The path that Free Guy took to make it into theaters was not your ordinary one, and that was even before it encountered a pair of Covid-related delays. As producer/director Shawn Levy said the film, which starred Ryan Reynolds as a character living within a video game, went through two studios on its way to the big screen, which made for some nervous moments and some big breakthroughs. Jillian G. on Peacock‘s Killing It is an absolute bada**.
The sweet Aussie turned python hunter adds new skills to her mysterious background – ninja fighter. Actor Claudia O’Doherty, who embodies Jillian in the sweetly hilarious series, is doing her own stunts this season and loving every minute of it.
The onion layer peeled back on Killing It Season 2 is that no one should mess with Jillian G. and that she has some shocking self-defense moves, stunts that O’Doherty performed herself this season.
“I did do my own stunts, which I’m shocked to say,” O’Doherty told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “Well, no, look, I did a lot of my own stunts. I had a great stunt woman as well who did the really hard stuff that I absolutely could not do. But I was shocked by the amount that I did do.

All Rights Reserved If the name of the new CBS series True Lies sounds familiar to you, that’s because it’s a small-screen reimagining of the 1994 Arnold Schwarzenegger film of the same name about a spy who lives a double life as a mild-mannered family man. Stepping into Schwarzenegger’s shoes to play the role on TV is Shameless/Reba actor Steve Howey, who told us that shooting an action series is unlike anything he’s done before … and a bit painful. We’ve heard of being married to your job, but this is ridiculous. True Lies wouldn’t have it any other way. Based on James Cameron’s hit 1994 movie, CBS‘ breezily enjoyable action-comedy series remake feels like Alias on helium, leaning into the goofy premise where saving the world can take a back seat to unclogging the sink in a home where the master bathroom turns out to be a secret safe room. (Credit: Alan Markfield/CBS ©2021 CBS Broadcasting) While lacking the megastar wattage of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis, charismatic series leads Steve Howey (Shameless) and Ginger Gonzaga (She-Hulk) are absurdly gorgeous as suburban parents Harry and Helen Tasker. For 17 years, superspy Harry has lied to the family (including two so-far generic adolescents) with his cover identity as a humdrum computer salesman who’s on the road a lot. When Helen suspects he’s having an affair, Harry...

James Cameron’s 1994 blockbuster action comedy True Lies inspired CBS’s upcoming primetime drama of the same name. The series subs in Steve Howey (Shameless) in place of the film’s Arnold Schwarzenegger as Harry, the suburban husband who leads a secret life as an international spy. Jamie Lee Curtis played Harry’s wife, Helen, who discovered her hubby’s secret and got pulled into the spy game. Ginger Gonzaga (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) takes on the role of Helen in the series premiering on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at 10pm Et/Pt.
Joining Steve Howey as Harry and Ginger Gonzaga as Helen in season one are Erica Hernandez as Maria, Omar Miller as Gib, Mike O’Gorman as Luther, Annabella Didion as Dana, and Lucas Jaye as Jake.
Episode one guest stars include Beverly D’Angelo, Carlo Rota, Andy Martin, Beverly D’Angelo, Andrea Laing, Deneen Tyler, Ray Gaspard, and Liann Pattison.

The secret sauce for James Cameron’s 1994 blockbuster action comedy True Lies was right there in the film’s tagline: “When he said I do, he never said what he did.” The Arnold Schwarzenegger–Jamie Lee Curtis hit about a wife who finds out her “computer salesman” husband is actually a top government spy — and then joins him on a perilous mission — took a 29-year path to this TV adaptation (a 2017 Fox pilot fizzled), but executive producer–writer Matt Nix’s (Burn Notice) reboot may be worth the wait. The series follows Harry and Helen Tasker, played with fiery chemistry by Steve Howey (Shameless) and Ginger Gonzaga (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law), who redefine “till death do us part” after Helen also becomes part of U.S. spy agency Omega Sector and proves quite adept at beating back baddies. Photo: Alan Markfield/CBS ©2021 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved Inspired by James Cameron’s hit action/comedy film of the same name, True Lies follows Harry Tasker (Steve Howey), a first-class international spy for U.S. intelligence agency Omega Sector, and his wife, Helen (Ginger Gonzaga), a language professor bored with her daily routine, who makes the shocking discovery that her seemingly ordinary husband is leading an extraordinary double life. With the secret out, Omega recruits Helen, who impresses everyone with her formidable skills (thanks to Tae Bo and yoga), and she joins Harry and his team of top-notch operatives, embarking on covert missions around the globe and an exhilarating life of danger and adventure – all while keeping their adventures a secret from their children. The renewed bond between them adds much-needed sizzle to the Taskers’ emotionally distant marriage and upends the top-secret world of Omega Sector. But, as Harry says,...

