Barbra Streisand is sharing a warning her late friend and fellow actress Judy Garland gave to her about Hollywood in her new memoir, My Name Is Barbra.
In an excerpt, via People magazine, Streisand wrote, “Judy and I became friends. We spoke on the phone, and she came to one of the rare parties I gave at my New York apartment (four in thirty‑five years). I think she arrived late. And I remember her saying something I never quite understood: ‘Don’t let them do to you what they did to me.’ I should have asked her what she meant, but I didn’t want to appear too nosy.”
In the 2017 memoir about the late actress, Judy and I: My Life With Judy Garland, her ex-husband Sid Luft detailed the pressure Garland faced to maintain a certain weight and appearance, including studio executives telling her she had to watch her figure.

Chicago – It was 100 years ago today – June 10th, 1922 – that Frances Gumm was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, but the world would soon know her as Judy Garland. The entertainer, who went from child star to adult fame, is honored by her daughter Lorna Luft.
Arguably, Judy Garland is one of the greatest movie stars and entertainers of her era. She was signed to a film contract by Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) in 1935 at the tender age of 13, after a career in vaudeville with her act known a the Gumm (later Garland) Sisters. Judy Garland, who would have turned 100 years old this week, wasn’t just billed as “the world’s greatest entertainer” – in her time, she really was.
Garland was much more than just little Dorothy Gale from Kansas who once had an adventure in far-off Oz. She spent 45 of her 47 years in show business, eventually making 34 feature films and more than 200 radio appearances, releasing 80 singles and 12 albums, making 60 TV appearances (including 30 of her own shows), and doing 1,100 concerts.
“She had the amazing ability to convey joy and pathos and humor and sincerity and honesty,” says author and Emmy-winning producer John Fricke (“Judy Garland: A Portrait in Art and Anecdote”), “yet by giving of herself on that level, she had no guard, no protective shield. She was a million percent vulnerable.”

Renée Zellweger may be earning praise for her portrayal of Judy Garland in Judy, but the real-life story behind the Wizard of Oz star is much more tragic.
Garland dominated movie screens with roles in The Wizard of Oz, A Star Is Born, Meet Me in St. Louis and the Easter Parade, but the star struggled with substance abuse and body image issues since her breakout at the age of 16.
The new film on her life, Judy, follows Garland from 1968 to 1969 as she performs a series of sold-out concerts in London while struggling to cope with depression and her addictions.

Judy Garland has a special place in Hollywood. The legend is largely beloved, even to this day. From her early days until her last, she was always embraced by at least part of the world, and sometimes…the entire world. This week, after blowing away audiences at the Telluride Film Festival, the biopic Judy brings the last part of her life to the screen. Buoyed by an amazing performance by Renée Zellweger, the movie is better than your garden variety industry tale. Oscar is going to come calling for this one, mark my words. Luckily, it’s solidly entertaining and never once feels like homework. The film is a biopic, centered on the final year of the famous actress/singer’s life. When we meet her, Judy Garland (Zellweger) is essentially homeless, having been kicked out of her hotel room she stays in with her young daughter and son. Bringing...

Judy Garland was just 16 when she starred in her breakout role, 1939’s The Wizard of Oz. At just 4 feet, 11½ inches, Garland had a cute, girl-next-door charm helped set her apart from her glamorous contemporaries like Elizabeth Taylor and Ava Gardner. But with success would come the need to maintain her youthful looks and thin frame — pressures from Hollywood studio MGM that would fuel the legendary songstress’ drug abuse and eventually lead to her death.
Now, more than four decades after an accidental drug overdose took her life at age 47, a new memoir about the late star pulls back the curtain on Garland’s demons.

Anne Marie has been chronicling Judy Garland's career chronologically through musical numbers...
The terribly tricky thing about early TV (or really any TV) history is that episodes are often filmed and aired in different orders. Because of the discrepancies in airing schedules, we will be following in the order in which they were shot. After the CBS lawsuit was settled with the agreement that Judy Garland should make a show for CBS, the question became what kind of show to do. It took two years for the usual contract negotiations, delays, and upheavals to settle enough for that question to be decided. On June 24, 1963, Judy Garland recorded the first episode of a variety show titled (unsurprisingly) The Judy Garland Show.

We have reached the end of Juy Garland's film career. From this point forward, this series will be focused exclusively on her television appearances. So, why not play Judy out the way she's remembered best, belting a big number in glorious Technicolor? But the hopeful title and Judy's brassy voice belie a darker truth. This week's number serves not only as the title song of the film, but also as a thesis for Judy Garland's later career.
The Movie: I Could Go On Singing (United Artists, 1964)
The Songwriters: Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg
The Players: Judy Garland & Dick Bogarde, directed by Ronald Nearne
The Story: If A Star Is Born represents Judy Garland's image as a tragic, romantic figure in Hollywood, then I Could Go On Singing may be the closest Garland got to a public confession of how messy the tragic parts of her life coud be.

