The Office continues to upend my expectations by delivering yet another successful episode in “Work Bus”, an episode which elicited much laughter but really worked hard to pluck the audience’s heartstrings. The effort mostly paid off but suffered a bit because each of the two plots in the episode are founded on stories which have been pretty poorly defined throughout season eight.
The primary plot was quite well structured though as what started off as a troublesome inspection for building owner Dwight not only facilitated a very subdued reconciliation of sorts between Jim and Pam, but also brought Dwight to confront a much more disturbing prospect than updating his building’s safety violations – admitting his profound disappointment over not being the father of Angela’s baby and his fear of never having kids of his own; plus there were pranks.

Three past winners, three past nominees and five rookies contend for Best Adapted Screenplay. Alexander Payne won this award in 2004 with Jim Taylor for "Sideways." This year, he worked with Nat Faxon and Jim Rush to adapt Kaui Hart Hemmings's novel "The Descendants," about a man (George Clooney) forced to deal with the adultery of his dying wife while making a life-changing business decision. One of three Best Picture contenders in this race (along with "Moneyball" and "Hugo), this is the only one to also reap bids for directing (Payne) and acting (Clooney). Last weekend, the trio of scripters won both the USC Scripter prize and the WGA award. Two previous category champs -- Steve Zaillian ("Schinder's List," 1993) and Aaron Sorkin ("The Social Network," 2010) -- along with Stan Chevrin adapted "Moneyball" from Michael Lewis' non-fiction account of the the winning ways of ...

Terra Nova 1.10 "Within" Recap - Shakespearean Bordering on Greek
Terra Nova continues toward the end of its first season order with tonight’s tenth episode “Within,” and with it the Terra Nova mole is revealed while Lucas Taylor finishes his calculations to make the time portal go both ways, and Skye (Allison Miller) faces a difficult decision about what to do with her information as Taylor and Jim close in on her identity.
Taylor and Jim examine the portal terminus that brings people from 2149, oblivious to how the device actually works noting that prior to its existence the time fracture would spit people out in erratic locations. With the 11th pilgrimage due in mere days, Taylor orders Jim to step up his hunt for Terra Nova’s mole. Jim goes through some of the last names on his list, including the actual mole Skye, but the girl claims to have...

"Moneyball" claimed the first major screenplay prize of the year when it won over the New York Film Critics Circle Tuesday. Both of the scribes who adapted the bestseller by Michael Lewis are already Oscar champs -- Aaron Sorkin won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar last year for "The Social Network" while his co-writer Steve Zaillian claimed this award back in 1993 for "Schindler's List." Zaillian could also be nominated this year for his adaptation of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" adaptation. Other Oscar winners looking for bookends include: Eric Roth ("Forrest Gump," 1994) who could contend with the 9/11 drama "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close"; Alexander Payne ("Sideways," 2004) who adapted "The Descendants" with Nat Faxon and Jim Rush; and Christopher Hampton ("Dangerous Liaisons," 1988) who adapted his play "A Dangerous Meth...

The Descendants
Starring George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller
Directed by Alexander Payne
Rated R
Writer-director Alexander Payne treats us to a deeply moving story of a family that is forced to confront the very demons that led to it being so fractured. The Descendants stars George Clooney in this adaptation of a 2007 novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings. The trio of Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rush are credited with writing the screenplay and what a screenplay at that.
The Descendants opens with a woman, Elizabeth King (Patricia Hastie), appearing to be totally enthralled with life, her eyes aglow and smiling as sea spray indicates that she’s on some type of fast moving watercraft. The next time we see her it’s with a very different look on her face. Clooney plays the woman’s husband, Matt King, a workaholic lawyer and as we soon learn - absentee father and husband.
