Tipping their Stetsons to a passel of 1960s Spaghetti Westerns — everything from “A Fistful of Dollars” to “They Call Me Trinity” — and the sort of 1970s Blaxploitation oaters that once provided steady employment for Fred Williamson, director-star Michael Jai White and co-star (and co-writer) Byron Keith Minns have cobbled together “Outlaw Johnny Black,” a fitfully funny but uncomfortably overlong entertainment best appreciated by movie buffs who share the pair’s affection for the genre tropes and stereotypes they seriocomically recycle.
Not nearly as free-wheeling and fleet-footed as “Black Dynamite,” the 2009 satirical comedy that cast White as a Shaft-like action hero, the new film nonetheless provides more than a few good laughs, even when it seems to be taking horse opera clichés a tad too respectfully, and showcases a fine cast of actors dedicated to both the silliness and the seriousness of the enterprise.

In January 2009, during a midnight screening at Sundance, Michael Jai White knew he had something special in Black Dynamite. Nine months later, the Blaxploitation spoof’s limited theatrical release and minimal box office gross didn’t stop its immediate fate as a cult classic. Demand for a sequel soon followed, and so White, as co-writer of the film, penned a direct sequel that struggled to get off the ground due to creative differences with a producer.
Consequently, White went back to the drawing board and pursued an idea he had at the same time as Black Dynamite’s conception. If that action-comedy paid homage to Blaxploitation films through parody, then it would only make sense to take a similar approach with other genres. So, White revisited his earlier ideas for three other genre exercises including a horror movie, a kung fu movie and a Western. That Western is now known as Outlaw Johnny Black,...

What would Hollywood be without a good ole Blaxploitation film? And now that “They Cloned Tyrone” has hit Netflix screens, conversations about the Blaxploitation movies that crawled so that “They Cloned Tyrone” could pimp walk have come to the forefront.
Juel Taylor’s film welcomes watchers to The Glen, a normal, everyday neighborhood where its predominately Black residents live out their lives shopping, going to church and enjoying the fruits of their labor. However, beneath the surface, but right in front of their eyes, the government is executing a plot to keep the community in an endless cycle of unhealthy behavior that ultimately blocks them from mental and financial wellness.
Like many Blaxploitation films, “They Cloned Tyrone” creatively calls out and highlights the systemic issues Black community faces while also celebrating Black culture and Black people’s perseverance.

From its humble beginnings to the cult mini-phenomenon it’s become, the trajectory of “Black Dynamite” as an intellectual property is hardly what anyone could’ve predicted. What started as a two minute passion project trailer shot on studio lots by actors Michael Jai White and Byron Minns and director Scott Sanders eventually grew into an 80 minute thesis on the art of blaxploitation filmmaking that both celebrated and lampooned the subgenre. It probably would’ve been just as funny if Jai White, Minns, Sanders, and company merely cracked jokes at the genre’s expense, but a genuine understanding and awareness of the mechanics (read: limitations) of exploitation filmmaking in general and...

Carl Jones, who created the animated version of Black Dynamite and The Boondocks, not only defends the controversial Blaxploitation film genre of the 70s – but also humorously the role of the black pimp.
Carl Jones On Blaxploitation, Pimps
Jones is of the mindset that something is better than nothing; a pimp for a black male hero is better than no black hero at all. “There are so many great things that came out of [Blaxploitation] films and that era. It was maybe the first time that we saw black heroes on screen,” Jones told uInterview exclusively. “In a lot of ways if you look at it under the right scope, you’ll see pimps were probably the first iteration of black men in America. They were businessmen. They were entrepreneurs. You’ll see that they took a bad situation and turned it into good. Morally, you can argue or debate what’s right or wrong.

