Nunsploitation appears to be alive and well in 2024 with this week’s arrival of Immaculate, a convent-set horror movie that borrows heavily from ’70s Italian horror, the peak era of the exploitation film. Nunsploitation, a subgenre of exploitation films that hit its prime in the late ’70s and early ’80s, often features nuns behaving badly. More importantly, nunsploitation films explore themes of sexual or religious repression, frequently unleashing scathing critiques of the Church through blasphemous imagery and nuns behaving badly.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to nunsploitation horror. These taboo-shattering horror movies have more on their mind than their low-budget exploitation origins suggest.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Alucarda – Cultpix
Directed and co-written by Juan López Moctezuma, this English-language Mexican horror film stars Tina Romero as Alucarda, who was raised by nuns at a repressive Catholic convent.

Some readers might remember when, in 2013, Abel Ferrara’s third feature film, Ms. 45 (1981) was once again released in theaters, reinvigorated by a brand-new, state-of-the-art restoration and with its sound remastered in HD. This re-release, with its first screening held fittingly in New York on Friday, December 13th, demonstrated to audiences the extent to which Ferrara’s controversial and hastily labelled “rape and revenge” film had maintained its aggressive spleen.
While walking home from work, Thana, a mute young woman working as a seamstress in New York City's Garment District, is raped at gunpoint in an alley by a mysterious, masked attacker. She survives and makes her way back to her apartment, where she encounters a burglar and is raped a second time. Thana—her name an allusion to Greek god of death Thanatos—manages to knock her second assailant out, then bludgeons him to death with an iron and carries his body to the bathtub.

Bad Lieutenant was the cover story for the Winter, 1993 edition of Filmmaker — this magazine’s second issue. This feature by Scott Macaulay, with quotes from director Abel Ferrara and screenwriter Zoë Lund, appears online for the first time. ***“No one can kill me. I’m blessed. “They’re gonna show the fucking Driller Killer at the fucking Museum of Modern Art, bro!” That’s one of the first things Abel Ferrara says when you meet him, standing in the lobby of the historical institution, flanked by a publicist and someone from the Italian consulate, surrounded by tour groups of young students ranging from middle-school to high-school age and who, it’s safe to assume, have never seen Ferrara violently drill a hole into another person’s head onscreen. (He also plays the title character.) Or, for that matter,...

If nuns make you nervous, you’re not alone. Whether it’s their distinctive religious attire, their unwavering devotion to a higher power, or their reputation for meting out corporal punishment in Catholic school, it’s hard to deny that there’s something vaguely eerie about them at times. As the new supernatural horror film “The Nun 2” prepares to haunt theaters on Sept. 8, here’s a look at 20 other movie nuns that are guaranteed to give you the creeps.

The Conjuring 2 (2016)
Audiences first met the eerie title character of “The Nun” in the sequel to James Wan’s horror hit “The Conjuring.” Sporting a ghostly complexion, a bad attitude, and a mouthful of rotting fangs that would make Pennywise the clown jealous, the Nun is referred to by several names throughout the film, including the Marquis of Snakes, the Defiler, and the demon Valak.

IndieWire’s Eric Kohn, Hanh Nguyen, David Ehrlich, and Kate Erbland traded notes on “Doctor Strange,” whitewashing, and the current political climate for filmmaking.
In a year where the possibility of electing the first woman president requires the kind of tooth-and-nail brawls usually reserved for wartime, there may be no better movie to epitomize the desire for change in a sexist society than “Ms. 45.” Settling into Abel Ferrara’s 1981 B-movie during the soft launch of Brooklyn’s new Alamo Drafthouse theater last week, I found myself entranced by an angry and decidedly modern revenge movie.
This scrappy tale of a mute woman (Zoe Lund, in a remarkable debut role from a career tragically cut short by drugs) has the ultimate payoff. Persecuted in the workplace, she survives a rape encounter by killing her rapist, taking his gun, and going on a rampage murdering sexist pigs across the grimy alleys of New York City.

