If there are franchises that have played a significant role in promoting strong female characters, then, Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean has played a crucial role in showcasing such characters. These characters have broken away from traditional gender roles, and brought a unique development to the film, by complementing the male characters of the film, which made the series much more layered and engaging.

The live-action TV series based on the Goosebumps books written by R.L. Stine that was released through the Disney+ and Hulu streaming services last October (read our review Here) drew inspiration from five of Stine’s Goosebumps stories. More Stine stories will be brought to the screen in Goosebumps season 2 – but the show is taking the anthology route, so we can expect a second season that has “an entirely new cast and setting based on Stine’s iconic Scholastic book series,” and won’t pick up on the season 1 cliffhanger that involved a character appearing to be possessed. That’s where author Kate Howard steps in, as she has been hired to write a Goosebumps season 1 novelization that will not only cover the story told in the show’s episodes but also include “additional scenes and information not seen on the show, including resolving the show’s cliffhanger ending!”

Building upon the existing franchises is never exactly easy. Fans already have expectations based on the previous creator’s vision; there’s already an established tone of voice and setting to defer to; and overall, people don’t take kindly to reboots, remakes, and “new chapters” when it comes to their favorite fictional worlds.
But Pirates of the Caribbean bosses are feeling increasingly optimistic about their idea of rebooting the iconic franchise without its lead star, Johnny Depp.
PotC Producer Reveals Two New Movies
As controversial as the decision to move into the new era of Pirates without Depp has proven to be, Disney doesn’t seem inclined to back down from it. Recently, Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer of all the existing PotC movies, sat down with EW to discuss the franchise’s future — and he had some intriguing updates to share.

The Disney+ series “Goosebumps” is coming back for a brand new second season that will feature a new cast, new setting, and new story, which means we won’t be revisiting the characters and/or storylines introduced in the show’s first season. Not on screen, at least.
Bloody Disgusting has learned that Scholastic Inc. will release Goosebumps: The Haunting Returns on October 1, a young adult novelization of the Disney+ series’ first season.
Scholastic previews, “Discover what happens to Isaiah, Margot, Nathan, and the rest of the folks in Port Lawrence in this official Goosebumps novel based on the hit Disney Plus series!
“Thirty years ago, Harold Biddle died in a tragic accident — but there’s more to the story. Now, the teenage kids of Harold’s classmates are determined to find out what happened to him all those years ago…as long as Harold’s spirit doesn’t exact his revenge first!

The 2003 premiere of The Curse of the Black Pearl launched the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, a series of movies that soon became one of the most popular franchises of all time and was a massive success for Disney. The franchise was led by one of the biggest stars of that period, Johnny Depp, whose charismatic appearance as Jack Sparrow became a pillar of pop culture. While we cannot deny that the overall quality of the movies dropped by the time the fifth movie was released, as a whole, it is still one of the most popular franchises of all time. Now, it has been seven years since the last movie in the series, and while we did know that Disney was working on reviving the franchise, we did not know – due to conflicting reports – what they were working on.

While the franchise started losing its appeal as time passed, Disney still found massive success with its Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
Johnny Depp deserves much of the credit for that, but Amber Heard's allegations of domestic violence and a series of messy court battles led to Disney scrapping plans for a sixth movie. Depp's Hollywood career was put on hold and the studio went back to the drawing board with the franchise.
It's unclear exactly who is developing the next iteration, though the expectation is that the spotlight will shift to another character in place of the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow.
Talking to Et Online, Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer made it clear that, he at least, is willing to bring Depp back into the fold.
"If it was up to me, of course. I love having Depp," he said. "He's a great actor and good friend.

We’ve known for a while that another ‘weird’ Pirates Of The Caribbean movie is coming, and Margot Robbie is still involved too.
Here’s an update on a story that we’ve been reporting on now for a good few years. It’s zigged and zagged a few times since then, but according to series producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, a Pirate Of The Caribbean film starring Margot Robbie in a female-centric movie is still happening.
We first heard about this project all the way back in 2020. Apparently, Disney had plans to make two very different Pirates Of The Caribbean movies to continue the popular swashbuckling series that already boasts six films. The plans back in 2020 were to develop a female-led version which would be headlined by Margot Robbie alongside another ‘weird’ film with an all-new cast. The latter version was based on a script penned by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott,...

