Chances of a second season for Patricia Arquette's newest show have dried up. Apple TV+ has cancelled her High Desert series, according to the actress and executive producer. The show was created by Nancy Fichman, Katie Ford, and Jennifer Hoppe-House.
A single-camera dark comedy series, the High Desert TV show stars Arquette, Brad Garrett, Weruche Opia, Bernadette Peters, and Rupert Friend. Recurring players include Matt Dillon, Christine Taylor, Eric Petersen, Susan Park, Jeffrey Vincent Parise, Eden Brolin, Carmine Giovinazzo, and Carlo Rota. In the story, Peggy Newman (Arquette) is an on-again-off-again addict. She decides to make a new start after the death of her beloved mother (Peters), with whom she lived in the small desert town of Yucca Valley, California. "You're at the point of no return!" Apple TV+ has revealed the official trailer for a new comedy series titled High Desert, featuring episodes directed by comedy filmmaker Jay Roach. This will be streaming on Apple TV+ starting in May this summer. High Desert follows Peggy, an on-again-off-again addict who decides to make a new start after the death of her beloved mother, with whom she lived in the small desert town of Yucca Valley, California, and makes a life-changing decision to become a private investigator. Matt Dillon will play Denny, Peggy’s ex, an undeniably charming parolee, and a relentless operator. Patricia Arquette stars as Peggy, with Dillon, Rupert Friend, Weruche Opia, Brad Garrett, plus guest stars Bernadette Peters, Christine Taylor, Carmine Giovinazzo, and Carlo Rota. This mostly looks like Patty Arquette is having the time of her life in this role, hamming it up in this kooky small town misadventure.

All Rights Reserved Inspired by James Cameron’s hit action/comedy film of the same name, True Lies follows Harry Tasker (Steve Howey), a first-class international spy for U.S. intelligence agency Omega Sector, and his wife, Helen (Ginger Gonzaga), a language professor bored with her daily routine, who makes the shocking discovery that her seemingly ordinary husband is leading an extraordinary double life. With the secret out, Omega recruits Helen, who impresses everyone with her formidable skills (thanks to Tae Bo and yoga), and she joins Harry and his team of top-notch operatives, embarking on covert missions around the globe and an exhilarating life of danger and adventure – all while keeping their adventures a secret from their children. Naomi Grossman is one of the most popular “American Horror Story” guest stars ever, but she hasn’t been seen on the FX limited series since 2018. If Ryan Murphy called her up to ask her to star on the upcoming 11th season, would she be game? “Well of course!” Grossman recently told me exclusively. “What fool actor wouldn’t? I come when I’m called, you know? I would say yes. Where? When?”
Grossman’s fan-fave character Pepper is in the “AHS” record books for being the first character to appear in multiple seasons. The microcephalic woman with the caring heart first appeared in “Asylum” (Season 2) before returning in “Freak Show” (Season 4). The actress later popped up in “Apocalypse” (Season 8) as a new character named Samantha Crowe, who was a member of the Church of Satan along with Miriam Mead (Kathy Bates) and Anton Lavey (Carlo Rota). Canada-based actor Colm Feore, whose credits include Netflix’s “The Umbrella Academy,” “My Salinger Year,” “The Amazing Spiderman 2” and multiple Oscar winner “Chicago,” is to star in post-apocalyptic Western “Six Guns for Hire,” which has just started principal photography in Toronto, Canada. The film also stars Maurice Dean Wint, Oyin Oladejo, and Patrick Kwok-Choon.
“Six Guns for Hire,” the third in a trilogy, is written and directed by Matt Campagna. It follows a vicious group of strangers who gather to divvy up the spoils of a train robbery, while an ace detective pursues hot on their trail. As the bandits realize they may not be strangers after all, the detective unearths a deadly conspiracy at the heart of their crime.
The three stories in the trilogy series, all developed and directed by Campagna, exist within the same post-apocalyptic world, without being traditional sequels or prequels to each other.

A weekend getaway goes sour even before the corpses start accruing in “Trespassers,” a good-looking indie thriller that’s diverting, but could have used another script draft or two. Depicting two quarrelsome if hard-bodied couples who find themselves in deep peril at a rented desert home, Orson Oblowitz’s film has a leisurely enough buildup that room should have been made for more fully developed characters. Fine-tuning the pileup of eventual violent crises wouldn’t have hurt, either. The result falls short of being especially credible, let alone memorable. Still, this is a polished genre exercise that provides a decent night’s home entertainment. IFC Midnight is opening it July 12 on screens in New York and Los Angeles, simultaneous with its launch on demand.

