It seems there's a new portmanteau of an actor's name and the word "renaissance" cropping up all the time. In the early 2010s, we had the "McConaissance" and now Oscar winner Brendan Fraser is enjoying his own "Brenaissance." Michael Keaton, however, escaped the dreaded portmanteau when he re-ascended to superstar status with 2014's "Birdman." And he's since maintained that status with memorable turns in everything from the Oscar-winning "Spotlight" to Hulu's excellent chronicle of the opioid epidemic "Dopesick" — even debuting in the MCU as Vulture in "Spider-Man: Homecoming."
Soon, Keaton will be returning as Batman in "The Flash," some 30 years after walking away from the role. He's also gearing up for his directorial debut with "Knox Goes Away", which means that the 71-year-old is still a very busy man.

The Nancy Meyers movie that recently fell apart at Netflix over budget issues may be revived at Warner Bros.
After being set up at Netflix for over a year, Meyers’ long-awaited return to the director’s chair began to fall apart last week over disagreements about the budget. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Warners, attracted to the idea of a ready-made hot project with an A-list cast and possible summer start date, may be stepping in to pick it up. Exploratory talks are underway, according to several sources.
Scarlett Johansson was attached to play the lead role in Meyers’ feature, with Penélope Cruz, Owen Wilson and Michael Fassbender also eying the project. Meyers will write, direct and produce the comedy, which is currently known as Paris Paramount, although it is not clear if that’s the actual title, a working title or a code name.

Nancy Meyers’ return to the director’s chair is getting underway.
After not directing a movie since 2015’s The Intern, the filmmaker known for her upscale romantic comedies is back with a project that is attracting A-list talent. Scarlett Johansson is circling the lead role in Meyers’ upcoming feature for Netflix, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter, with Penélope Cruz, Owen Wilson and Michael Fassbender also eying the project.
Netflix had no comment.
Meyers will write, direct and produce the comedy, which is currently known as Paris Paramount, although it is not clear if that’s the actual title, a working title or a code name.
Sources say the story centers on a talented young writer-director who falls in love with a producer, with the pair making several successful films before calling it quits romantically and professionally. The two are forced back together, however, when a great new project arises,...

Michael Keaton is not only returning to his iconic role as Batman in the upcoming The Flash, now Deadline is reporting that Keaton is going back to his comedic roots in a similar role that got Batman purists to literally protest his initial casting in the first place. Keaton’s reputation for being a goofball in silly comedies such as Mr. Mom initially led fans to think his being placed in the Batman role meant that the studio was not taking the property seriously. How wrong they were!

The film stars Kate Winslet as Iris, a British newspaper columnist, and Cameron Diaz as Amanda, an American woman who makes movie trailers. Both of them are unlucky in love and desperate for an escape, so they swap houses to spend Christmas in sunny Los Angeles and snowy England, respectively. Iris falls for Amanda's coworker, played by Jack Black, and Amanda falls for Iris's brother, a single dad with a heart of gold, played by Jude Law. Everyone is happily coupled up on New Year's Eve at the end of the film.
On Dec. 6, The Sun reported that all four of the movie's leads had signed on for a sequel, but we have bad news. Winslet's reps confirmed to Popsugar that the sequel isn't happening.

Nancy Meyers, the highest-grossing female writer-director-producer in Hollywood’s box office history, will be the recipient of the WGA West’s 2020 Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement.
Diane Keaton, who starred in Meyers’ 2003 film Something’s Gotta Give, will present the award at the 72nd annual Writers Guild Awards ceremony on February 1 in Los Angeles. The award is presented to guild members who have “advanced the literature of motion pictures and made outstanding contributions to the profession of the screenwriter.”
“Nancy Meyers is the writer many of us aspire to be – her scripts walk the line of blending challenging ideas with comedic situations, dramatic themes with hard jokes,” said WGA West president David A. Goodman. “Her work consistently proves that movies about the foibles and frailties of humans will be commercially successful in the hands of a master of her craft. The Wgaw Board of Directors is thrilled to give her this award.

