This is what we can already confirm. 2016 will be an epic year for Michael Shannon and not because he just received an Indie Spirit nom for Best Supporting Actor in 99 Homes (see pic above). With his services enlisted by Jeff Nichols, Liza Johnson, Tom Ford, Robert Scott Wildes, Werner Herzog and Matthew M. Ross, the versatile actor will be everywhere…including Bart Freundlich‘s sixth feature film. Freundlich got his big start at Sundance back in 1997 for The Myth of Fingerprints and would follow that up by bringing World Traveler (2002) to the fest but he hasn’t been back since. Shot this past June in NYC, Wolves stars Shannon, Carla Gugino and newcomer Taylor John Smith in this tragi-family drama.

You’ve got to love a good bit of indie crazy, and this Plus One movie (+1) may just be in line with some of the best you’re likely to run into. Of course, a wild, sci-fi ride is going to need to be your cup of tea, and revolving around a group of teen-somethings at a massive party will need to not kill it for you… but, once we clear those hurdles, we’re gold.
You may suspect that I’m joking, but I assure you… well, no, I won’t.
If you have to kick out some raging party movie anyway (and we do… there are rules), how about if we also throw in some strange time twisting alien event, and a core group of friends who have to figure out what to do about the other thems?

As part of the How They Did It Panel Series, the “We Need A Bigger Boat-Producing Independent Cinema” panel had producers speak about the struggles they had not only making their first films, but also the films they’re working on right now.
Guests of the Producers Panel were Josh Astrachan, who produced Gosford’s Park, as well as Rose Ganguzza, whose latest and widely distributed film was Margin Call. Jonathan Grey was in attendance as well, having produced not only Margin Call but Machete as well recently. Dolly Hall, who produced 54, was there as well, with Bob Salerno talking about Arbitrage and Tim Perell, who produced The Rebound. I wasn’t expecting some of the first Cannes-related business to pertain to the director of 2009′s Last House on the Left — maybe Xavier Dolan would sell the movie he thinks should be in competition, or something — but here we are. According to THR, the (technically) aforementioned Dennis Iliadis has made a deal to helm the supernatural Plus One, which Sierra/Affinity and producer Tim Perell will hawk to the international crowd in just a week or so.
Written by Bill Gullo — and based on an idea from the helmer himself — Plus One, as the title may hint, revolves around “the party of the decade” (that was my italicization), and how everything spins out of control when unknown forces start terrorizing the hapless attendees. People will, more likely than not, perish.

Comedian-turned-filmmaker Bobcat Goldthwait ("World's Greatest Dad") has penned a script and will direct a film based on the 1975 album "Schoolboys in Disgrace" by The Kinks says The Hollywood Reporter.
The story follows a troublesome schoolboy and his posse who are humiliated by the headmaster and vow to fight back against "the Establishment." He later becomes a supervillain named Mr. Flash.
Goldthwait describes it as "a realistic high school musical for all the kids who hate sugary, sweet, unrealistic high school musicals." The original songs will be re-recorded by the eventual cast members.
Howard Gertler and Tim Perell will produce with filming to take place in the UK.

