On the 16th of February 1993, Count Duckula bade its audience ‘Goodnight out there…whatever you are’ for the final time. For five years from 1988, Cosgrove Hall‘s creepy and clever animated kids’ show about a vegetarian vampire duck had dazzled audiences with its madcap mix of farce, physical comedy and witty word-play.
While never as broadly popular as Danger Mouse – the spoof spy caper out of which it was spun, and which also featured David Jason as the voice of its titular character – Count Duckula built a steadfast core of fans. To them, Count Duckula was The Rolling Stones to Danger Mouse‘s Beatles, a darker, edgier delight for those who prefer their cartoons with a little more bite. Whichever way you look at it, it’s hard to refute that they don’t make kids’ TV shows quite like Count Duckula anymore…

It’s the mid-season finale, and Supernatural did not hold anything back.
This was a great way to go into a long break—with fans wanting more. Not only did we finally reunite Jack and the Winchesters, but the episode simply had beautiful cinematography. A lot of care was put into the visuals of this episode, so I’m going to share what I noticed.

Supernatural is back for lucky season number thirteen. And what better way to usher it in than with a bouncing baby Lucifer? Well, he's not a baby and he's not Lucifer. We'll get to that later.
The end of season twelve was a monumental fight against the clock, with battles happening all around, as baby Jack was born. Crowley died a hero, Mary Winchester faced off against Lucifer, and Castiel suffered perma-death. Although most of the specifics regarding the upcoming season of Supernatural remain shrouded in mystery, one thing’s for certain: Lucifer’s son, Jack, is someone we’re going to be seeing a whole lot of. In fact, Entertainment Weekly was able to confirm just as much by reporting that Alexander Calvert (Arrow‘s Anarky) will be a series regular.
Truth be told, I’m a little surprised to hear such news, mostly due to the fact that it took fan favorites such as Mark A. Sheppard (Crowley) and Mark Pellegrino (Lucifer himself) years to be granted such a privilege. That aside, this gives us a minor inkling as to how greatly Jack must factor into the producers’ plans over the course of the next year.
Before proceeding any further, let’s take a look at the character description provided for the latest addition to the principal cast:

Decades ago, the samurai warrior created a template for the modern action hero, inspiring silent western heroes and gunslinging detectives alike. So it follows that any modern take on the samurai really needs to prove its worth. Quentin Tarantino’s two-part “Kill Bill” charts the history of stylized action from the East to the West, but Genndy Tartakovsky’s “Samurai Jack” fuses them into a spectacular whole. The animated series originally aired on Cartoon Network between 2001 and 2004, but returns as a miniseries this March to conclude the story — and so far, it remains some of the best action-based storytelling out there. Exploiting the pliability of animation to its greatest potential, Tartakovsky transforms his influences into a hugely satisfying formula of his own making, delivering an action-packed masterpiece on par with the best of the genre.
For the uninitiated, the premise of “Samurai Jack” is relatively straightforward: In feudal Japan, a...

There’s a new boss at the Phoenix Foundation.
After the latest departure and sudden arrest of Director Patricia Thornton (Sandrine Holt), Phoenix Foundation has recruited needed a new director.
CBS announced actress Meredith Eaton will fill in those shoes as a series regular on MacGyver. She will play Matt Webber, the new director of operations and boss to Mac.
According to the press announcement, Matty Webber is a legend in the covert ops world. She was Jack’s (George Eads) superior for 18 months while on assignment in South America.
There’s also a little hint that Jack may not be happy to having her as a boss again.
“Matty Webber is a tough cookie and despite her history with Jack, she’ll have no problem finding her place in the Phoenix team. She may even teach Mac a few new tricks,” said executive producer and showrunner Peter Lenkov.

I first became acquainted with director Peter Medak’s work in 1983 when I saw his 1980 masterwork The Changeling, one of the most frightening ghost stories shot in color. Also known for 1972’s The Ruling Class and 1990’s The Krays, Mr. Medak made the film noir Romeo is Bleeding, shot in 1992 and released on Friday, February 4, 1994. The film is told in an elliptical narrative fashion, starting with the end and going back in time to show us how the protagonist got to where he is. We first see Jack Grimaldi in a dilapidated diner, his voiceover indicative of a man full of regrets who is probably in the Witness Protection Program and forced to lead a life bereft of any true purpose or feeling. Once upon a time, he was a police officer in New York City and his partners are comprised of actors we know well today:...

Nb: This article contains spoilers for the 1981 film, Blow Out.
It all begins with a scream. Jack (John Travolta) is a sound technician working on a tawdry, low-budget slasher movie where the usual gaggle of photogenic teenagers gets hacked up by a knife-wielding maniac. The big problem for Jack is, the director doesn’t find the strangled, squeaky cry of the killer’s latest victim convincing enough. Jack and the director sit in the editing bay, glumly reviewing the footage, listening to the co-ed’s keening wail over and over again. Nope: it simply doesn’t work.
Jack’s quest to find a truthful-sounding, blood-curdling scream for the B-slasher provides the jumping-off point for Blow Out, director Brian De Palma’s mind-melting thriller murder,...