Mindy Kaling and Nancy Meyers — two titans of romantic comedies and layered, human storytelling overall — gathered Saturday in a wide-ranging conversation about their experiences as filmmakers in a changing market.
At Produced By, the annual conference of the Producers Guild of America, the pair had an hour to share a wealth of information about their respective tastes, challenges, budgets, marketing strategies and more.
The chat was timely, thanks to Kaling’s Amazon Studios comedy “Late Night” hitting this weekend, but served as a fantastic excuse for an audience on Burbank’s Warner Bros. lot to overhear two influential creatives get to know each other.
Here’s a bit of what we learned:
Mindy appreciates modern comedy, but wants something more aspirational.
“Right now I feel like the main journey of comedy, the through-line of comedy right now, is kind of a sloppy, improvisational feel with grownups who are acting a...

Michael Keaton is now attached to star in a new film called Goodrich, with Hallie Meyers-Shyer (Home Again) directing from the script she wrote and Amy Pascal producing.
Pascal has previously worked with Keaton on Spider-Man: Homecoming, as well as hits like Venom, The Post, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The story of Goodrich is about “a man named Andy Goodrich in the aftermath of his second wife leaving him. He is faced with taking care of their 9-year-old twins and has to seek help from his adult daughter.”
This sounds like an endearing story, and Keaton is an endearing guy, so I think it will be a great fit. I have loved Michael Keaton since I was a kid watching Mr. Mom, Batman, Beetlejuice, and many others. I totally love him in a fatherly role.
Does this sound like a film you’ll enjoy?...

Exclusive: The hot project du jour is Goodrich, a drama written and to be directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer. The package just went out but has multiple bids on the table after Michael Keaton became attached to star.
Here’s the logline: when Andy Goodrich’s second wife suddenly leaves him, he is faced with taking sole care of their nine-year-old twins and relies a little too heavily on the help of his adult daughter who struggles to help Andy become the father she never had.
Amy Pascal is producing and it is a potential tour de force for Keaton the way that About Schmidt was for Jack Nicholson. The plan is to start production in October.
Keaton just starred in Dumbo. He’s repped by ICM Partners.
Meyers-Shyer, who last directed the Reese Witherspoon-starrer Home Again, is repped by CAA. Pascal is also producing Greta Gerwig’s Little Women and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

“Omg! Such an exciting day! @halliemeyersshyer and @bigbluewhale are engaged! Mother of the Bride Part 2. Here we go!” Nancy captioned the photo of Hallie and her engagement ring.
Hallie, whose dad is Father of the Bride director Charles Shyer, and tech entrepreneur Ophir Tanz have been dating for nearly six years.

With the comic book-based movie ascendant, other genres have worn out their welcome with audiences, largely given to them being played out mines of creativity. One such casualty of staleness was the romcom; I would argue we haven’t had a good one of those in at least a decade. It makes sense, therefore, that the next generation of filmmaker tries the genre. You can’t have a better pedigree for this than Writer/Director Hallie Meyers-Shyer, who with parents Nancy Meyers (The Holiday) and Charles Shyer, were the last interesting purveyors in this field.
The trailers for Universal’s Home Again certainly looked promising with a look at 40-year old single mom Alice Kinney (Reese Witherspoon) raising her two daughters Isabel (Lola Flanery) and Rose (Eden Grace Redfield) in the house her now deceased father owned. Home Again is out on DVD and Blu-Ray. Here's Spencer Coile...
Home Again is not a particularly good movie. The film debut of Nancy Meyers' daughter, Hallie Meyers-Shyer, follows Reese Witherspoon as she deals with motherhood, a recent separation... and the three young filmmakers she agrees to let stay with her for an extended period of time. Standard fare, right? And it is, despite that third curve. The writing is a little too on-the-nose, characters do not feel fully fleshed out, and the editing implies serious cuts were made. Still, though, it is hard not to be won over due heavily to Witherspoon herself... ...

