Fantasy is a genre that is often hard done by the awards groups, particularly the academy. Occasionally, the odd masterpiece such as Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, which won 17 Oscars, will break their barrier but, in general, the genre doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Even “Harry Potter” failed to earn an Oscar win and was never nominated in any above-the-line category.
However, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” is poised to be the next fantastical film that makes the academy’s voters sit up and take notice. Part romance, part ghost story, the film is loosely based on Taichi Yamada‘s 1987 novel “Strangers.” The story follows Andrew Scott‘s Adam as a writer struggling with his latest project who forms a relationship with Paul Mescal‘s Harry. As their relationship progresses, Adam finds himself drawn to his past and visits his hometown only...

Chicago – It’s not uncommon to see truly talented people sucked into awful family fare. I think some actors, perhaps after doing a few too many “dark” roles in films aimed at adults, jump at the opportunity to do something light-hearted, fun, and for the little ones. How else to explain people as talented as Emily Blunt and Jason Segel getting sucked into the disappointing comedy “Gulliver’s Travels,” another piece of evidence in the mounting case against Jack Black?
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0
Remember when Jack Black was the next comedy savior? He took small parts in the right movies (“Anchorman”), popped up in all the right places on TV, rocked out with Tenacious D, and delivered his best work with the spectacular “School of Rock.” A few miscast performances (“King Kong,” “The Holiday”) were forgivable but he was the main reason that “Nacho Libre” and “Year One” were nearly unbearable.

If you’ve been possessed of a burning desire to behold Jack Black’s belly flab in 3D, then I am delighted to announce that your moment has arrived. What’s that? You say it’s Black’s buttcrack you crave the sight of, rendered in three glorious dimensions? This, my friend, is your lucky day. Oh, but the daring of this updating of Jonathan Swift’s classic tale of rollicking adventure and biting cultural satire must be acknowledged! Black’s (Year One, Tropic Thunder) Lemuel Gulliver is a character unlike any we’ve ever seen on film before (and unlike any that Swift himself would have had the nerve to imagine): he’s a 40something layabout who happily toils, unambitiously and minimally, in the mailroom of the (fictional) New York Tribune and plays Guitar Hero more than he delivers the interoffice memos. He dreams of romancing travel editor...

It’s tempting to copy and paste a review from a film critic I admire, after all in this modern day adaptation of Jonathan Swift’s Guilliver’s Travels, it’s an act of plagiarism that is the catalyst for Gulliver’s troubles. He finds himself on assignment in Lilliput, a land of 6-inch humans speaking in British accents. For this to be a true modern day adaptation, with the satirical objectives of Jonathan Swift’s original, Gulliver would have to find himself transported to a modern day mini-Middle East. So dangerous a mix, a producer with that pair of balls (and perhaps stupidity) might as well hire Mel Gibson to play Gulliver, but this isn’t atomic Swiftian satire so much as a fun family-friendly 3D comedy.

Well, as most of you probably noticed, there was no Cinema Showdown last week. An error in the posting system, and my general lack of energy to write the whole thing all over again, was the cause of it. However, I think writing one of these on Christmas Eve more than makes up for it, don’t you?
You also may notice that this week’s Showdown is organized different than usual. Hopefully, this new system of classification will make it much easier to read and clearer to understand. Anyways, I’ve blabbered on long enough, and I think it’s time we get into some film! This week is pretty busy, with a western, a raunchy comedy, and a family movie all competing for box office dominance. But which one’s worth your time and, more importantly, money this weekend? That’s right, everyone: It’s time for another Cinema Showdown!

Chicago – Call it too much holiday eggnog, but the re-imagining of the immortal classic “Gulliver’s Travels,’ starring Jack Black, Emily Blunt and Jason Segal, has a little Yuletide fun and hurts no one. If you like Jack Black, you’ll enjoy the film. If you don’t, find another way to spend 93 minutes this tinsel time weekend.

Jack Black stars in a defanged version of Jonathan Swift's 18th-century satire. By Peter Bradshaw
To make a faithful version of Swift's 18th-century satirical fantasy Gulliver's Travels, you'd probably need to get Tim Burton to team up with Ken Loach. Or maybe get Michael Winterbottom to make something with the witty, freewheeling, questing spirit of his Tristram Shandy film A Cock and Bull Story. As it happens, this moderate new Hollywood version is directed by Rob Letterman, whose previous credits include Shark Tale and Monsters Vs Aliens and co-scripted by Shrek writer Joe Stillman. As is traditional with Gulliver adaptations, the third and fourth sections of the book are entirely missed out – that is, the sections with the Struldbrugs, the Yahoos and Houyhnhnms – and all we get is the first two tales, in which Gulliver first visits Lilliput, where everyone is very small, and then (briefly) Brobdingnag, where they are very big.

