We live in a golden era of sci-fi on TV, where "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" come in multiple flavors, "Stranger Things" is an event every season, and the CW recently wrapped up an entire universe of DC Comics superheroes on the small screen. Fortunately for all sci-fi fans, this is a time where the people who make such shows grew up loving them, and critics who review them were raised on the concepts and get it. This is all a relatively new phenomenon.
As recently as the '90s, TV critics weren't necessarily big on high-concept sci-fi, and the people making these shows didn't always know what they were doing either. Even if they did, producers over their heads weren't necessarily making the best decisions either. Superheroes on TV were entirely different three decades ago, and the weekly format was just discovering the notion of season-long arcs. There were growing pains to be sure,...

"His lines were so clean and so sharp." "There's a certain magic involved." An official trailer is available for a documentary film celebrating the life and work of an iconic comic book artist / beloved illustrator named Dave Stevens. Directed by Kelvin Mao, the film Dave Stevens: Drawn to Perfection will be out on VOD to watch starting in early December later this year. Dave Stevens is best known as the creator of The Rocketeer comic series and also for reintroducing the world to 50's pin-up model Bettie Page. The Rocketeer celebrated its 30th anniversary earlier this summer. The 1991 film starred Bill Campbell as Cliff Secord, a young stunt pilot who ends up in possession of an experimental jetpack and ends up embroiled in a crossfire between Nazi spies (led by Timothy Dalton), and the mafia (led by Paul Sorvino). It’s a terrific, charming action-adventure film, effectively paying homage to the movie serials of the 1930s and other Hollywood flicks of the era, all set to one of James Horner’s very best scores. But despite positive reviews, The Rocketeer wasn’t quite the Batman-sized blockbuster that studio Buena Vista Pictures hoped for at the time, and there were never any sequels produced.
While based on a gorgeous comic by Dave Stevens (who worked closely with the film’s writers Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo to adapt the character to the screen), there weren’t a whole...

A strong case could be made that Disney’s 1991 film The Rocketeer is the best comic book movie Hollywood has ever produced. Director Joe Johnston delivered pitch-perfect execution of the film’s soaring adventure story, sparking the imaginations of a generation and wonderfully capturing the spirit of comic book writer/artist Dave Stevens‘ 1930s-era stories of derring-do. Dynamite Entertainment has resurrected sexy 1950's pinup "Bettie Page" as a new comic book series, written by David Avallone and illustrated by Colton Worely, available July 2017:
"Like a lot of people my age, I ‘discovered’ Bettie Page through comics," said writer Avallone, "when Dave Stevens used her to inspire the ingénue starlet of 'The Rocketeer'.

"After a lot of research into the life and times of Bettie, I chose to put her in Hollywood at the start of the fifties and the beginning of her modeling career...built on some corners of her real biography, and the real history of the time. I hope I’ve made my fictional Bettie as funny, as sweet,...

It was only a pitch, but this would have been a very different kind of Rocketeer reboot.
There's so many things that could have been. We could have, for instance, had a Rocketeer 2, if only the first film had performed at the box office the way it was expected to. The Rocketeer is a wonderful little gem of an adventure movie, that, while flawed, certainly could have sustained another movie or two if the timing had been right. It wasn't of course, and its big screen prospects have been dead ever since.

News that Disney intends to reboot The Rocketeer might have surprised many when it broke on Heat Vision this morning, but to longtime followers of the character, it's something that seems sensible, if not outright necessary. After all, more than most comic book heroes, the Rocketeer that was — 1930s pilot Cliff Secord — was personified by his creator, Dave Stevens. The character first appeared in the back pages of Starslayer, an independently produced comic book series from Southern California's Pacific Comics in 1982, running in the second and third issues before headlining the initial two issues of Pacific Presents

Disney is developing a reboot of The Rocketeer, to be headlined by a young African-American woman. Based on the graphic novel by Dave Stevens, the 1991 film version starred Bill Campbell as Cliff Secord, a pilot who comes into possession of an experimental jet pack in 1938 Los Angeles. Directed by Joe Johnston, the adventure was spirited and wholesome, featuring Jennifer Connelly as an aspiring actress (changed from her job as a nude, Betty Page-ish model in the source material), Alan Arkin as Cliff's mechanic mentor, and Timothy Dalton as Neville Sinclair, a swashbuckling actor (like Errol Flynn) who turns out to be a Nazi spy. The movie was affectionately nostalgic, wonderfully propulsive, included a variety of splendid old-fashioned action, and sadly, proved to be...