Winners of the 2017 Whistler Film Festival were announced at the Awards Celebration this morning on the final day of the 17th annual Festival. Ian Lagarde’s first feature All You Can Eat Buddha and Jason and Carlos Sanchez’s A Worthy Companion tied for the $15,000 cash prize presented by the Directors Guild of Canada, British Columbia and the $15,000 post-production prize sponsored by Encore Vancouver in the 14th edition of the coveted Borsos Competition for Best Canadian Feature Film. The jury states “each in their own way convey unique visions and creative storytelling the jury believes have made and will make powerful contributions to the world of cinema.”A Worthy Companion
A Worthy Companion takes a fresh and new perspective that explores the complexity and humanity within the predator, victim relationship. This film questions how we perpetuate manipulative power dynamics between adult and child through the inner struggle of our female protagonists.

Reese Witherspoon has revealed her own experiences with sexual harassment in Hollywood in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal. During a powerful speech at this year’s Elle Women in Hollywood event in Los Angeles, where Witherspoon was one of eight honorees, the actress went on the record saying she first experienced harassment from a director when she was only 16 years old.
“This has been a really hard week for women in Hollywood, for women all over the world, and a lot of situations and a lot of industries are forced to remember and relive a lot of ugly truths,” Witherspoon said. “I have my own experiences that have come back to me very vividly and I find it really hard to sleep, hard to think, hard to communicate a lot of the feelings that I’ve been having about anxiety, honest, the guilt for not speaking up earlier.

Reese Witherspoon sort-of-returns to the rom-com. Here's our review of Home Again...
Every time a new Nancy Meyers movie comes around, there’s generally a one-in-ten attach rate of thinkpieces that note that nobody makes films like she does. The elevated life that her characters live in, with barely a money worry amidst their numerous issues with other people, has made for some generally quite gentle, but often very enjoyable rom-coms. Ones I quite like.
What she doesn’t get credit for is how they’re rom-coms for grown-ups too, with characters who have actually made it past 40 years of age without succumbing to a strange Hollywood-esque belated Logan’s Run effect. Problems may not always be the ones us paupers face, but at least it's human beings of some seniority battling them.

Reese Witherspoon Talks Getting Married at Age 23 to Ryan Phillippe: ‘I Would Never Change Anything’
Reese Witherspoon is getting candid about her choice to get married to ex-husband Ryan Phillippe at 23.
In an interview on ITV’s Lorraine, shared on Thursday, the Big Little Lies star hinted she may have been too young when she wed the father of her first two children.
Speaking about her new film, Home Again, Witherspoon said of her character, “It’s about that next chapter in your life. What do you do when you get to 40 and you’ve made a decision when you were 25 to get married and have kids?”
Witherspoon and Phillippe first met in 1997 at the starlet’s 21st birthday party, they married just two years later. They share two children together: Ava, 18 and Deacon, 13.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Precious, fatuous, Nancy Meyers–lite rom-com about a privileged rich white lady with no real problems who can’t help but mom her much-younger new boyfriend. Barf. I’m “biast” (pro): love Reese Witherspoon
I’m “biast” (con): not usually a fan of romantic comedies
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Alice Kinney spends the morning of her 40th birthday crying in the bathroom. Of course she does! That’s what women do… and Alice (Reese Witherspoon: Sing, Hot Pursuit) has so much to be sad about. She lives in a big beautiful house in sunny Los Angeles, which once belonged to her now-deceased film-director father, who was super-genius and enormously popular and won Oscars and everything. She doesn’t have to work — see: wealthy dead dad — but she’s embarking on the latest in her long line of rich-white-girl...

