Nearly two years have gone by since Scream Factory brought the “nature run amok” cult classic Alligator and its sequel Alligator II: The Mutation to Blu-ray in North America. Now 101 Films’ Black Label are set to Alligator a 4K release in the UK – and since 4K Uhd discs are region free, fans outside the UK will be able to enjoy this release as well! The release date is January 29th, and copies are available for pre-order through the 101 Films website. The Alligator 4K is accompanied by a fresh Blu-ray release of Alligator II: The Mutation, but if you’re outside the UK you might need a region free player to watch that one.
Here’s the information on the release:
101 Films presents cult classic creature feature Alligator (1980) on 4K Uhd, along with the TV cut and 1991 sequel Alligator II: The Mutation (1991) on Blu-ray, title 033 on the 101 Films Black Label.

It's fair to say that Ryan Gosling is on a roll. Taking advantage of his sizable indie cred after starring in cult classics like "Drive" and "The Place Beyond the Pines," Gosling has been trying his hand at bigger tentpole films with massive budgets that have mostly been paying off, save for a few unfortunate misfires, through no fault of his own. The unparalleled success of Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" even took advantage of the actor's singing talents with the show-stopper "I'm Just Ken," which landed on Billboard's Top 100.
Capitalizing on the red hot Kenergy from "Barbie," Gosling is taking his movie star good looks and impressive comedic chops over to the new action comedy romance "The Fall Guy," based loosely on the ABC TV series of the same name that aired from 1981 to 1986. Judging by what we've seen so far, "The Fall Guy" looks like it's striking the right balance between high-flying stunts,...

The new horror film “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” was dubbed “Dracula on a Boat” by social media users, and the twist on the chapter from Bram Stoker’s iconic horror novel definitely did deliver on the premise of the age-old vampire feasting on the crew of an unlucky ship.
Introducing a monster of any kind — alien, werewolf, zombies — to a vehicle that can’t stop and can’t let anyone off is a tried-and-true horror formula. Here are some of the movies where the combo of “creature” + “claustrophobic form of transportation” worked and some where it ran aground.

Michael Beach was in his late twenties and primed for a breakout performance when he landed the role of Pluto in Carl Franklin's "One False Move." This was not supposed to be that performance. It was a low-budget crime flick from a couple of unknown screenwriters named Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson that was intended to go straight to video. But when L.A. Weekly journo Anne Thompson caught an early screening, she spread the word to her critic colleagues. Once the Los Angeles Times' Sheila Benson and the Chicago Sun-Times' Roger Ebert began raving about the film, the distributor, I.R.S. Releasing, opted for a small theatrical release. The movie wound up on multiple year-end top 10 lists and earned five Independent Spirit Award nominations (with Franklin beating out newcomer Quentin Tarantino for Best Director).

Carl Franklin’s brilliantly dark breakout, the 1992 indie “One False Move,” is now out in a new 4k edition from Criterion Channel.
Franklin talked to TheWrap about why it was so important to show the “emotional” violence of the opening scenes, even though it had scores of people, and his his own agent, walking out of screenings.
He also discussed landing the late Bill Paxton, his first choice for the lead role of the naïve small-town sheriff, Dale “Hurricane” Dixon, and how audiences were “legitimately frightened” of Michael Beach’s serial killer character.
Bill Paxton in “One False Move” (Criterion Channel)
TheWrap: It’s such a great role for Bill Paxton. How did he end up playing Hurricane?
Carl Franklin: [The] first time I ever saw Bill was in “Aliens.” He was perfectly the guy. Bill was who we wanted from the very beginning and we had to go through our...

The creature feature just isn’t explored enough anymore. Jaws was a monster of a success story and ended up having three sequels on its own and had a slew of imitators. 1980 would give us, in my humble opinion, one of the better ones with Alligator starring Robert Forster. It was successful too, making 6 and a half million on a 1.5-million-dollar budget. I know that’s not crazy money, but it was a hit and had a fun pedigree with it that remains very popular today. Its one of the movies that keeps selling well with new and old fans and so it recently got put on 4K. There weren’t as many creature flicks through the rest of the...

