If you've ever watched the red carpet at the Academy Awards there's a phrase you've probably heard over and over again, and for quite a few decades: "It's an honor just to be nominated."
And to be fair, it most certainly is. Although the Oscars were invented to bust unions, not reward artistic quality, at their best it's a gesture of support for a filmmaker from their peers. To be singled out by the other hard-working artisans in your branch as worthy of awards consideration as an actor, director, writer, cinematographer, sound designer et al is a great big feather in one's cap.
But it's a feather that can, and has been, plucked out. It's uncommon but the Academy Awards have vetoed quite a few nominations in the past — three times in the 2010s alone — in situations that stirred up controversy or, in some of the more technical or niche categories,...

The Academy will not take action against the campaign that helped boost actress Andrea Riseborough to a Best Actress nomination for the little-seen film “To Leslie,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer said in an email released on Tuesday.
Kramer said in the email that the Academy “has determined the activity in question does not rise to the level that the film’s nomination should be rescinded.” He added, though, “we did discover social media and outreach campaigning tactics that caused concern. These tactics are being addressed with the responsible parties directly.”
Kramer’s email also conceded that the Academy needed to clarify its campaign rules, and said it would do so after this year’s Oscars. Typically, AMPAS releases new rules both for the Oscars and for campaigning in the late spring, after the Board of Governors meets to go over the past awards season.

Update: The Instagram post shared on the “To Leslie” account has been removed.
The movie awards industry is buzzing following the news that the Academy is “conducting a review of campaign procedures” after Andrea Riseborough received a surprise best actress Oscar nomination for the independent drama “To Leslie.”
The “grassroots” campaign enlisted numerous famous names to help spread the word about the small indie, but did that break any rules or just smartly play the awards game?
Celebrity influencers aside, an Instagram post on the “To Leslie” page may have violated the Academy’s rules and guidelines.
In a post dated two weeks ago, the official Instagram account for “To Leslie” quoted Richard Roeper’s blurb from his top 10 films of 2022 article from the Chicago Sun-Times, where he listed the movie at no. 5. The quote reads: “As much as I admired Blanchett’s work in ‘Tár,’ my favorite performance by...

Bradley Cooper is a triple threat at the Academy Awards, being nominated a total of nine times in the acting, producing and writing categories. However, he has yet to take home the golden statuette. His most recent bid was for producing the Best Picture nominee “Nightmare Alley,” which lost to “Coda” at the 2022 Oscars ceremony. At nine career losses, that means Cooper has quietly now surpassed legendary performers Glenn Close and Peter O’Toole, both of whom failed to win any of their eight bids (all for acting).
Cooper’s three Oscar nominations in the Best Actor race came for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012), “American Sniper” (2014) and “A Star Is Born” (2018), plus he earned one notice in Best Supporting Actor for “American Hustle” (2013). The multi-hyphenate was recognized four times for producing Best Picture contenders “American Sniper,” “A Star Is Born,” “Joker” (2019) and “Nightmare Alley” (2021). At the Academy Awards on Sunday night, Kevin O’Connell just broke the longest streak for Oscar nominations without a win. The 59-year-old New Yorker had been nominated 21 times in total, making 2017 a very good year for him.
Who else among Hollywood’s finest has had to weather a storm of nominations without a win? Well, even just keeping it to over 10 nominations, it’s a healthy list. Let’s take a look.
Greg P. Russell
O’Connell’s win must have been somewhat bittersweet for Russell, who’s directly behind the elder sound mixer in the category of most nominations without wins.

Michael Bay’s Benghazi story 13 Hours pulled down a surprise Oscar nomination for itself this year, with Greg P. Russell, Gary Summers, Jeffrey J. Haboush and Mac Ruth all being nominated for Best Sound Mixing on the John Krasinski-starring film.
Now, though, a controversy has cropped up around Russell’s nomination, with Deadline reporting that the Academy voted today to rescind the honor. Russell apparently called members of the Academy during the nomination process to make them aware of his work on the film, a violation of the Oscars’ strict rules against direct telephone campaigning. Despite the ruling, though, Summers, Habrous, and Ruth will all still be eligible for the award.
And while we know that the drama surrounding the Best Sound Mixing Oscar is probably of minimal interest to everybody outside a very select and well-mixed group of folk, it’s always interesting to get a look at...

The Academy has rescinded its Oscar nomination for Greg P. Russell, sound mixer on director Michael Bay’s “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi,” for a rules violation. AMPAS released a statement on Saturday — just one day before the ceremony — that Russell had violated a rule against lobbying other Academy members in phone calls during the nominations phase. The board of governors, on the recommendation of the Sound Branch’s executive committee, voted on Thursday to revoke his nomination as a result. “The decision was prompted by the discovery that Russell had called his fellow members of the Sound Branch.

