Remember 2017’s “The Hitman’s Bodyguard”? No, seriously — do you? Does anyone? You might be surprised to learn that it has spawned a new sequel, “Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard”; you might not be surprised to learn that returning director Patrick Hughes has made a movie even more negligible and forgettable than the first one.
These aren’t movies as much as they are spreadsheets; we can imagine the math that determined that an action-comedy starring Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek — all reprising their roles, alongside new additions Antonio Banderas and Morgan Freeman — could make x number of money based on a budget of y dollars and Euros. What we can’t imagine is how Hughes and screenwriters Tom O’Connor, Phillip Murphy, and Brandon Murphy can so consistently turn a silk purse of a cast into a sow’s ear of a film.

It is 1978 in the City of Angels and the hard-drinking washed-up sleuth Carson Phillips is having another boozy day through its atmospheric streets. There is a hint of innate coolness and self-deprecation in his elongated voiceover intro — you might even briefly mistake Carson, played by a one-note John Travolta, for a Philip Marlowe or Jake Gittes type. But “The Poison Rose,” an astonishingly listless neo-noir wannabe from director George Gallo (writer of 1988’s “Midnight Run”), is not the deliberately poor “Chinatown” imitation it starts off as — that could have been perversely daring, maybe even somewhat entertaining. It in fact becomes something a lot worse, when Carson heads to Galveston, Texas, in search of a missing person, at which point, viewers are taken hostage by this mix of mysterious exes, confusing accents, and desperately labored plotting.

The Hitman's Wife’s Bodyguard is coming with Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson.
The Hitman's Bodyguard 2 is in the works, with the appropriately irreverent title of The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard. The first movie was a fun (and quite funny) and flawed action movie, one that felt like a blend of late night '80s/'90s action movies but with the added benefit of Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson engaging in rapid fire smartassery throughout. So with a title like The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard you should know that the wife in question is Salma Hayek's hilarious Sonia Kincaid, a character who certainly amped up every scene. Seriously, she was great.
Patrick Hughes returns as director. Reynolds, Jackson, and Hayek will be joined by Antonia Banderas, Morgan Freeman, Frank Grillo, and Richard E. Grant.
Here's the official synopsis:

Flesh and Bone, Season 1
Created by Moira Walley-Beckett
Aired Sundays at 8 pm Et on Starz
Over the past few years, Starz has made its mark on the tv landscape with numerous shows, from Spartacus to Party Down. Their latest series, from Breaking Bad writer Moira Walley-Beckett, delves into the world of ballet dancing. Titled Flesh and Bone, the miniseries explores the world from the perspective of the people associated with the American Ballet Company, and while there are some strong ideas and themes presented, the series unfortunately fails to develop them effectively.
The season’s focus is on power and control, most notably the type that is exerted over women by men. The effects that control has over different characters is by far the most compelling aspect of the season, starting from Claire’s attempts to get out of the control of the men surrounding her. This begins with the...

Scream Factory and IFC Midnight have paired up to present an inspired disc set for The Larry Fessenden Collection, an assortment of four of the director’s most notable genre films. Migrating between a number of notable projects as a character actor (he usually appears as some peripheral, grizzled weirdo, showing up in titles by Scorsese, Neil Jordan, and Kelly Reichardt, amongst others), he’s also a noted producer, editor, screenwriter, and cinematographer. But Fessenden’s made his most striking impression with a growing body of genre oriented independent directorial efforts. Usually prizing strong characterization amidst situations of mounting dread, Fessenden seems fascinated with testing the strengths and inherent weaknesses of mankind, and it’s probably easiest to label his filmography as environmental horror.
Out of Fessenden’s own production company Glass Eye Pix, 1991’s No Telling (or the Frankenstein Complex) melds motifs of Mary Shelley’s famed mad scientist with modern animal experimentation.

From Disney, McFarland USA is the true story of Jim White (played by Kevin Costner), a cross country coach in a small California town who transforms a team of disadvantaged high school athletes into championship contenders. When Jim Batts reviwed McFarland USA here at We Are Movie Geeks, he wrote “(director) Niki Caro expertly captures the look of this little burg that may seem insignificant, but his home to fiercely protective and supportive neighbors. She also captures the dedication of these runners that’s reminiscent of Chariots Of Fire. There’s the heat, the exhaustion, even the monotony. And even though they’re part of a team, there’s that solitary testing of one’s abilities. Unfortunately the screenplay doesn’t avoid the culture clash clichés with the uptight wasps lightening up by being near the colorful earthy ethnics. And there’s the familiar riff on the sports underdogs, the...

