With the possible exception of food purchased in jam band parking lots, nothing pairs better with weed than a good film. It’s a substance that can make bad movies seem good and good movies seem downright incredible. Anyone who has attended a midnight screening of a cult classic knows that the thick haze of marijuana smoke is all part of the experience. And smoking a joint from the comfort of your own home while watching your favorite movie for the umpteenth time remains one of the most elite forms of relaxation known to man.
Certain films have a brilliance to them that can’t be truly understood until you watch them while indulging in your favorite strain of cannabis. Slightly dulling your focus in exchange for heightening your senses (including humor) is often a hell of a bargain. If a film doesn’t require excessive focus on a meticulous plot,...

Brian and Michael D’Addario, the brother duo known better as The Lemon Twigs, have today announced their upcoming fourth album Everything Harmony. Ahead of its release on May 5th via Captured Tracks, the band have also unveiled the single “Any Time of Day” as well as a run of 2023 tour dates.
Taking sonic inspiration from “the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, Arthur Russell, and Moondog,” The Lemon Twigs wrote, recorded, produced, and engineered Everything Harmony all by themselves between New York City and San Francisco. A press release describes the record as shifting “between moments of depression and isolation and episodes of dizzying euphoria.” Pre-orders are ongoing.
“Any Time of Day” especially lets joy and desperation co-mingle, its lyrics spurred by an unfortunate business/legal kerfuffle: “We were hired to write material and act in an interactive TV show about an imaginary ’70s brother band,” the band says in a statement.

“Can we go deep into the obscure, or do we need to stay mainstream?”
When Matt Groening asks that question, the invitation is tantalizing to consider. In this case, Groening is talking about jazz, and specifically about his new partnership with Quincy Jones’ music-video hub, Qwest TV. His mission for Qwest was a curated video playlist revealing the jazz influences crucial to Groening — personally, professionally and to “The Simpsons,” most famously in sax-playing characters such as Bleeding Gums Murphy and Homer’s precocious daughter, Lisa Simpson.
Jones’ streaming channel offers a wealth of rarely seen concerts, documentaries, interviews and music-related archival films. Groening’s playlist ranges from “mainstream” names such as Ray Charles, Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus to the “avant-garde” likes of saxophonists Moondog and Archie Shepp and pianist Carla Bley.

From Wooderson to Moondog and every laid-back character (and real-life moment) in between, Matthew McConaughey has vast experience and the wisdom gained from it. And he’d like to share. The actor has officially launched a YouTube channel, because…well, why not?
“I want to welcome you to my YouTube channel,” the actor said in his launch video, which he posted to Twitter Monday evening. “It’s a destination where I’m going to share who I am, who I’m not, what I believe in, what I don’t, what I’m doing, what I’m not doing, along with some approaches to life that I’ve found useful and constructive along the way.”

Contrary to her movie’s title, the protagonist in “Feral” hardly fits any indigent stereotype: She’s young, attractive, kempt, modishly dressed, in fact by all appearances rather closer to the cliché of the college-educated, gentrifying if still “quirky” Brooklyn hipster. No one would guess that Annapurna Sriram’s Yasmine is homeless, a deceiving appearance that’s one of the few things she has left to turn to her advantage.
This first narrative feature by cinematographer and documentarian Andrew Wonder is an intriguingly offbeat character sketch that falls somewhere short of a fully-rounded portrait. Nonetheless, his arresting subject matter and refined aesthetic make for a promising debut worthy of discerning viewers’ attention. After a year’s festival-circuit travel, it’s getting a VOD release on June 2.

The Beach Bum is directed by independent auteur filmmaker Harmony Korine and his first feature film in a seven-year interval after his critically abolished but cult classic feature Spring Breakers, that gave the filmmaker a second wind of sorts after a decade of influence in the 90s with Kids, Gummo and Julien Donkey-Boy. His latest – structurally speaking – is a complete disaster but this a Harmony Korine film and the truly outlandish provocative nature is superbly chaotic and downright outrageously infectious. Matthew McConaughey is insufferable as a stoner poet in Korine’s awful non-comedy, which also features Isla Fisher, Snoop Dogg, Jonah Hill and Zac Efron
If you can imagine Matthew McConaughey doing a very, very creepy and rubbish version of the Dude from The Big Lebowski … well go ahead and imagine it if you want. However disagreeable an experience that would be, it could at least be over in a few seconds – less painful than seeing him do it for real over 97 minutes in this terrible film.
Writer-director Harmony Korine achieves a Zen state of unfunny with this pointless non-comedy, featuring McConaughey on insufferable form as a stoner and wild-man force of nature named Moondog who has neglected his vocation as a poet and is now just coasting on his charisma and big-dick energy – and the fact that he doesn’t need to worry about money because his wife Minnie (Isla Fisher) is very rich.