Here’s a blast from the past. Disney is looking to bring The Rocketeer back to the big screen in what’s being termed a sequel-reboot (whatever that means), this according to The Hollywood Reporter. The publication has equally interesting news — the next iteration of the 1991 movie will feature a black female as the main character. For those unfamiliar with the original flick, it starred Billy Campbell as a stunt pilot who unearths a jetpack which he uses to fly around and fight Nazis. The movie also featured Jennifer Connelly and Timothy Dalton. It was based on the graphic novel of the same name. The Rocketeer underperformed at the box office and received mixed reviews from critics. On a production budget of an unadjusted $35 million, the movie made just $46 million. The film, according to an interview with Rocketeer creator Dave Stevens, was initially supposed to be part of a trilogy,...

In what can only be described as welcome news, Disney has announced its plans to re-launch The Rocketeer with a sequel intended to reboot the property as franchise material – with a black woman as the central hero. The original film was released in 1991 to lacklustre response in theatres – but found a devoted audience later as it settled in to the home entertainment market. The new movie will be titled The Rocketeers.
The Rocketeer is a comic book character, created in 1982 by Dave Stevens, and was designed to be an homage to the heroes of the 1930s and 1940s. His real name is Cliff Secord, and he is a stunt pilot who stumbles upon a strange but functional jet pack. In the original movie, set in 1938 and directed by Joe Johnston, he uses the jet pack to fight Nazis as the Second World War commences. Secord is played by Billy Campbell,...

Walt Disney Studios is continuing its reboot spree with the classic 1991 action adventure film “The Rocketeer.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project is titled “The Rocketeers” and is in the early stages of development. It will be written by Max Winkler and Matt Spicer and is considered more of a sequel-reboot with a modern-day twist, toplined by a black female character.
The film will keep the story in a period setting and offer a fresh view on the characters. Set six years after the original “Rocketeer” and after Secord has vanished while fighting the Nazis, an unlikely new hero emerges: a young African–American female pilot, who takes up the mantle of Rocketeer in an attempt to stop an ambitious and corrupt rocket scientist from stealing jet-pack technology in what could prove to be a turning point in the Cold War.

Walt Disney Studios has begun development of "The Rocketeers," a semi-sequel and semi-reboot of Joe Johnson's 1991 action adventure film "The Rocketeer". Max Winkler and Matt Spicer will pen the script which will be headlined by a black female character.

When The Rocketeer was originally released in 1991, it was a box office flop. Now, over twenty years later, it’s clear that it was simply a few decades ahead of its time. Top 10 Christmas List
As we begin the holiday season, my good friend Michael Connally asked me to put together a top 10-wish list for Christmas.
Cook’s “Top 10 for the Holiday’s” List:
10. Ronin Warriors – DVD Price - $20
I have never followed anime much, but at one point I thoroughly enjoyed Ronin Warriors. It was first introduced in 1988. Its plot centers around the demon lord of the Netherworld who is bent on conquering the mortal world. Standing against him and his four Dark Warlords are the five Ronin Warriors, each in possession of mystical armor and weapons. They are assisted by a young student-teacher, and a mysterious warrior-monk known only as The Ancient (Wikipedia). I found the storyline to be quite entertaining with each warrior’s powers balancing one another, as do their individual personalities. The tale also provides interesting inspiration from Japanese folklore / culture.

The Rocketeer remains one of the great Indy comics creations, as well as an example of an under-rated early version of the comic-book movie. Dave Stevens’ inspired creation is still hugely popular with comics fans 33 years after it first appeared (sporting the most beautiful artwork) and 23 years after the movie. And this new figure from Funko is simply the best Rocketeer action figure ever made!
Funko Legacy Collection figures have around 20 points of articulation making them super poseable and come with accessories. Standing 6″ tall, The Rocketeer is set for a release in June.