Carl Jones, creator of the animated version of Black Dynamite and The Boondocks, thinks that blaxploitation, the film genre that was popularized in the 1970s, should be celebrated not maligned. Most of the main protagonists in the films were actually pimps, which inspired the concept of Black Dynamite. “In a lot of ways if you look at it under the right scope, you’ll see pimps were probably the first iteration of black men—in America,” Jones told uInterview. Byron Minns, who voices the character Bullhorn on Dynamite, jokes that Jones is “glorifying pimping.”

Remakes, sequels, reboots: these are common parlance in the film industry today and have been since its birth, really. There is no film property immune to this, especially a successful one. And though the blaxploitation genre, which reached its height of popularity in the 1970s, still enjoys a rabid cult following, few of the attempts to re-energize this vital branch of American film have been very successful.
Until now.
Black Dynamite, the 2009 film starring Michael Jai White, is now also an animated series now airing Sundays on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. And while the character and his world may still effectively be a cult happening, it is clear that Black Dynamite is the most successful blaxploitation property to hit the streets since platform shoes went out of fashion. Loaded with sex, violence, and sex and violence, Black Dynamite is the true sequel to Shaft that fans have been waiting for.

Check out the highlights from our roundtable interviews with director Jones and "Black Dynamite: The Animated Series" stars White, Davidson, Jones and Whitley below, and make sure to catch the show when it airs on Adult Swim on Sunday nights at 11:30 pm Et/Pt.

Based on the 2009 cult film of the same name, the half-hour series revives its title character, an ex-cia agent-turned-crusader for justice who fights against kung-fu masters, drug-dealing pimps, and “the man.” Unlike the movie, the series doesn’t mock or mimic the shoddy production values of 70s Blaxploitation films, opting instead for a sleeker animated look and feel. Still, it features a lot of the same elements, including racy imagery and...

The Comic-Con 2012 schedule has now been released in full, and barring any major updates, is set. The blessing and curse of being an attendee is deciding which panels/autograph sessions/special events to attend, when they conflict. And they always do.
For you to see for yourself, below are what we are calling the “headliner” panels; those panels that are taking place in Hall H, Ballroom 20, Room 6Bdf, and the just-next-door Hilton Indigo Ballroom, the four major venues for panels. There are descriptions of each panel as well as the show(s) and/or movie(s) they are there to discuss.
See how many conflicts you might have, or how you might arrange time and space to somehow attend these plus spend every day in the vendors’ Exhibit Hall and chasing zombies in the nearby The Walking Dead Escape. By the way, if you figure that out, Please let us know.

Adult Swim has released an awesome trailer for the animated series adaptation of the 2009 blaxpoitation spoof Black Dynamite. The story follows the crazy action-packed and sexy adventures of a former CIA agent and Vietnam vet battling The Man.
You'll be happy to know that the series was developed by the same creative team that made the movie. It was written and directed by Scott Sanders, and stars Michael Jai White, Byron Minns, Tommy Davidson, and Kym Whitley, who all reprise their roles as Black Dynamite, Bullhorn, Cream Corn, and Honeybee. The newer voice cast additions include Corey Burton, J. B. Smoove and Clifton Powell.
The show looks incredibly entertaining, and it's loaded with comedy, racial commentary, and fun, spoofy humor. If you enjoyed the movie, chances are you're going to love this show. As you'll see in the trailer, the creative team really had some fun developing it.
Black Dynamite premieres July 15 at 11:30 p.

If you’ve seen a handful of movies in the last 20 years, chances are you’ve seen one starring Luis Guzman. Although he’s never been Hollywood’s leading man, he’s had various roles in some high profile movies over the years — any number of P.T. Anderson movies, Traffic and the TV series Oz, come to mind. And now, Deadline reports that he will be leading the new action comedy Aztec Warrior.
He will be playing the warrior in the “Lucha Libre-inspired picture who goes up against his rival El Diablo”, who will be played be Mexican comedian Eugenio Derbez. Terry Crews, Nadine Velazquez and Lupe Ontiveros (Desperate Housewives) are among the supporting cast. Scott Sanders, who directed the blaxploitation-esque picture Black Dynamite back in 2010, co-wrote the script with Don Handfield and will also be directing the project.