Director Shawn Levy’s latest film, Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds, manages to explore the human condition and the importance of relationships while simultaneously providing an entertaining and engaging experience that is atypical of other summer blockbuster type fare.
The main character of the film is Guy (Reynolds), a non-descript bank teller stuck in a rut wherein he does the same exact thing every day, again and again. That is, until he passes a beautiful woman on the street (Jodie Comer) and immediately becomes determined to change the path of his own life in the hopes of finding her again. Of course, this proves more difficult than it sounds as Guy is only an ostensible “free guy” and is actually a fictional background character in a world-wide virtual reality video game. Now, determined to find the mysterious woman of his dreams and be the man worthy of her, Guy goes...

The Summer season is “fun and games” time at the local multiplex. Oh, but you’re thinking, “Isn’t it always”. Well, sure many still have big arcade areas around their entrances. Yes, but we’re talking about the content on the individual screens. And, after a year trying to entertain ourselves at home, the reopening (hopefully) studio flicks are reflecting much of that “home content”. As usual (in the “fun” category) we’re seeing the comic book-based blockbusters with recent entries The Suicide Squad and Black Widow from several weeks ago (but still on the entertainment page). and a big flick was actually based on a toy, as the action figure Snake Eyes emerged from the decades-long GI Joe toy franchise.

“Let’s get those energy levels up guys… let’s just get this done!” Shawn Levy is in motivational mode. The Night At The Museum director is cajoling his crew via megaphone for another action-packed take on the set of his new movie, Free Guy—it’s nearly the end of the working day, and the finish line is in sight.
The scene is reset, and a worn-out Ryan Reynolds–looking decidedly un-badass in a pastel blue Henley t-shirt and beige chinos—psyches himself up for another highly choreographed fight sequence. His opponent? A very badass-looking stuntwoman in combat pants, leather jacket, and sunglasses, pistol at the ready.
As soon as Levy yells “Action!,” though, Reynolds flips the switch into action hero mode, throwing himself into some impressively complex—and lightning fast—gun-fu, before the weapons are tossed aside and the fists start flying. Appearances, it seems, can be deceptive.

The first full trailer for "X-Men: Apocalypse" dropped this morning, and it's bursting with new characters, explosive action sequences, and a feeling of dread that can really only be applied to a film with "Apocalypse" for a subtitle.
The literally-dark mood certainly suggests the end of days, and the clip begins with Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) waking with a start, telling Professor X (James McAvoy) that she "saw the end of the world," littered with death. X assures her it was just a dream, but it turns out to be a very real nightmare soon enough.
Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), believed to be the first-ever mutant, has awakened from an ancient sleep, and makes quick work of taking over the minds of several mutants, harnessing Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Angel (soon-to-be-Archangel, Ben Hardy), and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) into his own version of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Big "X-Men" news broke out at New York Comic Con today, where the official plot synopsis for "X-Men: Apocalypse" was finally revealed.
In an unsurprising reveal for fans who have been following rumors about the flick, Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique/Raven is playing a key central role -- which should make a nice swan song for her character should Lawrence make good on her pronouncement that she's leaving the series after "Apocalypse" bows. (Then again, she may change her mind.)
Here's the synopsis:
Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel's X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible.
Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order,...

