Before he went on to make HBO’s hit series The White Lotus, Mike White would partner with Jack Black for the charmingly funny music-themed comedy School of Rock. The movie drew on Black’s affinity for the music genre as he would previously play as one-half of the rock duo Tenacious D with Kyle Glass. While he’s currently obsessed with Minecraft after his time filming the movie adaptation, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Black’s eager to return to the School of Rock for another movie.
According to THR, Black would recently speak with the publication Joe, when he said, “I wish there’d be a School of Rock 2 Electric Boogaloo.” Black would also love to see White return to write the movie, “You know Mike White wrote the first one and he’s a genius. And we’d have to have Mike White back in the saddle,...

Jack Black is totally down for a School of Rock sequel.
More than two decades after the beloved musical comedy, directed by Richard Linklater, premiered in 2003, the actor-comedian recently told Joe that he’s “ready” to reprise his role as energetic musician Dewey Finn.
“I wish there’d be a School of Rock 2 Electric Boogaloo,” he said, referencing the movie title of the 1984 sequel to Breakin’.
School of Rock follows Dewey, who became a substitute teacher at an uptight elementary private school after being kicked out of his rock band. But along the way, he tries to turn his class into their own rock band. The film also starred Mike White, Joan Cusack, Adam Pascal, Lucas Papaelias, Chris Stack, Sarah Silverman and Miranda Cosgrove.
Black also admitted that he would like to see the original film’s writer, White, return to pen the script for the hypothetical sequel. However, he acknowledged that White,...

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sara Bareilles and members of the Broadway community serenaded Times Square Thursday in a show of solidarity with the Writers Guild of America.
At the themed WGA Broadway Day Rally, performers belted out classic show tunes with nods to organizing such as “Do You Hear the People Sing?” from Les Misérables, “Ya Got Trouble” from The Music Man, with references to residuals and streaming and “America” performed by Rent star Adam Pascal and Catch Me if You Can star Norbert Leo Butz, his original understudy. Members from SAG-AFTRA, Actors’ Equity, IATSE and Local 802 AFM, the musicians’ union, attended the rally led by Girls5eva star Paula Pell.

To say that 2021 has been a weird year is quite an understatement. Things started off really bleak then seemed to be getting better only to culminate in the uncertainty we now feel about everything. But we still got awards ceremonies and plenty of great moments from them. Due to pandemic precautions, all the ceremonies had to find ways to adapt so that they could still be events full of stars but also emphasizing the safety of those in attendance. Some of those presentations, like this year’s Grammy Awards, actually made this list which was selected by 15 of the site’s editors and contributors.

The story of two teenage girls growing up on Cape Cod and realising that their father is in a relationship with another man, Wild About Harry is a very personal story to its co-writer and director, Gwen Wynne, who based it on her own life. Starring Tate Donovan and Adam Pascal as the couple, with Danielle Savre and Skye McCole Bartusiak as the daughters, it has also been a labour of love, as she was up against a reluctant establishment when it was first made, and although it enjoyed success on the festival circuit (under the title American Primitive), it has taken over a decade to get a proper cinema release. When I meet up with Gwen, she tells me that the story began even earlier.

First screened in 2009 under the title American Primitive, this very personal family story, based on writer/director Gwen Wynne’s own life, seems innocent and heart-warming today but was seriously challenging in its time, and focuses on a period where the controversy it addresses was still more so. It follows sisters Madeline (Danielle Savre) and Daisy (Skye McCole Bartusiak) as they move into a new home on Cape Cod with their father, the titular Harry (Tate Donovan). Having lost their mother, they are deeply uncomfortable about the idea of him getting into a new romantic relationship, and spend their time fending off would-be matchmakers, but life grows much more complicated when Madeline realises that in fact her father has already found a new love – his business partner, Mr Gibbs (Adam Pascal).

