In a cluttered single-wide trailer in a snow-covered, anonymously dreary logging town in northern British Columbia, Bob Langmore finds himself disappearing. That it not to say that running away from his wife and daughter almost a decade ago to live a thankless life doing dangerous job as a millwright in a softwood milling operation will cause a man to vanish. No, in Geoff Redknap's extraordinary feature film debut, the disappearing is indeed, quite literal. The Unseen could be seen as a sophisticated and understated story of the plight of the 'invisible man,' but the drama and setting are so exceptionally observed, that it is better to view the film through the lens of a father coming to grips with the difficult consequences of being absent...

If you quote the columnist on the poster, you get into the poster column. All kidding aside, I was a big fan of Geoff Redknap's The Unseen, a Canuck-indie take on The Invisible Man story, and the quirky original artwork by Andrew Barr, that debuted at the Fantasia Film Festival in 2016. Here, after Raven Banner picked up the distribution of the film, is a slightly more conventional, dark and brooding take that might be confused, at first glance, with an eco horror or monster picture (along the lines of The Last Winter or The Thing), if it were indeed not for the pull quotes at the top. A nice touch here is the credit block in the middle of the poster, so translucent (on...

The Unseen is less about an invisible curse, and more about a family-man whose broken heart beats for the wife and daughter he left behind. You’ll sample grotesque glimpses into man’s usually-covered inner workings, but writer/director Geoff Redknap’s feature debut isn’t about horrors or scares. Instead, the veteran makeup artist/special effects guru parlays his prosthetic talents into an unnerving quest for one unlucky father, ripe with emotion and angst. You’ll get your Frankenstein-like reveals that make you gasp in astonishment, along with actual story constructs deeper than a few Hollow Man homages. This is genre work that offers something a little more than cheap thrills.
Aden Young stars as Bob Langmore, a former NHL prospect who fled from his family to become a mill worker. It sounds harsh, until we learn something special about Bob – he’s slowly turning invisible. There’s no explanation,...

Jo Satana will be delivering reviews from films exhibiting at the 2016 Fantasia International Film Festival!
Judging by the people lining up before The Unseen`s world premiere at Fantasia, I can tell you that at least a few have, at one point in time, probably wished they were invisible. I mean, who hasn’t? But once the novelty of hiding in public restrooms wears off (trust me, it does), what can you be left with other than that crushing feeling of solitude? Another sentiment some of those in line can relate to.
The Unseen is exactly the type of film I love discovering at Fantasia. It`s also the type of film I hate writing about because of how much of the Kool-Aid® it looks like I’ve consumed. All aboard the hype train!
The Unseen is a stinging, intimate tribute to those of us who just want to be left alone with our struggles.

He works at a saw mill and mostly keeps to himself, avoiding human interaction if at all possible. When Darlene reaches out to him, Bob returns home to reconnect with Eva, but as soon as he returns, Eva mysteriously goes missing. Now, it’s up to Bob to risk discovery and the life he’s created for himself in order to find the daughter he loves. Watch a trailer for the film below.

For the fifth year in a row, October gets a little creepier and scarier when the Spooky Movie Film Festival rolls into the Washington, D.C. area on Oct. 21-25 for six terrifying nights of of feature films and shorts.
Every year, Spooky Movie redefines the very definition of “horror” by presenting an absolutely unique selection films from all over the world. This year the bloody offerings range from backwoods horror comedies to documentaries to Norwegian and British zombie flicks to Australian monster movies and more.
Most exciting, however, is the return of the father of the splatter movie himself: Herschell Gordon Lewis, who will be screening his latest gore extravaganza, the diabolical The Uh-Oh Show!. This is Lewis’ first gross-out flick in seven years and is an unholy combination of blood, social satire and fairy tales. Bad Lit’s seen it and thinks it’s a real hoot and a holler.

Sure, it was great to experience this year’s lineup of feature films at TAD08, but also included with each screening was a generally-fantastic short film, mostly of the darkly humorous variety. Here, then, is a little wrap-up of the short films I saw that got the ghouls giggling this last week.
#1: Treevenge. Canada, 2008. Directed by Jason Eisener. Rating: 9/10
A great concept, beautifully executed. We follow the brutal hacking, packing and deco-racking of a group of prescient Christmas trees as they go from the forest to xmas morn in a cul-de-sac of middle class families. Then they snap, with gruesome and hilarious results, attacking and killing everyone in the neighborhood, from the unbelieving parents to an unforgettable scene with a little baby. Gory and yet oddly funny. You’ll never look at an xmas tree the same way again.
#2: The Auburn Hills Breakdown. Canada, 2008. Directed by Geoff Redknap.