Little Miss Sunshine, a comedy about a dysfunctional family on an ill-fated road trip, and Half Nelson, a drama about the bond forged between a drug-addicted teacher and one of his students, lead the list of nominees for Film Independent's Spirit Awards, announced Tuesday.
Fox Searchlight's Sunshine and ThinkFilm's Nelson picked up five nominations apiece in the main categories, including best feature. Previously known as the Independent Spirit Awards, the awards, sponsored by Los Angeles-based Film Independent, honor achievements in the indie film scene. The winners will be revealed Feb. 24 at the group's annual awards luncheon, which takes place in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica.
In the best feature category, Sunshine and Nelson will compete with American Gun, a drama about the proliferation of guns in the U.S.; The Dead Girl, a mystery-thriller about a serial killer's victim; and Pan's Labyrinth, a politically charged fantasy film.
While the awards celebrate American independent cinema, a film qualifies if two of the three principal filmmmakers reside in the U.S., which is why the group included the Spanish-language Labyrinth.
Unlike past years, when some Spirit Awards nominees approached moderately budgeted studio fare, this year's selection hewed more closely to the lower-budgeted indie line. Sunshine, which was produced for about $8 million, has gone on to gross nearly $59 million domestically, while Nelson, which cost less than $1 million, has collected $2.7 million. In all, the group's nominating committees reached out to embrace 41 films, about half of which were produced for less than $1 million.
Past Spirit Award winners Felicity Huffman and Don Cheadle announced the nominees at the Hotel Sofitel in Los Angeles.
"There really is an explosion of talent in the lower-budgeted films," Film Independent executive director Dawn Hudson said. "We saw more submissions of lower-budgeted films and better lower-budgeted films. Independent film is no longer confined to small character dramas. There are political films here, satires, comedies and fantasies. And there's (David Lynch's) 'Inland Empire, ' which combines a lot of them."
Lynch and his frequent collaborator, Laura Dern, were singled out to receive a Special Distinction Award in recognition of their work together running from Blue Velvet through Inland Empire.
Sunshine and Nelson also earned noms for their directors: the team of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who helmed the comedy, and Ryan Fleck, who steered the drama. Their category also includes the late Robert Altman for A Prairie Home Companion, Karen Moncrieff for Dead Girl and Steven Soderbergh for Bubble.
Dayton and Faris were driving their kids to school -- in a blue van -- when they got the word.
"Our (twin) boys are 11, very into sports and very competitive -- they were cheering," Dayton said, laughing. Added Faris: "It's nice for them to know we are not moving out of our house. It gives them a small sense of security, even though there's no cash prize."
Alex Orlovsky and Jamie Patricof, producers of both Nelson and "Point & Shoot," were nominated for the Axium Producers Award, which rewards emerging producers with a $50,000 grant. Their competition is Julie Lynn, producer of Nine Lives and 10 Items or Less, and Howard Gertler and Tim Perell, producers of Shortbus and Pizza.
"We were all kind of bummed when we didn't get any awards at Sundance -- we got nothing, not even a consolation take-home tote bag," Patricof said. "This is a 180-degree turnaround."
Said ThinkFilm exec Mark Urman: "We're actively engaged in a properly funded and credible campaign for the Oscars in certain categories, and this helps. These nominations are sweet enough on their own, but it's no secret they're part of an even larger agenda."
For best male lead, the Spirit Awards nominated Aaron Eckhart for his lobbyist in Thank You for Smoking, Ryan Gosling for his teacher in Nelson, Edward Norton as a betrayed husband in The Painted Veil, Ahmad Razvi as a Pakistani rock star working as a coffee vendor in New York in Man Push Cart and Forest Whitaker as a high school principal in American Gun.
Gosling, whose chances of snaring a corresponding Oscar nom received a boost, said: "We watched (the nominations) on streaming video on our computer, and it was coming through very stutteringly. It was fun to see Don Cheadle say 'Half Nelson' so many times."...

