Heitor Dhalia, one of Brazil’s foremost and most ambitious movie auteurs, director of “Drained,” “Adrift” and “Bald Mountain,” is teaming with Netflix to make “DNA do Crime,” a banner title for the U.S. streaming giant in Brazil, one of its largest international markets.
Described by Dhalia as “one of the biggest series ever produced in Brazil,” the eight-part scripted skein, which goes into production on Oct. 31, turns on a heist of epic proportions, which takes place on the Brazil-Paraguay border.
When federal police officers are called in to investigate, they discover “the beginning of a thread that unravels, like no other, the construction of crime in the country,” the synopsis runs.
“The series will try to open a new paradigm for the genre,” Dhalia told Variety. “It also talks about the tragic flaws in all of us, our deep nature,” he added.
Inspired by true events, “DNA do Crime” is created by Dhalia.

Durban — The Durban Int’l. Film Festival opened Thursday night with a celebration of South African womanhood and a commitment to diversity in film, even as it mourned the passing of a festival icon and commemorated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nelson Mandela.
The 39th edition opened with Jerome Pikwane’s “The Tokoloshe,” a psychological thriller about a destitute hospital cleaner who’s forced to confront the demons of her past to try to save a child’s life.
In prepared remarks, delivered by a colleague at Thursday’s opening ceremony because she wasn’t able to attend, Diff manager Chipo Zhou described the movie as a parable of womanhood in a country plagued by sexual violence.

It’s not every day that a three-time Oscar nominee for directing decides on a foreign language film to be his next project, but that’s exactly what Stephen Daldry of Billy Elliot, The Hours, and The Reader fame has done. Following in the footsteps of fellow Brit Danny Boyle—whose journey to India for Slumdog Millionaire earned his sole nomination and subsequently an Oscar win—Daldry takes on the novel Trash written by Andy Mulligan about three impoverished boys working as garbage pickers who find something in their nameless city’s landfill that sparks a police manhunt with grave political stakes. Adapted by Richard Curtis and situated in Brazil with corruption regarding its looming Olympics, this effectively tense adventure also delivers the heart and heroism audiences love.

Another Man’s Treasure: Daldry Revisits Themes of Childhood Lost
The muted reception behind the latest film from thrice Oscar nominated director Stephen Daldry seems curious, as the Brazilian set Trash, based on an acclaimed 2010 Ya novel by Andy Mulligan, often doesn’t belie the nature of its origins. Sure, it seems somewhat like a bid to follow in the footsteps of fellow Brit Danny Boyle’s third world set and critically acclaimed 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire, at least in its rather even keel balance of miserabilism and hopeful yearning, but this audience friendly fodder seems like a victim of underwhelming marketing.
Premiering at the end of 2014 at the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival, the title gets a bit of added validity thanks to a co-directing credit for first-timer Christian Duurvoort (previously a coach, trainer and actor on several productions by Fernando Meirelles) and actually features the native language of the...