In 1957, a golden opportunity landed in Judy Garland's lap that looked, at first glance, like a lawsuit. In fact it was a lawsuit (and a counterlawsuit) concerning a contract she'd signed with CBS. Garland (on the advice of hubby Sidney Luft) had signed a $300,000 contract with CBS for three years of TV specials in 1955. However, only one special had ever aired. In 1957, Judy sued, which caused CBS to countersue. The result reads like something out of the rejected musical version of Adam's Rib: in 1961, Judy & CBS decided to put aside their differences (and lawsuits) to sign a new contract for two new specials. The first of these aired just a year later in 1962.

When Judy Garland and George Cukor made A Star Is Born for Warner Bros, both Judy and the industry were changing. The Paramount Case and The De Havilland ruling had weakened the paternalistic power of the studio system by forcing studios to sell their theaters and release their stars, while widescreen technology changed the shape of the movies. Similarly, Judy's previously squeaky-clean MGM image had transformed. In the early 1950s, she divorced Vincente Minnelli, married Sidney Luft, survived a suicide attempt and rehab and launched a successful concert series and an even more successful concert album. It was no coincidence that in the middle of this maelstrom Judy Garland's comeback vehicle was a remake of a 1937 Technicolor classic.

While Lupita Nyong'o was last night's definitive fashion icon, with her flowing, low-cut powder-blue gown that seemed to be a part of her skin, there was another star in blue that received almost as much attention, but not for the best reasons. We are, of course, referring to Liza Minnelli, whose mere presence seemed to be a mystery to almost everyone in attendance (and most of the people watching at home). So why was Liza Minnelli there?
Well, ostensibly, Minnelli, who had a shock of blue in her hair to accentuate the electric blue pants suit that she wore, was there to commemorate her mother Judy Garland's involvement in "Wizard of Oz." (Pink, who also wore a dress with a plunging neckline, performed a song from the film.) Liza was accompanied to the Oscars by her brother, Joey Luft, and sister Lorna Luft (Garland's father is director Vincent Minnelli,...

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz, Judy Garland's three children (Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft and Joey Luft) are reuniting this Sunday on the 86th Academy Awards, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Inside the Academy Awards: How a Song Can Wing an Oscar
Minnelli, naturally, is the most famous of the Garland children. The daughter of director Vincente Minnelli, Liza is renown for both her acting (including a Best Actress Oscar for 1972's Cabaret) and singing (particularly her work in the Sixties and Seventies); she's suffered...

The planned commemoration of the 75th anniversary of "The Wizard of Oz" during this year's Oscars telecast is getting a sentimental boost: The children of late "Oz" star Judy Garland will reunite to introduce the film.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft, and Joey Luft will appear on the Academy Awards telecast to pay tribute to Garland's most iconic film. The details of their role in honoring "Oz" -- as well as overall details of the movie's tribute -- have yet to be finalized, and are being kept under wraps for now.
Minnelli, daughter of Garland and second husband (and legendary director) Vincente Minnelli, is a celebrated star in her own right, having picked up a Best Actress statuette for her role in 1972's "Cabaret." Health problems have largely kept her out of the public eye recently, THR reports, though she did attend last month's Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Steven Soderbergh's biopic of the pianist is a bizarre anti-Pinocchio parable in which toxic love transforms a handsome young man into a deeply unhappy latex doll
After Side Effects, supposedly his final work for the cinema, Steven Soderbergh has now apparently performed his post-swansong. Behind the Candelabra was commissioned for HBO television but is shown here in the Cannes festival competition as a standalone feature-length drama: a bizarre anti-Pinocchio parable in which the power of loneliness and toxic love transform a handsome young man into a deeply unhappy, plump-nosed, cleft-chinned latex doll. It's the true-life story of the flamboyant pianist Liberace and his young companion and chauffeur Scott Thorson, taking us from the couple's ecstatic first meeting backstage in Las Vegas in 1976 to Liberace's death from an Aids-related illness in 1987.
The film is mesmeric, riskily incorrect, outrageously watchable and simply outrageous. Unlike ITV's Vicious, which stars two famously gay actors,...

Judy Garland's producer ex-husband Sid Luft has died. He was 89. Luft, whose credits include such classics as Kilroy Was Here and A Star Is Born, died on Thursday in Santa Monica, California, of an apparent heart attack, according to his longtime friend and business partner John Kimble. Luft and Garland were married in 1952 and divorced a tumultuous 13 years later. The marriage was Garland's third and Luft's second. They had two children together, Lorna in 1952 and Joey in 1955. Luft also was stepfather to Liza Minnelli, daughter of Garland's second husband, Vincente Minnelli. Luft was credited with helping resurrect Garland's career after she was released from her contract at film studio MGM in 1950 following a series of personal and professional crises. It was at MGM that she became a star and made such films as The Wizard Of Oz and Meet Me In St Louis. After he and Garland divorced, Luft married Patti Hemingway in 1970. That union also ended in divorce. In 1993, he married actress Camille Keaton, who survives him.