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.

We're about one month away from the announcement of this year's Honorary Oscar recipients. They're usuallly announced at the end of August for a November Governor's Awards ceremony. This year's ceremony will be on November 12th. Last year rumors circled that it was Doris Day's turn but that didn't turn out to be accurate. For the past two years, The Film Experience has tried to make up for the dearth of movie site reporting about the Oscar Honorary careers (beyond the sharing of press releases / YouTube videos of their speeches) with mini-retrospectives so we're always hoping they'll choose well to give us wonderful careers to discuss right here.
Let's reprint a list of worthies we shared a year or so ago, with a few adjustments, in case any of the elites in the Academy are undecided about who to put forth or get behind for these coveted honors.

The Detroit Film Critics Society is pleased to announce the Best of 2015 winners in ten categories. The society was founded in spring 2007 and consists of a group of seventeen film critics who write or broadcast in the Detroit area as well as other major cities within a 150-mile radius of the city including Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, and Flint, Michigan and Toledo, Ohio.
Each critic submitted their top five picks in the following categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Ensemble, and Breakthrough, Best Screenplay, and Best Documentary. From these submissions, each entry was given a point value and the top five in each category have been placed on the final ballot. The final ballots were then given to each critic to rank in order. The results were once again tabulated and the winners were decided.

Kim's gone platinum for Paris Fashion Week! The reality star arrived to the City of Lights today looking, well, noticeably lighter in the locks. The change is pretty dramatic: Kim's once-raven locks are now an ultra-cool, ashy platinum blond. The star shared a pic of her beachy post-bleach look with followers on Instagram: It turns out that hairstylist Gregory Russell (of the celeb-fave Andy Lecompte Salon) is responsible for Kim's chic long bob (which she's wearing brushed back in Paris), while in-demand colorist Lori Goddard got her hair to the perfect shade of platinum in one shot. We repeat: One shot. "So I went platinum," Kim wrote alongside the snapshot. "I have the best team! Thank...

Last year, I wrote a pair of pieces looking at the folks in Hollywood who were due for their first Oscar nominations or the their first wins. At the most recent Academy Award ceremony, two of those names got moved off of the list, so I wanted to take a look back and see who’s still on those lists and what they might have coming for us this year. I’ll update the lists with some new people next month, but for now…let’s go look at if the Oscars gave us some long overdue citations. If you were paying attention, you definitely noticed two of them. As a quick refresher for you all, here are the ten names that I had down as overdue for their first nods from the Academy: 10. Channing Tatum 9. Joseph Gordon-Levitt 8. Kevin Smith 7. Jennifer Jason Leigh 6. Jeff Daniels 5. Hoyte Van Hoytema 4. Steve Carell...

Over the past three and a half months, we have previewed the races in all Oscar categories and spoken with many of the leading contenders. For the ninth year here at Tech Support, it's now time to put all of that aside and put forward final predictions. Which craftsmen and craftswomen will be cited by their peers on Thursday? Best Cinematography Emmanuel Lubezki looks in fantastic position to earn his second straight statuette for his very, very long takes on "Bidman." Robert Yeoman and Dick Pope have earned guild, Bfca and BAFTA nods for their gorgeous period work that blurred the line between camera work and the painted and crafted arts on "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Mr. Turner" respectively. The former will likely rack up a host of nods while this is a perfect chance to recognize Pope’s collaborations with Leigh. They’re in good shape. Roger Deakins missed a BAFTA nod,...

We're winding down the year-in-review game here at HitFix as 2014 draws to a close. For whatever reason I took a year off of the ballot/superlatives posts, but I'm back with those personal assessments of the best of the year, beginning today with my top picks across the Academy's 24 categories. Check back in tomorrow for a list of winners from this lot, as well as others in a slew of peripheral categories. And of course, feel free to let us know what your Oscar ballot would look like in the comments section below. (Oh, and naturally it goes without saying this post is living in a parallel reality where I'm not confined to a specific branch for nominations and reign supreme over all categories with selections for each.) We'll find out if the Academy agrees with any of this when the 87th annual Oscar nominations are announced on Jan. 15. *** Best...

Normally, by mid-November, we have a pretty good idea of many of the likely nominees in most of the crafts categories. But in this year's race for Best Sound Mixing, I see things as extremely open — there's not a single film that strikes me as assured of a spot and more than a dozen appear to have very good chances. That makes for an exciting race. This category awards the overall mix of dialogue, music, effects and "everything else" into a film's soundtrack. This is different than sound editing, which recognizes the creation and editing of artificial sound effects. Being a leading Best Picture contender can certainly help a film's chances in mixing (seen in "The Social Network," "The King's Speech" and "Moneyball" in recent years), as can being a war film, a musical or a respected (or even not-so-respected) blockbuster. There are also certain mixers who score very regularly indeed.

