing by igniting that...

Tim Truman and Tomas Giorello will offer more of Robert E. Howard's hero in King Conan: The Scarlet Citadel. Truman and Giorello's ongoing Dark Horse series Conan the Cimmerian is coming to an end, but will be followed by the four-issue miniseries, it was announced at C2E2 in Chicago. "With Scarlet Citadel, Tomas and I will bring a whole new level of craftsmanship and concentration to the title," Truman told Cbr. "I can't wait to see what Tomas cooks up - he'll be able to lavish even more detail on to each page. I think Scarlet Citadel (more)...

Kyle Baker has announced a return to super-heroics by taking on yet another revamp of Hawkman.
“I'm working on a new Hawkman comic for DC, and decided to try a newer, more fan-friendly style,” Baker wrote on his website.
“No title for the book yet that I know of. It's not due for another six months. By the way, just for the fans, I'm making this story the bloodiest and most depressing story ever! Full of realism! Hawkman's World will be CHanged Forever! I've revealed too much. I can say no more.”
Hawkman’s continuity has been in flux since Tim Truman wrote and drew Hawkworld in 1989. Geoff Johns tried to meld all the versions together during his ‘The Return of Hawkman” arc in Jsa which seemed to settle the matter once and for all. This fall’s Hawkman Special once more opened Pandora’s Box and Baker is at work on the newest variation.
