Yul Vázquez is teaming up with Forest Whitaker in the upcoming third season of Godfather of Harlem as a new series regular.
Godfather of Harlem tells a story inspired by infamous crime boss Bumpy Johnson (Whitaker), who in the early 1960s returned from eleven years in prison to find the neighborhood he once ruled in shambles. Season Three will find Bumpy Johnson continuing to battle for control of Harlem, with other aspirants to the throne, namely the Cuban Mafia from neighboring Spanish Harlem. Taking on the Cuban mob will put Bumpy, his loved ones, and his community in the crosshairs of not only the rival Italians, but ruthless Latin assassins and, ultimately, the CIA. Godfather of Harlem is a collision of the criminal underworld and the civil rights movement during one of the most tumultuous times in American history.

“I realized there could be a gangster show that was the collision of organized crime and civil rights, and that turns out to be a Rubik’s Cube that’s incredibly difficult to solve,” declares Chris Brancato, co-creator and showrunner of “Godfather of Harlem,” which is set to premiere its anticipated third season on newly-named MGM+ (currently Epix). For our recent webchat he adds, “it was immediately apparent to us that by using the prism of the past, we could talk about things of contemporary relevance,” he explains. “What we also can see from the show is, on the one hand, things have changed greatly for African Americans. We’ve had an African American president. But on the other hand, things haven’t changed much at all, and so that’s what the show’s trying to articulate.” We talked with Brancato as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet...

Bumpy Johnson is back, and he’s ready to reclaim his territory in the Season 3 of “Godfather of Harlem.” In an exclusive clip and two exclusive photos, Johnson weighs his options as he sets his sights on new opportunities. Season 3 is set to premiere Jan. 15, 2023, on MGM+.
“If I go south of 110th St., I gotta smile, bow and and scrape. If I assert myself to a white man in a way that he doesn’t like, I get billy clubbed and I get put in jail. But, up here, it’s different. I get respect. I call the shots. Me, and me alone,” says Johnson, who is played by Academy Award-winning actor Forest Whitaker, in an exclusive clip.
In each shot of the teaser, viewers get a glance of Johnson’s next business deals and business partners, and the harsh realities and the Black community faced during the civil rights movement in the 1960s.

Crime is part of the American experience, says Paul Eckstein, creator of Godfather of Harlem.
Martin Scorsese's The Irishman appears to be a swan song for an era of the gangster film. But Epix's Godfather of Harlem, which just closed out its premiere season, is keeping the genre fresh.
The series bridges generations of actors to tell the story of a mob kingpin who bridged the criminal worlds. Bumpy Johnson, played by Oscar-winning actor and director Forest Whitaker, ran Harlem under Mafia protection in a deal brokered by "Lucky" Luciano which lasted forty years. By the time he was 30, Johnson had spent almost half his life in prison. He went back in for a 15-year stretch in 1951 for conspiring to sell heroin. The series paints him as a standup guy, who did time rather than implicate his Mafia partners.

Bumpy Johnson sets his enemies against each other in this exclusive clip from Godfather of Harlem.
There's a battle brewing uptown on Epix's crime drama Godfather of Harlem, and all the players are looking for a home field advantage. Italian mob boss Joe Bonanno (Chazz Palminteri) may not want a war with Genovese capo Vincent “The Chin” Gigante, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, but Bumpy Johnson (Forest Whitaker) is declaring his independence. An exclusive clip from episode 7
Johnson got out of prison to come home to a new Harlem. The deals he made with Lucky Luciano are losing value and the street price of dooji, or heroin, is on the rise. His old friend Malcolm X (Nigel Thatch) sees it as a blight on the community where the gangsters just see a commodity. It's business but it's about to get very personal.

An essential part of Epix’s fall slate is the dramatic “Godfather of Harlem,” starring Forest Whitaker (who also executive produces) as the real-life Bumpy Johnson. Taking place in the mid-1960s after Johnson got out of prison, the show mixes the familial challenges Johnson faced when returning home with the political issues of the time. It follows his rise to power as a drug kingpin in Harlem, and shines light on his pivotal relationships with Malcolm X (Nigel Thatch) and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. (Giancarlo Esposito).
“This is the education of Bumpy Johnson,” says co-creator Chris Brancato. “What interested us most was the idea that what we would do through the show was explore the collision of crime and civil rights in early-’60s Harlem with an eye towards contemporary themes like police brutality, drug addiction, gang warfare, the situation in the ghetto.”

Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein’s new Epix series Godfather of Harlem tells the story of crime boss Bumpy Johnson (Forest Whitaker), a figure in the early 1960s who returned from a ten-year jail stint to find his neighborhood overrun by the Italian mob.
One of the more intriguing true-life historical points played out in the series is his relationship with Malcolm X, as the two join forces to manage the social upheaval and mob war that looms. In the trailer, Malcolm X says to Johnson, “You have guns, but I have an army.”
“Bumpy has his hustle going, and Malcolm has his,” Brancato told Deadline following the TCA afternoon session.
Brancato shared with the TCA press corps that as part of the creators’ research about the duo’s unique relationship, they not only combed through books about Malcolm X and Johnson, but interviews were conducted with “surviving heirs” of the two.

Epix is landing some great shows of late.
Coming this fall will be Godfather of Harlem, starring Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker in the lead role. He's joined by Vincent D’Onofrio, Giancarlo Esposito, Paul Sorvino, Nigel Thatch, and Ilfenesh Hadera.
Whitaker won an Academy Award for his performance as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in the movie The Last King of Scotland.
Whitaker should have no problem stepping into the shows of the infamous crime boss Bumpy Johnson, who in the early 1960s returned from ten years in prison to find the neighborhood he once ruled in shambles.
With the streets controlled by the Italian mob, Bumpy must take on the Genovese crime family to regain control.
During the brutal battle, he forms an alliance with radical preacher Malcolm X (Thatch) – catching Malcolm’s political rise in the crosshairs of social upheaval and a mob war that threatens to tear the city apart.

Epix is digging into the shady side of history books for its upcoming drama “Godfather of Harlem” starring Forest Whitaker. In the series, he plays American mob boss and bookmaker Bumpy Johnson (born Ellsworth Raymond Johnson) in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood during the 1960s. His life has inspired many TV and movie adaptations, most recently on the big screen in “American Gangster.”
In the teaser trailer below, Bumpy wants his old neighborhood back after time spent in prison. As Swizz Beatz & Dmx’s “They Don’t Love Me” plays, he uses strong-arm tactics to get what he wants. He also forges a partnership with Malcolm X (Nigel Thatch), whose famous speech about using “any means necessary” can also be heard.
Here’s Epix’s official description:

The CW has made it official, opting not to bring back freshman military drama Valor for a second season.
Valor, starring Matt Barr and Christina Ochoa, underperformed in ratings and failed to receive a back-nine order. The show’s stars already signed on to new gigs as series regulars in pilots — the CW’s Skinny Dip and ABC’s ensemble drama pilot A Million Little Things, which is certain to go to series, respectively.
In Valor, the boundaries between military discipline and human desire were tested on a U.S. Army base that houses an elite unit of helicopter pilots trained to perform clandestine international and domestic missions. The drama unfolded in the present as well as in flashbacks to a failed mission involving one of the first female pilots in the unit, ultimately uncovering layers of personal and government/military secrets and leading to a season-long plan to rescue a group of Mia soldiers.

“Valor” has been canceled by the CW after one season.
The military drama that followed an elite unit of U.S. Army helicopter pilots starred Matt Barr, Christina Ochoa, Charlie Barnett, Corbin Reid, W. Tre Davis, Nigel Thatch and Melissa Roxburgh. The series came from executive producers Bill Haber, Anna Fricke and Kyle Jarrow, and was a co-production from CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television.
“Valor” debuted on the CW’s fall 2018 schedule but failed to receive the back-nine pickup. Its season concluded in late January 2018 with an average of 958,000 total viewers and a rating of 0.21 in the 18-49 demo. “Valor” actually beat the CW’s freshman series “Dynasty” in the ratings. However, “Dynasty” was among the 10 series the network renewed back in April.

Although there has still been no official announcement, each day it seems more likely that the Valor TV show has been cancelled by The CW. Last week, star Christina Ochoa joined the cast of an ABC pilot, A Million Little Things. Now her male counterpart, Matt Barr, has followed suit. The veteran of the cancelled horror series, Harper's Island, is joining a new pilot on The CW: Skinny Dip. We say this without judgement: from the description, Skinny Dip sounds much more up The CW's alley than Valor ever did.A CW military drama, Valor stars Ochoa, Barr, Charlie Barnett, Corbin Reid, W. 'Selma' movie review: Politically salient in the early 21st century and 'beautiful in all the ways of cinema' (photo: David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King Jr. in 'Selma') The title of director Ava DuVernay's historical drama Selma tells us what the film is about, while implying what it isn't about. In other words, Selma is not about the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. -- wonderfully played by British actor David Oyelowo -- even though the reverend is the film's gravitational center and its emotional weight accrues to him. Just like what took place in Selma, Alabama, back in 1965. In fact, Oyelowo's presence is as transfixing as that of the young Ben Kingsley in his transformative interpretation of Gandhi in Sir Richard Attenborough's 1982 titular classic about one of Dr. King's inspirational figures. Unlike Gandhi, however, Selma is a single canvas on which a few months in Dr.