As far as the cinema scene is concerned, The Lord of the Rings trilogy essentially put the fantasy genre back on the map. After years and years of uninspired, awkward fantasy pictures filled with tired cliches and naff renderings of mystical lands, strange creatures and magic that just plainly didn’t gel, New Zealand director Peter Jackson made fantasy cool again with his outright epic adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s most famous series of novels.
Jackson’s approach was, essentially, to bring Tolkien’s books to life as something akin to a more realistic, hack and slash-styled action movie franchise; less “fantastical” and a whole lot grittier (with a violent edge to match). This turned out to be something of an overall masterstroke, of course – people were blown away when the first flick, The Fellowship of the Ring, hit theatres back in 2001 – the...

It’s hard to imagine what the world of movies was like before Jack Sparrow. Over the course of four films (with another on the way) the character has become a cultural icon, and pretty much single-handedly brought in $5.4 billion at the global box office.
Though Johnny Depp is often criticized for the way his portrayal of the pirate has leaked into other roles and taken over his acting career, there’s no denying that he’s incredibly fun to watch when he’s playing Sparrow. And let’s not forget, the role may have become a bit of a schtick now, but it gained him an Oscar nomination when The Curse of the Black Pearl came out in 2003.

Jack Osbourne was ready to talk after his "Dancing with the Stars" debut in the Season 17 premiere -- and not just about dancing. The TV personality had things to say about Sharon Osbourne's affair with Jay Leno and Jack's own battle with multiple sclerosis.
As it turns out, Sharon's long-ago relationship is pretty much an Osbourne family joke. When asked about Leno and his mother, Jack simply laughed. "We've known about that for years," he said. "That's been no hidden secret. It's been a go-to joke around the house. We don't let her get away lightly from that one!"
This just goes to show -- yet again -- that the Osbournes are an odd sort of family.

Have we seen the last of one of the most legendary actors in American cinema? A sad report on Sept. 4 claimed that Jack was done for good because of memory issues, but is that the truth?
Jack Nicholson may have more iconic roles than any other actor around. But at the age of 76 — and after not starring in a movie since 2010 — retirement is a real, serious possibility. So is the Batman actor actually hanging it up?
Jack Nicholson: Retiring Because Of Memory Issues?
“Jack has — without fanfare — retired,” a source told Radar Online at Sept. 4. The report alleged that Jack was giving up acting because of memory issues.
“There is a simple reason behind his decision — it’s memory loss. Quite frankly, at 76, Jack has memory issues and can no longer remember the lines being asked of him. His memory isn’t what it used to be.”
However, soon...

Philip looks back at BBC series Adam Adamant Lives!, from the creators of Doctor Who, and asks what legacy it left in its stead...
“So clever... but oh, so vulnerable.”
In 1965 the creators of Doctor Who, Sydney Newman and Verity Lambert, moved on to develop the next big thing for the BBC. Adam Adamant Lives! would be developed, in part, as a response to one of the Time Lord’s greatest opponents – Mary Helen Lovejoy Whitehouse.
To address Whitehouse’s criticisms about the decline of moral standards in TV, Sydney Newman imagined a series with a Victorian or Edwardian hero whose ethics could be contrasted with those of the swinging sixties. As legend has it, Newman was staring out of his office window at building works when he imagined the workmen unearthing a long lost hero (similar but surely preferable to the racist spaceship...

Chicago – Nothing bugs a critic more than obstacles strategically placed in the path of otherwise happy characters. Without the conspiratorial manipulations of the plot, these people would have no problem leading perfectly content lives. Instead of emerging organically from the characters themselves, the conflict swoops in like a speeding car fresh off the highway.

That’s more or less what happens in the opening moments of Glenn Gaylord’s “I Do,” as a suave, good-natured Brit, Peter (Grant Bowler), is hit by a car upon leaving a New York restaurant with his pregnant wife, Mya (Alicia Witt), and brother, Jack (David W. Ross). Since Jack’s primary character flaw is that he’s too nice, he spends the next seven years raising his adorable niece, Tara (Jessica Tyler Brown), with Mya, while putting his personal life entirely on hold. Jack may have come off as a maddeningly idealized saint...

Fox has one of its better slates coming your way with the new season, especially if you take the midseason shows into account. Some of these shows may not jump out at you now as must-see, but some of them are going to take over, if I’m any judge anyway.
Clear showcase offerings Dads, Almost Human, and Us & Them are guaranteed to take off early. Almost Human has J.J. Abrams recognition to pull people in, though it looks to be a show that could flounder after a few episodes, even if I hope it doesn’t. The other two are going to become hits. Unfortunately, we have to wait until mid-season for the Gavin & Stacey remake.
Rake also looks like a winner, as long as the translation can be made to work as an Americanized product, and the show actually delivers what made the Australian original so brilliant.

