Records don’t last long: There was a bittersweet feeling after UK producer trade body Pact’s Census 2022 press briefing on Tuesday. Spotlighting full-year 2022, the briefing showed how the UK TV production sector hit record highs of nearly £4B ($5B) last year, driven by the streamers, who upped spend by a whopping 133% to £700M. Big hits to land included Heartstopper and The Crown Season 5. Multiple records were broken in a year in which the UK TV industry was virtually at full employment, but, during the briefing, most questions to Pact CEO John McVay focused on the here and now, as things feel very different today for many producers. McVay was honest in his assessment of 2023 and years to come,...

Sandi Toksvig, the President of the Writers Guild of Great Britain (Wggb), has urged streamers to end their practice of “buy-out agreements” and embrace residuals, aligning with the WGA’s demands.
The former Bake Off presenter is speaking in the next hour at the Trades Union Congress in Liverpool, where the Wggb will lay down a motion on “Streaming and fair pay for writers.”
“The increased use of non-collectively bargained buy-out agreements risks writing becoming a profession for only those who can afford it,” the motion says. “As a result, the writing profession, and stories that are told will become less diverse.”
In common with the WGA, the Wggb’s motion will criticize the streamers Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Apple TV+ for engaging writers in “buy-out agreements” requiring them to sign away IP and copyright, which means “they do not receive any additional remuneration, even if their shows become international hits,...

The president of the Writers Guild of Great Britain (Wggb), Sandi Toksvig, is set to call for changes to the way in which streamers remunerate writers.
Toksvig will speak at the Trades Union Congress (Tuc) in Liverpool, U.K. on Wednesday, where the Wggb will propose a motion that the Congress support its efforts to bargain for a return to residuals and an end to buy-outs.
Toksvig will say companies such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney, Apple and podcast streamers such as Audible regularly require writers to sign buy-outs preventing any future residuals or remuneration and also prevents them from adapting their work in different mediums, whether as books, theatrical shows or audio content.
If the motion is passed, it could result in the issue getting attention from Britain’s politicians.

Russell T. Davies addressed the U.S. writers strike for the first time at the London Screenwriters Everywhere protest this afternoon.
Speaking with Deadline on the ground, the Doctor Who showrunner said he believes the issues around the strike haven’t been created by producers or executive producers but by the ignorance of executives at the higher boardroom level “who I’m not even sure are listening.”
“That’s the problem. We need to get rid of them,” Davies said.
When asked what he thinks needs to change to end the strike, Davies said terms between writers and the studios “just need to be humane.”
Davies added that he turned up today to show solidarity with the WGA and predicted that the issues writers face in the U.S. will eventually plague the UK industry.
“I know that what happens in America happens here. These problems will be coming this way.

Sandi Toksvig has spoken out against the Church of England’s stance on same-sex marriage, saying that it is “causing severe mental health problems for the LGBTQ+ community”.
On Wednesday (8 February), the Church’s national assembly will vote on a proposal that clergy will be given the option to adopt blessing prayers for couples in same-sex marriages.
The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said that, while he “joyfully” welcomed the blessings proposals, he would not personally carry them out.
Speaking to BBC News, Qi host Toksvig said that she had met with Welby last month to discuss the topic, but found the conversation “very disappointing”.
“So what we have is two very polarised sides of this argument. The problem is, there’s only one side that is impinging on the lives of others,” she said.
“And I’m afraid the very conservative people, who interpret the Bible with less love than I would hope,...

Prue Leith has confessed that she’d never heard of her The Great British Bake Off co-star Noel Fielding until he appeared on the show.
The popular judge on the Channel 4 baking series appeared on Lorraine today (Tuesday 20 December), where she shared some anecdotes about her early days as a cook, as well as her thoughts on Matt Lucas’ recent exit from Bake Off.
The comedian shocked fans earlier this month by announcing he was quitting the show after three series. He explained that it had become too much of a struggle juggling his various TV commitments.
“Farewell Bake Off!” he wrote in a statement. “It’s been a delicious experience and I can’t imagine a more fun way of spending my summers. But it’s become clear to me that I can’t present both Fantasy Football League and Bake Off alongside all my other projects.

Matt Lucas has responded to Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith’s tributes after quitting The Great British Bake Off.
On Tuesday (6 December), the Little Britain actor announced he was stepping away from the baking competition, which is known as The Great British Baking Show in the US.
He attributed his decision to a clash of projects, stating that it “became clear” he could no longer present the show.
It is currently unknown who will replace Lucas, who himself replaced Sandi Toksvig during the show’s 11th series in 2019, but many are hoping it could lead to a fun reunion.
After the news broke, baking experts Hollywood and Leith shared respective messages, praising Lucas for his stint on the show.
“I have absolutely loved working with you @RealMattLucas. Thank you for bringing so much laughter and fun to the tent,” Leith wrote, while Hollywood said: “You will be missed @RealMattLucas , good...

