The untitled multi-cam comedy was picked up at Netflix in April with a 16-episode order. Morgan co-created the series with Susan McMartin and Chuck Lorre. The role marks a reunion for Lorre and Johnston, as Johnston previously appeared in the CBS multi-cam “Mom,” which Lorre also co-created.
The official description for Morgan’s series states: “Leanne’s life takes an unexpected turn when her husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman. Johnston will star in the series regular role of Carol, Leanne’s sister. The character is said to be Leanne’s complete opposite.

Warner Bros.’ “Shazam!” is powering its way to a super second weekend, retaining its No. 1 spot at the box office with an estimated $22 million.
Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s remake of “Hellboy” is getting scorched, with just $12 million estimated from 3,303 domestic locations in its debut weekend. That number would place it at No. 3 after Universal’s body-swap comedy “Little,” with about $15 million.
“Shazam!” has so far generated $76 million domestically for WB and New Line, with another $126 million overseas. David F. Sandberg directed the film, which stars Zachary Levi as the titular superhero.
The third “Hellboy” adaptation is coming in below earlier projections, which had placed it in the $16 million to $20 million range. The film, starring “Stranger Things'” David Harbour in the titular role, took in $4.93 million on Friday. It cost about $50 million to produce, so if estimates hold, “Hellboy’s” start could look ominous.

Based upon Anna Todd’s novel–which itself has been described as a work of One Direction fan fiction–After is a mild entry into the good girl takes a walk on the wild side genre that’s been the basis for countless teen romances, thrillers, and Nicolas Sparks romantic dramas. Jenny Gage, the director of the admired All This Panic–a film about the internal lives of teenage girls battling dysfunctional families, uncertain living conditions, and the general anxiety of growing up and going to college–is certainly an interesting choice to direct After, although Catherine Breillat would have been an inspired one.

The new teaser trailer for After is filled with making out…lots of making out. And based on the tagline: “After your first, life will never be the same” the movie probably goes beyond making out.
Based on the best-selling Ya novel by Anna Todd, the teaser for After gives off some serious CW vibes mixed with Fifty Shades of Grey PG-13 lustiness and a dash of unrequited love from Twilight — minus the vampires and werewolves. The movie follows Tessa (Josephine Langford), a dedicated student, dutiful daughter and loyal girlfriend to her high school sweetheart, as she enters her first semester in college. Armed with grand ambitions for her future, her guarded world opens up when she meets the dark and mysterious Hardin Scott (Hero Fiennes Tiffin), a magnetic, brooding rebel who makes her question all she thought she knew about herself and what she wants out of life.

Bruce Beresford’s newest film “Mr. Church” follows the relationship between talented cook Henry Church (Eddie Murphy) and young girl Charlie Brooks (Britt Robertson) over the course of many years. It’s based on a true story from the life of screenwriter Susan McMartin, who was helped raised by a local cook who taught her to believe she could grow up to be anything. Though the film was stuck in development hell for over eight years, and was once attached to Samuel L. Jackson, it was finally released domestically this past September. In a behind-the-scenes clip from the film, Eddie Murphy and Britt Robertson discuss bringing McMartin’s story to life. Watch the clip below.

Eddie Murphy’s newest movie, Mr. Church, took him back to his high school days. The comedy legend tries out drama in the film, playing Henry Joseph Church, a cook who has a unique friendship with a young girl named Charlie (Britt Robertson) and her sick mother. The film is based on the real-life adolescence of the screenwriter, Susan McMartin, and takes place primarily in the 1970s. One scene has Mr. Church seeing Charlie off to her prom for the class of 1977. Murphy’s own senior prom was in 1979, but it looked quite different from the California WASPy private school dance in Mr. Church. When I interviewed Murphy about the film, he recalled the song that got played over and over at his prom in Roosevelt, New York: “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now.” The song by R&B duo McFadden & Whitehead rapidly became a hit after its release in...

If you didn’t know what you were getting into upon sitting down for Bruce Beresford‘s Mr. Church, you will following this onscreen text: “Inspired by a True Friendship.” The vagueness of this statement notwithstanding, the words ooze enough schmaltz to prepare you for the melodrama of death and miracles screenwriter Susan McMartin has concocted. Maybe she based it on a friendship she had with an adult male who become her father figure in a time of need or perhaps the entire premise is a purely fictional construct surrounding feelings experienced within a relationship devoid of similarities besides being between two people. All I know for certain is that those involved didn’t just want to make any old tearjerker; they sought to squeeze their audience dry like a sponge.

If there’s one thing that studio executives never get tired of greenlighting, it’s stories of privileged but emotionally damaged young white people who have their lives changed by the presence of older working-class black folk. Glancing up at the calendar, the year is 2016, a fact that’s kind of difficult to reconcile with this brand new trailer for Mr. Church. Directed by Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy) from an autobiographical screenplay by writer Susan McMartin (Another World, Two And A Half Men), Mr. Church is the story of a young woman (Britt Robertson) whose world is torn asunder when her mother (Natascha McElhone) falls ill. Luckily though, their wise, jazz-and-book-loving cook (Eddie Murphy) is there to take the impressionable child under his wing and teach and teach her about the world in his strict but loving way. Naturally, there’s at least once scene involving a porch ...

Eddie Murphy is back in his first live-action performance since 2012’s A Thousand Words with Mr. Church. Rather than much of his past work, the film is not comedy, but a drama concerning the titular Henry Church (Murphy), a talented cook with a love of jazz who is hired by a dying mother as help for her six year old daughter. While the arrangement is set for six months, it develops into a 15-year journey of friendship and care.

The film looks to be a touching, sad story of aging and acceptance with a sweet performance from Murphy. See the trailer below ahead of a release next month.

Following the financial success of Fifty Shades of Grey, Hollywood.s takeaway appears to be that audiences will support stories derived from published fanfiction. especially if there.s a steamy aspect to it. Now that the vampire lover Edward has inspired kinky businessman Christian Grey, a new object of obsession will be moving to the big screen, this one with roots on the pop music charts. Anna Todd.s book series After chronicles the torrid romance between college freshman Tessa and the tattooed, British "bad boy" Hardin Scott, who changes everything about the squeaky-clean girl with just one kiss.