Abel Ferrara has been toying with the idea of making a film on the life of late Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini since the early 1990s. The original idea was set to be quite different from the one we’ve got, mind, and would see actress and collaborator Zoe Lund (Ms. 45, Bad Lieutenant) playing a sort-of female version of Pasolini living the life that he did (the project was scrapped when Lund tragically died in 1997).
It’s easy to understand why Ferrara, the enfant terrible of New York cinema, was and is attracted to Pasolini: both men have been accused of peddling exploitation from those who find their work morally objectionable but, conversely, they have also been hailed as genuine auteurs and makers of important art (Pasolini more so than Ferrara, it must be said).
Pasolini chronicles the final 24 hours in the late director, novelist, critic and intellectual’s life.

Prior to making "Ms. 45," among the works of Abel Ferrara was the horror "The Driller Killer" and the porno, "9 Lives Of A Wet Pussy," so the expectation might be that a movie about a mute, meek young woman who gets raped and then exacts revenge on the world around might not be tasteful. But you'd be wrong. The wide-eyed and lovely Zoë Lund leads the film, and yes, she is assaulted and the movie tracks her plans to achieve justice. But what might surprise you is that "Ms. 45," which is definitely a piece of '80s sleaze, is also carefully and considerately shot, with a deep respect for the lead character of Thana, and keen sense of pacing and tension building which pays off satisfyingly. And as you'll see in this exclusive clip, Ferrara has a lot of fun in the movie teasing the audience, while playing with provocative imagery.

Zoë Tamerlis has a habit for revenge in Ms. 45.
From the inimitably ferocious New York filmmaker Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, 4:44 Last Day on Earth) comes his notorious 1981 crime thriller Ms. 45.
The film follows a mute Garment District seamstress played by the late model/actress/musician/screenwriter Zoë Lund (then known, at age 18, as Zoë Tamerlis ) who, after falling victim to multiple unspeakable rapes, unleashes a one-woman homicidal rampage against Gotham’s male population.
A grindhouse favorite that struck a chord with those who grooved on the vigilante aspect of the film in a then crime-ridden New York City, Ms. 45 quickly became a notorious cult favorite, an eye-opening study of a seamy, sticky, pre-Disney-fication Manhattan..

Drafthouse Films has announced that they will be releasing both The Visitor and Ms. 45 to Blu-ray & DVD in March:
“Drafthouse Films, in conjunction with Cinedigm (Nasdaq: Cidm), will bring two of its recent theatrical success stories to Blu-ray and DVD in restored and remastered editions: the wildly ambitious and neglected sci-fi/horror epic The Visitor and Ms. 45, legendary director Abel Ferrara’s gritty, gore-filled New York revenge thriller. The films will arrive, respectively, on March 4 and on March 25, 2014, with SRPs of $29.95 for Blu-ray and $27.95 for DVD. They come packed with bonus material in both formats.
Incredibly ambitious but derided and largely neglected upon its initial release in 1979, The Visitor is an unforgettable assault on reality, a phantasmagoric sci-fi/horror/action hybrid. It doesn't take long into "Ms. 45" to know that you're inside an Abel Ferrara film. Four gunshots announce the title card of the movie, while within the first ten minutes, a young woman gets raped twice—once on the way home from work, pulled into an alley and violated by a masked man, and again in her apartment by a burglar who decides to take her body when she doesn't have any cash. And by the way, she's mute too. Certainly, the indicators are that the man whose previous efforts at the time were the driller killer movie titled, uh, "Driller Killer" and a porno, along with a handful of shorts, wasn't exactly going to be pushing the creative envelope here. But, beneath the provocative opening and imagery is a picture with surprising restraint and a real sense of purpose. And it's rather remarkable how much Ferrara wrings out...