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, “Pirates of the Caribbean” producer Jerry Bruckheimer seemingly confirmed a couple of things. Firstly, it sounds like Johnny Depp is not returning for “Pirates of the Caribbean,” even if Bruckheimer wants it. Secondly, it seems Disney may indeed move forward with Margo Robbie’s film as well.
We also learned that Jeff Nathanson, who wrote the last “Pirates of the Caribbean” film in 2017 is writing the reboot. At this point the third act is great but the first and second act need more work.
He told EW, “I think he’s cracked it,” Bruckheimer remarks. “He’s got an amazing third act. We just gotta clean up the first and second and then we’ll get there. But he wrote a great, great third act.”
The script is in play, but does that mean Johnny Depp will return?
Bruckheimer makes it sound unlikely.

There have been hot and cold reports about the future of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise over the past few years. Some had a reboot happening with an entirely new cast, others a female-centric film with Margot Robbie. Now, Jerry Bruckheimer is setting the record straight.
“It’s two different movies,” Bruckheimer says. The reboot has Jeff Nathanson doing the script with the Robbie-centric film being written by Christina Hodson, according to Entertainment Weekly, which caught up with the producer. “We hope to get ’em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too.”
The Last of Us creator Craig Mazin worked on a story for the reboot with original screenwriter Ted Elliot. Mazin told the L.A. Times that their script was very weird and that Disney seemed to like it. But the project stalled because of the strikes last year.

“Pirates of the Caribbean” producer Jerry Bruckheimer has provided more clarity on the current state of the Disney adventure franchise. He already teased in March that a total reboot was going to be the first “Pirates” movie out of the gate in the future because “it’s easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.” This reboot is now confirmed to have writer Jeff Nathanson attached. Bruckheimer announced the news in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Nathanson also wrote the screenplay for the last “Pirates” movie, 2017’s “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” which was directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. Rønning and Nathanson, as well as Bruckheimer, have reunited on the new Disney biographical drama “Young Woman and the Sea.”

When Disney purchased the 20th Century Fox library in 2019, it caused some consternation among cineastes. The Fox catalog was vast and impressive, containing tons of indelible classics and even more titles waiting deep inside the studio's archive. 20th Century Fox was formed in 1935 and quickly became one of the "big five" studios that dominated the film industry for decades. Fox hadn't seen a shake-up this dramatic since 1985 when ultra-conservative media mogul Rubert Murdoch bought a controlling share of the company from Marvin Davis.
When Disney made its purchase, many film fans wondered if Fox's old classics would be made more widely available through the about-to-launch Disney+. When the streaming service debuted with a paltry 500 titles, cineastes were aghast. Why buy all those Fox titles if you're not going to distribute them?
That, however, was merely the end of the road for Fox. For its 83-year life, the studio went through many massive,...

While Henry Cavill defined Superman for a decade, he has now moved on from the franchise and has been working on new projects. The actor was last seen in Matthew Vaughn’s spy comedy Argylle and is set to feature in the historical action comedy The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. The actor is also working on a Highlander reboot.
During the premiere of the Guy Ritchie directorial, Henry Cavill reportedly made fun of his unlucky streak as Superman. While talking about his collaborations with Ritchie, he mentioned his alleged post-credits scene in the director’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. He also took a dig at his appearance in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam while doing so.

Based on Frank Herbert’s acclaimed novel, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films have raked in commercial profits besides enamoring the viewers with a deft adaptation of a colossal source material. Previous efforts in getting the novel(s) brought to the big screen had rendered the premise largely unfilmable.
It’d be wrong to affirm, though, that all attempts to ‘film’ the saga fell short, as in 2000 and 2003, two three-part miniseries on the Sci-Fi Channel saw the triumphant adaptation of Herbert’s first three novels—a feat nothing short of remarkable.