Sias Odendaal and Michael Pakleppa's 1987 film "Nukie" is only remarkable for how undeniably terrible it is. Very clearly riding on the coattails of Steven Spielberg's "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," "Nukie" follows the adventures of the titular space alien as it crash lands in the African savannah and befriends two young brothers named Tiko and Toki (Siphiwe Mlangeni and Sipho Mlangeni). Much of the film is devoted to reuniting Nukie with his alien compatriot Miko (both played by Anthony Morrison) who crash-landed in the United States, and who is being held in a high-security military facility. The two aliens can communicate telepathically, and they repeatedly scream each other's names, perhaps inspiring rowdier audience members to join in.
"Nukie" has appeared on lists of the worst movies ever made, and is a largely miserable experience. Steve Railsback from "The Stunt Man" and "Lifeforce" appears, as does Glynnis Johns from "Mary Poppins.

A new episode of the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series has just been released, and with this one we’re looking back at a film that was made by one of the legendary “masters of horror”. The master in question is Tobe Hooper, the director who brought us The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Funhouse, and the Hooper movie we’re recommending today is his 1985 “space vampires” sci-fi horror movie Lifeforce (watch it Here). To find out all about Lifeforce, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Hooper from a screenplay by Dan O’Bannon and Don Jakoby and based on the novel The Space Vampires by Colin Wilson, Lifeforce has the following synopsis: A mission to investigate Halley’s Comet discovers an even stranger phenomenon: an alien spacecraft! A friend of his family told Deadline that Flynn died October 5 of natural causes in Los Angeles.
He started in the business during the 1950s but left publicity for a while to write for fan magazines. In 1962, Flynn joined the newly formed ABC on-air promotion department as a writer-producer. The 1980s were a very dangerous time for the younger generation onscreen. Any teen or twenty-something movie character in the slasher genre of the era was pretty much guaranteed to get the chop. 1989 slasher gem Hell High is a case in point – no sooner have the credits rolled heads have started rolling. Or rather, a delinquent biker tears the head off a young girl’s plastic dolly in a rage – the little girl is not happy, and the biker and his girlfriend end up impaled on iron spikes.
To celebrate the release of Hell High on Special Edition Blu-ray, and Limited Edition O-card Blu-ray, from Arrow Video, here are eight more ‘80s slashers featuring everything from terrorising twins to killer mascots via masked, axe-wielding psychopaths.
Blood Rage (1987)
Twins Todd and Terry seem like sweet boys, that is, until one of them takes an axe to the face of a fellow patron at the local drive-in.

Night Caller opens with visions of a murder underneath the main credits before Clementine an operator for Jade Mei’s gets a call from the man she saw in the visions before he commits the crime for real.
And that murder serves notice to viewers that this isn’t going to be a Scream or Blumhouse style mainstream horror film. There are repeated gory closeups of a large knife entering the victim’s body. A shift of camera angle to some not so explicit shots that suggest the knife is getting shoved somewhere else. And the ranting killer taking the somehow still living woman’s scalp as a souvenir.

Hey, everyone! We’re back with a brand new installment of our horror and sci-fi home media recap, and if you’re looking to check out some fun stuff this upcoming Memorial Day weekend, maybe this week’s releases can help keep you entertained. If you haven’t had a chance to check them out yet, both Umma featuring Sandra Oh and Matt Reeves’ The Batman arrive on Tuesday via a variety of formats. Both Tobe Hooper’s Lifeforce and James Wan’s Malignant are getting the 4K format treatment this week, and somehow I missed the fact that there was a RoboCop TV series at some point, but that’s being released on both Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday. And on a bittersweet note, the Foo Fighters’ Studio 666 is making its home entertainment debut this week as well.