Back in March I had the great pleasure of attending the Miami Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival, a world-class event with an incredible program, enriching industry events, and outstanding parties as they could only happen in Miami. But the festival doesn't only shine in the spring, its permanent fall event is yet another film lovers haven and was created to whet Festivalgoers' appetites for next year’s 33rd edition running March 4-13, 2016.The lineup for this event, appropriately titled Gems 2015, was announced this morning
Taking place over four days (October 22 – 25, 2015), Gems will premiere highly acclaimed films from Cannes, Berlin & Sundance; Oscar hopefuls; and international box office sensations from the U.S., Spain, Chile, Italy, France, Colombia, and many others. Mdc's Tower Theater Miami will serve as the exclusive venue for all screenings and seminars. Note that this is the only major film festival worldwide produced by a college or university.
Gems will open with director John Crowley’s "Brooklyn," which premiered at Sundance back in January and stars Oscar-nominates actress Saoirse Ronan. The festival will close with Warner Bros' anticipated "The 33" starring Antonio Banderas, Juliette Binoche, Rodrigo Santoro, Cate Del Castillo, Mario Casas and Lou Diamond Phillips.
The Festival’s Executive Director & Director of Programming Jaie Laplante states, “Film festivals are dazzling times, when the shiniest lights of the current cinema are collected in one place for a concentrated moment. So it is with this year's Gems selection, and I invite film lovers of all types to experience las joyas de la corona of the season."
The Gems film slate includes:
1. "Brooklyn" (USA / Ireland), directed by John Crowley *Opening Night Film
Adapted by Nick Hornby ("An Education") from the Colm Toibin bestselling novel, this 1950s story follows the life of a young Irish woman caught between tradition and passion, between two countries and two futures. Starring Oscar nominee for Atonement, Saoirse Ronan, the cast also includes Jim Broadbent, Julie Walters, Emory Cohen, and Domhnall Gleason.
2. "The 33" (USA / Chile), directed by Patricia Riggen *Closing Night Film
An international rescue effort to save 33 Chilean miners trapped 2,300 foot underground for 69 days in the Copiapó mine riveted over a billion people in 2010, and now a superb international film adaptation recreates the details of that unprecedented event. The epic list of cast names includes Antonio Banderas, Juliette Binoche and Rodrigo Santoro.
3. "The Assassin" (Taiwan), directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien *Winner of the Best Director Award at Cannes 2015
In 9th century China, 10-year-old Nie Yinniang is abducted by a nun who transforms her into an impressive warrior. One day, she is sent back to the land of her birth, with orders to kill the man whom she was promised, and Nie Yinniang must choose: assassinate the man she loves or break forever from the scared honor of her training.
4. "The Club" (El club) (Chile), directed by Pablo Larraín
Director Pablo Larraín's follow-up to his global success and Oscar-nominated "No," (starring Gael Garcia Bernal), is a tough, scathing and psychologically sobering indictment on the Catholic Church's handling of moral failings within the institution.
5. "Embrace of the Serpent" (El abrazo de la serpiente) (Colombia), directed by Ciro Guerra *Winner of the Top Directors' Fortnight Award at Cannes 2015
Guerra’s previous film, "The Wind Journeys" (2009), was an international hit and one of the 2010 Festival's most popular films in Miami. For his new film, Guerra travels deep into the wilds of the Amazon jungle, and into the dangerous territory of the historical past. This is an epic and thrilling journey, capped with velvety, rich black & white cinematography, confirming Guerra's status as one of Latin America's most confident talents.
6. "Havana Motor Club" (USA / Cuba), directed by Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt
One of the most fascinating events of Miami International Film Festival in 2014 was filmmaker Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt's special presentation on his creative process in constructing his portrait of Cuba's top underground drag racers of classic American cars. A year later, the film is now complete, and Gems is delighted to bring Perlmutt back to Miami to share the finished work.
7. "It’s Now or Never" (Ahora o nunca) (Spain), directed by Maria Ripoll
