Reconstructing the US senate investigation that followed the disaster, this was made with a tiny fraction of James Cameron’s budget but has an authentic feel
It’s been over a century since the Rms Titanic disaster, and while all manner of catastrophes have happened since, somehow this one haunts the imagination of storytellers and historians. You could blame James Cameron for making the blockbuster Titanic in 1997, but clearly that film was a symptom not a cause. Maybe it’s the scale of tragedy, the huge numbers of dead, or the adjacent fact that so many of them died senselessly because there weren’t enough lifeboats and the upper-class passengers were packed on to what boats there were before the tired, huddled masses travelling below deck could even get close.
Made on a limited budget that probably wouldn’t have covered the cost of supplying the crew with biscuits for Cameron’s epic,...

George C. Wolfe’s biopic of Bayard Rustin (Colman Domingo), the civil rights activist who helped put together one of the largest peaceful protests in American history in 1963, takes on added resonance in the wake of recent violence in Israel and Gaza. The March for Freedom and Jobs on Washington and the current protests around the world in support of Palestinians are separated by decades and origins, and while Rustin doesn’t bridge the gap between these events, it reminds one of how much activism has changed over six decades.
Rustin, which tracks the eight-week breakneck race to get multiple civil rights organizations, like the N.A.A.C.P., to cooperate and get 100,000 peaceful protesters down to the National Mall hums along, at an agreeable tempo. Wolfe and screenwriters Julian Brece and Dustin Lance Black conjure the events in a crowd-pleasing manner. This is a film that doesn’t want for soliloquies.

Colman Domingo is demanding the spotlight for his next film role. The "Candyman" and "Euphoria" actor portrays queer civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in Netflix's upcoming biopic, "Rustin." Per the streamer, the movie will chronicle Rustin's rise as the "architect of 1963's momentous March on Washington," where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech. According to the movie's trailers, which arrived on Aug. 28 and Oct. 19, "Rustin" is also expected to spotlight some of the obstacles the titular figure faced during his lifetime, including police brutality and criticism over his sexuality.
Rustin, known as one of the greatest organizers in history, "challenged authority, never apologized for who he was, what he believed, or who he desired," per Netflix. And though he made history, the influential figure's accomplishments have seemingly been forgotten - until now.

Netflix released the teaser trailer and poster for Rustin on the 60th anniversary of the historic March on Washington. Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead) stars as gay civil rights leader Bayard Rustin, the man who organized the march and whose place in history has been largely overlooked since the 1963 march.
“We are committed to the cause of altering the trajectory of this country towards freedom. They either believe in freedom and justice for all – or they do not,” states Domingo as Rustin in the first teaser for the awards-season release.
Joining SAG award nominee Colman Domingo (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) are Emmy winner Chris Rock as Roy Wilkins, Emmy winner Glynn Turman as A. Philip Randolph, Aml Ameen as Martin Luther King Jr., Gus Halper, Emmy nominee Cch Pounder, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Johnny Ramey, Michael Potts, and Lilli Kay. For Black activists, marching toward freedom in the 1960s meant navigating roadblocks and visceral hatred in order to stand for what was right. In the official teaser trailer for Netflix’s Rustin, Colman Domingo embarks on this journey through the lens of March on Washington architect Bayard Rustin. For the civil rights activist and organizer, his identity as a Black, gay man was never something to be explained away or apologized for. In fact, it only fueled his power.

My fellow Colman Domingo fans, we have much to look forward to. After lending his voice to computer-generated characters in both "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" and "Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken" earlier this year, the celebrated "If Beale Street Could Talk" and "Euphoria" star will be back in live-action a big way over the coming months, starting with his performance in the biopic "Rustin."
If you don't know the name Bayard Rustin, well, you're not alone. A key figure in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, Rustin was essentially the architect of the 1963 March on Washington in which Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech. He's typically been overlooked (if not completely erased) in public school curriculums due to the fact that he was gay, which also led to him advising people like King from behind closed doors rather than serving openly as one of the faces of the movement itself.

Bringing two projects to Toronto International Film Festival (and likely would’ve been a trio if a certain film didn’t get delayed), Colman Domingo is poised for a major fall. Before The Color Purple arrives at the end of the year, he’ll also be seen in George C. Wolfe’s Rustin and Greg Kwedar’s Sing Sing, both headed to the Canadian Festival. As scripted by Julian Breece and Dustin Lance Black, the first trailer has now arrived for his Bayard Rustin biopic ahead of a theatrical and Netflix release this November.
Here’s the synopsis: “The architect of 1963’s momentous March on Washington, Bayard Rustin was one of the greatest activists and organizers the world has ever known. He challenged authority, never apologized for who he was, what he believed, or who he desired. And he did not back down. He made history, and in turn, he was forgotten.