Thana (Zoë Lund) is having a bad day. Not only did she wake up as mute and socially awkward as she was the day before, but she also has the misfortune of being raped twice, by two different men, in completely unrelated incidents. Wrong place, wrong time… Thana is essentially the John McClane of rape victims. The double-barreled assault leaves her understandably traumatized, but instead of going to the police or curling up into a quivering ball Thana picks up a .45 and starts wandering the streets looking for misbehavin’ men. Abel Ferrara‘s Ms .45 has long been considered an exploitation classic, but while it’s often categorized as an early entry in the rape/revenge subgenre only the first half of that is accurate. There’s actually very little revenge to be found here. Instead, the film offers up a violent descent into madness that gives birth to a still mute and even more socially awkward serial...

Bronx-born filmmaker Abel Ferrara considers all of his fiction films to be documentaries: What you see is what happened in the moment that was shot. That mentality informed the making of Ms. 45, Ferrara's characteristically complex 1981 rape-revenge drama. In the film, a mute teenager (Zoë Lund) copes with being raped by gunning down everyone she believes wants to exploit her, including friendly (but pushy) strangers and acquaintances. Ferrara and screenwriter Nicholas St. John's sympathetic but horrified view of Lund's character is informed by their equally conflicted feelings about New York City in 1981. In time for the Alamo Drafthouse's new restoration of Ms. 45, the Voice talked to Ferrara about h...

Everyone and no one wanted to live in New York in the 1980s. Crime had gone through the roof — but the clubs were awesome. As a kid with no money, you might have to crash in a squalid Sro, the kind of place the elderly and impoverished go to die — but if you got on the right lists, you could drink for free every night of the week. Abel Ferrara's weirdly elegant exploitation film Ms. 45, made in 1981 and now being released, uncut and remastered, by Drafthouse Films, takes place in that New York, even though the picture refuses to fall in love with it. Instead, Ms. 45 is in love with its lead actress, a woman named Zoë Lund — it only has eyes for her, and you can see why. She's a beauty beamed from another planet — Venus, maybe — with pill...

It's difficult to locate all that much depth and artistry while picking through the "rape/revenge" films of the 1970s. The psychological hook is obvious: rape is horrific, revenge is cathartic, and the nastier they are, the more the audience will feel some sort of impact. That's how it works in theory, anyway, "Mainstream" Hollywood films like Deliverance and Straw Dogs dealt with on-screen rape in shocking but relatively artistic fashion, whereas exploitation films like Last House on the Left and I Spit On Your Grave were more intent on "rubbing your face" in the ugliness of the subject matter.
Falling somewhere in between those two camps is 1980's Ms. 45, which is both ugly and aggressive (like those indie films) and oddly, sometimes disconcertingly beautiful, powerful and tragic. What starts out as a nasty but familiar story (a mute young NYC woman is raped (twice!) in one day and...

"A brilliant, gory--and finally human--cult classic." Sounds delightful. Drafthouse Films has posted a new re-release trailer for cult horror classic Ms. 45, directed by Abel Ferrara starring the late model/actress/musician/screenwriter Zoë Lund as a mute garment-district seamstress. After "falling victim to multiple unspeakable assaults", she goes on a one-woman homicidal rampage against all of New York City's entire male population. I've never seen this film - but everything about it looks kind of awesome, especially in the second half of the trailer. Remastered for re-release next year, in theaters again first later this winter. Enjoy! Watch the new re-release trailer for Abel Ferrara's Ms. 45, released online by Drafthouse Films: For those who don't know, the film follows a mute garment seamstress (Zoe Lund) who starts a homicidal rampage against the men in New York City after she's fallen victim to one too many assaults. It's a feminist revenge thriller,...