Familiar romantic comedy tropes abound in the debut film from Hallie Meyers-Shyer, daughter of the genre’s empress, Nancy Meyers
Reese Witherspoon brand loyalty kept me on board for this, as well as a hapless addiction to what we now have to call the Meyers house style: like salivating at the sight of crème et oignon Pringles. Making her feature debut is writer-director Hallie Meyers-Shyer, daughter of feelgood-romcom empress Nancy Meyers, who has a producer credit here. The film has a lot of Nancy’s key ideas, including miraculously available and manageable younger men and outrageously expensive Martha Stewart interiors. (This film seems to use some locations from Nancy Meyers’s It’s Complicated – La’s fabulous hacienda-style homes might all look alike – and Lake Bell reprises her role as the uptight drama queen whom no one likes.)

If there’s one thing you know to expect in every Nancy Meyers film, it’s that the heroine always lives in an impeccably decorated home (see Diane Keaton’s Hamptons house in Something’s Gotta Give or Meryl Streep’s Santa Barbara abode in It’s Complicated for further proof). And it seems like that stylish decor sense runs in the family if her daughter Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s new film, Home Again—which Meyers is a producer on—is any indication.

Chicago – Seeing so many films on a daily basis, you would think that I would grow tired of them. I don’t. Instead, I begin to notice the same formulas in films, like the one in “Home Again”. Unfortunately for “Home Again” you’ll spend most of the film wondering just how much longer before you can be the same.
Rating: 1.0/5.0
The film uses the tried-and-true formula we have come to expect from many of these types of family comedies, except this one feels more tried than true. Much like Reese Witherspoon’s character in the film, we as an audience deserve better. Too long have films like this one taken us (the audience) for granted. We deserve better than these stagnant, one-sided films that ultimately don’t respect our time and leave us unfulfilled by the time they reach their predictable ends. We deserve something new, refreshing and exciting in our lives,...

After the drought of summer box office, “It” is a monsoon. It doubled already-high advance predictions, but most of all, one well-received horror film gives hope that a bad year could recover.
Records, even adjusted ones, get broken sometime. But to this degree is almost unheard of. Previously, the biggest September opening in adjusted grosses was “Rush Hour” in 1998 ($62 million). The $123 million estimate essentially doubled that number — and likely would have been about around $7 million-$8 million more, had Florida theaters not been closed.
Read More:‘It’ Review: Stephen King’s Killer Clown Faithfully Comes to Life, But Don’t Expect Any Surprises
This above-and-beyond performance happened on the traditionally comatose weekend after Labor Day. Last year, Warners took a similar risk in releasing Clint Eastwood’s “Sully,” a rare “A” title for the post-Labor Day weekend, and set a record (adjusted) at $35 million. This is 250 percent bigger.
Its success might be isolated.

Although she didn’t know it at the time, Hallie Meyers-Shyer got an idea for her first movie Home Again when she was growing up.
The first-time director, 30, says that a key plot point of her film starring Reese Witherspoon — in which a newly-divorced mom (Witherspoon) invites three young men to temporarily live in her guest house — was partially inspired by a friend’s real-life experience.
“A friend of mine when I was growing up, her mom was single and these three guys stayed with them a little bit,” Meyers-Shyer tells People. “And as you can imagine, that sounded so fun and interesting.

In the ever-expanding universe of relationship dramedies, divorce remains as prevalent a subject as ever. With Home Again, written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, any nuance on the well-tread topic comes in how little it actually matters to the characters. Reese Witherspoon (in her wheelhouse) stars as Alice Kinney, a recently-divorced mother with dreams of a new career in interior design. Meyers-Shyer is the daughter of filmmakers Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers, dutifully taking up the mantle of filming well-off white people that chat in unbelievably beautiful homes. Interior design is a biggie in this world.
After her fortieth birthday gets a tad sloppy, Alice finds herself with three young filmmakers crashing in her guest house. One’s a sheepish actor (Nat Wolff), one’s a cocksure director (Pico Alexander), and one’s a thoughtful screenwriter (Jon Rudnitsky, a standout here) with a slight obsession for Alice’s late, great director dad.