Hey everyone! We have one last batch of horror and sci-fi home media releases headed our way before the end of the month, and this week’s offerings are massive, with well over 20 titles coming out on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD this Tuesday alone.
One of my favorite creature features ever is getting some love in HD finally, with Scream Factory’s 4K release of Lewis Teague’s Alligator (and its sequel is headed to Blu-ray this week as well), and the horror comedy Dead Heat is also getting a 4K upgrade. For all you giallo fans out there, Forgotten Gialli: Volume 3 is being released tomorrow and features three more Italian classics genre fans are going to want to own, and Severin Films is keeping busy with a ton of titles this week too: Bloody Pit of Horror, Black Candles, Night of the Demon, and The Halfway House.

The ’80s Slasher Classic Deadly Games (1982) will be available on Blu-ray February 22nd from Arrow Video
Steve Railsback (famed for his unhinged performance as Charles Manson in 1976’s TV mini-series Helter Skelter) is at his sinister best as a troubled Vietnam Vet in 1982’s Deadly Games – a tale of madness, murder and adultery from writer/director Scott Mansfied.
A masked maniac with a penchant for a horror-themed board game is playing his own twisted game with the women of a small American town. Each time the dice is rolled, another victim meets a grisly end. Returning home to mourn the death of her murdered sister, Keegan (Jo Ann Harris) befriends local cop Roger and oddball cinema projectionist Billy (Railsback) – but soon finds herself in the killer’s sights.

Having been a film fanatic my entire life I was thrilled when, in June 1982, a new magazine burst onto the scene and quickly caught my attention. Devoted exclusively to new and upcoming motion picture releases, Coming Attractions cost $2.50 per issue and was published on a bi-monthly basis. It didn’t last long, unfortunately, but I recall that a bit of an uproar occurred over the cover of the March/April 1983 issue which featured a half-naked Valerie Kaprisky in a promo for the Breathless remake. Seriously, back in the day who complained about a beautiful naked woman on a magazine cover??
In one of the earlier issues, there was an article published about an upcoming horror film entitled Trick or Treats starring David Carradine. I don’t recall the film ever opening in my area and wondered whatever happened to it...

Brian’s claims for the film as a satire can be borne out by its British release title, Blood Camp Thatcher, a back-handed salute to the steely Prime Minister.

There have been many dramas in which actors portray legendary true-life psycho killers, and the overwhelming majority of them are less than convincing. Every so often, though, an actor — through looks, skill, and temperament — will connect to the monster he’s playing in a way that’s so uncanny it seizes and chills you. Jeremy Davies’ performance as Charles Manson in the 2004 version of “Helter Skelter” was like that — it was the definitive Manson, sinuous and seething, even greater than Steve Railsback’s celebrated portrayal. Jeremy Renner, before anyone had heard of him, played Jeffrey Dahmer in the 2002 indie gem “Dahmer,” and he was remarkable: a lonely vacant nerd of horror.

Richard Rush, the director of “The Stunt Man,” died April 8 at the age of 91, and if you look up his credits he has only 14 of them (and one was an episode of “The Mod Squad”). In a career that spanned 35 years, he made just a dozen features. Yet to an unusual degree, he meant every one of them. Maybe to a fault: As he noted in “The Sinister Saga of Making ‘The Stunt Man,'” his documentary look back at the fabled cult film about filmmaking, Rush gave away the rights to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and turned down “Jaws.” He was very choosy. Yet when you watch his movies, you always see them peering around corners and glancing ahead, anticipating the world that was coming.

Richard Rush, who picked up two Oscar nominations, best director and adapted screenplay, for his extraordinary 1980 film “The Stunt Man,” starring Peter O’Toole, died April 8 in Los Angeles. He was 91.
His wife Claude said he had been suffering from longtime health issues but that he died comfortably at home. She said in a statement, “He will be remembered for a string of landmark films in the 1960s and ’70s, culminating with his 1980 multi-Oscar-nominated classic, ‘The Stunt Man,’ which is widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. To those who were privileged to know and love him, he will be even more warmly remembered, and missed, for his integrity, his loyalty, his endless generosity of spirit and his boundless support and mentorship of other filmmakers, writers or indeed anyone who ever dared to, in the words of his ‘Stunt Man’ hero Eli Cross, ’tilt at a windmill.

