As its title suggests, “Nothing to Laugh About” addresses a serious subject.
The Norwegian film, directed by Petter Næss, centers on a 40-year-old successful stand-up comedian whose entire life changes in one single day: not only is his show cancelled, but he splits up with his girlfriend and also has to deal with a devastating diagnosis from his doctor – bone cancer.
“Nothing to Laugh About” had its international premiere last week at the Zurich Film Festival, having earlier launched in cinemas in Norway in the number two spot behind “Dune.”
Rather than focus on the cancer aspect of the film, the festival’s program notes describe the film as a “charming, heart-warming and humorous story of a man who sets out to rediscover his laughter.”
And this is exactly the kind of film that Næss – best known for directing Norway’s 2002 Oscar entry “Elling” – set out to make.

“Let’s face it, we’re all going to die here.” Fresh from the Battle of Hogwarts, Daniel Radcliffe is battling The Woman in Black, while Rupert Grint soldiers on in the World War II drama, Into the White. Norwegian filmmaker Petter Næss, who helmed the phenomenal odd couple comedy Elling, directs this tense tale that is based on actual events. Rupert Grint, Florian Lukas, David Kross, Stig Henrik Hoff and Lachlan Nieboer stars as a group of pilots (some German some English), who — after being shot down — are forced to share an isolated shack to survive the frigid temperature of their Norwegian surroundings. It’s a premise that seems destined to end in much bloodshed. But according to its released synopsis, rather than turning on each others, these thrown together survivors begin to bond, forming a strong though unexpected brotherhood. While the trailer below seems a bit lackluster, I...

Look guys, as much as I hate World War II movies, I must admit that I’m touched by this one. Into The White is a project which comes from director Petter Næss and is definitely one of the most interesting stories I’ve heard lately. Think I’m crazy? Expected 3D excitement from me? Not this December… [...]

[1] After a decade spent watching the Harry Potter kids grow up before my eyes, their faces have come to feel almost as familiar to me as those of my actual friends and family. So it's been interesting but more than a little weird to look on over these past several months as each of them have gone on to tackle new, non-Potter parts. Daniel Radcliffe decided to go the horror story route with The Woman in Black, as we've seen [2], while Emma Watson returned to the big screen just this past weekend [3] in My Week with Marilyn. As for Rupert Grint, he's apparently chosen a World War II drama titled Into the White. I know, I had no idea either -- but now that I've seen the trailer, it doesn't look half bad! Watch it after the jump. Directed by Petter Næss, Into the White follows a group of English...

What happens when adversaries find themselves trapped inside a secluded cabin in the middle of a harsh Norwegian winter? Friendship, of course! Director Petter Næss’ “Into the White”, which stars Rupert Grint, Florian Lukas, and David Kross, looks solid enough, even though the core premise isn’t anything overwhelmingly original. Still, it’s nice to see Grint stepping out of his comfort zone for a change. The guy’s got talent to spare, so it’s nice to know he’s putting it to good use. I believe than an official synopsis is in order: English and German pilots shoot each other down, and later find themselves at the same cabin. In order to survive the tough winter in the Norwegian wilderness they have to stand together. It’s the start of a long and unlikely friendship. “Into the White” opens in Norway on March 9th,...

"May I introduce you to the beautiful Norwegian countryside!" Take a look at a trailer for a film I had never heard of until today, but looks pretty damn good, even compared to The Grey. It's called Into the White, directed by Norwegian Petter Næss, and is a WWII-set survival thriller. It stars an international cast lead by Rupert Grint, of Harry Potter fame, as well as Florian Lukas, David Kross, Stig Henrik Hoff and Lachlan Nieboer. It's about two groups of pilots from opposite sides who shoot each other down but must stay at the same cabin to survive. The trailer is mostly in English with some German, but it looks quite good. Watch the first official trailer for Petter Næss's Into the White, originally via Vlicious: English and German pilots shoot each other down, and later find themselves at the same cabin. In order to survive the...

The questions should be submitted by Sunday November 6, 2011 :-) Remember to include your name and country. As an extra treat today – we also have two Comrade related articles from Denmark and Norway respectively – and of course we want to share them with you :-) They are a good read until we can share some additional Comrade goodies with you. October 22nd, 2011, 12:24Pm– This past week, Rupert Grint was busy at the Adr studios in London recording his voice for his upcoming movie Comrade, along with Florian Lukas and Lachlan Nieboer. We have recently received word from the team behind the film that the soundtrack for Comrade will be composed by Nils Petter Molvær, who already worked with director Petter Næss in the past. In a recent article, he revealed this to Dagbladet.no: “I am in the process of doing the music for “Comrade”, the film which Petter Næss is making for the Norwegian department of Lars von Trier’s Zentropa. To make music for a film is a completely different way of thinking about music than what I normally do, I don’t use any trumpet, but a little guitar and a little piano, and the contrast between the two ways of working is something I like very much.

August 31st, 2011, 5:18Am– It is certainly an exciting time for Rupert Grint‘s new film, Comrade, directed by the Norwegian director, Petter Næss. The news seem to be coming in with a steady stream – and we are loving every minute of it. Since Comrade was introduced at the Norwegian International Film Festival, a new still from the film has surfaced. Yet again we get a sense of how dramatic the film will be – both in terms of visual images and the plot. It’s hard to tell whether or not Rupert himself is in the picture, but the picture is still definitely worth taking a look at :-) You can see a bigger version of the picture in the ever-expanding Comrade gallery here Continue reading →...

The film was a part of a category named New Nordic Films which highlights new and exciting projects from Scandinavian film makers. The category was presented between August 17 and 20. The purpose of this category is as follows: “The market is aimed towards international and Nordic distributors, TV buyers, festival programmers, sales agents, producers, directors and film organizations.” Sounds promising to have Comrade represented here :-) You can read much more about this exciting feature here. The aforementioned article reveals many new and exciting details about the film – and we get another great insight into Rupert’s character, Gunner Robert Smith. Rupert Grint has always been the comic relief when it comes to the Big Three actors in "Harry Potter," but with the final film opening in theaters Friday (July 15), he is ready to spread his wings and try out some new projects.
"Anything really different, really," Grint replied when MTV News asked him what his plans are next. "Playing the same character for 10 years really does give you this thirst for new things. I'm not sure I'm going to miss it. I am looking forward to this kind of newfound freedom. Just see where it takes me."
He certainly seems to be trying to get away from "Potter" as much as possible. Grint's next project is his anti-war film "Comrade," which began filming March 28 in Norway.
