As comedy has shifted the bounds of acceptable content, some shows continue to push the line between problematic and funny. Unlike some comedians insist, good comedy series like It’s Always Sunny in Philadephia push the boundary of what is allowed on television. Hapless, a new series streaming on Peacock, looks to bring the same energy from a crew of British comedians. It approaches its comedy with traditional sitcom approaches, but unlike many shows, it lets the humor spiral out of control. Most importantly, it gives its stars the material to milk the most laughs possible out of the punchlines. The show is very funny, even if it occasionally feels too similar to the Curb Your Enthusiasm or The League.
Hapless Plot
Hapless follows Paul Green (Tim Downie), a British journalist completing stories for The Jewish Enquirer. As Paul investigates various stories, he comes into contact with different aspects of Jewish and secular British culture.

The ultimate cringe comedy has ended as Curb Your Enthusiasm took its final bow.
After 15 seasons of watching Larry David’s fictional self make a complete and utter ass of himself again and again, it might seem like the end is near for the medium.
Rest assured, this brand of humor will not disappear quickly, and streaming on Peacock today is Hapless, a British comedy from creator Gary Sinyor about -- to harken back to David’s Seinfeld -- nothing.
First of all, you should probably know that I am not generally a sitcom gal. My comedy needs to be brusque and sarcastic, borderline rude, but not raunchy.
As you can imagine, cringe comedies make my heart sing.
These comedies often feature somewhat neurotic people who have failed to fully mature as they live life. As a single adult without children, this speaks to me. How do you mature without kids?...

At the end of each chapter of Hapless, Paul (Tim Downie) cracks open his laptop to scan the headlines of The Jewish Enquirer. Almost invariably, whatever piddling story he’s spent the past episode chasing has been outflanked by the likes of “Cloudy weather in Tel Aviv” (mind you, the show takes place in London) and buried among links to “exclusives” like “Twin brothers share bar mitzvah” and “Jewish Film Festival opens with Jewish-themed film.”
Even by the standards of “the fourth-largest Jewish publication in the U.K.,” these are nothing articles. But they’re right in line with the spirit of the series, an amusingly sour half-hour comedy about a petty man getting worked up over petty things, with petty results. Think of it as a British Curb Your Enthusiasm, if Larry David had been a total nobody forced to look for the “jangle” (Jewish angle) in every remotely...

British Airways (BA) has U-turned on its decision to remove a sitcom about the British Jewish community from its inflight entertainment package in the wake of the Israel-Hamas War.
Hapless, which revolves around an obsessive and gaffe-prone journalist for a fictional Jewish newspaper and was recently acquired by Peacock in the U.S., was initially due to screen on BA from late this year but after a content review it was removed.
After coming to the attention of director Gary Sinyor and others, BA has U-turned, stating that the series will run from early next year following the airline’s latest three-monthly content review.
“We understand that the decision to review the content has caused upset and hurt to the Jewish community, and we’re sorry – that was never our intention,” said a spokesperson for BA. “We’re proud to offer a wide range of entertainment options for our customers...

The six-part series was created, written, and produced by Gary Sinyor and stars Outlander and Paddington actor Tim Downie as Paul Green, a journalist on the UK’s fourth most successful Jewish newspaper.
The series first launched on Amazon last year under the title The Jewish Enquirer, but with industry production slowing down during the coronavirus pandemic, Sinyor saw an opportunity to pitch the show to a broadcaster. It goes live on My5 in March

Green has run Efd with brother Nigel since they founded the company with their father Michael – himself an industry vet – in the late 1970s. They distributed movies from Teen Wolf to The Artist and were well known for their lucrative deals with New Line and The Weinstein Company.

MaryAnn’s quick take… A portrait of grief and guilt that’s only mildly engaging, until it morphs into a wannabe psychological thriller and turns limp, laughable, and just plain icky. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Ah, so much sleek wealth! Ah, so little common sense! Gemma (Jasmine Hyde) and Will (Richard Flood) are a well-off English couple mourning the death of their small son in a terrible accident in their home. Initially, writer-director Gary Sinyor manages to limn a mildly affecting portrait of their guilt and grief: Gemma starts having panic attacks that blur her vision; Will begins to hear their son’s voice in his bedroom. Overall, though, they’re coping as well as can be expected, which isn’t terribly engaging dramatically, until mysterious Paul (Simon Cotton) enters their lives and disrupts their relationship entirely,...