At the core of the second series, Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune, was a young, pre-breakout James McAvoy, who played Paul’s son Leto II Atreides. All Ryan Gosling needed was a 40-piece orchestra, 62 dancing Kens, over 24 gigantic Barbie heads, four “cameo Kens” and a Guns N’Roses surprise to turn his highly anticipated performance of “Barbie” track “I’m Just Ken” into one of the most unbelievable moments in award show history.
After all the protracted speculation about whether Gosling would perform “I’m Just Ken” at the Oscars, the news broke in late February that he had been confirmed for a song and dance extravaganza. But in fact, Oscars producers had been talking to Gosling for months.
“Ryan Gosling is a true professional, that man — we met with him on Zooms months ago, talking about that performance,” said Molly McNearney, who produced the show with Raj Kapoor, Katy Mullan and Rob Paine. “Greta Gerwig weighed in creatively as well. He was so committed to it. His choreographer, Mandy Moore, is exceptional — she was on all the calls.

Just minutes before the Oscars were set to begin, the show’s producers realized they had a problem: Some of the year’s key A-listers and nominees weren’t inside the Dolby Theatre just yet. The perfect storm of traffic delays, pro-Palestine protests, the first day of daylight saving time and an earlier start time had contributed to the last-minute crunch.
“We were definitely stressed out, because we had to have certain celebrities in their seats,” Oscars producer Molly McNearney — also an EP on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” — tells Variety on Monday morning. “We talk to people in the monologue. And in order to for that to pay off, you want to see their reactions. We were still waiting on five or six people to get into their seats. It was definitely chaotic to get them all in quickly. So we pushed by five minutes, which didn’t feel like too much.

Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell made Oscar history by becoming the two youngest two-time winners in Academy Awards history, as they picked up the best song trophy for a second time Sunday night for “What Was I Made For?,” their contribution to the “Barbie” soundtrack.
The pop-star siblings previously won for “No Time to Die,” the title song for the 2022 James Bond film. At 22, Eilish has now become the youngest two-time winner in Oscar history; at 26, O’Connell is believed to be the second youngest dual winner.
Eilish’s acceptance speech was punctuated with nervous laughter, as she thanked director Greta Gerwig. “I’m so grateful for this song and for this movie and the way it made me feel,” she said. “This goes out to everyone who was affected by this movie.” She thanked her school dance and choir teachers. She also thanked her “best friend Zoe for playing Barbies with me growing up.

Margot Robbie was on hand for the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards over the weekend, where she and her hit film Barbie were nominated.
The blonde beauty was one of many who hit the red carpet, showing off a unique fashion style.
One Below Deck fan looked at Margot’s outfit and was immediately reminded of the hit yachting franchise.
The fan has Below Deck alum Kate Chastain and others laughing at the comparison made between the A-list star and Below Deck Med.
For those who missed it, Margot wore a black and pink design from Schiaparelli that was a mini-dress with a huge bow/train on one side.
In fact, the pink bow thing went over one shoulder, then down one side, puffing out before falling to the floor like a train.

Often hailed as one of the most innovative filmmakers of all time, Werner Herzog, known for Grizzly Man and Aguirre, the Wrath of God, recently shared his viewpoint on Margot Robbie’s Barbie. Last summer, Barbenheimer broke the internet, as both Oppenheimer and Barbie went on to become commercial and critical successes, with the latter becoming the biggest film of the year.
However, the acclaimed filmmaker revealed that he had yet to watch Oppenheimer, but he did watch the opening 30 minutes of Barbie, and Herzog didn’t seem too keen about his experience.

Tom Ackerley and his production company LuckyChap — which he runs alongside wife Margot Robbie — aren’t new to the awards conversation. Their 2020 feature Promising Young Woman won an Oscar for best screenplay, their Netflix series Maid was nominated for three Emmys and their debut production I, Tonya nabbed star Allison Janney an Oscar for best performance in a supporting role. Yet Ackerley is adamant that he never considered Barbie‘s potential for critical success when they began work on the film over four years ago.
“I don’t think we ever go into a movie thinking about its acclaim or awards,” Ackerley tells The Hollywood Reporter. “But I do think that seeing the way the humanity of the story really connected with people — that started shifting our idea of what the movie could be. I think a large part of what made it an ‘awards movie’ was how meaningful it was for viewers.