Here’s a throwback for all the children of the late '70s and '80s. Created by Dave Stevens, Cliff Secord was a stunt pilot who discovered a mysterious jet pack, which gave him the ability to fly. Donning the equipment, Secord became The Rocketeer, a crime-fighter who took on, among other foes, the Nazis. Stevens’ airborne adventurer first appeared in comic book form in 1982. Then, in 1991, he flew onto the big screen in Disney’s “The Rocketeer," directed by Joe Johnston (“Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Jumanji,” “Honey I Shrunk the Kids”). Bill Campbell (now Billy Campbell, and perhaps most recognizable for his portrayal of Darren Richmond on “The Killing”) played the titular stuntman. As a lead-in to the film, which opened in late June 1991, Campbell hosted a half-hour documentary on the character and mankind’s ever-burning desire to fly unimpeded. Ah, 1991. The year Robert Patrick ran after cars in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and Kevin Costner grew a spectacular mullet for Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. But outside the top ten blockbuster list, there lies an entire world of other, less celebrated films to discover.
Some of the movies on this list have been included because they were overlooked in theatres, while others have been added because they were unfairly dismissed by critics. One or two others were modest successes, but (whisper it) we decided to include them anyway because we really, really like them.
So here, for your delectation, is our pick of 25 underappreciated films from 1991.

As a child of the 1980s, I raised myself on a steady diet of terrible zero-budget cable slasher flicks. I would scour the TV Guide to check out what was playing that night, and keep my fingers crossed that my parents would go to bed before my movie would start, so I could sneak into the living room and watch it (at a very, very low volume, lest it wake them.) Brinke Stevens, one of the three "original" scream queens (along with Linnea Quigley and Michelle Bauer) was a frequent star of these cheap little flicks. With over 150 titles to her credit, picking out even a handful of her most well-known credits is tough, but let's try. Slumber Party Massacre, Sorority Babes in the Slime Ball Bowl-a-Rama, and Haunting Fear all spring to mind. After over 30 years in the horror industry, she, Linnea, and Michelle finally have a documentary, Screaming in High Heels.

Disney has announced that they will relaunch the character "The Rocketeer" for the big screen.
Created by writer/illustrator Dave Stevens, "The Rocketeer" superhero character debuted in 1982 as a comic book homage to the Saturday movie matinee heroes of the 1930's and 1940's.
"The Rocketeer" focuses on 'Cliff Secord', a stunt pilot who discovers a mysterious jet pack that allows him to fly.
Stevens' "Rocketeer" adventures were influenced by Republic's "King of the Rocket Men" movie serial and syndicated "Commando Cody" TV series.
In 1991, "The Rocketeer" was released as a feature by Walt Disney Pictures, directed by Joe Johnston ("Captain America: The First Avenger").
The series was published by various comic book companies previous to Idw, including Pacific, Eclipse, Comico and Dark Horse.

Given the current reboot and remake cycle permeating Hollywood, this news should come as no surprise: "The Rocketeer" is reportedly being eyed for a do over.
Vulture reports that Disney is putting the wheels in motion for a new adaptation of the "Rocketeer" comic books, previously brought to life on screen in 1991's adventure film starring Billy Campbell and Jennifer Connelly. No writers, directors or actors are currently attached, according to the report, but the reboot is said to be "one of the first priorities" for the new Disney regime led by Alan Horn.

With the pack in tow and a big honking metal helmet on his head, Secord takes to the skies to fight crime as the Rocketeer.