Reese Witherspoon can still do anything – check out HBO's Big Little Lies, where she does double duty as an actress and an executive producer, showing how life looks from a complex woman's point of view. Sadly, that particular skill set fails to find its way into Home Again, a patently bogus romcom in which every note rings false.
Witherspoon plays Alice Kinney, a single mom of two precocious daughters and who's just left New York for Los Angeles after splitting from her music-exec husband (Michael Sheen). You can save your tears,...

Supernatural coming-of-age stories, particularly those set in the ’80s, have become so entrenched in popular culture that it’s easy to forget where they came from. Stephen King’s sprawling 1985 novel “It” is a good place to start: In small-town Maine, a murderous shapeshifting clown faces down a group of adolescents who return as adults to finish the job years later. For decades, “It” has been the paradigm for stories about geeky kids who face terrifying threats and become grown-ups in the process. Its impact on the horror landscape is incalculable, reverberating in contemporary genre successes ranging from “The Babadook” to “Stranger Things.”
All of which makes a 2017 feature-length version into a tricky proposition. Setting aside that King’s novel already received one lengthy adaptation as a TV miniseries in 1990 with Tim Curry in the iconic role of Pennywise the clown, “It” must push beyond the familiarity of its tale...

With the worst August in twenty years and worst summer in over ten years now behind us, this weekend will turn up the heat as Fall 2017 gets underway. Debuting in over 4,100 theaters, Warner Bros. and New Line's adaptation of Stephen King's It is looking to break more than just a few records while Open Road's Home Again starring Reese Witherspoon will quietly target a much smaller audience as a counter-programming option. Before it even hits theaters, WB and New Line's It has already broken records as its 4,103 theaters is the largest opening for an R-rated film ever, topping the 4,071 theaters Logan opened in earlier this year. Obviously, that also makes it the largest opening for an R-rated horror movie, improving on the 3,761 theaters Alien: Covenant debuted in earlier this year when it opened with $36 million. This, of course, begs the question So how much is it going to open with?...

To paraphrase Thomas Wolfe, you shouldn’t go to “Home Again.” Despite the powerhouse presence of Reese Witherspoon, this limp little midlife crisis comedy leaves out the comedy and the crisis, and it certainly never comes to life. Writer-director Hallie Meyers-Shyer — the daughter of filmmakers Nancy Meyers (who produced) and Charles Shyer — seems to be channeling her mother’s films “Something’s Gotta Give” and “It’s Complicated” with a portrait of a woman of a certain age torn between a younger lover and a disappointing husband. But an inescapable shroud of blandness covers everything in the movie: the characters,...

The first thing we learn about Alice (Reese Witherspoon) in Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s directorial debut, “Home Again,” is that she’s a modern rom-com’s dream leading lady: a newly separated single mom with a kick-ass house who is just trying to make it (all of it, any of it) work. The second thing we learn about Alice is that she’s the daughter of a very famous, very respected, and very dead American director, a tongue-in-cheek reference to Meyers-Shyer’s own heritage — she’s Nancy Meyers’ daughter — that marks one of the film’s few original ideas. Still, it’s an amenable enough ramble of a romantic comedy, and Witherspoon is as charming as ever in the genre in which she excels.

If big-screen raunch fests about girls behaving badly have become the rule (Rough Night, Girls Trip and others), Home Again is the exception: a female-driven comedy so thoroughly sanitized that it's essentially wiped of personality.
A wan star vehicle for Reese Witherspoon, whose sharp, emotionally layered turn in HBO's recent Big Little Lies ranks with her best, Hallie Meyers-Shyer's directorial debut is also a feeble stab at romantic screwball — a bland simulacrum of the cinematic comfort food her parents, Nancy Meyers and Charles Shyer, have been serving up over the past few decades.
That comparison would be unfair if...