There is a recognizable template to inspirational sports dramas developed by Disney. You have a beleaguered coach figure trying to reclaim his former glory. You have a rowdy, unmotivated group of ragtag players that just need to add discipline to their raw talent to attain success. You have an antagonist buoyed by prestige or power that the underdog protagonists have to face. You have montages set to swelling music, and of course, the inevitable down-to-the-wire speech, of which any dedicated fan of the genre could recite a variation. Oh, and most of the time, they are based on a true story.
The sport is different but the song remains the same for McFarland, USA. Kevin Costner continues his dismal streak of performances after Three Days to Kill and Draft Day, as high-school football coach Jim White. After roughing up a student, White loses his job at an elite secondary school...

One of the overriding messages of almost any film festival is "Wow, families are screwed up." What makes a dysfunctional family film work is when the specifics of how one particular family is broken manages to somehow illuminate something universal about how difficult that dynamic can be overall. There are times when I feel like I should call my parents and yell at them for being normal and loving and taking great care of me because maybe I'd be a more tormented and successful artist if only they'd been selfish dicks. At last year's Toronto Film Festival, one of the hottest tickets was "August: Osage County," with John Wells adapting the Tracy Letts play as an "Oh, my god, Meryl Streep is great" vehicle. I was in that initial line last year for about an hour, surrounded by people who were positively frantic to get in, and they seemed genuinely...

Confronting their history and the frayed states of their relationships among the people who know and love them best, they ultimately reconnect in hysterical and emotionally affecting ways amid the chaos, humor, heartache and redemption that only families can provide—driving us insane even as they remind us of our truest, and often best, selves.

Los Angeles -- It's easy to understand why Hollywood loves doing business with author Nicholas Sparks. His books are huge best-sellers, and several of the films adapted from his novels – "Message in a Bottle," "The Notebook," and "Dear John" – have achieved impressive box office grosses. The latest Sparks adaptation, "Safe Haven," will probably continue his winning streak, especially with its Valentine's Day opening pegged to lure female fans. A thriller element that has not been present in earlier Sparks movies is designed to draw reluctant male viewers to see the picture, but they won't respond with the same enthusiasm as his core audience of woozy romantics.
The mystery plot recalls a 1991 Julia Roberts movie, Sleeping with the Enemy, in which the heroine fled an abusive husband and tried to re-invent herself in a brand new community. In this case our heroine, Katie (Julianne Hough), runs away from a toxic marriage in Boston,...

Lasse Hallström is one of the more consistent directors of popcorn schmaltz working today, though even he can’t find a way to make sense of Nicholas Sparks’ latest foray into trite truisms and punishing sentimentality.
The film begins enticingly enough, as a young woman named Katie (Julianne Hough) arrives in a small South Carolina town, having run away from something (or someone) troubling in her past. When she meets charming, good-looking store owner Alex (Josh Duhamel), the pair hit it off, though Katie is torn between keeping a low profile and giving in to her feelings. It all comes to a head once Detective Tierney (David Lyons) arrives in town, and her secret slowly unfurls.
It’ll take the most forgiving and undemanding Valentine’s Day audiences for Safe Haven to find its feet; more so than any other Nicholas Sparks adaptation, this date movie...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences brings you the Oscars (yep, that's why they're called Academy Awards), and on Friday, the organization announced that it was prepared to invite 176 new folks to its fold.
In a list posted on its website, the Academy deemed Matthew McConaughey, Jean Dujardin, Terrence Malick, Jonah Hill, Berenice Bejo, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer and a host of other film luminaries worthy of inclusion in its nearly 6,000-member army.
The Academy has drawn the ire of critics who bemoan its overwhelmingly male, white population. A Los Angeles Times investigation found that of all Academy members, 94 percent are Caucasian and 77 percent are male. A mere 2 percent are black, with Latinos constituting an even smaller portion. Only 14 percent of members are under the age of 50.
Full members of the Academy select and vote on Oscars nominees. The organization was started in 1927 and is now governed by a 43-person board.

Picking on "Salmon Fishing In The Yemen" makes us feel like a bit of a bully, as though we're mercilessly teasing that super nice but incredibly dumb girl in class. It's an affable, inoffensive British comedy that just wants you to like it so much that you can't help but snicker behind its back. Or are we the only ones who are that cruel?
Based on Paul Torday's novel, "Salmon Fishing In The Yemen" follows the efforts of a team to bring a salmon run to the Middle Eastern country at the request of an ambitious sheikh/amateur fisherman (Amr Waked, "Syriana"). The sheikh's representative Harriet (Emily Blunt) approaches fisheries expert Dr. Fred Jones (Ewan McGregor), who initially scoffs at the idea, then is reluctantly tasked with the enormous, multi-million dollar project. Meanwhile, the British prime minister is tired of all the bad press coming out of the area,...