John Cena had a brief but memorable role in last year’s Barbie. However, if his agency had their way, someone else might have been playing the merman version of Ken alongside Mermaid Barbie Dua Lipa.
The 46-year-old actor revealed that he was advised against accepting the role and explained why he took it anyways during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show.

Speaking to Howard Stern, John explained that his team is small and committed to getting him new roles.
He said that the team has a simple approach: “They’re just going on what they know, and what they know is, ‘This entity, this commodity gravitates towards these things. We should stay in this lane.’”
“But I’m not a commodity. I’m a human being, and I operate under the construct of every opportunity is an opportunity,” John said.

John Cena knows how to wrestle. And he put that skill to good use when he decided to take a role in Barbie despite his agency saying the role of a mermaid was “beneath” him.
Cena appeared on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show on Wednesday and dived into the conflict. Cena said that ultimately it was Margot Robbie who helped bring him on board.
But his agency thought differently about the part.
“I don’t put it past them. They’re just going on what they know,” Cena said. “And what they know is, ‘This entity, this commodity, gravitates towards these things, we should stay in this lane. Ken only has a great day if Barbie looks at him, and John Cena almost missed his chance to have Barbie look at him. The actor’s agents advised him not to take a cameo in last year’s blockbuster Barbie, telling him they thought it might diminish his opportunities for leading roles in future films.
Cena recently told Howard Stern how he was filming Fast X at the same studio as Barbie. He’d read the script and wanted to be in it, but his team thought it wasn’t a good look.

John Cena revealed on “The Howard Stern Show” that an agency advised him not to appear in Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” in a cameo as a mermaid Barbie. The WWE icon and action star was told appearing in “Barbie” might impact future leading roles. Cena refused to listen.
“[The agency is] just going on what they know,” Cena said. “And what they know is, ‘This entity, this commodity gravitates toward these things, we should stay in this lane.’ But I’m not a commodity. I’m a human being, and I operate under the construct of every opportunity is an opportunity.”
Cena was filming his role in “Fast X” on the studio lot right near where the “Barbie” shoot was taking place. He ran into Margot Robbie by accident and she pitched him the idea of coming over to film a little bit for the “Barbie” movie.
“Margot was like, ‘We’ll make you a mermaid.

If John Cena had listened to his manager, he may not have been in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
The actor portrayed a mermaid in a single scene of the Oscar-nominated film. The role was minor, compared to some of the other major actors’ characters, and his manager was worried that would take other chances away from him.
“[The agency is] just going on what they know. And what they know is, ‘This entity, this commodity gravitates toward these things, we should stay in this lane,'” Cena said during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show. “But I’m not a commodity. He recalled reading the script and trying his hardest to be in it, but he was in the middle of production on Fast X and couldn’t find the time to have a larger part in Barbie.

And by “unique,” of course I mean surreal. Witness our Wednesday night discussion of what she was leaning toward in filling out her ballot.

“What didn’t you like about him?” I ask.

Greta Gerwig has finally weighed in on her controversial Oscar snub for Best Director.
Speaking to Time in an interview published this week, the “Barbie” filmmaker – and 2024 Oscar nominee for Best Adapted Screenplay – said she had hoped star Margot Robbie would get recognized for her performance. But, otherwise, Gerwig is happy both she and Robbie, who produced the blockbuster Best Picture nominee, can call themselves Oscar nominees for the film.
“Of course I wanted it for Margot,” Gerwig said. “But I’m just happy we all get to be there together.”
While speaking to the legacy outlet, Gerwig even relayed an anecdote about a friend’s mother, who had perhaps only read headlines about the “Barbie” snubs and didn’t realize Gerwig was an actual nominee.