The sublime “Sunday” diner scene with the Broadway legends in Netflix’s “Tick Tick Boom” has become even more tear-inducing and meta with the recent passing of Stephen Sondheim, whose “Sunday in the Park with George” musical about French pointillist painter Georges Seurat started it all. First, through Jonathan Larson’s (Andrew Garfield) tribute song, “Sunday,” set in The Moondance Diner in SoHo, where he toils as a waiter and dreams of becoming the next Sondheim. Second, through “Tick Tick Boom” director Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ambitious, even miraculous, staging of the scene in a replica of the ’90s diner on a New York soundstage.
Miranda’s idea was to not only pay tribute to Larson’s heroes of Broadway but also to his own legacy, since he tragically died before the opening of “Rent” and was unable to witness its impact on the theater world. Thus, through strict protocols and safe distancing,...

Broadway, you might have heard, is back, and, miracle of miracles, it seems to have figured out how to present a truly excellent television awards show.
Splitting the traditional three hours into four and somehow coming up with the right math, Tony organizers, Paramount+ and CBS presented a two-hour livestreamed 74th Annual Tony Awards and, immediately following, the two-hour broadcast concert special The Tony Awards Present: Broadway’s Back!. The approach worked remarkably well. The no-nonsense presentation of award announcements and acceptance speeches was followed by a lively special that impressively showcased contemporary Broadway musicals on their home turfs and classic reunions that felt fresh and welcome.
Perhaps best of all, both portions of the evening were emceed by hosts who avoided entirely the tired combination of snark, smarm and insider smirk that has been de rigueur on the Oscars and Emmys for more than a decade now. Audra McDonald...

Daphne Rubin-Vega’s face may be on an “In the Heights” billboard on 41st Street in Times Square, but her son isn’t so impressed. “He is 16, so I am not the coolest person at all on the planet,” Rubin-Vega tells me. “I’m like, ‘Just so you know, I’m the most badass mom you could ever have.’ He just gives me this look and goes, ‘Yeah, well, next time try for 42nd Street.’ My family keeps me on my toes.”
Joking aside, Rubin-Vega appreciates what seeing a film about a Latino community could mean to aspiring Brown performers. She says she had few role models to aspire to. For example, she loved watching “The Sound of Music,” but Julie Andrews was “the last person” she thought of when dreaming of becoming an actor. “I just wanted to achieve that feeling — whatever that was that she was doing when...

Before there was Be More Chill, before there was Spring Awakening, before teens were swiping on purple eyeliner and lipsynching to Beetlejuice’s “Dead Mom” on TikTok, there was Rent. The iconic rock musical was a multicultural paean to the lives of impoverished musicians, filmmakers, philosopher-poets, kinksters, runaways, and junkies struggling to survive in the then-squalid Alphabet City area of Manhattan’s East Village, against the backdrop of the HIV/AIDS crisis.
Written by Jonathan Larson, who tragically died before Rent opened to widespread acclaim off-Broadway, the musical was revolutionary for not only depicting,...

Well, the next step in my declutteringdigitizing journey is throwing out my Chess CDs, not that they take up much space. I only have the Original Concept Recording and the Broadway cast. I'm going to download the freaking 2008 Royal Albert Hall concert version with Idina Menzel, Josh Groban and Adam Pascal to try to keep this column hip. But let's all just remember two things 1. I am not hip and, 2. I'm just downloading the concert for this column, so it doesn't really count as part of my digitizing.

Brennin Hunt has had a whirlwind weekend.
Hunt was set to play musician Roger Davis on Sunday in Fox’s live version of “Rent” — a role that he says “feels like home to me” because he, too, is a singer-songwriter and he knows what it feels like to try to write a powerful song. But the night before he was set to go live on that nationally televised stage, he broke his foot, which drastically changed plans for the telecast.
“What happened last night would not have happened if my foot had not been broken, and what happened last night was beautiful,” Hunt tells Variety. “It was the essence of ‘Rent,’ and I’m trying to stay as positive as possible and know maybe my foot broke for a reason.”

