In spite of the success of The Great Escaper, Pathe UK is moving exclusively to television, and ceasing its film work.
Well, this is very sad news. Even as these words are being written, plaudits continue to be aimed at The Great Escaper, the much-liked film starring Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson. It’s the latest film to be released in the UK by Pathe UK, which has been putting films into British cinemas for over 20 years.
But it also looks as though The Great Escaper will be one of its last.
It’s been announced that Pathe UK is to refocus its business, away from cinema and instead towards scripted television. The company will be reducing its headcount down from 15 people working on the UK side to 12.
Pathe itself isn’t exiting the film business: instead, it’s going to be centring its film production work through its office in Paris.

IFC Films has picked up the North American rights to The Lost King ahead of its debut at the Toronto Film Festival.
The film reunites the team behind 2013’s Philomena — Stephen Frears, Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope — for a comedy-drama based on a true story about Philippa Langley, played by Sally Hawkins, and the historian who helped uncover the remains of King Richard III, lost for more than 500 years, beneath a carpark in the English city of Leicester.
The discovery, in 2012, was the culmination of years of obsessive research by Langley, who faced the incomprehension of friends and family and the derision of experts and academics, and whose role was largely overlooked. Coogan will play Langley’s husband and Frears will direct from a script co-written by Coogan and Pope.

IFC Films is acquiring North American rights to Stephen Frears’ drama The Lost King, starring Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) and Steve Coogan (The Trip), ahead of its world premiere at the 47th Toronto Film Festival.
The film reuniting Frears with writers Coogan and Jeff Pope—who adapted the script for his 2013 dramedy Philomena—tells the remarkable true story of amateur historian Philippa Langley (Hawkins), who was behind the real life discovery of King Richard III in 2012 after the remains had been lost for 500 years. Langley spent years researching and searching for the remains, in spite of skepticism from friends, family and academics. Her story is one of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country’s most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England’s history. The beating heart of Pathé U.K. is Cameron McCracken, the lawyer-turned-producer who’s been at the company for over two decades, with 15 of those years at the helm as managing director.
It would be an understatement to say the industry has changed over that time. The production and distribution landscapes have morphed almost beyond recognition, and McCracken acknowledges that Pathé U.K. must remain flexible to stay in the game. That includes moving into television for the first time as well as being open to new models of distribution — including potentially forgoing theatrical exhibition.

Pathe UK managing director Cameron McCracken has explained how the company’s newly signed UK-Ireland distribution deal with Warner Bros will benefit the company.
The Pathé head acknowledged that he and his colleagues had explored “alliances” with a number of other potential distribution partners following the Disney takeover of Fox, Pathé’s previous partner.

Warner Bros. Entertainment is set to distribute all Pathé titles in the UK and Ireland from later this year.
The new agreement will kick off on September 3 with the release of Roger Michell’s The Duke, starring Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren.
Pathé UK previously had a longstanding distribution deal with Fox/Disney, which began in 2011 and ends on June 30. Pathé UK will continue to devise and fund the marketing and publicity campaigns for its films.
The deal does not impact Pathé France nor Pathé UK’s role as an international sales agent for its own productions and third-party titles.