Joe Lycett has ruled himself out of replacing Matt Lucas on the next series of The Great British Bake Off.
The comedian had been a popular choice among viewers of the hit Channel 4 baking series, after Lucas announced his departure earlier this week.
Some bookmakers even listed Lycett as the favourite to take up the vacant role alongside Noel Fielding.
During an interview with The News Agents podcast, however, Lycett shut down speculation that a Bake Off role could be on the cards.
“No, thank you,” he said. “I’m taking myself out the race.”
On the same podcast, Lycett addressed his sarcastic appearance on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg back in September.
According to Lycett, his mocking manner during the interview, which saw him claim to be “extremely right wing” and effusively praise Liz Truss, stemmed from his very real anger over the government’s “consistent lying” over the Partygate scandal.

Matt Lucas’ time in the tent is over.
The Little Britain star announced Tuesday (6 December) that he was stepping down as one half of the hosting team on Channel 4’s The Great British Bake Off.
While fans have expressed their sadness at the comedian’s decision to move on, it does mean the door is open for another presenter to take on one of the most coveted jobs in television.
Whoever is chosen will join The Mighty Boosh star Noel Fielding – who has hosted the show since it moved to Channel 4 in 2017 – succeeding his past co-presenters Sandi Toksvig and Lucas.
Below, we’ve rounded up some of the most likely replacements for Lucas as well as some who we just think have what it takes to make the tent hum with amusement.

Finding out that the Qi elves got something wrong is as oddly satisfying as watching a waiter drop a tray of glasses. It doesn’t happen that often, but when it does, it’s a sight to behold.
Series T of Qi is currently airing, with Sandi Toksvig once again steering the ship of Quite Interesting facts and Alan Davies still on board as regular panellist.
Before we add too many of their fun facts to our bank of things to impress with at parties (or more likely make us look like insufferable know-it-alls), let’s remind ourselves of the times Qi got it wrong.
Flobbadob
Who knew harmless 1950s puppets Bill and Ben would end up the source of Qi controversy? In series B, Stephen Fry claimed the language these flowerpot men puppets spoke was called ‘Flobbadob’, named after the sound of the farts made by the creator’s brothers in their childhood baths.

“It’s the best possible antidote to cynicism about young people, allowing millions of us to test our wits against the best minds of a new generation, and annoy and impress our families by barking answers from the sofa.”

Like the Doctor in the Tardis, the new presenter of University Challenge will know they have a hard act to follow, as Jeremy Paxman’s withering looks and razor-sharp question-mastery have become part of the show’s very identity. And, much like the new Doctor, when the BBC announced it would name University Challenge’s next host later this week, it prompted fierce speculation on social media.
So who could it be? While former Question Time and Newsnight presenters make some obvious choices, the new host will need to be someone with enough time in their schedule, and popular picks like Clive Myrie and Jeremy Vine are already busy with quiz shows Mastermind and Eggheads, respectively.
But that still leaves us with plenty of predictions. Fingers on buzzers! Here’s our starter for ten…

Former Channel 4 deputy director of programs and head of popular factual Kelly Webb-Lamb has set up a new production company.
Mothership Productions will focus on global formats and “ideas of scale” across the unscripted genres. The new outfit has already hit the ground running with a senior team that includes Charlotte Desai, Gilly Greenslade and Gudren Claire.
“After 25 years in the industry on both sides of the pitching/buying table, it felt like it was time to take the leap and have a go at doing it for myself,” said Webb-Lamb. “I can’t honestly believe I’ve managed to persuade such a brilliant group of women to come along for the ride with me. We are super ambitious — and intend to make some properly great, entertaining, warm and witty programmes — and have a lot of fun.”
Webb-Lamb is one of the U.K. TV industry’s most well-respected executives.

His Dark Materials and Help writer Jack Thorne has been recognized for Outstanding Contribution to Writing at tonight’s 29th Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Awards (WGGBAs), with Russell T Davies, Emerald Fennell and Armando Iannucci also taking home gongs.
The prolific Thorne, who delivered this year’s Edinburgh Television Festival MacTaggart lecture, was presented with the prestigious trophy by His Dark Materials exec and Bad Wolf Co-Founder Jane Tranter, following a two-decades-long career in which he has penned some of the UK’s most critically-acclaimed hits including This is England, Shameless and The Virtues.
“I think all writers would say that being given something from other writers is the greatest honor,” said Thorne. “I don’t think I’ve really contributed anything much in this strange career, and writing is a really strange job, but I’m grateful, and slightly anxious, to now have this award to live up to.