The film opens on an affluent white couple living close enough to the Mexican border for another character to later say, “You can’t open the door to strangers in today’s society.” They’re awoken by three men in masks made to look like Ms-13 gang members, dragged out, and put in the trunk of a car before being shot dead by the side of the road. The Maga allusions are therefore present from the start with pretty Malibu types falling victim to violent “cholos” for what appears to be no other reason besides the bloodlust Fox News’ fear-mongering editorials have told conservative Boomers is coming if they don’t remain vigilant. We eventually discover they’re actually after a photograph, but that’s just an excuse to let these racist stereotypes shine.
I say this because writer Corey Deshon and director Orson Oblowitz never provide a motive beyond terror in Trespassers.

"Sometimes you just can't stop what's coming..." IFC Midnight has released an official trailer for an indie horror film titled Trespassers, the latest from filmmaker Orson Oblowitz (The Queen of Hollywood Blvd). The home invasion horror premiered at FrightFest London last year, and also played in Germany's Fantasy Filmfest. Two couples rent a modern luxury desert home for the weekend hoping to sort out their messed-up lives. Just as they are about to settle in, a woman shows up at their door. And that's when the murderous trouble really starts. Because without knowing it, these four friends have just landed slap-bang in the wrong violent place at precisely the wrong bloody time. Starring Angela Trimbur, Zach Avery, Janel Parrish, Jonathan Howard, Fairuza Balk, Carlo Rota, Sebastian Sozzi, and Joey Abril. This seems so much like a been-there, done-that horror rehash pulling from You're Next and everything else we've already seen.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the season finale of “American Horror Story: Apocalypse”)
Hail a different Satan?
If you just finished the “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” finale, you probably have a lot of questions racing through your mind. But the biggest has to be, “What the heck just happened at the end there?” Yes, the season closer for the eighth installment in Ryan Murphy’s FX anthology series simultaneously gave us way too much information and not even remotely enough context for that information in the last couple minutes, which resulted in us knowing even less than we did going into this finale.
So what happens here is those two teens who were kidnapped and brought to Outpost 3, who haven’t been seen since Episode 3, popped up with just a few minutes left on the clock. We see them in the new timeline after Mallory (Billie Lourd) turned back...

(Spoilers ahead for all of “American Horror Story: Apocalypse”)
“American Horror Story” is at its best when it’s having fun, and the “Return to Murder House” episode of “Apocalypse” had one of the most fun scenes of the season when it introduced Anton LeVay (Carlo Rota) and his two Cardinals of the Church of Satan (Kathy Bates and Naomi Grossman). They came to said Murder House to perform a ritual to set Michael Langdon (Cody Fern) on the path to becoming the Antichrist.
During the ritual, they sacrifice a young woman (Emily Mest), with Lavey reaching inside her body while she’s still alive and pulling out her heart. Which Langdon then takes a big bite out of, triggering a cartoonish devil shadow behind him.

When it comes to the broader genre of reality programs, I’ve always loved those that you might call social experiments. From the various “decade house” series, or Frontier House, to those that have similarly put people into situations out of time, or at least out of their comfort zone. The CBC has announced a new series, Back in Time for Dinner, which will serve to take a Canadian family through six decades. The show will hit June 14th at 8 p.m. on CBC. Based on the Warner Bros. format that took a British family through similar paces, the series combines food, fashion and culture to turn the Campus family home into a virtual time machine. Each week the family will dive into a different decade, and much like those shows from the decade series, the shock of trying to cope with how things were in earlier times can make for quite the challenge.

Among the new offerings in the fall 2014 season has been the CW series Jane the Virgin, a show revolving around the titular Jane, a woman who finds herself accidentally artificially inseminated. While the premise provided a hurdle for the show, the pilot managed to effectively explain it, while also unabashedly showing off the series’ telenovela influences. As the season has continued, the show has continued maintaining the balance between emotional resonance and fun fantasy sequences. In addition, the series has shown a knack for being able to resolve storylines, rather than dragging them out, while still managing to give time to character development, all of which has resulted in a strong, confident series to date.

Hollywood remaking a foreign film is far from a new phenomenon, and adaption in this manner has yielded some truly great films. We have seen such successes like Seven Samurai transformed into The Magnificent Seven, and Infernal Affairs altered into The Departed.
On the other hand, there are movies like Brick Mansions. This remake of the Luc Besson / Pierre Morel French parkour action fest District B13 has much in common with the original including plot structure, action sequences, and even shares one of the co-leads. What it lacks is energy, craftsmanship, and originality. Fans of the original have little reason to examine this new take, and those coming in fresh will also find it difficult enjoy this tired dud of an action movie.