Updating the tales of Lemuel Gulliver to an age of iPhones, Guitar Hero and internet plagiarism is all well and good and as a frame on which to hang another virtuoso ‘Jack Black as Jack Black’ performance it should provide a broad enough base for an enjoyable, engaging comedy. It doesn’t.
Black plays a postal room worker in a publishing house who begins the film by being overlooked for a managerial position in favour of an employee on his first day and decides to change his life, and win the heart of Amanda Peet’s Travel Editor by applying for a travel writer’s position. One night of cribbing from the Time Out and Lonely Planet websites and he gets his first assignment – to investigate the Bermuda Triangle and so we are on our way.

Jack Black takes centre stage in Gulliver's Travels. But is this a Boxing Day treat, or a massive misfire? Pete finds out...
When I first heard about Gulliver's Travels starring Jack Black, during one of the Orange Wednesday adverts, I assumed it to be a rather amusing joke. The juxtaposition of rent-a-slacker Jack Black with a classic satirical novel made for a hilarious spoof of the way children's films have been headed in recent years.
Imagine my surprise, then, when this turned out to be a real film, out in cinemas this Boxing Day. I tried to reserve judgement. I've seen School of Rock many times, Tenacious D songs Tribute and Wonderboy are regular visitors to my MP3 player, and I even tried to like The Pick of Destiny. As I went into the screening, I was trepidatious - would it turn out to be a Christmas cracker, or a cold,...

The noughties were kind to Jack Black. That was the decade he pushed on from sporadic appearances in films such as Enemy of the State and The Cable Guy, raising his game to what has become an almost steady stream of hits by perfecting a lovable bombast and a grin almost as big as his belly.
Now very much aimed at the kids and young adult market, the Tenacious D front man has once again proven with his latest picture Gulliver’s Travels that when it comes to making a big imprint, he has the feet to do the job.
Taking on the role of Lemuel Gulliver, Black has made a change from the hunter-gatherer of Columbia Pictures’ Year One to mail-room clerk at the New York Tribune in the latest adaptation of Jonathan Swift’s classic novel. A modern take on the giant adventure, Gulliver is a cowardly no-hoper...

The marketing is now officially underway for the upcoming Jack Black comedy Gulliver's Travels, a potential holiday blockbuster that we had heard very little about up until now. It is a modern adaptation of the classic novel by Jonathan Swift, with Black playing a prospective travel writer who takes an assignment in Bermuda, only to stumble upon the island of Lilliput where everyone is one-twelfth the size of normal humans. Although this is only part of the original story, the trailer seems to focus only on the inhabitants of this island, so it is probably a safe assumption that the other adventures will play out in sequels. As much as I like Jack Black, I have to say, I'm not sure about this flick. It definitely has the same feel as the Night at the Museum films, although it is directed by Rob Letterman (Monsters vs. Aliens, Shark Tale). The...

Gulliver's Travels is the film Emily Blunt was contractually obligated to star in causing her to have to drop out of Iron Man 2 and allowing Scarlett Johansson to step into the role of Black Widow. She didn't have any choice in the matter so it's not like we can say whether or not she made a good decision, but it is an interesting little factoid if you ask me.
Set for release on December 22, Gulliver's Travels stars Jack Black as the title character, a big-talking mailroom clerk who, after he's mistakenly assigned a travel piece on the Bermuda Triangle, suddenly finds himself a giant among men when he washes ashore on the hidden island of Lilliput, home to a population of very tiny people. At first enslaved by the diminutive and industrious Liliputians, and later declared their hero, Gulliver comes to learn that it's how big you are on the inside that counts.

Fox has just released the first trailer for Gulliver’s Travels. You can see it in HD over at Apple or watch it embedded below.
Starring Jack Black, directed by Rob Letterman and written by Joe Stillman and Nicholas Stoller, it ’s obvious from the trailer that this is predominantly a comedy and judging by the trailer this is going to rest heavily on Jack Black.
Black is very popular but also something of an acquired taste so I wonder if this is going to have the huge appeal that Fox are perhaps hoping for. Unsurprisingly, Jack Black will be coming at you in 3D in this 21st century take on Gulliver’s Travels.