Chicago – After a string of superhero movie disappointments in recent memory, last month “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” renewed our faith in Hollywood blockbusters once again. Just 7 weeks later, can “X-Men: Days of Future Fast” impress us again?
Not only does it deliver, but it manages to pull together the tastiest ingredients of its strong subject matter and dish up one of the best films in its franchise history. The film – with its $200 million production budget – has already earned back $36 million in its first day of release to nearly 4,000 domestic theatres.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The new X-Men film follows 6 others in the last 14 years – one, in fact, as recent as 10 months ago. These 6 previous films have been hit or miss. “The Wolverine” in 2013 was a lukewarm hit, “X-Men: First Class” was a hit in 2011, we saw a mega miss in 2009 with “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” a miss in 2006 with “X-Men: The Last Stand,...

The new X-men: Days Of Future Past viral marketing campaign ties Erik Lehnsherr (Young Magneto) to the JFK assassination in November 1963. In this fictional experience, Magneto was connected and implicated in a mutant plot to assassinate President John F. Kennedy, thus being a “point of contention between humans and mutants ever since.”
In a mock interview, Magneto spoke to a reporter for the first time in fifty years.
“Whoever said that was Oswald in that warehouse?” he says. His voice is low. “And whoever said the killer was a man? And whoever said I wanted Kennedy dead because my brothers and sisters were being killed?”
He sneers.
“Humans,” he says, disgusted.

Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger team up again in this first trailer for Escape Plan.
Previously known as The Tomb, the film is directed by Mikael Håfström and also stars Jim Caviezel, Vincent D’Onofrio, Amy Ryan, Vinnie Jones and Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson.
In this action-packed thriller, Roy Breslin (Stallone), the world’s foremost expert on security, must team with a prisoner named Church (Schwarzenegger), to escape from the most impregnable penitentiary ever built, a prison he himself helped design.
Roy Breslin is the very best at what he does – he helps improve security at the world’s most secure prisons by posing as an inmate and escaping from them. So far he’s batting 1000. But everything changes when he’s double-crossed and finds himself incarcerated, for real this time, deep within a virtually escape-proof prison inside a tanker in the middle of the ocean!

Chicago – Rife with corruption and injustice, the setting for “Broken City” could have been picked from a litter of U.S. metropolitans. Said star Mark Wahlberg in a recent red-carpet interview with HollywoodChicago.com, it’s not Chicago.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The Windy City most certainly isn’t “broken,” Wahlberg says, though he did highlight our issues with gang violence and the inner city – adding that he’s vehemently behind Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
Instead, “Broken City” centers on New York City. Director Allen Hughes said in our Jan. 6, 2013 red-carpet interview – amid a mob of Chicago fans – that the backdrop of The Big Apple was chosen because it’s “modern-day Rome”.
Read Adam Fendelman’s full review of “Broken City”.
He added: “It’s emblematic of the world and represents our capitol.” Hughes says he chose the project because it’s strongly “character and narrative based”. When asked about honest politicians and whether they exist,...

Check out the new trailer for director Allen Hughes Broken City.
Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) has a promising career as a New York City cop until the night he is involved in a controversial shooting. Stripped of his badge, but kept out of jail by New York’s popular Mayor (Russell Crowe), he re-makes himself as a private investigator.
Times are tough, and when the mayor offers Billy $50,000 to investigate the First Lady’s (Catherine Zeta Jones) extra-marital activities, it seems like a straight forward payday. Unfortunately, it quickly becomes apparent that the Mayor is not at all what he seems, and for Billy to achieve redemption he will have to risk everything — possibly even his freedom.
Always a tad jarring to see Crowe dressed in everyman’s attire. I’m more for seeing him in historical/period piece garb. Part of the Hughes Brothers directing team, Allen Hughes has...

Our first look at Jack Abel as Ian O’Shea in The Host has hit the web via EW. Stephenie Meyer’s follow-up of her Twilight Saga novels takes a more science fiction bent and stars Saoirse Ronan. The Host is directed by Andrew Niccol who definitely has a handle of Sf, and I think was kind of a coup as pick-up to helm this movies. He not only directs the film, but he also wrote the screenplay. Niccol wrote The Truman Show and Gattaca, and is credited for “story” for Terminal. He also wrote and directed Lord of War, a film that I didn’t think was terrible and seemed to get hit with the just dislike whatever Nic Cage is in syndrome of the time (which may still be going on).