Telefilm Canada has confirmed its financial support of nearly $13 million of Canadian tax payers' money towards the production of nine English-language feature films through the 'Canada Feature Film Fund', although there doesn't seem to be anything culturally 'Canadian' about most of their selections, other than the crews that will be working on them.
Among the films receiving money include a psycho horror with a demonic 'Santa Claus', a bio pic about a former Queen of Sweden, the 'relationship' between 'James Dean' and a photographer, a thriller involving a Satanic child abuse sex ring, and an inflatable Sex Doll drug smuggling story:
The films are "After the Ball" (Sean Garrity), "A Christmas Horror Story" (Steven Hoban, Grant Harvey, Brett Sullivan), "Aloft" (Claudia Llosa), "A Worthy Companion" (Jason Sanchez, Carlos Sanchez), "Life" (Anton Corbijn), "Regression" (Alejandro Amenabar), "Rest Home" (Michael Rowe), "The Girl King" (Mika Kaurismäki) and "Zoom" (Pedro Morelli...

Relativity Media released their new action/drama flick, "Brick Mansions," into theaters this weekend. I just watched it, and thought it was very entertaining, delivering up plenty of hardcore action, drama, suspense, and a pretty good plotline. It stars: Paul Walker, David Belle, RZA, Gouchy Boy, Catalina Denis, and Carlo Rota. In the new flick, the plot revolves around dystopian Detroit, abandoned brick mansions left from better times, and now houses only the most dangerous criminals. Unable to control the crime, the police constructed a colossal containment wall around the area to protect the rest of the city. Heading into Us cinemas this spring, action-thriller Brick Mansions marks the final full performance from the late Paul Walker.
Inevitably, with the former film marking his final full role and the latter his incomplete final role, both Brick Mansions and Fast & Furious 7 will be inextricably bound with the actor’s tragic and untimely death last year.
Ever one to take up a challenge, Walker leads the American adaptation of Pierre Morel’s acclaimed French-actioner, District 13. And with the film soon heading into cinemas, the first domestic and international trailers have debuted online, along with the recent first poster.

Unable to control the crime, the police constructed a colossal containment wall around this area to protect the rest of the city. Thirteen is often associated with bad luck. Some buildings don’t even label their 13th floor “13.” But for Marvel’s and ABC’s “Agents of Shield,” it seems to be their lucky number. This week’s episode “T.R.A.C.K.S.” marked what could arguably be called a turning point for the show. Many have clamored for more integration of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and to use the show to debut new characters, something, they argue, Marvel has not been taking advantage of. It seems this was Marvel’s plan from the very beginning, with a major reveal getting a big fan reaction and the overarching storyline finally moving forward with this week’s episode. The Story: Now that Centipede is on the run, the crew is after Ian Quinn (David Conrad) in their efforts to track down the mysterious Clairvoyant. Following a tip from Italian Police Inspector...

With two Emmys to his name for his work on 24, co-creator Joel Surnow makes his feature directorial debut this year with Small Time.
The movie sees him move into more dramatic territory, like his more recent work on the small screen with The Kennedys.
Anchor Bay has released the first trailer over on Apple, teasing a couple of great cameos for fans of 24 alongside leading man Christopher Meloni.
Inspired by a true story, Al Klein (Meloni) and his longtime friend, Ash Martini (Norris) own a used car lot. These two know every trick in the book when it comes to selling cars. Martini is a good time charley, who never settled down. Klein, however, still pines for his ex-wife Barbara (Moynahan) who left him years ago for a more successful man. After their son, Freddy (Bostick), graduates high school, he decides to forego college in favor of selling cars with his old man.

Paul Walker movies: Few worthwhile efforts away from the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise (photo: Paul Walker in ‘Hours’) (See previous post: “Paul Walker Dead: Fast and Furious Actor Killed in Fiery Car Crash.”) Aside from the Fast and Furious franchise, Paul Walker was featured in about 15 movies since the turn of the century; most of those were little-seen releases that did nothing to expand his following beyond fans of slick, high-speed shenanigans, e.g., John Glenn’s thriller and straight-to-dvd release The Lazarus Project (2008), co-starring Piper Perabo; Wayne Kramer’s box office bomb Running Scared, with Vera Farmiga; John Stockwell’s mix of deep-sea adventure and crime thriller Into the Blue, with Jessica Alba and Josh Brolin; and another straight-to-dvd effort, Mukunda Michael Dewil’s poorly received thriller Vehicle 19 (2013). Paul Walker’s handful of more prestigious and/or successful films were Clint Eastwood’s World War II drama Flags of Our Fathers...