20th Century Women (Mike Mills)
That emotional profundity most directors try to build to across an entire film? Mike Mills achieves it in every scene of 20th Century Women. There’s such a debilitating warmness to both the vibrant aesthetic and construction of its dynamic characters as Mills quickly soothes one into his story that you’re all the more caught off-guard as the flurry of emotional wallops are presented. Without ever hitting a tonal misstep, Mills’ latest feature takes place in a short period of time within relatively few locations, yet seems to pick up every wavelength of the human experience. Matthew McConaughey is surprisingly flexible for such an inimitable actor; he can play anybody, and yet there’s no one else quite like him. He’s been a Hollywood leading man for more than 20 years — starring in adventure movies, sci-fi epics, stripper masterpieces, a smattering of mostly regrettable rom-coms, and more — but he’s never really settled into a type. He can do it all, but the easygoing Austin native is at his best when it seems like he’s just being himself. In an industry that swallows actors whole and spits them out on the regular, McConaughey has survived by embracing a “just keep livin’” philosophy that makes you feel like he’s just happy to be here. And if his shaggy, self-possessed, and almost supernaturally high portrayal of Moondog in “The Beach Bum” feels like McConaughey’s defining performance, that’s because it barely seems like he’s acting at all.

If your favorite Matthew Mcconaughey mood is of the naked bongo drumming variety, then Harmony Korine has made just the movie for you. In The Beach Bum Mcconaughey is Moondog, a rebellious rogue living outside society in Florida doing exactly what he wants, whenever he wants it, and all the while high as a kite. He’s nice, benevolent, kind, mostly peaceful, accepting of all and of their foibles. He believes in true love and practices it (straight of course but not adverse to a bit of cross dressing). Even when he finds out his wife (Isla Fisher) is also sleeping with other people, it takes him literally only a minute to go from surprise to complete acceptance.
The plot -if we can call it that - is to follow Moondog along his travels in Key West and Miami...

Zac Efron looked all sorts of sexy when he attended the La premiere of The Beach Bum on Thursday night. The 31-year-old actor sported his now-signature platinum-blond hair and cut a suave figure in a blue suit. Ok, Zac, we see you! Chicago – The beach life is the paradise that most Americans aspire to, and either get it when they’re not ready or when they’re too old. The off-kilter director Harmony Korine (Spring Breakers) presupposes all of the life through Matthew McConaughey, in an incredible tour de farce called, appropriately, “The Beach Bum.”
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Most people believe that this is how McConaughey actually lives (or lived) this life, so with perfect casting energy Korine lets the “all right all right all right” guy take the beach ball and run with it. Snoop Dogg did his best to make sure Matthew McConaughey‘s weed smoking in The Beach Bum was as authentic as possible — even if that meant the actor spent half a day uttering nonsense.

McConaughey, who payed the titular beach bum named Moondog in the process, was pretty surprised by the switch. He thought he was smoking joints stuffed with oregano.

Director Harmony Korine may have been wastin’ away again in Margaritaville when he came up with the idea for “The Beach Bum.”
According to Jimmy Buffett, his songs “Margaritaville” and “A Pirate Looks at Forty” inspired the stoner comedy, and his friendship with Korine landed him a role in the film.
“He was telling me about the whole thing and that it was based on some songs I had written,” Buffett told Variety at the film’s premiere at the ArcLight Hollywood on Thursday. “It was a bigger part than I really thought I was capable of doing. He said, ‘If I ever get it done, would you consider being in it?’ and I said, ‘Sure I will.’ I was already on board, and when he told me who was coming on board, it just made the whole ride even more fun.”

Who wants some free weed? Alright, alright, alright. Jimmy Kimmel Live! sent Matthew McConaughey to Hollywood Boulevard in disguise as his blond stoner character Moondog from the upcoming movie The Beach Bum, co-starring Snoop Dogg. There, he pranked some innocent pedestrians into trying and coming into contact with some cannabis-infused edibles and other products. The catch? They weren't actually infused with anything. However, the placebo effect was strong with this group. "Now before you try one of these, I gotta tell you...in five to six seconds, you're gonna feel it," he told one girl. "So this is called a pot dog. Now in these fresh tomatoes, I've infused a...

