The then 15-year-old teenager, who had been targeted for speaking out on behalf of girls’ education in her region of Swat Valley in Pakistan, was shot in the head, sparking international media outrage. An educational activist in Pakistan, Yousafzai has since emerged as a leading...

After making his narrative feature directorial debut at Sundance three years ago with the brilliant Another Earth, Mike Cahill has returned to Park City for his sophomore follow-up, I Origins.
The film has opened to positive early buzz amongst festivalgoers, and it’s now officially amongst the early acquisitions. Fox Searchlight has announced that it has acquired worldwide rights to the existential drama, with Deadline hearing that the deal impressively closed around the $3m. mark.
Ian Gray, a PhD student studying molecular biology with a specialty in eye evolution, leaves his lab to go to a party and has an intense, but fleeting, encounter with a mysterious, masked model who escapes into the night. With only a picture of her stunning and iconic eyes, he tracks her down, and they fall in love. Their fundamentally different beliefs about life only serve to intensify their connection, and they vow to spend forever together.

Chicago – After snagging the Best Actor prize at the 68th Venice Film Festival, Michael Fassbender’s acclaimed performance in Steve McQueen’s drama, “Shame,” will be able to premiere on American screens in the near future. On Sept. 9, Fox Searchlight Pictures presidents Nancy Utley and Stephen Gilula announced that their studio had acquired U.S. rights to the film, while HanWay Films will handle international sales.
“Shame” marks the second intimate collaboration between McQueen and Fassbender, who each earned raves for 2008’s “Hunger,” a galvanizing look at the last days of Irish republican hunger striker Bobby Sands. Whereas “Hunger” required Fassbender to drop a great deal of pounds, “Shame” entailed an entirely different but equally extreme level of physical commitment from the actor.
He plays a Brandon, a New Yorker whose sexual addiction causes him to live an isolated existence until a visit from his sister (Carey Mulligan) reawakens demons from his past.

In what might be my favorite news of the entire week, Deadline tells us that Fox Searchlight has picked up Steve McQueen‘s Shame for American distribution. Just hearing that it’s been acquired is good enough, but it means more in this case — after all, we were all questioning just a few days ago who would take on a film that has such graphic content.
Said content includes full-frontal nudity from Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan, in addition to uncompromising sex scenes featuring the former. McQueen won’t remove a single frame from his film; he should — by no means whatsoever — be required to do so, but this insistence was causing a problem when it came to real distribution in the U.S. No signs point to Searchlight cutting it, which means that the release of it is going to be quite limited. Ironically enough, the bid came down...

One of the biggest critical hits at the Venice Film Festival was Shame, in which Hunger director Steve McQueen once again works with actor Michael Fassbender to tell a story of a man who doesn't quite have control over his sexual urges. I've edged away from full reviews, but reports peg it as both gruesome (for one scene) and quite sexually explcit, with full frontal displays from Fassbender and co-star Carey Mulligan. (THR [1] mentioned "male and female full-frontal nudity, graphic depictions of straight/gay/threeway sex, masturbation, urination and a gruesome [redacted to avoid spoilers].") Scanning reviews paints Shame as a venue for a very effective performance from Michael Fassbender, if nothing else. And as McQueen has refused to cut the film, it is also one which will go out as an Nc-17. So it has been the subject of debate for the past week -- who'll pick this one up? As it turns out,...

Fox Searchlight has picked up Steve McQueen's Nc-17 drama Shame. Deadline reports that this is one of the first deals made during this years Toronto Film Festival. Both Searchlight and The Weinstein Company were involved in bidding on this film that is said to be a powerful performance by Michael Fassbender, who plays "a New Yorker unable to manage his sex life when his wayward younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves in to his apartment, and his world spirals out of control."
This is great news for this controversial film, which "is unabashedly Nc-17, features graphic sex scenes and nudity, and McQueen has final cut and will not change a frame." The deal also will call for a late-year release and Best Actor campaign for Fassbender; Searchlight will already be waging a campaign in the same category for George Clooney in the Alexander Payne-directed The Descendants.

Well I’ll be damned; it looks like we finally have something solid to stand on when it comes to Terrence Malick’s upcoming film, the much talked about, massively hyped, The Tree Of Life.
And it’s bittersweet.
According to a press release issued on Thursday, Malick (The Thin Red Line, Days Of Heaven) has found a distributor for his film, in the form of Fox Searchlight, who will be releasing the film in 2011. We also now know a bit of what the film actually is about. The film “is an impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950’s chronicling the journey of the eldest son, Jack (Sean Penn), through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years – try to reconcile the complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of...