CANNES -- John Cameron Mitchell's Shortbus is a pansexual comedy that tries to get at character through graphic sexual behavior. So here's the question the movie raises: Is sex really a spectator sport? Pornography, of course, is designed to stimulate sexual excitement in viewers, which they may choose to relieve or not, but the sexual acts are disconnected from emotions. In this film, however, Mitchell -- who created his script by work-shopping scenes and characters with his open-minded and brave cast -- wants to, as he puts it, "use the language of sex as a metaphor for other aspects of the characters' lives."
Well, you probably could try the same thing with how people eat or drive cars. But can one really achieve dramatic enlightenment by watching characters engage in a single activity for an entire movie? Will we really understand their lives as a consequence?
There will be those, of course, who will see this movie as profoundly sophisticated and artful. Just as predictably, the film will raise the hackles of our current conservative critics who howl over any breach of orthodoxy, which may make Shortbus a hot boxoffice ticket for a brief period. Yet the film lacks the depth and discipline of Mitchell's first film venture, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which makes Shortbus a real disappointment.
The title refers to a New York multisex underground salon, named after the school bus used for children with disabilities or emotional problems. It is to this salon that the movie's characters repair to watch or engage in public group sex.
The subplots are cleverly linked by digital artist John Bair, through whose 3-D animated cityscape the movie can glide at a moment's notice.
These include Sofia (Sook-Yin Lee), a sex therapist unable to achieve an orgasm with her loving husband Rob (Raphael Barker); Severin (Lindsay Beamish), a dominatrix who lives in an industrial storage unit and has never had a lasting relationship; James (Paul Dawson) and his devoted Jamie (PJ DeBoy), a gay couple who enter the crisis zone when James suggests opening up their sexual relationship to other partners.
They find what they're looking for in Ceth (Jay Brannan), a model-singer who falls for them as a couple. Meanwhile, James has a stalker, albeit a caring and gentle one, in Caleb (Peter Stickles), whose apartment across the street from James affords him a perfect vantage point to photograph his sexual couplings.
Unfortunately, the characters lack dimension when removed from the arena of sex. All problems, goals and desires are sexual in nature. Jobs, ambitions and families are banished to the very margins of the movie, if seen at all.
Mitchell does partially succeed in his sex-as-metaphor objective. Moments of genuine humor emerge from the geometry of the couplings. For instance, when was the last time you saw or heard anyone perform The Star-Spangled Banner on the rear portion of the human anatomy?
You do gain some insights into these people through the inventive positions and marital aids they so eagerly employ. But you gain more in the ceaseless group-therapy speak that continues before, during and after much of their sexual activities, a tacit admission that merely watching sex isn't going to tell us that much about peoples' lives.
This is a cheerful and even a tad sentimental film, whose actors, despite in some cases a lack of experience, deliver believable performances in and out of their clothes. But to answer the question, no, sex doesn't really make a good spectator sport.

This review was written for the festival screening of "Trust the Man".
TORONTO -- Just when it looked like the romantic comedy was doomed to forever repeat itself in some kind of formulaic purgatory, along comes filmmaker Bart Freudlich with "Trust the Man", a smart, sharply observed, highly affable look at contemporary relationships that finally injects a little life in the stagnating genre.
Working with a beautifully in-sync comic ensemble including Julianne Moore, David Duchovny, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Billy Crudup, Freundlich, who's Moore's husband, delivers what is by far his most accessible -- and most satisfying -- film to date.
Fox Searchlight, which picked up the film midfestival, could have a tidy little hit on its hands, appealing to a grown-up audience hankering for something adult without the "Wedding Crashers"/"40 Year Old Virgin" frat boy vibe.
With New York City providing the appropriately urbane backdrop, the picture surveys the in-transition lives of two couples in very different stages of their relationship.
Rebecca is a successful actress whose sex-addict husband Tom (Duchovny) is a stay-at-home dad for their two young kids.
Her commitment-phobic younger brother Tobey (Billy Crudup), meanwhile, is perfectly content to stay the course of his 7-year relationship with girlfriend Elaine (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a budding children's book writer aching to start a family of her own.
Despite the efforts of a couple of therapists played by Garry Shandling and Bob Balaban, Tom and Rebecca and Tobey and Elaine are each about to come face to face with potentially life-changing, but quite funny, obstacles.
Both geographically and thematically speaking, writer-director Freundlich finds himself on vintage Woody Allen turf here -- as in the "Manhattan"/"Husbands and Wives" Woody Allen -- while still managing to lend the production a unique voice of its own.
And Allen would've killed for Freundlich's terrific cast.
It's a real kick seeing Julianne Moore playing it for laughs for a change, and she's such a natural you wish she'd have signed on to do comedies years ago.
The same can be said for Crudup, a usually intense actor who plays things loose and loopy as the delightful Gyllenhaal's slacker b.f., while Duchovny looks to be really enjoying himself on screen for the first time in a long while.
Also amusing is Ellen Barkin as a book publisher who takes a shine to Gyllenhaal; James Le Gros as Dante, a sensitive singer-songwriter; and Eva Mendes as a friend of Crudup's from college looking for a little reunion action.
While the scripting loses a bit of its bite in the third act, when Freundlich playfully apes some of those rickety romantic comedy cliches missing from the rest of the film, it's a minor quibble.
Behind the scenes, it's also nice to see New York actually being played by itself for a change, and director of photography Tim Orr ("George Washington", "Little Manhattan"), takes full advantage of the local flavor, like Serendipity and The Magnolia Bakery, while incorporating those ever-changing elements, from wind to rain to snow and back again.
