John McLaughlin (Black Swan) is writing, based on an idea from author David Baldacci.
Exec producers are AGC’s Stuart Ford and Lourdes Diaz, Clarkson, McLaughlin, Baldacci, director Ruba Nadda, Marc Shmuger, Lionsgate’s Agapy Kapouranis and Elliott Brannon and Night Train’s Kloiber.

EuropaCorp has made a distribution deal with Pathé Films in France that will see the latter company release three films from Luc Besson’s company over a three-year period. The news Friday comes as reports surfaced earlier this week that EuropaCorp was shuttering its domestic distribution business amid continued financial strain.
The Pathé deal begins with Guillaume Canet’s Nous finirons ensemble, a sequel to his 2010 pic Little White Lies that stars François Cluzet, Marion Cotillard and Gilles Lellouche. The other film noted in today’s announcement is Anna, the EuropaCorp-Lionsgate co-production written and directed by Besson and starring Helen Mirren, Sasha Luss, Luke Evans and Cillian Murphy. That pic is still undated in the U.S.
The two films had been pushed back on the release calendar by EuropaCorp, which has struggled since Besson’s $200 million sci-fi feature Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets failed to score at the box office,...

Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp saw a spike in Paris trading Thursday morning after reporting reduced losses in its consolidated results for the year ended March 31, 2018. The producer and distributor saw a net loss of 82.5M euros ($95.4M) for the year, down from the record 119.9M euros ($136M) loss it suffered in the comparable 2016/2017 period.
The company also increased cash flow to 105M euros. Although it was a costly gamble that severely under-performed, Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets was largely responsible for the uptick, as were the beginnings of a restructure as Europa shifts focus to action and sci-fi properties that have historically made up its core.
Last year at this time, Europa was getting ready to release Valerian, a $200M opus, having screened portions of it at the CineEurope exhibition conference in mid-June (execs did not attend this year). The film then went on to gross about $226M worldwide.

Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp has played down a new report in French financial paper Les Echos that Netflix is in pole position to invest in the company.

Lionsgate and EuropaCorp have closed a deal for Luc Besson’s next action film, Anna. Variety reports that the movie begins production this November and will be released under Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment label.
Helen Mirren and Luke Evans star, they are joined by Cillian Murphy, and newcomer Sasha Luss, as Anna. There aren't really any details on the story, but if you're familiar with Besson's work, you'll know what to expect.
Anna will be the first film to be produced under EuropaCorp since Valerian. Last month EuropaCorp’s CEO Marc Shmuger laid out the company's new focus on making action thrillers and science-fiction films, along the same lines of Taken, Lucy, The Professional and The Fifth Element.
Right now EuropaCorp is also developing a sequel to Scarlett Johansson's sci-fi action film Lucy whose script has already been written by Besson.

Universal’s “Scarface” remake just got a little help from their friends, Joel and Ethan Coen. According to Deadline, the Coen Brothers helped polish the script for the studio.
Additionally, the gangster film’s release date was also announced: August 10, 2018.
Set to be a modern story about the rise and fall of a Latino gangster, previous reports stated that Diego Luna was attached to star. Though nothing has been confirmed.

Variety is reporting tonight that Rogue One‘s Diego Luna will star in the upcoming Scarface remake, which previously had Antoine Fuqua attached to direct. We say ‘previously’ because we’re now hearing that the filmmaker has departed the project. From what we understand, Sony and Denzel Washington are eager to get The Equalizer 2 off the ground and unfortunately, Fuqua won’t have time for Universal’s film anymore, which is certainly a shame.
This shouldn’t cause too much trouble, though, as the studio is already looking for a replacement and is expected to find one quickly, meaning that production won’t be delayed. Furthermore, Terence Winter’s script will still remain in tact, and Marc Shmuger, Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark are all on board in producing roles.
We’ve heard in the past that this new Scarface will be a reimagining of both the 1932 and 1983 versions of the story.

Gibney now has two films that explore the myriad ways that the internet can wreak havoc, with 2013’s “We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks” and the Oscar-shortlisted “Zero Days,” which stemmed from the U.S. and Israeli Stuxnet operation that destroyed 1000 nuclear centrifuges. Gibney dug deeper and found out how scary the world of cyberwarfare could be. And as the election took its twisty turns, revealing the Russia hacks, more of us caught up with a new reality that had only been imagined in science-fiction. The Matrix is here.

Awards season keeps ticking right along, but tonight’s Cinema Eye Honors promised at least a tiny respite from narrative-based filmmaking, as the New York City-set ceremony is all about honoring the best in the year’s documentary filmmaking.
Big winners included Kirsten Johnson’s “Cameraperson,” which picked up Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Feature Filmmaking, along with editing and cinematography wins. Right behind it was Ezra Edelman’s “O.J.: Made in America,” which earned Edelman a directing win, along with a production win for Edelman and Caroline Waterlow. Best TV offering went to “Making a Murderer.”
Nominations were lead by Raoul Peck’s “I Am Not Your Negro” and “O.J.: Made in America,” which each pulled in five nominations apiece, though Johnson’s “Cameraperson” and Gianfranco Rosi’s “Fire at Sea” aren’t far behind, with four nominations each. Both Peck and Rosi’s features ultimately walked away without an award.

Even with the lukewarm box office of Robocop, the Hollywood remake machine shows no signs of slowing down. Having butchered Paul Verhoeven’s original with a decidedly tepid update, executives have now turned their attention to another iconic 1980s film: Scarface. News surfaced three weeks ago that Universal Pictures have hired Chilean director Pablo Larraín (No) to direct an updated version with a Mexican lead, working from a script from Donnie Brasco writer Paul Attanasio.
At first glance, you might not have grounds to be worried. The line-up of talent involved is pretty good, particularly if you add in Marc Shmuger, the award-winning producer of Wikileaks documentary We Still Secrets. Making Tony a Mexican is an interesting idea, particularly if the film sticks to the news article’s claim that he will be bicultural and bilingual. Star Wars Last week, rumors began circulating that J.J. Abrams might be revisiting some of the classic environments of the original Star Wars trilogy in Star Wars: Episode VII, namely the ice planet Hoth and the desert planet Tatooine. Now, THR is adding some weight to at least half of that rumor by reporting that a "source" inside the production has revealed that Abrams is building a "re-creation of Tatooine." Abrams is a self-avowed devotee of the original movies and the entire Skywalker storyline revolves around the desert planet so this seems like one slam-dunk of a rumor.
Far less certain is the recent rumor that a virtual unknown has landed a major role in the new trilogy. Again, THR is out in front of this rumor, placing Oxford-educated actress Maisie Richardson-Sellers "in line to nab" a key role, possibly as the Jedi daughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi. So far, the...