Fox’s “Rent” aired Sunday, decidedly not live. After male lead Brennin Hunt broke his foot during Saturday’s rehearsal, the network decided to air “previously recorded” footage from the day before during its planned 8-11 p.m. telecast, rather than have the cast perform the show as planned.
However, viewers in the studio audience were treated to an actually live version, with the stars performing numbers from the musical with a few changes to the set to accommodate Hunt’s wheelchair. Fox dubbed this the “cast concert version,” sharing several videos from the numbers that were performed live on Twitter later Sunday evening.
For those of you at home, the live TV musical began with “previously recorded” footage of Hunt, who plays the male lead Roger, taking the stage for a few numbers with his co-stars.

Tech glitches, broken bones, ghosts of stage productions past and, worst of all, live television’s unfortunate and intrusive vogue for giving studio audiences far, far too much screen time couldn’t do overmuch damage to Rent, Jonathan Larson’s beloved-by-many ’90s musical that added another chapter to both TV’s refound love of Broadway and the show’s own against-the-odds trouper legend.
In what turned out to be a fortuitous move, Fox had not been calling the new Rent anything other than that one-word title (early reports had it as Rent: Live!). Good thing: the show became more Rent: Somewhat Live! after star Brennin Hunt, who played struggling musician Roger, broke his foot during a dress rehearsal yesterday.
What aired on Fox tonight, as explained by the cast in an address to the television audience early in the proceedings, was mostly last night’s dress rehearsal, taped before a live audience,...

If you know one song from Rent, it’s “Seasons of Love.” And if you know two songs from Rent, the second is probably “One Song Glory.”
Roger’s bittersweet, evocative song — that doesn’t remind us of La Boheme‘s “Musetta’s Waltz” — comes relatively early in the musical, the first big number after the title song. But where “Rent” is rebelliously raucous, “One Song Glory” starts off quiet and contemplative as Roger tries to come to terms with the fact that he might not create anything artistically noteworthy before he dies.

Brennin Hunt, who was set to perform as Roger Davis in Fox’s live version of “Rent,” injured what was originally thought to be his ankle during the live dress rehearsal on Sat. 26. But, as they say, the show must go on.
Hunt posted a video in his Instagram story showing off his cast and confirming he broke his foot. The video showed one of the show’s costumers sewing him into a pair of pants that had to be customized to accommodate the cast. Hunt will be at the live event, although a source says they may have to use some pieces recorded from the Jan. 26 rehearsal for the broadcast given the nature of the physicality of his character’s choreography. Fox is introducing Jonathan Larson's iconic rock musical Rent to a whole new generation with a star-studded live production on Jan. 27. While this is far from the musical's first run with a new cast of actors, the network's previews of the upcoming production definitely have us feeling a little nostalgic and itching to look back at some of the older portrayals.
The musical originally opened up Off-Broadway in 1995 and made its way to Broadway the following year, before its massive appeal resulted in the 2005 film adaptation. The movie featured a handful of the original cast members, including Broadway darlings Idina Menzel, Anthony Rapp, and Adam Pascal. Take a trip back more than 10 years ago and check out who was who in the film's cast, as well as what they've been up to in the years since. Then, see how the new stars stack up against them!

Stay in the loop on industry and casting news with our write-up on who’s been slated for recent film and television roles! “Rent”Fox has 525,600 reasons to take on another live musical: the success of “Grease Live!” and its Easter-themed musical “The Passion” has caused the network to eye potential follow-ups. “Rent” follows a group of bohemian New Yorkers living in Alphabet City and working to enact social and political change at the turn of the 1990s. Riddled with the realities of drugs, HIV and AIDS, homelessness, and love, the show earned four Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize for drama. The lauded production drew the attention of Hollywood and, in 2005, became a movie musical with much of the original Broadway cast. Fox, however, is unlikely to call up any of those cast members—Idina Menzel, Tracie Thoms, Jesse L. Martin, Rosario Dawson, Anthony Rapp, or Adam Pascal—for its live rendition.