Chicago – Australian actor Alex Russell has a penchant for exploring the darker sides of the teenage psyche. He made his film debut as a loathsome bully in Ben C. Lucas’ “Wasted on the Young,” before landing a lead role in Josh Trank’s surprise hit, “Chronicle,” about three teens who suddenly acquire superpowers and are excited by the dangerous magnitude of their mysterious abilities.
The dynamic between high school buddies Matt (Russell), Andrew (Dane DeHaan) and Steve (Michael B. Jordan) feels wholly authentic, and Trank finds ingenious ways of fusing in-camera effects with the naturalistic visual style inherent in the found footage genre. Chicagoans who missed the film during its initial theatrical run this year will be able to catch it at midnight June 8th and June 9th at the Music Box Theatre.

Michael Ealy, Taraji P. Henson, Think Like a Man Think Like a Man, inspired by TV/radio comedian Steve Harvey’s bestselling book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, dethroned Gary Ross / Jennifer Lawrence’s The Hunger Games at the North American box office this weekend. The Hunger Games, in fact, was down two spots, also trailing the Zac Efron / Taylor Schilling romantic drama The Lucky One, based on Nicholas Sparks‘ bestselling novel. All three films performed above expectations. According to box-office actuals found at Box Office Mojo, Think Like a Man took in a surprisingly strong $33.63 million — about 10% above early estimates released as late as Friday night — averaging a highly impressive $16,693 per-theater at 2,017 locations. It has become distributor Sony Pictures/ScreenGems’ biggest hit targeted at black Americans, surpassing the Beyoncé Knowles‘ 2009 movie Obsessed, which earned $28.6 million (approx. $29.8 million today). Sony had been (officially) predicting a $17 million opening weekend,...

Zac Efron, The Lucky One Think Like A Man Box Office: Strong Overperformer At no. 2 on Friday, the Zac Efron romantic melodrama The Lucky One collected $9.13 million at 3,115 sites (about 1,000 more locations than Think Like a Man), averaging a good $2,894 per-venue according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. The Lucky One is expected to score somewhere between $22-25 million by Sunday evening. Best known as the leading lady in the nearly universally panned film adaptation of Ayn Rand's sprawling libertarian novel Atlas Shrugged: Part 1, Taylor Schilling plays Zac Efron's love interest in this nearly universally panned adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' tearjerking novel. Even though this may sound bad for Schilling, it's not — at all. The Lucky One was a smart, high-profile career move following Atlas Shrugged, a critical and box-office disaster admired only by the American far-right. The Lucky One has a dismal 16% approval rating...

Gabrielle Union, Jerry Ferrara, Think Like a Man The Hunger Games is no longer the no. 1 movie at the North American box office. After four consecutive weekends on top, Gary Ross' movie adaptation of Suzanne Collins' novel was down two spots at no. 3 on Friday. At no. 2 was the Zac Efron / Taylor Schilling romantic drama The Lucky One, based on Nicholas Sparks' bestselling novel. Both films performed above expectations. According to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo, Think Like a Man took in $12.2 million — about 10% above early estimates released last night — thus averaging a highly impressive $6,055 per-theater at 2,017 locations on Friday. Michael Ealy, Think Like a Man The Hunger Games has lost the box-office crown at the North American box office. After four weekends on top, Gary Ross' film version of Suzanne Collins' bestselling novel has been beaten by two new entries: Tim Story's comedy Think Like a Man, based on the bestselling book by TV/radio comedian Steve Harvey and whose target audience are Us blacks, and the Zac Efron / Taylor Schilling romantic drama The Lucky One, based on a bestselling Nicholas Sparks novel and aimed at American / Canadian teenagers and young women, and their boyfriends and/or gal pals (regardless of ethnicity, apparently, though both leads are white). As per early, rough estimates found at Deadline.com, Think Like a Man may reach $30 million at 2,017 theaters this weekend after taking in $11 million on Friday. Distributor Sony Pictures/ScreenGems had been (officially) predicting $17 million. Believe their "prediction" at your own risk.