Some people can be real buzzkills. Matthew McConaughey is the opposite — he’s all about creating a buzz where there’s really none to be had.
At least that was the case during a segment on Thursday night’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
During the segment, McConaughey, dressed as his character Moondog from his new film “The Beach Bum,” took to Hollywood Boulevard to offer passersby a variety of marijuana-infused products.

Spoiler alert: There was no marijuana in said items.
Still, that didn’t stop some marks from feeling — or at least pretending that they were feeling — high after sampling McConaughey/Moondog’s faux weed products.
Such as the woman who tried out McConaughey’s “pot dog” — supposedly containing tomatoes and mustard infused with Thc.

“He may be a jerk, but he’s a great man. He’s brilliant,” says Heather (Stefania Lavie Owen), the neglected daughter of Moondog (Matthew McConaughey), in “The Beach Bum,” Harmony Korine’s latest exploration of charismatic and hedonistic human disasters. Heather’s father is an acclaimed poet, his artistic genius seemingly on the wane, who lives in South Florida like Hunter S. Thompson if he were a character in Korine’s fractured comedy about middle-American weirdness, “Trash Humpers.”
That Moondog isn’t trying to have sex with garbage cans and mailboxes would seem more a case of it having slipped his drug-addled mind, rather than a distaste for the practice itself. Moondog is also quite rich, much like James Franco’s character in Korine’s “Spring Breakers,” thanks to having married money in the form of the sexually voracious Minnie (Isla Fisher), whose emotional and physical adoration of her...

Matthew McConaughey drinks, smokes, has sex, and that’s about it in The Beach Bum.
It’s been a minute since the McConaissance came around and brought us excellent Matthew McConaughey movies like The Lincoln Lawyer, Dallas Buyers Club and Mud, and in the years since we’ve seen something of a McContraction, with stinkers like The Sea of Trees, Gold, The Dark Tower, and this year’s Serenity slinking in and out of theaters faster than one could drawl, “All right, all right, all right.” Does The Beach Bum, McConaughey’s new collaboration with indie maverick filmmaker Harmony Korine, signal the return of the former or the continuation of the latter? It’s hard to say.
One thing is for sure though: McConaughey leaves it all on the field in the movie, a languid comedy about a man named Moondog whose one-time fame as a writer and whose wife...

Maybe you remember what happened to Matthew McConaughey back in 1999. The actor had graduated to Hollywood A-list status by this point; he’d also developed a deserved reputation for enjoying a good time off the set. So the cops get a call from his neighbors, complaining about a loud ruckus-in-progress happening at our man’s home. Long story short, they arrive to find the movie star possibly under the influence of a substance or three, extremely naked and enthusiastically playing the bongos.

The latest opus of debauchery from the great Harmony Korine, The Beach Bum continues his more playful streak, full of carefree possibilities while existing in roughly the same cinematic universe of his previous film Spring Breakers. While James Franco’s Alien hustled hard for that paper, Matthew McConaughey’s Moondog inherited his wealth from wife Minnie (Isla Fisher). Moondog, an aspiring writer, lives large without a care in the world on his borrowed Southern Florida yacht. His days consist of getting high, drinking, and having trysts in random places including a kitchen of a local beach sidebar that’s played for laughs.
Existing in the same heightened reality of his 2012 hit, Korine gleefully adapts and upscales the Idgaf tone of his previous works including Kids, the Larry Clark feature Korine wrote at age 22, and Gummo. The Beach Bum has the feeling of a director who has essentially semi-retired and gone south,...

In recent years, the SXSW Film Festival has grown in stature to become a key launchpad for many kinds of movies — anticipated studio comedies, edgy documentaries, and low-budget narrative features have all found taken flight at the Austin gathering. The addition of television series has further complicated SXSW’s profile, to the point where both media receive nearly the same level of attention.
The 2019 edition was an especially fertile example, as Jordan Peele’s horror sensation “Us” kicked off the proceedings with a level of enthusiasm that remained in place in the days ahead, with many other crowdpleasing movies and television shows. Setting aside the obvious, here are some of the biggest highlights.

How can you tell when a movie star is committed to being taken seriously? It’s hard to ignore when someone like Matthew McConaughey drops a ton of weight, the way he did to play an emaciated HIV patient in “Dallas Buyers Club.” It’s also impressive when such an actor swings hard in the opposite direction, packing on the pounds, thinning out his hair, and masking his prom-king choppers with a set of crooked veneers, as McConaughey did for “Gold.” Stunts like that have forced audiences to reevaluate him as more than just a superficially handsome stud.
In Harmony Korine’s “The Beach Bum,” disguised beneath stringy Hulk Hogan-style hair, cheap flip-up baseball shades, and an ugly yellow snaggletooth, McConaughey shows the same kind of commitment in the role of Moondog — pot head and unofficial poet laureate of the Florida Keys — only this time, he’s unlikely to command the same respect.