While you might think the death of a principal character in a season finale would be the big game changer, it was a confession on "Revenge" that will turn a big part of the show on its head next season. The two-hour finale spent much of its focus on Conrad's election win.
It was a win somewhat tainted by the fact that he blew up his own campaign headquarters, in an attempt to kill Jack Porter. Unfortunately, though he probably doesn't care much about collateral damage, it was Declan who was there. He was looking for Charlotte, having recently learned that she was pregnant. Declan was seriously injured in the explosion, and died later at the hospital. What is with this show killing off one parent of every new baby?
Conrad also revealed to Victoria that there is no Initiative, at least not in the sense she thinks. The Graysons...

You won't be seeing John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness in the "Doctor Who" 50th anniversary special for one very simple (but surprising) reason: He wasn't asked.
“Everyone on Twitter tries to make it like it’s my decision, but the bottom line is I was not asked,” Barrowman told TVLine. “[The Powers That Be] don’t want to put Jack in it. And I know fans are really upset about it, as was I."
The Huffington Post's request for comment from BBC America was not immediately returned.
Barrowman originated the role of Captain Jack when "Doctor Who" began its current run in 2005. The character went on to star in his own spinoff "Torchwood," which migrated from BBC Three to BBC Two to BBC One, and then became a co-production of BBC One and Starz for its fourth season.
Captain Jack may not be in the "Doctor Who" 50th anniversary special, but there will be plenty of familiar faces.

Jack may kill at the box office, but Giant Slayer lacks magic. So much about director Bryan Singer’s CGI-heavy adventure Jack the Giant Slayer is familiar. There are magic beans that sprout into a sky-high stalk once they get wet. A brave farmhand named Jack (Nicholas Hoult) climbs the stalk and comes face-to-face with the race of giants who reside in a magical land above the clouds. True to the needs of a Hollywood blockbuster adventure, screenwriters Darren Lemke, who co-wrote Shrek Forever After, Christopher McQuarrie, Dan Studney and David Dobkin keep the trademark ‘Fee Fi Fo Fum’ but switch out familiar staples from the longstanding British folk tale like the magic harp and a hen that lays golden eggs with a pretty princess named Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson) who’s trapped atop the beanstalk, royal soldiers who set out to save her (Ewan McGregor, Eddie Marsan) and her conniving...

In 2010, rival studios watched with envy as Disney’s Alice in Wonderland earned more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Before long, a new wave of fairy-tale adaptations got the green light, but of the resulting films, only Snow White and the Huntsman did well, grossing nearly $400 million here and abroad — and even that was considered a mediocre finish given the film’s $170 million budget. Other fairy tale films, including Red Riding Hood, Mirror Mirror and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, all fizzled. Now, with Jack the Giant Slayer due March 1, there are concerns that the 3-D adventure starring Nicholas Hoult...

I believe this is trailer #3 for A Good Day to Die Hard or, as most people will be referring to it, "That new Die Hard movie." The film is set to hit theaters on February 14 and features Bruce Willis once again as John McClane and this time he's teamed up with his son Jack, played by Jai Courtney, whom anyone that saw Jack Reacher is already acquainted. A Good Day to Die Hard puts McClane on an international stage, and introduces his estranged son Jack. An apple that has not fallen far from the tree, Jack may even be more of a hardass than his father. With Bruce Willis getting some of the best reviews of his career with "Looper," it seems as good a time as any for the star to return to his most famous role, as John McClane. And right on cue, the first trailer for the fifth installment of the 'Die Hard' franchise, "A Good Day to Die Hard," has arrived online via Yahoo. Starring Willis alongside "Spartacus" star Jai Courtney as his son Jack, as well as Sebastian Koch, Cole Hauser, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anne Vyalitsyna and Julia Snigir, the film sees McClane and son in Moscow, grappling with some bad guys of indeterminate origins and motivations (at least at this stage). The trailer doesn't reveal much about plot, but the press release does say that of Courtney's character "Jack may even be more of a hardass than his father. Spartacus star Jai Courtney is playing Jack McClane, the son of John McClane (Bruce Willis) and he spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming film. While he wasn't forthcoming about the villains in the movie, he did have this to say: “That’s the thing about the Die Hard franchise, John’s always a fish out of water. What could be further out of water for him than Russia?… The relationship isn’t always functional. These are two guys who have been estranged for some time. John likes to wing it, see what happens. Jack’s more of a strategist.” A Good Day to Die Hard puts McClane on an international stage, truly a NYC fish out of water in Moscow, and introduces his estranged son Jack (Jai Courtney). Chicago – John Hillcoat’s “Lawless,” based on Matt Bondurant’s “The Wettest County in the World,” is one of the most high profile disappointments of 2012, a film with an amazing cast that suffocates under the weight of an inconsistent script, a boring lead, and a complete lack of narrative drive. Who would have ever guessed that a movie with so many charismatic actors and actresses could ever be so shockingly dull? It’s nearly an accomplishment.
Rating: 1.5/5.0
Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska – any one of these wonderful actors typically makes a film better and one could easily assume that having all five of them in one ensemble would lead to dramatic gold. And yet even this level of acting talent can’t save “Lawless.” None of them do anything particularly wrong (although Pearce makes some odd choices) but they can’t save a haphazard script...