This summer's biggest homegrown box office hit in Spain, It's Now or Never pairs Spain's newest film star, Dani Rovira, whose charms help propel "Spanish Affair" (Ocho apellidos vascos) to become Spain's all-time box office champion, with the luminous Goya winner María Valverde, who gets a rare opportunity to demonstrate her comedic gifts. The result is a frothy, frisky comedy of first-class creative power, expertly timed and filled with joyous performances, from the leads to the delightful character actors found in even the smallest roles. Clara Largo and Alicia Rubio co-star in this comedy that once again proves no one does inspired silliness quite like the Spanish.
8. "Krisha" (USA), directed by Trey Edward Shults
Winner of both the Grand Jury Price and the Audience Award at SXSW earlier this year, Trey Edward Shults’ highly personal and compelling hypnotic drama was also selected at this year’s Critics Week in Cannes. Shults has already drawn comparisons to the work of legendary American independent director John Cassavetes for their use of family members in the cast and also their maverick avant-garde style of shooting favoring characters and scenes that envelop the viewer in both observation and emotion.
9. "Mia Madre" (Italy), directed by Nanni Moretti
Nanni Moretti’s "Mia Madre" is possibly his most personal film, and a master class on autobiographical cinema. It displays without question why Moretti is considered one of the most skilled living filmmakers to create powerful universal drama out of our smallest little big tragedies. John Turturro co-stars.
10. "My Golden Days" (France), directed by Arnaud Desplechin *Winner of Directors Fortnight Award at Cannes 2015
After years working abroad, anthropologist Paul Dedalus (Mathieu Amalric) returns to France to find an explosive emotional time bomb awaits him. This epic coming of age tale portrays first love as a candid, sensual and unique experience that his alter-ego discovers could leave a mark that will last as long as life itself.
11. "A Perfect Day" (Spain), directed by Fernando León de Aranoa.
Spanish director Fernando León de Aranoa makes his first English language film with this Cannes-debuting tale of 24 hours in the lives of two veteran humanitarian aid workers in the waning days of the 1995 Balkan War. Veteran Hollywood stars Benicio del Toro and Tim Robbins are in fine form as the leads, who hold on to their boyish charms even as they age with graceful wisdom.
12. "Trash" (U.K. / Brazil), directed by Stephen Daldry. *Special Gems Preview Night on October 5, 2015.
Three-time Best Director Oscar nominee Stephen Daldry ("Billy Elliott," "The Hours," "The Reader") delivers the soaring triumphs of his earlier successes, while shining a spotlight on the sobering challenges facing one of the world's most closely-watched cities, Rio de Janeiro. The high-powered cast includes Brazilian superstars Wagner Moura ("Elite Squad") and Selton Mello ("Jean Charles," "The Clown"), as well as Martin Sheen and Rooney Mara.
13. "Yona" (Israel), directed by Nir Bergman
Like a "living thunderbolt", the bold and nonconformist Yona Wallach stormed through Tel-Aviv's male-dominated political and poetry circles in the 1960s. Yona’s work eventually became recognized in the most prominent literary books and magazines of her time, and she was honored with the Israeli Prime Minister’s Literary Award in 1978. Director Nir Bergman’s biopic vividly captures Yona’s highs, lows and her brave rebellion against a chauvinistic society with her unique voice.
14. "Youth" (Italy), directed by Paolo Sorrentino
The space (and communion) between the generations is the subject of Paolo Sorrentino's newest Fellini-tinged masterpiece. Coming off his 2014 Oscar win for Best Foreign Language Film for "The Great Beauty," the Italian auteur is on a roll, orchestrating grand themes around life's wisdom with a phenomenal cast of actors including Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, Rachel Weisz, and Jane Fonda.
In addition to Gems slate of premieres, the festival will be hosting a heartfelt special Master Class Tribute to the late James Horner. Known as Hollywood’s ultimate movie composer, he passed away in an aircraft accident this past June, not long after completing what would turn out to be one of his final great scores – the music for Patricia Riggen’s "The 33." On the eve of the premiere of the film Miami-based feature film composer Carlos Rafael Rivera ( "A Walk Among The Tombstones," 2014) will take an in-depth look at Horner’s work and career, using cues to demonstrate the powerful, yet often subtle, creative influence Horner brought to specific scenes and entire films.
Tickets will go on sale to Miami Film Society members exclusively on Friday, September 25, 2015 and to the general public on Thursday, October 1, 2015. Tickets: 1-844-565-6433(Miff) or www.miamifilmfestival.com/Gems.

