“No, thank you”: HBO Shot itself in the Foot With a Stupid Condition That Cost Them The Walking Dead
Developed by Frank Darabont, who was also the showrunner on the first season, The Walking Dead is a post-apocalyptic zombie series. It is based on the comic book series by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. The show started in 2010, with an ensemble cast of Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Steven Yeun, among others, and ran for 11 seasons, concluding in 2022.

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.

From Children of the Living Dead to Zombi 2, the infamous copyright blunder that immediately placed Night of the Living Dead in the public domain means that unauthorized sequels to George A. Romero’s classic are a dime a dozen. However, despite these flicks usually being dismissed as cash-grabs attempting to ride the coattails of a better filmmaker, the fact is that every modern zombie movie is an inherent follow-up to the 1968 original in one way or another– the homemade sequels are simply more honest about it.
This is exactly why I was so interested in checking out Tubi’s low-budget love-letter to Romero, Festival of the Living Dead, as the film’s trailer revealed that the story wouldn’t be wasting time on re-introducing familiar zombie tropes and instead assumes that everyone (including the main characters) are aware of the events that went down on that fateful night back in ‘68. Plus,...

George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead is in the public domain, so a lot of people have made their own sequels and remakes to the film over the decades, put out their own releases of it, colorized it, animated it, etc. It’s a property that has never been dormant… but these days it seems like its undead ghouls are livelier than ever. The George A. Romero Foundation and the Cinedigm-backed Bloody Disgusting are making a podcast sequel called The Dead. Nikyatu Jusu is directing a film sequel that will be released by MGM. In 1992, comic book writer and artist Todd McFarlane created a new superhero character called Spawn. Five years later, director Mark A.Z. Dippé and screenwriter Alan B. McElroy brought Spawn to the screen in a PG-13 rated movie that didn’t go over well with a lot of fans. There were rumblings of a sequel for years after that, but nothing ever happened. Back around 2005, McFarlane announced he was going to make sure a new Spawn movie was going to be made, even if he had to produce, direct, and finance it himself. For nearly twenty years, he has been slowly pushing that project forward… but there is some level of hope that we might finally see the new Spawn sometime in 2025, so we figured we should put together a list of Everything We Know About the Spawn Reboot.

One of my all-time favorite movie quotes comes from David Arquette as Dewey Riley in Scream 2 when he says, “How do you know that my dimwitted inexperience isn’t merely a subtle form of manipulation, used to lower people’s expectations, thereby enhancing my ability to effectively maneuver within any given situation?”
There’s something about Land of Dead that just screams this quote at me. Pardon the pun. My point is that George A. Romero’s 2005 zombie return looks on the surface like any B-movie fly-by-night mid-2000s zombie fest. And it’s dressed that way on purpose. Those familiar with the subtle and effective way Romero was able to land haymakers in our faces without ever telegraphing as much as a jab will assume I’m talking about the socio-political nuances of the film. While true that Romero is a master at that, I will leave that to those smarter than myself.

‘Drag Me to Hell’ – New Australian Blu-ray Celebrates 15 Years of Sam Raimi’s Horror Return [Review]
Of all the masters of horror that helped to reshape the genre as we know it in the ’70s and ’80s, none were more successful in branching out and achieving commercial success within the studio system than Sam Raimi. His Spider-Man trilogy laid the groundwork for the influx of comic book movies that would follow, but he was eager to return to his roots following the third installment’s turbulent production.
Armed with $30 million and complete creative control, Raimi dusted off a story he wrote with elder brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi back in the ’90s to make his triumphant return to horror with Drag Me to Hell in 2009. The Raimi broters seemingly drew inspiration from 1957’s Night of the Demon but injected it with a heavy dose of Evil Dead DNA, most closely evoking Evil Dead 2‘s cartoonish blend of over-the-top splatter and tongue-in-cheek humor.

The return of two of The Walking Dead universe’s signature characters gave the latest spinoff in the franchise a ratings jolt.
The premiere of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live — which features the returns of Andrew Lincoln’s Rick and Danai Gurira’s Michonne — delivered 3 million viewers (inclusive of replays and simulcasts) over three days for AMC. That’s the best series debut performance on the cable network in almost six years (since The Terror in March 2018, which had the then-dominant Walking Dead flagship as a lead-in).
AMC doesn’t share data for its AMC+ streaming platform (in keeping with the m.o. for most streamers), but the company says The Ones Who Live premiere was the most watched episode of any show on the service. If you’ve been keeping up with The Test of Time, you have probably learned what the rules are in terms of what we tackle. Those rules, of course, are that there are no rules whatsoever and we cover whatever sounds good or we think would be an interesting topic. In the Mouth of Madness (watch it Here) came out in Italy in late 1994 and that means, gulp, that movie is now 30 years old. It came during an interesting time in the master of horrors career when he was running flop after flop and being disappointed by studios interference and stars that weren’t willing to be true collaborators. It’s the ending of a loose trilogy and in some people’s estimation his last great film. Is In the Mouth of Madness a tale that stands the Test of Time, or should it be put in the bargain bin...