Settling back into Denis Villeneuve’s exotic sci-fi world gets off to a tense start, with a sudden horns-of-Jericho blast from Hans Zimmer’s score, coupled with a stern warning onscreen: “Power over spice is power over all.” It seems a little unnecessary, since the pursuit of spice — a highly sought-after mind-bending drug — is pretty much the only constant in Frank Herbert’s novels. But it does hammer that point home, lest it get lost, since, being the second part of a trilogy, Dune: Part 2 fits the exact same interstitial slot occupied by The Two Towers in the Lord of the Rings franchise — the necessary but dramatically tantalizing middle bit that gets us to the award-sweeping climax.
Villeneuve embraces the breathing space, and everything he didn’t do in the first, he does here, leaning right into the complicated mythos of the planet Arrakis and its surrounding worlds. Two new...

There are a lot of remarkable directors in Hollywood at the moment but only a few of them have managed to make a mark on the industry as significant as the legendary director, Quentin Tarantino. The Pulp Fiction director is without a doubt one of the most established actors in the industry and he is all set to make his return for one last time with The Movie Critic.

Margot Robbie hopes that 'Barbie' is enjoyed for years to come. The 33-year-old actress played the title role in last year's box office smash and hopes that audiences return to the film – which has been nominated for the Best Picture Oscar – for generations as continued popularity is "the mark" of a successful flick.Margot told IndieWire: "For a movie to stand the test of time is always the goal. And there are movies I still watch, we all rewatch movies from 20, 30, 50, 60 years ago that feel as potent today as it did back then. And that's the mark of a great film. So I really do hope that 'Barbie' is appreciated and still feels relevant in decades to come."The blockbuster captured the imagination around the globe when it was released last summer – with audiences flocking to cinemas dressed in pink – and Margot thinks it was...

Margot Robbie and her husband and producing partner Tom Ackerley had always been honest with Mattel about how they wanted to approach “Barbie” from all sides of the conversation. “But it would always be coming from a place of love and positivity,” said the actress and producer.
When their company LuckyChap pitched the toy giant, it had been going through a sea change with new CEO Ynon Kreiz, and a new direction for the toy line that allowed more room for creativity. “The changes that Mattel made in 2016 made this movie possible,” Robbie said to IndieWire over Zoom. “If we had tried to make this before 2016, before they diversified their Barbie line and called every Barbie ‘Barbie,’ I don’t know how we would’ve built a Barbie Land and everyone in it without just not making a movie we’d really be able to stand behind.”

From possessed puppets to sentient worms, horror author R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps books spooked an entire generation of kids growing up in the 1990s. In this 10-episode series (which drops five episodes on Disney+ and Hulu before switching to weekly installments), the collection’s creepiest tales are brought back to life, all tying into a larger mystery. Five teens—football star Isaiah (EastEnders’ Zach Morris), loner Margot (Isa Briones), sarcastic James (Miles McKenna), daredevil Lucas (Will Price) and shy Isabella (Ana Yi Puig)—each face down one of Stine’s iconic frights in their fictional Pacific Northwest town of Port Lawrence before realizing they’re all fighting the same battle. In the first hour, Isaiah snaps some shots on a haunted Polaroid camera (a plot taken from Stine’s Say Cheese and Die!), which offer a glimpse at a grim future. But it isn’t all campy ghost stories and monster mashes,...

In 2018, Aneesh Chaganty's "Searching" changed the mystery movie game by popularizing the "screen life" thriller, framing its action and ample surprises squarely within the confines of a computer screen. The film followed David (John Cho), a widower on the hunt for his missing teen daughter Margot (Michelle La), and it proved to be a surprise box office hit thanks to its novel concept and a great performance by Cho. With a $75 million box office haul against a shoestring budget, a follow-up film seemed like a no-brainer. That's where "Missing" comes in.
Released in spring 2023, "Missing" doesn't actually have much in common with "Searching" aside from an excellent lead actor, some producers and crew members, and a story about a missing family member. The movie is a standalone sequel, meaning it makes total sense even if you never saw "Searching." But "Missing" is anything but simple; with countless twists and...