Release Date: Feb. 5 Director: Lasse Hallström Writers: Jamie Linden (screenplay), Nicholas Sparks (novel) Cinematographer: Terry Stacey Starring: Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried, Richard Jenkins, Henry Thomas Studio/Run Time: Sony Screen Gems, 105 mins. There is nothing misleading about a film based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. For the past decade, titles like The Notebook, A Walk to Remember, Nights in Rodanthe and Message in a Bottle unabashedly wielded the looks of love (and two more of his novels are in studio development). The trend continues with Dear John, a romantic tale of love found, love lost and love stupidly...

When it comes right down to the bare essentials, the nitty-gritty facts of what makes a movie work for an audience on the most basic level, it always boils down to emotions. Good horror movies scare us, good comedies make us laugh, some movies make us feel good, some make us sad – whatever the emotion is, if the audience truly experiences that emotion through the film, that film has succeeded.
Swedish director Lasse Hallstrom is not my favorite filmmaker, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy his movies. If the name doesn’t ring any bells, I am sure his career as a Hollywood director will. Hallstrom is known particularly for his often emotional, somewhat sentimentally-driven films, usually adapted from popular books, such as Cider House Rules, Chocolat, and What’S Eating Gilbert Grape? Personally, I’ve found his best work to be An Unfinished Life.

Few films I have noticed at Sundance have paid as much attention to script as this exquisite adaptation of Jonathan Ames’ novel "The Extra Man". The film’s central character is one Louis Ives, [a perfectly cast Paul Dano], a lonely dreamer who fancies himself the hero of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel while thinking about cross-dressing, an early experiment of which gets him fired from his college job.
He then heads to Manhattan to become a writer where he rents a room in the ramshackle apartment of Henry Harrison [Kevin Kline], a wildly eccentric, but brilliant, playwright who happens to be an 'extra man'—a kind of social escort for the wealthy widows of New York’s high society. The two form an unexpected bond that ultimately runs deeper than either one could imagine.

Tell Tale (playing this week at the Tribeca Film Festival) is a movie that serves as a metaphor for itself on a couple of levels. It’s about a physical heart that’s transplanted from one body to another; the script transplants Edgar Allan Poe’s 19th-century classic story “The Tell-Tale Heart” into a 21st-century chiller; and the direction by Michael Cuesta, in concert with the performances, transplants an unusual amount of figurative heart into what could have played as B-movie material.
After opening with a juicy operation sequence, the movie settles in with Terry Bernard (Josh Lucas), the recipient of the new ticker who has another medical situation occupying his attention: His young daughter Angela (Beatrice Miller) has a genetic disorder that requires frequent visits to the family doctor, Elizabeth Clemson (Lena Headey). Terry and Elizabeth’s professional interactions are starting to develop into a personal relationship, to Angela’s approval,...

Modest coming-of-age flick thrives in details
Adventureland is a part of a long tradition of autobiographical coming-of-age stories, a genre that covers more movies than we often admit. It’s reasonable to assume these stories remain so popular because they're personal to filmmakers, but curiously, the actual movies are almost all the same—quirky caricatures of youth spliced with the usual awkward rites and first loves. Together they create a fantasy of shared adolescent experience that’s easy to embrace, especially since it usually ends with a smooth welcome into the future.

"Adventureland" is around the corner. The Greg Mottola directed and written film finds theatres on April 3rd. Mottola is responsible for "Superbad," one of the funniest films in recent times. A talented cast works their magic in "Adventureland" including Jesse Eisenberg of "The Hunting Party," "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds ("Smokin' Aces"), Kristen Wiig ("Forgetting Sarah Marshall") and Bill Hader who also notched up laughs in "Superbad" alongside Seth Rogen. For the sake of interest, we've briefly compiled a list of amusement park scenes from films we found most memorable. These can be found after you read what "Adventureland" is all about. What's "Adventureland" about? It's the summer of 1987, and James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg), an uptight recent college grad, can't wait to embark on his dream tour of Europe. But when his parents (Wendie Malick and Jack Gilpin) announce they can no longer subsidize his trip, James has little...

It's the summer of 1987, and James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg), an uptight recent college grad, can't wait to embark on his dream tour of Europe. But when his parents (Wendie Malick and Jack Gilpin) announce they can no longer subsidize his trip, James has little choice but to take a lowly job at a local amusement park. Forget about German beer, world-famous museums and cute French girls-James' summer will now be populated by belligerent dads, stuffed pandas, and screaming kids high on cotton candy. Lucky for James, what should have been his worst summer ever turns into quite an adventure as he discovers love in the most unlikely place with his captivating co-worker Em (Kristen Stewart), and learns to loosen up.