Abel Ferrara's grotty grindhouse classic Ms. 45 is returning to select theaters on December 13, ahead of its release to the home video market, all courtesy of Drafthouse Films. To prime the pump, so to speak, a new trailer for the re-release has been prepared, edited by grindhouse aficionado Jason Eisener (Hobo With A Shotgun). As to the film itself: Ms. 45 follows a mute garment-district seamstress - played by the late model/actress/musician/screenwriter Zoë Lund - who, after falling victim to multiple unspeakable assaults, ignites a one-woman homicidal rampage against New York City's entire male population. Residents of major U.S. cities including Los Angeles, New York, Austin, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Houston, San Francisco and Seattle, now have something to anticipate to help them endure...

Can we get a little shout out to Drafthouse Films? As the majors continue to put more money into big franchises (see everything being released in 2015), it's guys like Drafthouse (and A24, Roadside Attractions, IFC Films, etc.) that keep cinephiles excited. And in addition to taking on challenging foreign films and edgy American movies, Drafthouse has also resurrected cult fare as well. "Miami Connection," "Wake In Fright," and the forthcoming "The Visitor" are just some recent examples and there's one more to keep an eye on: Abel Ferrara's "Ms. 45." The director's controversial 1981 movie is getting dressed up to hit theaters and VOD, and a new/old trailer has arrived. Starring the late Zoë Lund, the film follows a mute garment district seamstress who takes matters into her own violent hands after getting raped twice in one day. And as you might guess from the title, there will be blood.

Let me just say that typing this post up has be ecstatic beyond belief. I believe it was my friend Ed Demko, who you may remember from the 42nd Minute segments on the ol’ podcast, who introduced this film to me. The title I saw it under was Angel of Vengeance. It was a French DVD that I had imported as it was the only DVD release of the film. I was blown away by what I saw. It was dark, dirty, unapologetic and seemed to have no “law” to the film. I loved it. Last year, I tried booking the film for our Late Nite Grindhouse program by securing a 35mm print. Sadly, it fell through and I didn’t get to show this little seen classic. Now, those words “little seen” will hopefully be eradicated as celluoid champions Drafthouse Films have picked up the film for an official...

Nowadays, it's films like The Wizard of Oz, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars and Jurassic Park that get re-released to theaters. And while those kind of returns are fun for everyone, there are plenty of other films that deserve to be seen on the big screen in all their glory. Thankfully, Drafthouse Films is giving a classic film that audiences might not expect the change to shine on the big screen again. Thompson on Hollywood is reporting Drafthouse Films will re-release a remastered version of Abel Ferrara's 1981 film Ms. 45 to theaters in the United States in December, before an uncut version of the film finally hits Blu-Ray and DVD. Here's the original trailer for Abel Ferrara's 1981 Ms. 45, via Thompson on Hollywood: For those who don't know, the film follows a mute garment seamstress (Zoe Lund) who starts a homicidal rampage against the men in...

Drafthouse Films has picked up North American rights to Abel Ferrara’s 1981 classic revenge thriller Ms. 45.
The film follows a mute seamstress played by the late Zoë Lund who embarks on a homicidal rampage against New York City’s entire male population after she is attacked.
The film has been remastered in HD from the original negative materials and will open in theatres in December and debut on DVD and Blu-ray uncut for the first time in North America.
“One of the primary missions with Drafthouse Films is to build a selection of films which destroy the barriers between art-house and grindhouse,” said creative director Evan Husney, “and Abel Ferrara’s work embodies just that. Ms. 45 is one of those fringe 80s films that has been somewhat marginalised as pure exploitation, so we are beyond thrilled to reintroduce it to a new audience of cinephiles.”
Husney and James Emanuel Shapiro of Drafthouse Films brokered the deal...