Trash follows three Brazilian street teenagers; Raphael, Gardo, and Rat (Jun-Jun) who spend their time picking through litter in the hope of finding useful waste. One day they discover a wallet whose contents will bring them into conflict with the brutal local police force as they find themselves unlikely whistleblowers in a city rife with corruption. Rather than turn the wallet over to the authorities for a reward, the kids seek the confidence of a priest, Father Juilliard (Martin Sheen) and an Ngo-worker, Olivia (Rooney Mara). The new movie stars Wagner Moura, Selton Mello, Rooney Mara, and Martin Sheen. “Trash” hits theaters on October 9.

Yahoo has debuted the maiden and indeed uplifting trailer for Stephen Daldry’s slum drama, Trash, following thee young children – played by Rickson Tevez, Gabriel Weinstein, and Luis Eduardo – who while away the hours on one of Rio de Janeiro’s infamous dumps.
Highlighting the decidedly less glamorous side of the Brazilian mega-city, the footage is an riveting tease of the feature film, which sees the aforementioned trio stumble upon a wallet that is considered important to some of the most powerful people in the area. Filmed in and around Rio’s favelas, the first Trash clip evokes a similar mise-en-scene to City of God, though we’ll be truly surprised if Daldry’s picture can capture even a fraction of the emotional punch as the 2003 classic.
There’s also some familiar faces cast alongside the relative unknowns, with Trash also making room for Martin Sheen, Rooney Mara, and Wagner Moura.

Stephen Daldry occupies a rarefied position. He is one of the few filmmakers to have been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director four times in a row and for his first four films: “Billy Elliott,” “The Hours,” “The Reader” and “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” (three of the four were also nominated for Best Picture). Perhaps after years of Oscar-bait material —he has directed six actors in Oscar-nominated performances, namely Julie Walters, Nicole Kidman, Ed Harris, Julianne Moore, Kate Winslet, and Max von Sydow— Daldry has switched gears for “Trash” a movie set in the slums of Rio with big stars cast in supporting roles. This isn’t a children’s movie… and yet it kind of is, too, with its odd mishmash of social realism, action thrills, misplaced comedy, and simplistic drama. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

The police in Rio de Janeiro “treat poor people like trash.” So says young teen Raphael (Rickson Tevez), in case you hadn’t already grasped the double entendre of the title. When Raphael discovers a really nice, surely accidentally discarded wallet while working as a trash picker in a massive Rio landfill, he shares the cash with his pal Gardo (Eduardo Luis), and then the two are off on a sort of treasure hunt to unravel the meaning of the other mysterious items in the wallet, including a train-station locker key, photos of a little girl,...