Earlier today, we took a look back the Wes Craven-directed 2005 thriller Red Eye… so we figured, why not follow that up by taking a look at a remake of a Craven horror film that was released the year after Red Eye reached theatres? The movie we’re taking about is the 2006 version of The Hills Have Eyes (watch it Here), a remake of Craven’s 1977 classic. It’s time for this one to be revisited, and you can hear all about it in the embed above.
While the original film was written and directed by Craven, Alexandre Aja directed the remake from a screenplay he wrote with Grégory Levasseur. Here’s the synopsis: Bob Carter and his wife Ethel, along with five other members of the family, are heading for San Diego with their camper van. 2023 was a tumultuous year for television, but amid the turmoil was some standout horror programming that celebrates the genre’s versatility, from “The Fall of the House of Usher” to “Swarm.”
The television landscape grows increasingly proliferated as streaming services continue to spawn and transform like hordes of zombies. There have never been more places to consume content, which in itself can be both exciting and overwhelming for audiences. Horror has been warmly embraced by television and the prospect of a graphic genre program is no longer the gambit that it used to be. Programming from across the world collectively taps into the universal fears that get under the audience’s skin, many of which become even more intense through extended binge-watch sessions. There’s something for everyone when it comes to 2023’s eclectic horror series, whether it’s killer dolls in the White House, inspired reimaginings of Edgar Allan Poe,...

All the way back in 1982, Stephen King and the late great George A. Romero collaborated on the first Creepshow film, an anthology-based homage to the horror comic books of the 1950s. In the intervening years it has become a cult classic, a film remembered fondly by most. It is, even all these years later, still a wonderful movie. 2019 saw Creepshow return, but this time as an anthology television show that aired on the horror streaming platform, Shudder; and when that was announced I was immediately excited, being a big fan of Creepshow and Creepshow 2 for that matter (but the less said about aert three the better). Premiering on September 26th, the first season of Creepshow featured six episodes, with two separate tales to be found in each of those episodes.

For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and...

‘The Mist’ 4K Ultra HD Review – There’s a Reason We’re Still Talking About This Movie 16 Years Later
Stephen King adaptations have always been hit and miss. Before Mike Flanagan came along, there was one filmmaker who could always be trusted with King’s material: Frank Darabont, whose first foray into filmmaking was a short adaptation of “The Woman in the Room.” After making a name for himself as a screenwriter with the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob, Darabont made his feature directorial debut with 1994’s The Shawshank Redemption and followed it up with The Green Mile in 1999.
His thus-far final King adaptation came in 2007 with The Mist, which finds a group of locals trapped in a grocery store while an ominous fog shrouding mysterious secrets envelopes their quaint Maine town. A microcosm of any community, the supermarket is a canny setting for a contained thriller. The divisive mob mentality and pigheaded self-righteousness that manifests under pressure is even more poignant in a post-Trump world.

Grindhouse is one of the most influential box office failures of the 21st century. Despite grossing a paltry $25.4 million at the box office on a budget of around $60 million, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 love letter to exploitation cinema has managed to spawn four spin-off movies — Machete, Machete Kills, Hobo with a Shotgun, and now Thanksgiving— in addition to reintroducing a vintage aesthetic that has been mimicked by countless other throwback movies.
Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof each have their merits — the former plays like a satirical pastiche of nonstop action, while the latter is more indicative of genuine exploitation fare — but Grindhouse is more than just a double feature. It’s an experience, complete with faux aging to recreate the look of beat-up film prints along with vintage interstitials and retro-inspired trailers for nonexistent movies.

Being one of Stephen King‘s children, author Joe Hill has a connection to the Creepshow franchise that goes back to its very beginning – in fact, Hill was in the original, classic 1982 film (watch it Here) that was written by King and directed by George A. Romero. He’s the kid in the wraparound segments. Decades later, Hill’s stories By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain, Twittering from the Circus of the Dead, and Mums were brought to the screen in episodes of the Creepshow TV series on the Shudder streaming service. And now another one of his stories, Wolverton Station, is getting the Creepshow comic book treatment. The one shot comic book Creepshow: Joe Hill’s Wolverton Station is set to reach store shelves (and digital stores) on Wednesday, March 27th.

This year’s Rhode Island Comic Con guest list boasted big names like Anthony Daniels, Carl Weathers, Carrie-Anne Moss, Christina Ricci, Evangeline Lilly, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Linda Hamilton, and Marissa Tomei, to name a few, alongside hundreds of vendors and artists.
A highlight of the weekend was an intimate panel with legendary special effects artist-turned-director Greg Nicotero, who shared his reflections on The Walking Dead now that it has come to an end, in addition to insight from nearly 40 years in the industry.
Nicotero’s fascination with the horror genre stems from his childhood. “I grew up in Pittsburgh, and there was a TV show called Chiller Theater on every Saturday night. The Walking Dead spin-off The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (you can read our review Here) is set to continue with a second season that will focus on Daryl’s good friend Carol, played by Melissa McBride – and because of that, the second season has the ridiculous (and ridiculously long) title of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol. Thanks to a SAG interim agreement, the show was able to make its way through production while the actors strike was still going on… and now that the strike is over, Deadline has revealed that McBride is joined in the cast of the show by Manish Dayal.
Dayal just wrapped up a six season run on the Fox TV series The Resident. Some of his other credits include The Hundred-Foot Journey, Viceroy House, Holidate, Halt and Catch Fire, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The wait is finally over for Gun Interactive’s first batch of Dlc for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, which sees the release of the game’s first cosmetic packs. That includes a new Leatherface outfit pack that features a new mask design by Greg Nicotero, a new saw design and sound, and a new universal kill that can be equipped to any Leatherface.
As Gun Interactive’s Wes Keltner explained previously, this new skin does not come with new abilities for Leatherface. Instead, it adds a new aesthetic to those who play as Leatherface. “It’s the same as the Pretty Woman or Old Lady skins for the base Lf. However, we did give this Lf a new saw with new recordings. It’s a deeper, growling saw that can be heard and identified immediately before you even see Lf.”
Meanwhile, there are six other cosmetic packs for players to choose from.