Gary Sinyor's request to Bob Iger
Concern over Star Wars: The Last Jedi monopolising cinema screens next month has come to a head with Gary Sinyor, director of British thriller The Unseen, taking out an advert in the Guardian to ask Disney CEO Bob Iger to free up a screen in London for his film.
"The new Star Wars film is going to be not just in every cinema complex but also nearly every screen and for nearly every performance... One small screen in Central London would have a negligible effect on them but means a huge amount to an independent British feature film," Sinyor said.
Having a choice about what to see is also likely to matter to the public, with 22% of UK residents visiting cinemas more often over the Christmas period that at any other time of year.

'The Doll' with Ossi Oswalda and Hermann Thimig: Early Ernst Lubitsch satirical fantasy starring 'the German Mary Pickford' has similar premise to that of the 1925 Buster Keaton comedy 'Seven Chances.' 'The Doll': San Francisco Silent Film Festival presented fast-paced Ernst Lubitsch comedy starring the German Mary Pickford – Ossi Oswalda Directed by Ernst Lubitsch (So This Is Paris, The Wedding March), the 2017 San Francisco Silent Film Festival presentation The Doll / Die Puppe (1919) has one of the most amusing mise-en-scènes ever recorded. The set is created by cut-out figures that gradually come to life; then even more cleverly, they commence the fast-paced action. It all begins when a shy, confirmed bachelor, Lancelot (Hermann Thimig), is ordered by his rich uncle (Max Kronert), the Baron von Chanterelle, to marry for a large sum of money. As to be expected, mayhem ensues. Lancelot is forced to flee from the hordes of eligible maidens, eventually...

They don't make funny movies any more, right? Wrong. If you're looking for a laugh, then here are some you may have missed...
For this list, blame The Hangover Part III. It was whilst walking out of that film that I got into a chat with someone, who was bemoaning the lack of genuinely funny movie comedies. Certainly, big budget Hollywood comedies have no end of problems right now - with the occasional exception - but I couldn't help thinking of the many neglected gems that had gone through my DVD player over the past decade or so.
As such, I started to put this list together. It's inevitably subjective, as one person's comedy is another person's snore fest. But I've tried to dig out a mix of comedies from the past three decades that have either flown under the radar completely, or...

A dramatic three-hander with a cast that belies its low-budget, Retreat stars Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton as Martin and Kate, a married couple whose relationship is on the rocks. In order to get their heads round a recent trauma, they head to a remote island in a bid to rekindle a lost spark of intimacy, staying in an isolated cottage a good boat journey from the mainland. They don’t have a particularly good time of it though, with the electricity generator failing and the Cb radio (their only contact with the mainland) malfunctioning soon after they arrive, and this bad time is made considerably worse when Jamie Bell turns up as Jack: a bloodied and mysterious soldier with a gun and Earth-shattering news about a global pandemic that’s killing everyone.

This first trailer for Carl Tibbetts' Retreat firmly sets the film in the genre of psychological thriller, as tales of infection only occur off screen. Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later), Thandie Newton (Vanishing on 7th Street) and Jamie Bell (The Eagle) star, with Murphy unable to escape global pandemics, real or imagined. Murphy starred, of course, in 28 Days Later and here he plays Martin, a man trying to fix his marriage, as another man tries to unravel it with tales of infection. Have a look at the suspenseful trailer below, and prepare for a theatrical release shortly, as Sony Pictures has picked up this title for distribution (Quiet Earth).
The synopsis for the Retreat here:
"A husband and wife rent a remote island cottage while trying to repair their marriage. One day they find a biohazard-suited soldier washed up on the beach, who warns them that everybody on the mainland...

The apocalypse continues and this time it is an "airborne virus" that is bringing death (Quiet). This is part of the premise for first time director Carl Tibbett's Retreat. This film is currently in production in Wales (Quiet) and at the American Film Market. A showing date has not been announced for the film at the Afm, but here is the first poster.
The poster art shows actors Thandie Newton, Cillian Murphy and Jamie Bell above a lonely, isolated shack. This refuge is the only protection for characters Kate, Martin and a mysterious soldier, as a deadly virus reduces the mainland population to nothing.
A partial synopsis for the Retreat is here:

Jamie Bell has been officially cast in a upcoming British thriller called The Retreat. He will be joining Cillian Murphy (Inception) and Thandie Newton in the film, which follows a married couple who rent a cottage on a remote island to fix their marriage. Their plans are cut short when a soldier wearing a biohazard suit washes up on the beach claiming that everyone on the mainland has been killed by a virus.
Carl Tibbets is making his directorial debut with a script he wrote. Filming is scheduled to start in Wales next month.
Bell got his start as an actor in a great little film called Billy Elliott. He was most recently one of the contenders for the role of Peter Parker in the new 3D Spider-Man reboot. He also has the title role in the Steven Spielberg/Peter Jackson collaboration The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.