The first trailer for Rustin, Netflix’s upcoming film about the life and work of Bayard Rustin, the openly gay Black civil rights leader and architect of 1963’s March on Washington, promises to put an end to the history of erasure around the visionary’s legacy.
Released Monday, on the official 60th anniversary of the historic freedom march, the first look captures the passionate, profound and often tumultuous journey of one of the country’s most significant civil rights activists, socialists, pacifists, labor unionists and gay rights advocates. Directed by DGA award and five-time Tony winner George C. Wolfe, Domingo — in his first leading feature film role — embodies the radical voice and fixture of the 20th-century fight for equality and justice in American democracy.

Beginning an X-Men movie by quoting Abraham Lincoln can sound like a loaded choice. It can also be sublime, as was the case in X2, which 20 years ago opened on a solemn recitation of Lincoln’s closing remarks during his first inaugural address in 1861: “We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection.”
So starts one of the best sequences in any superhero movie: Nightcrawler’s less-than-sanguine visit to what is almost assuredly the George W. Bush White House.
X2 landed like a thunderbolt after the first X-Men of 2000 was praised for many things by fans, but not its action sequences. Hampered by a sparse budget of $75 million and a timetable that was cut six months short by studio 20th Century Fox, X-Men relied on the strength of its casting—particularly Hugh Jackman as Wolverine,...

When FBI agent Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) sits down with convicted serial killer Edmund Kemper (Cameron Britton) in the Netflix series Mindhunter, he’s both terrified and fascinated. Kemper, serving multiple life sentences for a spate of brutal kidnappings and murders - including his own mother - could offer a valuable insight into a criminal mindset that was barely understood in the late 1970s. Ford hopes to use a series of interviews with Kemper, and convicts like him, to build up a psychological profile which could be used to help track down other serial murderers; it soon becomes apparent, however, that Ford’s fascination with Kemper runs beyond the strictly professional.

"The Americans" just concluded its third season. I have an interview with producers Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, and my review of the finale is coming up just as soon as I put your toys back where I found them... "They're Russians!" -Paige "March 8, 1983" demonstrated all the ways in which "The Americans" has grown into an emotional powerhouse that's the best drama on television at the moment. But the things that weren't in it — one thing in particular — illustrated some of the misgivings I had about this year. That the show can be as great as it is in spite of that speaks to what an extraordinary job Fields, Weisberg and everyone else have done with the...

The Old Friends (at the Signature Center through October 6)From beyond the grave, crafty Horton Foote just keeps on evolving: The Old Friends, a companion to Foote’s 1944 Broadway debut, Only the Heart, was begun in the sixties and semi-staged in the eighties. Now doughty Foote soldier Michael Wilson (The Orphan’s Home Cycle, The Trip to Bountiful) has brought the final version to fruition in a sizzling, spitting skillet of a production, where nary a performance is short of deep-fried perfection and every backhanded compliment and drunken indiscretion lands like a javelin in someone’s back. This is the rare show in which Betty Buckley — as vulgar, manipulative, perma-toxicated farming empress Gertrude Ratliff — delivers a perfect monster of a performance, and there’s still room for eight more. Cotter Smith is superbly deployed as Howard Ratliff, brother of Gertrude’s late husband and manager of her estate, kept as...

When it comes to protecting people he cares about, Reese (James Caviezel) is a force of nature. The trail to finding Mr. Finch (Michael Emerson) has led to south Texas, and in case you were wondering, yes. The Machine’s far-reaching vision extends all over the Us, it seems. Creeped out, yet? But even though the Machine seems to “know” where it’s master is, it still have a job for Reese to do, and that is helping others. Even if the help comes too late. Root (Amy Acker) almost comes off sympathetic in this episode. She has a mission to set the Machine free from those who would use it for evil, and she’s actually making some sense when she tries to convince Finch. Well, except for stringing her new prisoner, Denton Weeks (Cotter Smith) up in an “enhances interrogation technique”… which disgusts her audience a bit. Reese,...

Cotter Smith has been challenged before. With more than a dozen Off-Broadway plays under his belt and major television and film experience, the multi-talented actor definitely knows how to captivate an audience. However, when "Cock" starts performances on Tuesday, he'll have to do it empty-handed.“The concept is no props and no set,” says Smith. “The actual image for the piece is an arena. It’s a small circular stage with the audience around us, similar to a cockfight.”The metaphor is apt. “Cock” showcases the verbal sparrings of an indecisive bisexual (Cory Michael Smith), his two lovers (Jason Butler Harner and Amanda Quid), and an intrusive father (Cotter Smith). Director James MacDonald, who also directed the 2009 West End performance, believes that minimalism demands an actor-specific approach.“In a play where there is nothing but four actors it really depends on who they are,” he says.“He’s such an intelligent and interesting person,...

Being afraid of what might be under my bed or inside my closet is a childhood fear that used to leave me frozen in terror. I assume it is part of growing up. I still remember like it was yesterday when one night in my room I cowered under my blankets because a pair of glowing red eyes were glaring back at me from the closet; the same kind that are attached to the monster in Cameron’s Closet. I guess it was fate that art would somehow imitate my life, and that I would get to interview Armand Mastroianni, the director of the film.