Fox Searchlight owned the stage at the Kodak Theatre on Sunday, winning eight Oscars, more than any other studio, mini-major or specialty division. It culminated a remarkable six months whose outcome would have been impossible to predict at the start of this unpredictable awards season.
With few acquisitions or productions on its 2008 slate, the Peter Rice-run company didn't look as if it was in a position to repeat its Academy Awards feats of the past two years. In successive years, it had won best original screenplay and landed best picture nominations for "Little Miss Sunshine" (in 2006) and last year's "Juno."
Searchlight's fall release schedule had only the ensemble Southern drama "The Secret Life of Bees," a respectable commercial proposition that nevertheless was unlikely to score much gold.
But things turned around just before Labor Day.
First, Searchlight sealed a deal to reunite with Danny Boyle and pick up the Warner Bros.

Park City -- When it comes to hot Sundance property "An Education," someone may be giving someone else a lesson.
The only question is: Who's the teacher, and who's the student?
In the festival's first negotiation drama, an offer from Fox Searchlight for the Lone Scherfig coming-of-age dramedy met with a notably higher counteroffer from sellers CAA and Endeavor.
The Peter Rice specialty division is said to have made an offer in the $1 million range for the British period pic shortly after the movie played like gangbusters at its Sunday afternoon Park City premiere.
But filmmaker co-reps CAA and Endeavor, believing they had a bigger commercial play on their hands, turned down the offer and countered with an amount in the high-seven figures, with some pegging the number as high as $10 million.
The exchange scotches for the moment hope for a sale to Searchlight of the Nick Hornby...

PARK CITY -- Four million appeared to be the magic number at the Sundance Film Festival as acquisitions heated up Monday.
Three films sold at or near that price: Fox Searchlight took worldwide rights to the late actress-writer-director Adrienne Shelly's "Waitress" for slightly less than $4 million and George Ratliff's psychological thriller "Joshua" for $3.7 million, while Warner Independent Pictures put down $4 million for a collection of rights to Cherie Nowlan's Australian romance "Clubland".
"No distributor wants to overlook a potential success like 'Little Miss Sunshine' or 'Half Nelson, ' " said William Morris Independent co-head Rena Ronson, who sold "Grace Is Gone" to the Weinstein Co. on Sunday. "They're finding films that either fulfill an economic model that makes sense and/or can garner some kind of award."
Searchlight, which is on an acquisition binge, closed the deal on "Waitress" after the film screened for its second time Monday morning. It was the third and final feature from the filmmaker, who was killed in her New York apartment in early November.
"Waitress" stars Keri Russell in the title role of a poor Southern woman trapped in a bad marriage who finds true love when a new gynecologist comes to town. It was produced by Michael Roiff and executive produced by Todd King, Jeff Rose, Danielle Renfrew and Robert Bauer. Searchlight plans a 2007 release.
The deal was brokered on Fox Searchlight's side by senior vp acquisitions Tony Safford and executive vp business affairs Stephen Plum with the Film Sales Co. president Andrew Herwitz and Irwin Rappaport repping the filmmakers.
Searchlight went on to purchase virtually all worldwide rights minus Canada to Ratliff's "Joshua"; Ratliff helmed the 2001 documentary "Hell House". The film, which debuted Saturday night, tells the tale of a disturbed child who slowly turns the life of his family upside down. Starring Sam Rockwell, Vera Farmiga and young newcomer Jacob Kogan, "Joshua" triggered interest from multiple parties, but it was Searchlight that came through in the end. "George Ratliff and David Gilbert have created an unbelievably tense and frightful tale," said Searchlight president Rice, who plans a summer release.
Tony Safford, senior vp acquisitions and production at 20th Century Fox, and Stephen Plum, executive vp business affairs, negotiated on behalf of Searchlight, while UTA and attorney Andrew Hurwitz represented the filmmakers.

BEIJING -- 20th Century Fox will co-produce its first Chinese-language movie in China this June, the studio said Thursday, unveiling plans for a martial arts movie by Hong Kong director Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs).
The announcement adds Fox to the short list of Hollywood studios to navigate moviemaking in the strictly regulated mainland Chinese film industry. Co-productions here grant China's Film Bureau final cut in exchange for a theatrical release to China's growing moviegoing audience.
With co-production partners Beijing Ciwen Digital Oriental Film & TV Production Co. and its Hong Kong-based News Corp. subsidiary Fortune Star Entertainment, Fox said that the script for the tentatively titled Gold Bandits is being written by Hong Kong writer-director Gordon Chan (Beast Cop, Fist of Legend).
"Co-financing 'Gold Bandits' is part of the studio's country-by-country strategy to align ourselves with credible third party producers ... to create distribution partnerships that begin locally, spread regionally, and ultimately reach film audiences worldwide," Fox senior vp of film acquisitions Tony Safford said in a statement.