Lately when I cruise the video aisles looking for tasty horror to sample, I find myself yearning for something…simple. Nothing with a boatload of subtext or heavy lifting involved; no downers and certainly nothing in the pandemic family, thank you very much. That traipsing up and down the aisles led me to Blue Monkey (1987), a fun throwback to the ‘50s giant monster flicks that flooded the drive-ins whether the teens were watching them or their date.
Released in late September by International Spectrafilm, Blue Monkey was summarily dismissed by critics at the time as just another low-budget shocker, even by horror fans; yes, I passed on this when it came out because I didn’t have a clue what a blue monkey was.
But that’s okay, because as it turns out, the filmmakers didn’t either; one of the kids in the film utters that maybe they’ll...

Back in 2009, writer/director Brad Sykes, producer Josephina Sykes, and their passionate cast and crew reminded viewers that "in space, everyone screams" with their sci-fi horror film Plaguers, which follows a group of space pirates battling a demonic infection that turns people into ravenous monsters. To celebrate the cult horror film's decade mark, last year Wild Eye Releasing unleashed Plaguers on a new 10th anniversary Blu-ray and DVD, and we caught up with Brad and Josephina for our latest Q&a feature to reflect on the long journey to get the film made, their fondest memory from the film's festival run, and they also discuss the new goodies fans can enjoy on the anniversary release of Plaguers!
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Brad and Josephina, and congratulations on the recent 10th anniversary Blu-ray and DVD release of Plaguers! How did this 10th anniversary release come about?...

Plaguers is a Sci-fi Horror movie that was initially released in 2008, some 12 years ago, but is being re-released in a “10th Anniversary Edition” through Wild Eye Releasing, and so I had a chance to sit down with it and see what it had to offer.
Directed and written by Brad Sykes (The Pact), Plaguers is the tale of a crew of sexy space pirates (yep) who hijack an Earth-bound fuel-transport ship, and, accidentally, an alien virus known as “Thanatos” is released, which mutates victims and turns them into demonic and starving monsters. The sexy pirates (yep) and the crew of the ship must band together in order to take out these undead, erm… plaguers, as the vessel approaches Earth.

Fifty years ago this month, Steve Railsback was a 23-year-old actor in New York when he caught a newspaper headline that Sharon Tate and four others had been brutally massacred in a house in L.A. “I remember thinking, ‘God, what’s happening in this fucking world?’” Railsback recalls.
Seven years later, in 1976, Railsback would be part of one of the first attempts to depict what transpired that horrific night. In the two-part TV movie Helter Skelter, based on the Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry best-seller about Charles Manson, his Family,...

No other mass criminal or cult figure in American history has garnered as much fascination within Hollywood and popular culture as Charles Manson (though Ted Bundy is coming close). He and his “family” have been the subject of movies, parodies, and he even landed a Rolling Stone cover. “American Horror Story: Cult” had an actor portraying Manson, and Quentin Tarantino is digging up the past for his “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” featuring the Manson Family murders. Here is a sampling of actors who have dared to play the notorious figure.
Steve Railsback – “Helter Skelter” (1976)
The memory of Manson was still fresh when this TV special based on Vincent Bugliosi’s book was aired. CBS even made it a two-night special.
Michael Reid MacKay – “Summer Dreams: The Story of the Beach Boys” (1990)
This TV special about the career of the Beach Boys explored Manson’s relationship with Beach Boys member Dennis Wilson.

This year's The Mummy reboot shares a surprising amount with the 1985 sci-fi horror classic, Lifeforce...
Nb: The following contains spoilers for 2017's The Mummy and 1985's Lifeforce.