Fox unveils the first poster for Gulliver's Travels, starring Jack Black…
Originally written in 1726, Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels became, thanks to the author's biting wit and playful imagination, popular among readers of all ages. Told in four parts, the story saw its sea-faring protagonist encounter humans both tiny and colossal, a magnetically floating island populated by a tyrannical king, and finally an unknown continent and its population of intellectual horses.
There have been several attempts to adapt Swift's imaginative satire in the past, including an early silent film by Georges Méliès, a 1939 animated feature by Dave Fleischer, and a television mini-series in 1996 with Ted Danson starring as the titular Gulliver.
Now it's 20th Century Fox's turn to produce their take on the 18th century novel, which this time stars Jack Black as Gulliver, the "surgeon and captain of several ships" of the original novel. What's clear from both...

Joe Stillman's script has an annoyingly anachronistic hippie protester, and the film runs out of comic steam well before the end
Here is a moderately funny family animation, written by Joe Stillman (the author of Shrek and Shrek 2) set on a far-off planet whose bug-eyed creatures and general ambience very much resemble 1950s America, complete with an ongoing craze for red-scare alien-invasion movies. (The look of some of the aliens seems also to have been taken from Matt Groening's Futurama.)
The townsfolk are then terrified by their very own real live "alien invasion": this is a smug beefcake astronaut from Nasa on Earth, who lands in the module, intending – as he plaintively confesses – only to plant Old Glory, knock a few golf-balls around and head on home. Instead, he's made the discovery of the millennium.
It's amiable stuff, but Stillman's script has an annoyingly anachronistic hippie protester,...

Madrid -- Spain's €60 million ($90.4 million) animated feature "Planet 51" has earned some $40 million in its first 10 days of release in the U.S., Spain and Canada, making it Spain's biggest worldwide boxoffice grosser in 2009.
DeaPlaneta released the animated film produced by Ilion Animation Studios, Handmade Films and Antena 3 Films in Spain Nov. 27, with 500 copies -- an unusually high number in Spain -- and earned more than €3 million ($4.5 million) over the opening weekend, making it the best non-u.S. animation opening in Spain.
The Spanish premiere came a week after Sony released "Planet 51" in the U.S., with more than $28.5 million earned to date.
The worldwide figures place the animated comedy, written by "Shrek's" Joe Stillman with lead voices by Dwayne Johnson and Jessica Biel, ahead of Spain's other international hits this year, Alejandro Amenabar's "Agora" and Pedro Almodovar's "Broken Embraces."

Director(s): Jorge Blanco, Javier Abad (co-director) Writer: Joe Stillman Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel, Justin Long, Gary Oldman, John Cleese, Seann William Scott It's the 1950s on Planet 51, and young Lem (Justin Long) is a budding astronomer. Lem is convinced there's more to the universe than what he's been spoon-fed by his elders, but pacifying the elders proves beneficial in furthering his dreams. Just when things are looking up for Lem, along comes Captain Charles T. Baker (Dwayne Johnson), 21st Century astronaut from Earth, and alien enemy to Planet 51. Lem finds himself caught between saving “Chuck” Baker and siding with the town, a sort of hapless group of vigilantes bent on seeing the alien on the dissection table. While Baker is amazed to find the planet inhabited by little green creatures, he is even more shocked to find himself running for his life through a very Mayberryesque alien landscape.

The full theatrical trailer for the animated 3D film Planet 51 has appeared at Yahoo. The film is about a human astronaut (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) who lands on an alien planet, only to discover that it looks exactly like Earth. Sure, the denizens are green aliens, but otherwise they're just like us...and not too happy to have an alien invader in their midst. Gary Oldman, Jessica Biel, Justin Long and John Cleese are also in the voice cast. Joe Stillman (Shrek and Shrek 2, the upcoming Gulliver's Travels) is credited with the script and Jorge Blanco, Javier Abad and Marcos Martinezare co-directed. See the trailer after the jump. Planet 51 isn't quite a world just like ours -- more like stereotypical '50s America, only where the women walk little alien dogs. (By which I mean zenomorph, chestbursting dogs.) The dogs are the least of astronaut Chuck Baker's problems,...