Here's a bit more about Ferrara ("Bad Lieutenant," "King of New York") and "Ms. 45":Fiercely independent auteur Abel Ferrara debuted with the infamous 1979 D.I.Y. cult classic The Driller Killer, which established his signature fusion of NYC, despair, calculated stylish flourishes and idiosyncratic humor. Two years later, his follow-up feature Ms. 45 starred the then 18-year-old Zoë Lund, and explored similar themes while executing a uniquely feminist entry in the urban revenge subgenre. I interviewed Zoe Lund for the second issue of Filmmaker, back when we put Abel Ferrara’s Bad Lieutenant on the cover. She was the screenwriter, and she also appeared in one of the film’s most memorable scenes. Previously, Lund starred in a number of films, including Ferrara’s breakthrough, Ms. 45. Lund was fascinating, beautiful, talented, and she had a unique and powerful charisma. She died in Paris in 1999.
Recently I ran into filmmaker and Slamdance co-founder Paul Rachman, and he told me about the series of short documentary films he’s making about Lund. He agreed to answer a few questions about Lund, the project and himself for Filmmaker and to give our readers a sneak peek at the latest in the series.

With King of New York and Bad Lieutenant, Abel Ferrara was the chronicler of New York at its grittiest. But what happens when that city no longer exists? Compromise is not an option, he tells Andrew Purcell
Of all the great New York movie directors, none has captured the city's nervous energy better than Abel Ferrara. But while Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese have become establishment figures; and Spike Lee and John Cassavetes are celebrated outsiders, Ferrara has largely been ignored. Although he has never stopped making films, it is now more than a decade since his last cinematic release. His best-known movies, Bad Lieutenant and King of New York, are set in the dangerous but fertile period that began in the hip-hop late 70s and ended with the influx of corporate money in the mid-90s. His antiheroes are gangsters, junkies and cops, living on the margins in the heart of Manhattan.

Leading up to our 18th birthday, I’ll be revisiting on the blog one issue of Filmmaker a day. Below is Winter, 1993. In our second issue of Filmmaker, attorney Robert Siegel interviewed Steven Starr, former head of the motion picture department at William Morris who left the agency to produce Tom DeCillo’s Johnny Suede (the first motion picture to star Brad Pitt) and direct his first feature, Joey Breaker. (Subsequently, Starr launched the web video site Revver and produced the documentary Flow.) Peter Broderick interviewed Alex Cox, and I wrote the cover story on Abel Ferrara’s Bad Lieutenant, interviewing Ferrara, distributor Paul Cohen, and the late, great Zoe Lund, who wrote the screenplay and acted in the film....

Val Kilmer, Fairuza Balk, Jennifer Coolidge, Vondie Curtis Hall, Shawn Hatosy, Denzel Whitaker and Xzibit are about to have a "Bad" trip.
They're set to join Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendez in Werner Herzog's cop drama "Bad Lieutenant." Shea Wigham, Katie Chonacas ("Righteous Kill") and Brad Dourif also are among those who will appear in the update of Abel Ferrara's cult classic.
The original followed the depraved adventures of a corrupt policeman (Harvey Keitel) investigating the rape of a nun. The new film will feature Cage as the titular crooked cop and capture the spirit of the original, with the protagonist's drug intake, accepting sexual favors as bribes and other elements that endeared so many to the 1992 version.
The new film will feature Kilmer as Cage's partner, while Xzibit will play a villain.
The original's producer, Edward R. Pressman, will produce the new version with Stephen Belafonte, Alan Polsky and Gabe Polsky. Billy Finkelstein wrote the screenplay, loosely based on Ferrara and Zoe Lund's script.
Nu Image/Millennium's project will feature the company's Avi Lerner, Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short and Boaz Davidson as exec producers, along with Elliot Rosenblatt and Alessandro Camon. Randall Emmett and Cage's Saturn Films also produce. Filming is set to begin later in the summer.
Kilmer is repped by Icm and Affirmative. Balk is repped by Innovative and Untitled. Coolidge is repped by Gersh. Curtis Hall is repped by Gersh and 3 Arts. Hatosy is repped by Ifa and Mee. Whitaker is repped by Wma. Xzibit is repped by Paradigm and Management 360. Wigham is repped by Principal Management. Chonacas is repped by Holder Management. Dourif is repped by Innovative.