Brazil has been thrust into the spotlight of late thanks to last year's World Cup and its forthcoming Olympic Games in 2016, but look past the sunny samba beat and you'll find a country overrun with corruption. Four special awards were also presented:
The Latin American Festival Award, decided by the Advisory Council Cinema23 went to the Havana Film Festival (Festival de Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano). On December 3, 1979, over five hundred film professionals, mainly from Latin America, met in Havana, Cuba, for the inaugural Festival of New Latin American Cinema, which in its own words, "sought to build a space to identify and disseminate films whose significance and artistic values enrich and reaffirm American and Caribbean cultural identity where rich dialogue between film professionals, students and the informed public and critics gather". For decades and through its multiple realities Havana has played a role in community building around film as an art form and as an incentive for social reflection.
The work of more than three decades by a team led today by Ivan Giroud and which survives the noble and generous spirit of its founder, Alfredo Guevara, and those like Santiago Alvarez and Gabriel García Márquez, who have accompanied him from his beginnings, deserves to be recognized by those who think that culture is a way that allows us to approach, meet, recognize and move away from violence towards a better world. "With this award go our admiration and our gratitude to the Festival of New Latin American Cinema of Havana."
The Critics' Award, selected by Fipresci (Federation International Film Critics) went to the Brazilian writer José Carlos Avellar for his critical work. An admired and appreciated writer, critic, teacher and programmer, Avellar worked for over twenty years for the newspaper Jornal do Brasil, and has published six books on Brazilian and Latin American cinema. The former vice-president of Fipresci is also Berlinale's delegate in Brazil. More information and examples of his work can be found in his website www.escrevercinema.com.
Recognition of the Exhibition Sector, awarded by the leading exhibitors in the region went to Mexican actor and producer, Eugenio Derbez, for "No se aceptan devoluciones" ("Instructions Not Included").
The resurgence of Mexican films which began in 2001 with the all-time hit "Amores Perros" by Alejandro González Iñárritu and which also introduced Gael Garcia Bernal to the public (U.S. box office $5,408,467, worldwide $20,908,467) and "El crimen del Padre Amaro" in 2002 (U.S. box office $5,717,044, worldwide: $26,996,738) up until the hits, "Nosotros los Nobles" and "No se aceptan devoluciones" had the highest number admissions than any other Mexican film. Twelve years later, in six weeks "No se aceptan devolucions" outgrossed both "Amores" and "El crimen" combined. México Televisa’s Videocine Mexican box office was Us $44,882,061 and U.S. box office was $44,143,000. This is truly an exhibitor's dream movie.
No sooner had "Los Nobles" swept the Mexican box-office off its feet than another Mexican movie, independently produced by Monica Lozano’s México City-based Alebrije Cine y Video, "Instructions Not Included" was released -- first in the U.S. by Pantelion on August 30, 2013, almost three weeks before its Mexican release on September 20, 2013. The two countries grossed an equal amount. Moreover, Videocine released the film on 1,500 prints similar to a major release of a film such as "Batman". Through the Cinepolis chain’s use of satellite, these 1,500 prints were able to show on 2,500 screens. This represents both a new release pattern and a new type of Mexican film.
Previously Mexican films which were meant for the Mexican and Mexican-American audience (as opposed to those targeted to the art house audiences) were perceived as too Mexican by their U.S. target and they were released in the U.S. only after the Mexican release, and by that time, piracy had done its work in the U.S. and the film lacked the prestige of an "American" film. This film and the previous film, "The Noble Family", are not typically Mexican. Their storyline could be transposed anywhere, and in fact "The Noble Family" remake rights have been sold to U.S. In addition, releasing the film first in the U.S. changes the perception of the film in México. Being such a success in U.S. paves the way for its success in México as if it were validated as a "good" film.
Added to these two elements is the third key to success, Eugenio Derbez, the director and star of "Instructions", is a major TV comedy star in México and is known by all Mexicans wherever they reside. Mexican TV is quite powerful, it has a duopoly made by Televisa and TV Azteca. Derbez comes from Televisa. The film was also shot in English and Spanish and takes place in the U.S. Finally, Derbez himself and former head of production at Pantelion, Ben Odell, have now established a production company, 3 Spas, pronounced "Tres Paz" which funnily enough sounds like "tripas" or "guts". Reese Witherspoon whose film "Wild" opened the festival said that she had approached Derbez for a film she was producing already, but he was busy. However, she hopes they will soon find a project to do together. How great that will be for the exhibitors, the distributors and the audiences around the world!
The Phoenix Lifetime Achievement Award, which is awarded by the different academies and film associations in all the differenct countries of the region and announced by the Mexican Academy of Arts and Cinematographic Sciences, went to Arturo Ripstein. Recognized as one of the great masters in the history of Mexican cinema, Ripstein said, "I'm glad to say that a lifetime achievement award is usually given when one is finished with everything. But I am pleased to say that I still need a bit of experience, because next week I start my new film. I've been practicing this craft half a century, and this (the Phoenix Award ) symbolizes what it has really cost me over the past 50 years."

List of all winners include:

Are we ready for the "Brazilian answer to 'Slumdog Millionaire?'" Rio Film Festival audiences quickly granted "Trash," the latest from "The Hours" director Stephen Daldry, that label after the the film pleased crowds with comedy, child wonder, and "offshore" energy (as trades love to refer to it). Polling attendees after the film's applause-filled premiere, a Variety reporter found many locals agreed that, despite "Trash" not being a true Brazilian movie, "it is not non-Brazilian in the best sense." Many praised it for being more entertaining than most "favela" (or, Latin America slum) dramas. Whether Americans will ever see it is up in the air. Based on Andy Mulligan's young adult novel of the same name, "Trash" tells the story of three “dumpsite boys," who "make a living picking through the mountains of garbage on the outskirts of a large city." Their lives spiral out of control when...

Here’s our first look at the Trash poster, an introduction to many of the new film from Stephen Daldry and Richard Curtis.
Those names should do enough to give you an idea of where this one is heading – Inspiration City by way of Feelgood Highway and Uplift Heights. Martin Sheen and Rooney Mara are the names headlining but as you’ll see from the synopsis they are supporting the film’s real leads.

