Ben Rivers' film is about a man who lives in a remote Scottish house. We follow his daily life – but don't know why. Welcome to 'slow cinema'
This could be the least glamorous wrap party in the history of cinema. It is 2am, and we're sitting around a dying fire, sipping tea and whisky in the middle of a pine forest in Aberdeenshire, in the junk-strewn courtyard of an old farmhouse. The house belongs to Jake Williams, wiry, bright-eyed and with an impressive white beard. He's the movie's star; or, rather, he's the only person in it. Opposite him sit the crew: director Ben Rivers and sound recordist Chu-li Shewring. That's it. They have just finished shooting the final scene of Rivers' first feature: a close-up of Williams staring into the fire as it slowly dies. They've shot it twice tonight, adding bits of car tyre (it gives off a nice,...

Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll simply can't get away from each other in The 39 Steps.
The 1935 film The 39 Steps remains one of filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock’s (Psycho) great thrillers and a mystery filled with the kind of moments that truly defined Hitchcock as “The Master of Suspense.”
The classic movie follows Canadian traveler Richard Hannay (Robert Donat, The Count of Monte Cristo), who stumbles into a spy-filled conspiracy that thrusts him into a hectic chase across the Scottish moors — a chase in which he is both the pursuer and the pursued — as well as into an expected romance with the cool Pamela (Madeleine Carroll, Cafe Society).
Adapted from the 1915 novel by John Buchan, The 39 Steps is one of Hitchcock’s classic wrong-man thrillers, anticipating such later Hitchcock movies as North by Northwest (1959) and, of course, The Wrong Man (1956).

Meteorite Men: Geoff Notkin Previews Season Three Premiere
Fans of smart, adventurous, documentary-style reality shows will be happy to learn that on Monday, November 28th, the Meteorite Men return to TV with their third season premiere on the Science Channel. I became a fan based on my affinity for all space-related topics and because they had their 'Meteorite Bike' built on another of my favorite reality shows, American Chopper. The Meteorite Men are Geoff Notkin and Steve Arnold, two 'rock stars' in the space-rock hunting world.
Geoff Notkin is an accomplished science writer and photographer, entrepreneur, musician (who'll be performing with rock band Feed on December 17th for a charity concert in Tucson), as well as meteorite hunter and show host. Born in NYC, Geoff spent his formative years with his parents in England. As a young child interested in science, a visit to London's Geological Museum awoke a...

Manic Street Preachers have said that they would still love to meet up with Morrissey. The band referenced the singer and his Smiths-era songwriting partner Johnny Marr in their track '1985' from the 2004 album Lifeblood. Speaking to BBC Radio 2, bassist Nicky Wire and frontman James Dean Bradfield revealed that they recently met three of their favourite '80s artists after speaking to Mike Scott of The Waterboys, Jim (more)...

"New Orleans still is waiting for that first major Katrina movie," observed Mike Scott at the Times-Picayune last week. "Surely, it's not still too soon to tell them. After all, Oliver Stone's 'World Trade Center' went into production in October 2005 -- four years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. It landed in theaters in August 2006, just before the fifth anniversary. Paul Greengrass' 'United 93' arrived even earlier, in April 2006. So where are the Katrina movies?"
It's an intriguing question, even if I wouldn't want to wish a Katrina equivalent of Stone's film on anyone. I don't think the answer is that it's too soon -- more that Katrina seems simply too large for the confines of a normal movie, too complicated and bitter a mixture of natural disaster and national failure swirling around a city that has always proven challenging to capture with authenticity on screen. It...

New Orleans Times-Picayune film critic Mike Scott asked an excellent question over the weekend: Where are all the movies about Hurricane Katrina? From Nola.com: [F]ive years after the storm dumped a tragedy on New Orleans, and nine months after The Weinstein Co. dumped "Hurricane Season" [which would have been the first Katrina-centered Hollywood film] unceremoniously as a direct-to-dvd release -- New Orleans still is waiting for that first major Katrina movie. There have been a number of narrative films that have referenced the storm -- movies such as "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans." But the storm in those films and others like them is only a peripheral element, tacked onto an existing script as an afterthought. Why is a Katrina film necessary? Scott continues:...

In the classic-horror world that Forry Ackerman left behind for us, some consider the Triple Crown of fan events to be: Monster Bash, Comic-Con and WonderFest.
The Bash is an easy, intimate gathering – like a down-home family picnic. Comic-Con is a juggernaut of bone crushing intensity – like the NY Stock Exchange of Cons. Ah, Wonderfest! - an oasis of camaraderie and something-for-everyone programming – the 2-day cruise ship of horror cons. For those of us happily cursed to be a part of the horror community, Wonderfest is The Mecca of classic monster-fan's cream of the crop.
Genre literati, artists, craftspeople and their admirers all gather to share secrets, ogle the latest creatures (in model form) and to catch up on general comings and goings. If you prefer dude-ish sports analogies, let’s just say WonderFest could be considered the Nascar(E) of Horror events! The Kentucky Dirge(by)! The Spooker Bowl!

Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro made a whirlwind visit to Dublin last week to promote his newest film "Wolfman," which opens here next month. Del Toro sat with Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy for a chat, and revealed that he’s a big fan of Irish music and writing. (No big surprise there, right!) The Puerto Rican actor ran through a list of his favorite musicians – Van Morrison, U2 and Mike Scott of the Waterboys – and writers, including George Bernard Shaw, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett . . . and a name that you may not automatically assume is Irish. “One writer who really influenced me was Bram Stoker,” Del Toro said. “Dracula is a masterpiece.” That it is. And its author, Stoker, was born and raised in Dublin. Benicio knows his stuff!...