Blaxploitation spoof "Black Dynamite" is getting an animated TV adaptation. The 2009 film, which was directed by Scott Sanders and had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, stars Michael Jai White as the title character, a Vietnam vet and former CIA agent who dedicates himself to battling drug dealers after the death of his younger brother. "Black Dynamite," the movie, meticulously recreated the look of an artifact from the era, shot on Super 16 Color Reversal Kodak stock with deliberate flubs like a boom mic appearing in the frame. The trailer below, which declares its hero to be "sticking it to the man as only he can," has a slicker look -- the series is from the same production team behind "The Boondocks." White voices his role from the film, with Byron Minns, Tommy Davidson and Kym Whitley also returning. "Black Dynamite" premieres on Adult Swim Sunday, July 15th at 11:30pm.

While we wait to see if that big screen "Black Dynamite" sequel ever happens (Michael Jai White told us it would shoot at the end of the year), blaxploitation spoof fans won't have to wait long to get more as the animated series premieres in just a few weeks, and a trailer has arrived to give you a taste.
Reuniting the cast of the film including White voicing the lead role with Tommy Davidson (Cream Corn), Arsenio Hall (Tasty Freeze), Kym Whitley (Honeybee), and Byron Minns (Bullhorn) all lending their skills, it's safe to say that this doesn't rock the formula too much. And why should it? It looks appropriately over the top and ridiculous with enough oversized guns and dicks for a "Magic Mike" sequel. But most of all, the humor seems to have crossed over just fine, and there are a couple of ace one liners in this one minute clip.

Independent distributer Second Sight is re-releasing two cult Afro-American urban films, Juice and South Central this Monday. As both films deal with similar subject and were released in the same year, a joint review seemed appropriate. Both films are about young black Americans struggling to beat the cycle of violence that threatens their lives and their cultures.

The film follows a group of four school-skipping friends in Harlem, all of whom are fairly dopey, huggable hip-hoppers, rather than violent gang-bangers. I have done some fucked up things to you people over the years. Some really cruel, unkind shit. And for that, I am not even a little bit sorry. However, on this day, I've decided to give you a gift.
Here it is, the pilot episode for Adult Swim's animated television series based on the brilliant cult film character. Most of the film's stars are returning for the series, including Michael Jai White, Byron Minns, Tommy Davidson and Kym Whitley. Kiddies, I give you Episode One of "Black Dynamite."
Not that I should need to tell you, but it's a bit Nsfw.

If you happen to be a fan of Scott Sanders' 2009 blaxploitation send-up Black Dynamite and you were hoping to one day see a sequel, you'll be happy to hear that further adventures of the badass former CIA agent are on the way. They won't be coming to the big screen, however... instead, Adult Swim is producing a Black Dynamite animated series that is due to premiere sometime next year. Michael Jai White, Byron Minns, Kym Whitley and Tommy Davidson all return to provide voices with Carl Jones and Brian Ash (The Boondocks) on board as writers. The pilot episode can now be watched in its entirety online for free, and it looks like it should make a great addition to the Adult Swim line-up. I'm not entirely convinced that most of the obvious jokes won't eventually get run into the ground, but as a pilot episode I thought it was pretty strong.

As a spooftastic blaxploitation flick, the 2009 movie Black Dynamite hit us in all the right places. Thankfully, we'll be getting more of the eponymous hero via a new animated series.
We attended the Black Dynamite panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2011 to get a sneak peek at the new show and hear from the stars of the 2009 film: Michael Jai White, Tommy Davidson, Kym Whitley and Byron Minns, all of whom will be contributing voices to the animated version. Here's what we learned:

White said he had the idea for the character while filming Undisputed 2 in Bulgaria and listening to James Brown's "Superbad." He came home, did a photo shoot and showed it to Sanders, who was instantly hooked. While Black Dynamite is a meta-movie, about making the movie Black Dynamite,...
