New York -- Pianist Herbie Hancock will celebrate the special connection between Turkey and jazz music forged decades ago when the Turkish ambassador opened his residence to white and black musicians at a time when segregation held sway in the U.S. capital.
Hancock, a Unesco Goodwill Ambassador, is organizing a gala concert with jazz stars from around the world on April 30 at the famed Hagia Irene in the outer courtyard of Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, which has been designated the host city for the second annual U.N.-sanctioned International Jazz Day.
"There's an amazing history of the relationship between Turkey and jazz," Hancock told The Associated Press in a telephone interview ahead of Tuesday's official announcement of the 2013 International Jazz Day program.

Allan Holdsworth: Hard Hat Area; None Too Soon (MoonJune)
Never mind what you've been told by the hagiographers of more famous six-stringers -- the contest for "greatest living British guitarist" is between John McLaughlin (Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra) and Allan Holdsworth (Soft Machine, Tony Williams Lifetime [as McLaughlin's replacement], U.K., Gong), and Holdsworth is my choice. That so much of his solo catalog (around twenty albums) has been hard to find in the U.S. has not helped his case here. Both of these reissues are important albums, for somewhat different reasons.
After a period where Holdsworth's albums had been pure products of the studio, with him laying down the guitar tracks (often guitar synthesizer) and having sessionmen overdub later, 1993's Hard Hat Area put an excellent band -- keyboardist Steve Hunt, bass guitarist Skuli Sverrisson, and drummer Gary Husband -- in the studio with him, interacting in the moment and even creating the closing track collaboratively.

I'm sure any CBMer of a certain age, or even those wise enough to catch some re-runs, remember the Kung Fu Tv series fondly. It starred the late David Carradine as a Shaolin Monk possessed of great martial arts skills as he wanders the American wild west in search of his brother, adventure and enlightenment. It was pretty damn awesome. And now Legendary Entertainment are bringing us a big screen version with none other than Hudson himself at the helm.. Bill Paxton is in talks to direct Kung Fu, a screen adaptation of the classic 1972 TV series that starred David Carradine. Paxton, who’s coming off a run in the HBO series Big Love, gets the job after helming two solid films: Frailty and The Greatest Game Ever Played. John McLaughlin will write the script. It will be nice to see ol Grasshopper up there on the cinema screen. Kung Fu...

Classic 70s TV series Kung-Fu could be coming back, but this time to the big screen as Deadline report that Legendary Entertainment are putting together a movie version of the series (which wouldn’t be the first Fyi), under the possible direction of actor Bill Paxton. Paxton, who currently star in HBO’s Big Love and previously helmed Frailty and The Greatest Game Ever Played would direct from a script by John McLaughlin, with shooting set to partly take place in China.
No word on a cast for Kung-Fu as yet, but hopefully this time round we actually get a Chinese actor in the role of Kwai Chang Caine, the Shaolin monk who wanders the American West after leaving his ancestral home – a character originally made famous in the series and its sequel, Kung-Fu: The Legend Continues, by David Carradine.

It’s time for the East to meet the West. Deadline has reported Bill Paxton is in talks to direct the movie adaptation of the 1970s television show “Kung Fu.” The television series followed a Shaolin Monk (played by David Carradine) who fled to America. He ended using his martial arts skills to fight ruffians in the wild west. Paxton is known for his acting roles in several movies and television series. He was best known recently on HBO’s “Big Love.” However, he has a couple of directing credits including “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” and “Frailty.” John McLaughlin is hired to write the script adaptation. The original series tracked the adventures of a Shaolin monk as he wanders the American West. The monk wants peace but usually winds up using his spectacular martial arts skills to kick some serious tail, in between flashbacks of his early life in the monastery.

Many people thought NBC’s singing competition “The Voice” – which features songstress Christina Aguilera, country crooner Blake Shelton, Cee-Lo “Eff You” Green and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine as judges/mentors – would get swept under the rug considering “American Idol” has long had a stranglehold on the competitive singing market. Turns out, folks loved it, and the new season is gearing up to be a much bigger production with more singers, more blind rounds and a massive premiere.
Season two is set to kickoff in one of the most coveted television spots around – the slot immediately following the Super Bowl – and production is already well underway. This year the four teams will expand to twelve singers per coach, a significant increase from last year’s eight. Billboard spoke to the judges about the forthcoming season and Aguilera was quick to note the variety of singers the show will spotlight,...