Chicago – I’m of two minds about the work of Nicholas Sparks. On one hand, I admire his sensitive portrayals of good-hearted people, particularly young lovers, which serve as comfort food for teenagers overwhelmed by peer pressure. On the other hand, I’m also the guy who said the following about his last book-to-screen adaptation, “The Last Song”: “You may need a lump in your head before you can get one in your throat.”
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Like any successful author, Sparks knows his target audience extremely well. Yet the rigidity of his reliable formula has become so predictable and repetitive that it threatens to bore even his most ardent fans. I saw “The Lucky One” in a theater filled with Sparks fans, and I was surprised by the number of derisive laughs that it inspired. That reaction starkly contrasted with the simultaneous sniffle that I heard erupt from a packed...

Chicago – The belief that most people are decent at heart may seem overly naive in a society that often favors cynicism over sincerity. Yet it is precisely this hopeful worldview that has made Nicholas Sparks one of the most successful authors of his time. His international bestsellers have captivated readers worldwide, and have inspired seven big screen adaptations.
The latest is “The Lucky One,” starring Zac Efron as a Marine named Logan who stumbles upon a picture of a beautiful young woman, Beth (Taylor Schilling), that functions as a sort of good luck charm during his tour in Iraq. Once he’s back in America, he embarks on a search to find the woman who may be his destiny. Hollywood Chicago spoke with Sparks about the challenges of adapting his novels into screenplays, his goal to create strong female characters and the real-life romance that has enhanced each of his wildly popular stories.

'Tis the season to be jolly despondent that the forecast for brand-new network fare looks relatively bleak from now until the New Year. But then again, my DVR could use a little vacation, considering it's been worked harder than an Anna Wintour assistant for most of 2009. Back in September, I publicly announced my intention to break up with Grey's Anatomy and Masterpiece Mystery, but while I indeed made good on my promise to axe those series from my DVR's "series recording" list (as well as The Mentalist), I ended up adding a whopping seven new series to my regular rotation...

Chicago – The mid-life crisis of the modern man is mostly about ego - as the body goes downhill and the role of the alpha male is supplanted by a new version of himself, men kind of fall apart as they realize that their peak has arguably passed. Why would such an individual experience make for intriguing drama? Using the mid-life crisis as a jumping off point for drama would require some seriously well-drawn characters, the kind of guys who you root to come to terms with passing over that hill. “Men of a Certain Age” does not yet have those characters.

It looks like this show is about to get really, really good. Everything we wanted to happen is: Elena has pieced together the truth about Stefan (cue the flashback montage!), Bonnie is ready to accept who she is (enter Grandma Jasmine Guy, which made me feel as old as the first time I heard someone say they were born in the '80s), and Vicki should be dead (drink, Damon, drink!). Yes! So, we knew Damon would get out of that basement dungeon sooner rather than later. This show could not survive without his biting dark wit, even if Stefan...

With the start of September just days away, I'm looking to fall. And fall means TV for me. Naturally. This morning I took the liberty of printing out a fall TV schedule and highlighting every hour of television that I'm interested in watching. Well, at least, highlighted the shows I want to give the good old college try to watching. Needless to say, the page was rather covered in yellow. It sounds sick, but it was a full 32 hours in total. Yes, I said 32! (Hey, it's my job!) And, as usual, I discovered -- horror of all horrors! -- that my dual-band DVR won't be able to fully serve my TV needs during several time slots. Like, for instance, Wednesday at 9 p.m. is a situation: I've gotta watch Fox's Glee and I want to give ABC's new comedies Modern Family and Cougar Town a try. And then, there is...

While writing this review, I became unstuck in time. Suddenly, I was seeing stars on Halloween 1988 in New York City, then shooting off to Australia to meet people in February 1993 followed by Christmas caroling edged with snowflakes in 1974 West Virginia. Before I knew what I was doing, I was watching The Hunger in a Manhattan screening room in 1983. And then Chicago, briefly, in the 1990s, don’t know exactly when—July something. The women kept changing. But they were the same in that they all married someone else, not me. What’s up with that?

Or more likely done (or maybe not done or will yet do)? I blame time travel. You see, in studying time travel romance (as presented in this movie), I have discovered/will discover that going missing at (in)convenient times can stress a relationship. “Honey, can you take out the trash?...