When Universal Studios made The Mummy back in 1932, it was in the wake of Tut-mania: the fascination with Ancient Egypt following the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb a decade earlier. As Egyptian-inspired symbols and designs began to appear on everything from jewellery to cigarette ads, stories began to circulate that the pharoah's tomb was cursed - and thus The Mummy, about a group of archaeologists who provoke the wrath of a long-dead Imhotep (Boris Karloff, hypnotic as always) emerged.
The Mummy's success was such that it became a long-running franchise: Universal made four direct sequels between 1940 and 1944, with a comedy spin-off, Abbott And Costello Meet The Mummy, joining them in 1955. The UK's Hammer Film...

We revisit the 10 most memorable guest performances in The X-Files' long history, from Rhys Darby to Luke Wilson and beyond...
As in our previous features, in this list, we’re celebrating ten of the most effective guest performances in The X-Files over the course of its run – and yes, that includes the 2016 revival series. By ‘guest appearance’ we mean an actor who appeared as a particular character no more than twice over the course of the series (more appearances and it becomes a recurring role). As a result, this list naturally tends towards a celebration of performances during Monster of the Week episodes, since characters taking part in arc plots tend to appear more often. The show has, of course, featured impressive performances from actors in recurring roles as well – but that’s another list for another day!

Dystopia! What a place to be. Well, except when people are mulched to feed an over populated society (Soylent Green) or killed at the age of 30 to control it (Logan’s Run); and in the case of Turkey Shoot (1982), hunted for sport by society’s elite. Come to think of it, Dystopia is kind of a bummer.
Released in its native Australia in October, Turkey Shoot wouldn’t see the light of day in the U.S. until September of ’83 under the title Escape 2000. Both titles work; the former playing into the more lurid elements, while the latter highlights the cut rate sci-fi angle. And it’s the swirling combination of the two that gives this sucker its punch. Turkey Shoot is A class exploitation with a down under smile.

Brian Trenchard-Smith’s 1982 actioner is an exploitation riff on 1932’s The Most Dangerous Game featuring a cast made in mondo heaven including Steve Railsback, Olivia Hussey and Michael Craig (Harryhausen’s Mysterious Island). Brian’s claims for the film as a satire can be borne out by its British release title, Blood Camp Thatcher, a back-handed salute to the steely Prime Minister.

On Sunday, January 24th, Fox will bring back Chris Carter’s brilliant series, The X-Files, for a six-episode revival run that will reunite beloved FBI Special Agents Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) for more alien-related exploits.

Chef Boyardee: Wells Fails with Filmmaking Recipe
For his third film outing, director John Wells delves into the catty universe of high-end cuisine with Burnt (formerly titled Adam Jones for its lead character) with the same square generalities formulating the emotionless energy of previous dramas August: Osage County and The Company Men. Bradley Cooper once again plays a smug playboy, one of those confused personalities charged with simultaneous duties as narcissistic tyrant and charismatic romantic lead.
Attempting to extol the high-stakes wheeling and dealing of the fine-dining universe, it’s a film professing to depict the elegance and privilege of a specific scene but couldn’t be any more thanklessly banal. Much like another Bradley Cooper vehicle, the literary minded The Words (2012), the subject matter is sidelined by standard issue formulaic tropes, satisfying every conceivable audience expectation.

Cinema’s Hidden Pearls – Part I
By Alex Simon
One of nature’s rarest items, a pearl is produced within the soft tissue (specifically the mantle) of a living shelled mollusk. Lifeforce is the movie that pretty much killed Tobe Hooper's mainstream directing career. The first of his three-movie deal with the great Cannon Films, the film recouped less than half of its $25 million budget (which, for Cannon, might as well be Avatar money) upon its theatrical release and made Hooper something of a laughingstock in the process. Maybe because his previous movie, Poltergeist, had been so commercial (which has more to do with Spielberg’s influence than Hooper's), a lot of the audience for Lifeforce assumed Hooper didn't know what he was doing — they concluded that the movie just got away from him. Nope. Tobe Hooper knew exactly the movie he was making. Lifeforce is a crazy movie. It was designed as a crazy movie. It...