Andy Mulligan's novel Trash was a hit on release in 2010, shortlisted for the prestigious Carnegie Award for children's books. Now Stephen Daldry has turned it into a film, and here's the first poster to prove it.As you can probably tell from this, it's the story of three young boys who eke out a living from the trash at a dump site. There, Raphael (Rickson Teves), Gardo (Eduardo Luis) and Rato (Gabriel Weinstein) find a leather bag that contains a wallet with money and some pictures in it, and a key. When the police turn up offering a large reward for the wallet's return, the boys get suspicious, and start to piece together the life of its former owner, José Angelo (Wagner Moura). Soon the dangerous Frederico (Selton Mello) is after them and they have to find someone they can trust to get the word out.The film also stars Martin Sheen,...

Few filmmakers have the Oscar pedigree of Stephen Daldry, whose past works include Billy Elliot, The Hours, The Reader and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (all of which have been nominated for Best Picture and/or Best Director). And so, though his upcoming film Trash doesn’t yet have a U.S. release date, it would be foolhardy to count it out of this year’s awards race.
In the film, scripted by Richard Curtis (About Time), “three poverty-stricken boys who discover something unusual, mysterious, and dangerous in a city dump.” The latest trailer for Trash, released through Universal Pictures Brazil, certainly maintains the thrilling, adventurous vibe that the film’s first preview gave off.
Though I can honestly claim to understand less than one-fifth of this international trailer, the Slumdog Millionaire-esque tone and impressive visuals paint Trash as another fascinating work from Daldry. And with Rooney Mara and...

Here's an trailer update for an intriguing new animated feature film I first profiled in April. Directed by Luiz Bolognesi, and titled Rio 2096, A Story of Love and Fury, the animated film tells the story of Brazil in 4 phases: colonization, slavery, military regime, and then looks to the future, in 2096, during which a war for water is taking place. Promising a history of Brazil that you've never seen told quite like this, central to the narrative is an immortal hero's search for the woman he has been in love with for 600 years. Three decades spent in any profession may seed some existential doubts. Especially 30 years performing as an actor. So when "The Clown" auteur Selton Mello felt pangs of uncertainty about his career, he transformed them into a film he wrote, directed and starred in. "I chose a clown because it's a tribute to my art. That's the point." "The Clown," Brazil's...

The Oscar season is almost upon us, and the submissions list is in for the Best Foreign Language Film category, featuring a record 71 entries, including the first submission from Kenya.
Last year, Iran’s Asghar Farhadi came away with the top prize for his acclaimed film, A Separation, and the year before, it was Denmark’s Susanne Bier with her In a Better World.
This year, there are already a handful of strong contenders amongst the pack, most notably Michael Haneke’s Amour, for Austria, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes; Olivier Nakache’s and Éric Toledano’s The Intouchables, for France, which has been breaking records at the global box office; Pablo Larráin’s No, for Chile, which also came away from Cannes with an award in hand; Kim Ki-duk’s Pieta, for South Korea, which took four awards at Venice, including (controversially) the Golden Lion; and...

The Intouchables
A record 71 countries, including first-time entrant Kenya, have submitted films for consideration in the Foreign Language Film category for the 85th Academy Awards®. In May, Michael Haneke.s Amour (Love) won the Palme d.Or at the 65th Cannes Film Festival and was shown this past weekend at the 50th New York Film Festival. However the film I was happiest to see make the list below is from France – The Intouchables from directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano. Check out our review Here.
In the Academy’s rules, only one picture will be accepted from each country. Plus the Academy Statuette (Oscar) will be awarded to the motion picture and accepted by the director on behalf of the picture.s creative talents. Ultimately five foreign language motion pictures are nominated for this award.

Update: The official list has been revealed and the total is a record 71 movies. I have updated the list directly below or you can check it out here. The original article follows. I have been tracking the Oscar Foreign Language submissions again this year, as I have for the past several years, and it looks like we finally have a full field as I expect we will be seeing an official press release from the Academy some time this week. This year we have five more submissions already over last year as the total has now reached 68 submissions compared to last year's 63. This, despite, Iran boycotting the Oscars this year due to the anti-Islam film Innocence of Muslims, which has sparked so much controversy as of late. To reach the total of 68 films I have just finished adding 16 more titles to the list from the following countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Argentina,...

To siphon out front-runners is never easy in this category, though there are a few that stick out immediately.

Iran, the winner of last year (A separation) decided not to send an entry this year in protest of a youtube film that ridiculed the prophet.
