It’s not 1985 anymore… it’s 1986! And Chuck Steel is the maverick, lone wolf cop on the edge, who doesn’t play by the rules and must prevent the worst plague ever to hit Los Angeles – a scourge of deadly Trampires, mutant hybrids of vampires and bums.
Beginning life as a 2013 animated short, it has taken some time for this feature-length version of Chuck Steel’s adventures to finally make it into the hands of physical media collectors here in the UK, having previously screened at Frightfest way back in 2018, been on limited release in cinemas in 2021 And debuting on digital earlier this year… Was it worth the wait?
In a word (or two). Hell yes!

A sweary, ninja-smashing stop-motion cop takes on drunken creatures of the night, but his satirical tools aren’t sharp enough
If the animators of Aardman, the company behind Wallace and Gromit, gave up crumpets and custard creams, switched to an intravenous diet of raw steak and steroids, and were forced to watch trashy 80s movies 24/7 for a month, they might come up with something like Chuck Steel. This is a sweary, gleefully violent stop-motion animation directed by Mike Mort (whose credits include episodes of the Shaun the Sheep TV series). His action-hero creation is US cop Chuck Steel, a boorish knucklehead with a chin the size of a wheelbarrow. Set in the 80s, the film is a spoofy comedy lampooning the bad old days when it was Ok in a movie to call a woman “sugar tits” and use the R-word. But most of the humour comes from simply saying this stuff,...

"In a world gone mad..." Animortal Studio has dropped in a second official UK trailer for this extremely wild, badass stop-motion action horror film called Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires, written & directed by animator Mike Mort. It first premiered in 2018 at the Annecy Film Festival (where I saw it) and at the Sitges Film Festival, but has never been released since then. It's a full-on, R-rated, guts & gore, stop-motion 80s throwback. Set in 1986, the film follows a cop named "Chuck Steel", who must fight off forces of evil when a scourge of Trampires – a mutated hybrid of vampire and tramp – start to take over the city. The voice cast includes director Mike Mort as Chuck Steel, with Jennifer Saunders, Paul Whitehouse, Dan Russell, Jonnie Fiori, and Samantha Coughlan. I'm sooo happy this film is finally getting a UK release! I hope it shows up in the US soon. If...

This originally premiered in 2018 at the Annecy Film Festival (where I first saw it) and at the Sitges Film Festival, but has never been released since then. Which is a shame because this film rocks! It's not often that someone makes an R-rated animated movie. And when one does get made, they're usually not too good, either over-the-top or just nasty. Every once in a while, one comes along that totally blows the the lid off of everything and becomes a huge hit, shaking things up and proving there's an audience for this. Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires, directed by Michael Mort and made by an independent stop-motion studio in Wales called Animortal, is one of these insane movies that is sure to become an instant cult classic. We really haven't seen an all-out, R-rated animated movie packed with this much absurdity and ridiculous humor since Team America: World Police (in 2004!). Get ready for this one. Scratch that, there's nothing you can do to prepare yourself - except maybe watching Big Trouble in Little China on VHS before. Animortal's Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires is a stop-motion,...

I don’t think we’ve had a decent adult stop-motion/puppet movie since Hell and Back two years ago, so Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires is going to be filling one pretty big void. Directed by Michael Mort, the adult animated… Continue Reading →

Kite
Written by Brian Cox (no, not that one)
Directed by Ralph Ziman
USA/Mexico, 2014
Kite is hyperbolic in every sense imaginable. It’s hyper-stylized without reason, hyper-violent, and incredibly stupid. It’s also under-developed, though it masquerades having depth.
Sawa (India Eisley) is a teenage girl living in an unspecified post-apocalyptic city. Through opening text we’re told that the origins of the breakdown of society stem from a severe financial crisis, leaving the Numbers gang to roam the streets and profit on their sex trafficking of young girls. Sawa is driven by vengeance, as the leader of the Numbers, The Eram (played by the only actor who seems to be having fun in this film), murdered her parents. With help from her father’s ex-partner (Samuel L. Jackson playing… Samuel L. Jackson), she wreaks havoc on The Eram’s trade, killing low-level clientele and working scum. The gang...