Good news for fans of Zeppelins, jet packs and Art Deco helmets; after 21 years, at least according to Vulture, Disney are finally returning to The Rocketeer.
In spite of being utterly awesome, Joe Johnson’s 1991 movie about a pilot who finds a rocket pack and uses it to fight Nazis bombed at the box office, but over the years it’s picked up a pretty large cohort of fans, most of whom (at least if last nights Twitterings were anything to go by) seem rather positive about the potential of a Rocketeer Rebake.
No word yet on potential directors or stars, but Disney are set to meet writers ‘soon’ to work out which direction to take with the property. The original was very much inspired by the success of the Indiana Jones films, and not too dissimilar in tone to Johnson’s far more successful, other WWII superhero flick, Captain America,...

After buying out Marvel Comics, and by way of possession, Marvel Studios, Walt Disney Pictures is in the superhero movie business big time. Their shareholders are feeling pretty good about the studio releasing the billion dollar Avengers movie, and Marvel Studios is moving ahead with its second wave of feature films. All signs point to continued success, and uncovering new ways for Disney to crosspromote Marvel's pantheon of recognizable heroes in all of the company's many different divisions.
So why would Disney want to dust off a non-Marvel superhero project like The Rocketeer and reboot it for a new generation?
Vulture broke the story about the House of Mouse wanting to make a second Rocketeer film. The first one was directed by Joe Johnson, the same guy that directed Marvel's Captain America: The First Avenger. However, while the Cap movie was a financial success, Johnson's 1991 Rocketeer movie failed to fly at the box office.

There are plenty of movie franchises out there that are potentially ripe for a reboot, but I certainly didn't think that Disney's The Rocketeer would ever fall into that category. The original film, based on the comic by Dave Stevens, was a box office disappointment back in 1991, making just $46 million despite an extensive multi-million dollar marketing campaign and despite featuring then-current James Bond actor Timothy Dalton as a villain. Some thought that the Disney label scared off older audiences, while others thought the period setting had limited its appeal. Either way, Disney's new head honcho Alan Horn now seems to feel that the property still has some life left in it, and he is reportedly in the process of setting up a reboot. Considering that comic book movies are a much bigger deal today, will moviegoers be more receptive the second time around? According to Vulture, Disney is currently in...

The Rocketeer is a comic book series that follows the story of a reckless but heroic pilot in the 1930's and 40's who finds a rocket pack and secretly uses it to battle Nazis and other foes. Created by writer/artist Dave Stevens, the property spurred a 1991 period adventure film produced by Walt Disney Pictures and starring Billy Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin, Timothy Dalton and Paul Sorvino. Set in 1938 Los Angeles, California, The Rocketeer told the story of stunt pilot Cliff Secord who discovers a jet pack that enables him to fly. His actions attract the attention of Howard Hughes and the FBI, as well as sadistic Nazi operatives. The film toned the very adult context of the comic, which featured Cliff's girlfriend Betty -- Bettie Page inspired actress/pin-up model -- in racy...

It's all fun and games until they start remaking your favorite films, and then it's war! A remake of Joe Johnston's The Rocketeer is now under development by Disney, according to Vulture. It's in the early stages, with the studio planning to meet soon with writers who will be pitching their ideas. The 1991 movie was based on the independent comic book series by Dave Stevens, first published in 1982 and set in the 1930s, featuring pilot Cliff Secord and his voluptuous girlfriend Jenny. Bill Campbell and Jennifer Connelly played those roles in the movie, with Alan Arkin as Cliff's mechanic buddy, Timothy Dalton as a preening actor, and a very fine supporting cast. I've always loved the movie and have been happy to...

While Disney has lately been buoyed up by the output of studios it acquired – Marvel, Pixar etc. – the company is still committed to making new movies under the original Mouse House banner. Now the team at Vulture has heard that it might be digging into the archives to breathe new life into The Rocketeer. Originally released in 1991 and based on Dave Stevens’ 1982 work for Pacific Comics, The Rocketeer saw Bill Campbell as Cliff Secord, a daredevil racing pilot in the late 1930s who discovers an experimental rocket jet pack stolen from Howard Hughes. When he uses the pack to become a masked hero, he faces trouble from the gangsters who stole it in the first place and eventually ends up battling Nazis. With Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin and Timothy Dalton in the cast and Joe Johnston calling the shots, the original didn’t exactly set the box office aflame, but...