As one person put it to me, "It's nice to have a trade covering, you know, the trades, because we haven't really had that in some time." Indeed, it's fantastic to see our colleagues at Variety dig in and represent the industry as they are with the newly branded "Artisans" initiative, and it's a long, long time coming. It is and has been an underreported element of the business, but I've happily seen that slowly shift in the decade we've been diligently, sometimes obsessively, covering below-the-line here at In Contention. From the word go, we made these artists a priority around here. They have an insight into the process that is always preferable to the soundbyte-prone "stars" of the circuit, and as someone who has always come at this work from that perspective, those chats are typically the most fulfilling to me. As we've forged ahead, we've witnessed other outlets...

Sorry, braided ponytail, there's a new plaited hairstyle on the red carpet. Judy Greer rocked a deceptively simple updo at the premiere of FX's new series, Married, on July 14th. Well, ether this is an incredible coincidence or a best friend pact. This week BFFs Mandy Moore and Minka Kelly uploaded photos of their new haircuts on Instagram. Moore was first up, sharing a selfie on Wednesday of her asymmetrical bob and calling it a "bad-ass cut." Celebrity hairstylist Gregory Russell, whose clients also include Christina Hendricks, created Mandy's fresh crop. Then yesterday, just 24 hours later, Minka Kelly decided to get a big chop. While the actress didn't go as short as her pal Mandy, she did take off quite a few inches. "Sooo @Marktownsend1 and I had some fun with the scissors today," she captioned the silly-face snapshot. At the Independent Spirit Awards Saturday afternoon, John Cassavetes Award winner (and former In Contention contributor) Chad Hartigan told me something I didn't know: He wouldn't have made "This is Martin Bonner" if it weren't for Steve McQueen's "Hunger." He copped a few of the film's lines in his film, some of the camerawork, too. He was inspired, he said, by a filmmaker who could pull something that powerful off with such modest means, both financially and artistically. That, to me, is McQueen's legend. That, to me, is the kind of thing that will endure. These nickel-plated notions of "importance" that people throw around during the Oscar season, straining to associate some arbitrary level meaning to the thing, they can frankly diminish the very fine achievement on display. "I fear all the talk about the historical importance of '12 Years a Slave' almost completely obscures its extraordinary artistic merit,...

I am seeing The Host tonight and I don't know who Jeanne Wolf of Jeanne Wolf's Hollywood or Greg Russell of Wmyd are, but apparently, based on their quotes in the new trailer below this is gonna be one hell of a intensely passionate, startlingly original movie that is full of suspense and excitement. As for the story, here's the synopsis: When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan) will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about - Jared (Max Irons), Ian (Jake Abel), her brother Jamie (Chandler Canterbury) and her Uncle Jeb (William Hurt) , proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world. If you didn't tune in for the Academy Awards last night, here's a short breakdown of what you missed: William Shatner showed up from the future, Jennifer Lawrence tripped and fell, and Michelle Obama co-presented the award for Best Picture. It was kind of a weird night, but for the most part, the hardware was handed out to all of the expected parties. Argo won Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor and Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress. If there was a surprise, it was that Life of Pi walked away with the most awards (4) including Best Director for Ang Lee. Zero Dark Thirty got shut out of everything except for Best Sound Editing (in a rare tie with Skyfall). Quentin Tarantino was also a pleasant surprise for Best Original Screenplay. What did you think of this year's Oscars? What was the highlight of the night? How would you rate Seth McFarlane as host?...

Greg P. Russell, a veteran sound mixer and 16-time Oscar nominee, lost his 16th Best Sound Mixing award during the 85th annual Academy Awards on Sunday. Russell, 0-for-16 at the Oscars in his career, was nominated with Scott Millan and Stuart Wilson for mixing "Skyfall."
"Les Miserables" won Best Sound Mixing at the 2013 Oscars.
The Oscars hand out two separate awards for sound work on feature films: Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing. The Best Sound Mixing award "recognizes the finest or most euphonic sound mixing or recording, and is generally awarded to the production sound mixers and re-recording mixers of the winning film."
Russell had been nominated 15 times before the 2013 Oscars. His first nod came in 1990 for the film "Black Rain." Russell was also singled out for "The Rock," "Con Air," "The Mask of Zorro," "Armageddon," "The Patriot," "Pearl Harbor," "Spider-Man," "Spider-Man 2," "Memoirs of a Geisha," "Apocalypto,...