Kristin Kreuk and Adam Sinclair in Irvine Welsh’s Ecstasy
Irvine Welsh’s Ecstasy
Directed by Rob Heydon
Written by Rob Heydon and Ben Tucker
Canada, 2011
Ecstasy is defined as an overpowering feeling of happiness or uncontrollable excitement, an ethereal and trancelike state of self-transcendence. So, if you really think about it, Irvine Welsh’s Ecstasy is actually a bit of a misnomer because it’s nothing of the sort. A definitive structural mess with meandering and unfocused direction, coupled with unbelievably turgid and artificial dialogue, Ecstasy feels more like a synthetic compound than the real deal, a watered down and diluted facsimile of harder and more visceral films of the genre. In a sense, it’s the gateway drug to better drug films.
In it, Adam Sinclair is Lloyd, a pill-popping, rave-dancing, drug-smuggling hedonist who maintains his devil-may-care lifestyle in Edinburgh with his friends Woodsy and Ally (Billy Boyd...

Last week saw the release of a handful of new international films, with Jo Nesbø’s Headhunters topping the list, and this week brings with it a rather different line-up, with Peter Berg’s Battleship being the biggest name amongst the new arrivals, opposite Kevin Macdonald’s critically acclaimed documentary, Marley.
My picks of the week:
Kevin Macdonald’s Marley & Daniel Lee’s White Vengeance.

DVD and Blu-ray (inc. Digital and UltraViolet Copies)
Oscar-winner Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland) returned this year with Marley, a documentary following on from his Life in a Day project last year, bringing us a portrait of one of the most iconic figures in music of the last century.
And we’ve currently got three copies of the film on Blu-ray to give away – click here to enter the competition.

There’s a lot of new releases hitting cinemas this week with the major ones being kidnap-thriller Gone, Sci-Fi Actioner Lockout and comedy drama Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. The trailer for Gone has been on in cinemas for what seems like months now, and the more I see it, the less interesting it becomes. Lockout looks suitably bonkers and could well prove to be a real guilty pleasure from the sound of reviews I’ve been getting. Meanwhile Salmon Fishing in the Yemen looks like it may be a little too saccharine and mumsy for some tastes, but who knows, the trailer may be slightly misleading.
Of last week’s offerings, it’s Cabin in the Woods which has been receiving all the plaudits with everyone I know who has seen it telling me “don’t let anyone spoil it for you” and “watch it without knowing what happens...

Here’s a new trailer for Ecstasy which stars Billy Boyd who you’ll know from Lord of the Rings. He’s rather a long way from the Shire in this new movie though as you’ll see from the trailer. I’ve called it a red-band trailer in the title simply because it has the ‘C’ word written at the end of it and a split second of a sex scene but other than that, it won’t offend too much. Ecstasy is based on the book by Irvine Welsh (Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance) and will be with us April 20th.
Ecstasy stars Adam Sinclair, Kristin Kreuk, Billy Boyd, Carlo Rota, Stephen McHattie, Alex Lifeson and is directed by Rob Heydon.
Based on Irvine Welsh’s controversial book, Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance, Ecstasy is a twisted tale that explores the euphoric highs and the devastating lows of a chemical romance.

Well, it might take a while (3 1/2 years to be exact) but The Mentalist (TV) finally delivers on some much needed Lisbon (Robin Tunney) back story. One of the three Lisbon brothers makes an appearance and gets all twisted up in Team Lisbon's investigation and Jane (Simon Baker) might even get an "auntie Reese" story or two. I do love a good character drive episode! Chief of Lancaster Pd, Marnie Green is dead, and it looks like she was killed off site and the killer was too inept to even dump her body correctly. Kudos to Officer Price (Malcolm Barrett) for pulling off the cop grieving for his boss so convincingly. We know Team Lisbon would do the same for her. At the chief's residence, Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) runs into a problem… or two, when he's face to gun muzzle with a bountyhunter and his daughter. Of course, Lisbon is mortified...

U2 Drummer Larry Mullen Jr. Heading Up Man On The Train Remake
The Hollywood Reporter is telling us that U2's Larry Mullen Jr. (the drummer), is getting ready to take a step into the world of film. He will produce, act in and compose a remake of Patrice Leconte‘s comic thriller Man On The Train. Mullen Jr. will co-star with Donald Sutherland, Graham Greene, Tony Nardi, Carlo Rota and Kate O’Toole and Mary McGuckian will direct. Mullen Jr. is usually the quiet one in the band, not usually commanding a lot of the spotlight. So it's nice to see him get a chance to shine. He's a fantastic drummer but seeing as this is his first film role, I'm not sure how he'll hold up in front of the camera. The project seems to have come out of nowhere so we don't know much about it but...

We come back to Dallas this week with a bang. Literally. Jack and Dan are chasing an armed robber, to the point that Dan thinks he's going to cover himself in motor oil and stuff himself through a small hole in a steel door, at least until the Swat team shows up and takes over. Dan exchanges words with the team captain, played by Michael Shanks (Stargate: Sg-1, Burn Notice, Smallville), but having applied months earlier, Jack has an interview to get onto the squad.