Harmony Korine’s latest, The Beach Bum, which time travels the stoner comedy ethos of ’70s Cheech and Chong to the upscale mansions and beer-soaked boardwalk of contemporary Miami Beach, is sure to be a SXSW standout this year. Matthew McConaughey is living life by his own rules in Harmony Korine’s The Beach Bum.
In a People exclusive clip from the wild comedy, the 49-year-old actor is unrecognizable as the titular beach bum, Moondog.
The comedy also stars Isla Fisher as Minnie, Moondog’s wife, and Snoop Dogg as Lingerie, Moondog’s friend. In the movie, Moondog has taken to living in the Florida Keys, while his wife and daughter, Heather (Stefania Lavie Owen), live in Miami.
The scene finds Moondog calling up Minnie to discuss Heather’s upcoming wedding.

Matthew McConaughey stars as a long-haired, trouble-making, bong-smoking poet named Moondog in The Beach Bum from writer-director Harmony Korine. The comedy is the filmmaker’s first movie since 2012’s Florida-set Spring Breakers.

We’ve got a new red-band trailer here for you to watch for Matthew McConaughey’s new film The Beach Bum. The movie follows the outrageous misadventures of Moondog, “a rebellious burnout who only knows how to live life by his own rules.”
The movie comes from director Harmony Korine. This looks like it’s going to be another wild and crazy film from the director. Korine tends to make films that are uncomfortable to watch, this latest one looks like it will be his most tame movie.
McConaughey will be joined by a great supporting cast that includes Zac Efron as Flicker, who is just one of the many characters that Moondog meets on his wild journey. The film also stars Snoop Dogg, Isla Fisher, Stefania Lavie Owen, Jimmy Buffett, Martin Lawrence, and Jonah Hill.
The Beach Bum will hit theaters on March 22, 2019.

Matthew McConaughey takes on new levels of drug use in the latest trailer for “The Beach Bum.”
True to the film’s title, the trailer opens on a trashy beach town stage where McConaughey’s character Moondog is waiting to accept some sort of musical award.
“Before I accept whatever award it is they’re giving me today, I want to start off with a little poetic foreplay,” he says to a crowd of waiting beachgoers. “One day I will swallow the world, and when I do I hope you all perish violently.”
A neon montage of drug use and drunken antics is next, highlighting Moondog’s poor decision making alongside the film’s high-profile cast. In between clips of coke lines and weed trees, Moondog plays golf with Jonah Hill, kisses Isla Fisher, and wanders the streets at night with Zac Efron. Here are just a few things that happen in the new red-band trailer for “The Beach Bum”: Matthew McConaughey steps out of a jacuzzi in a very revealing thong, an old man with glaucoma in both his eyes flies a plane while smoking the biggest joint you’ve ever seen, and Martin Lawrence feeds cocaine to a parrot.
That all sounds about right for a Harmony Korine movie, who is directing McConaughey in his follow-up to “Spring Breakers.” In the film, McConaughey plays a novelist and a rebellious stoner named Moondog who, after going on a particularly bad bender, finds himself arrested and forced to reform.
Oh, and he also promises to host a gang bang as soon as he finishes writing that Great American Novel. He’ll invite your mother, too.

Seven years after unleashing “Spring Breakers” on the world, Harmony Korine is finally ready to release his follow-up directorial effort. Enter “The Beach Bum,” an extremely loose new comedy starring Matthew McConaughey as a Miami poet and stoner who embarks on a shenanigan-fueled journey of self-discovery.
“Spring Breakers” starred James Franco as an idiosyncratic drug dealer named Alien, a character that has gone on to become a touchstone of the stoner movie genre. "It all stops now - the foolishness. And if you mess this up, it's jail time." Light that blunt and get ready, this looks like the ultimate stoner flick. Neon has debuted the second official red band trailer for Harmony Korine's latest film The Beach Bum, a spiritual sequel to Spring Breakers. And it looks just as crazy, if not even crazier, than that movie. The Beach Bum stars Matthew McConaughey as a rebellious stoner named Moondog who lives life by his own rules. McConaughey looks totally, totally wild in this, but the rest of the cast looks wacky insane too: Snoop Dogg, Isla Fisher, Stefania Lavie Owen, Martin Lawrence, Zac Efron, Jonah Hill. I don't even know what the plot is, everyone in this just seems stoned or totally weird or crazy, but that might be exactly why this is going to be a trippy experience unlike any other.
