Having never seen The Shield, this news only appeals to me on a film-based level — but I’m sure that fans of the show will be excited to hear Deadline‘s report that Michael Chiklis and Forest Whitaker will soon reunite for the crime drama Pawn. Set to be the directorial debut for Saw director of photography David A. Armstrong , the film — scripted by Jay Anthony White — follows “an ex-con [who] becomes entangled in a manipulative chess game between the Feds, local police and the mob.” It’s pointed out that things have “gone terribly wrong.” Wonder how he’ll get out of this one! The cast will also include Ray Liotta and Common, but there’s no indication as to who has what role. Even though he played a cop on The Shield for several seasons, I’m not throwing out the possibility that Chiklis will be the ex-con. When...

This sounds like a cool story, one that Chiklis and Whitaker will be great in. What are your thoughts?...

Exclusive: Robert Katz is about to begin discussions to exit as president of Dimension Films, a job that is proving tough to fill for the long term. Katz, a well regarded exec who had been Film Department’s president of production and before that exec veep at Yari Film Group, took the job in late July following Brad Luff’s exit after less than a year. I’m told that the exit is fairly amicable and that it came down to a difference in vision between Katz and his boss, Dimension head Bob Weinstein, who has always been a challenging guy to work for. I’m not sure that Katz really had an opportunity to get on track in such a short time, but clearly the chemistry wasn’t right. Dimension last released Apollo 18, the $5 million budget “found footage” genre thriller that grossed $17.6 million domestic.

Robert Katz has become Dimension Film's new president, the company announced Wednesday. At Yari, Katz was in charge of production of "Crash," "The Illusionist," and "The Painted Veil." Dimension is owned by the Weinstein Company, and Katz will report to co-chair Bob Weinstein. Dimension's president of production Brad Luff has left the company. He'd been appointed last October after leaving his job as senior vice president of the Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group last fall to manage the development slate for Bob Weinstein's genre label. Sounds like it wasn't a good fit. Luff had been at Spwag since December 2008 and before that he was president of production for The Mayhem Project and Morgan Creek Productions. Exclusive: Harvey and Bob Weinstein's restructured The Weinstein Company has been gearing up slates, and hiring veterans to run the TWC and Dimension film labels. Now, they are about to fill the void in marketing, and the choice is a surprise: I'm told that the Weinsteins are hiring Bladimiar A. Norman, who gave notice last week and stepped down from his post as Head of Digital Marketing at PR agency 42 West. Norman, who held posts in interactive marketing at Paramount, Warner Bros and Sony Pictures Entertainment, will come in as vice president. Another exec might be added, but I'm told he'll spearhead marketing for both TWC and Dimension pictures, reporting to David Glasser and the brothers. The Weinsteins recently hired Donna Gigliotti as TWC production president, Brad Luff as Dimension production president, and banker David Hutkin to oversee a new funding unit. In his 42 West post, Norman was digital marketing advisor for 127 Hours,...

Breaking: The Weinstein Company is close to signing film finance veteran David Hutkin to join the company and oversee a new division called Strategic Initiatives, Investments & Banking Group. I'm told that Hutkin is in talks to come aboard as executive vice president, and will bring with him longtime colleague Vivian Tarn. Hutkin has spent 15 years working in senior structured and corporate debt underwriting within the entertainment industry at numerous banks. Most recently, he has been head of entertainment finance for the First California Bank, and before that worked for Bank of America, Icb Entertainment Finance and The Lewis Horwitz Organization. Hutkin has worked on financing for hundreds of films that include My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Monster, The Illusionist and Showtime's The Tudors. Hutkin, who'll be based in Los Angeles, will oversee TWC's film funds and investor deals and report to co-CEOs Harvey and Bob Weinstein and COO David Glasser.

It's no secret that for a very long time now Dimension Films, who were at one point pumping out horror movies left and right, has seemed all but extinct. It was announced over at Deadline that Brad Luff would be Dimension Films' new President of Production. Also a reboot of both Scanners and Short Circuit. It sounds as if Dimension has finally got their sh*t together, now if only they could deliver us some solid horror flicks we can all smile. A former Sony exec is taking over as president of production at Dimension Films, says Deadline. Brad Luff, reports the site, is going to oversee post-production on Scream 4 when he moves into office next week. Also worth noting in Deadline's piece, however, is that they say Luff will then take on the long-mooted Hellraiser remake, even though a direct-to-dvd sequel is currently in post-production, the Children of the Corn remake and the An American Werewolf in London remake. Just in case you thought any of those were dead, know that they are indeed alive and well. Scanners is another title mentioned in the Deadline report, but right now, sources tell us both Hellraiser and Children of the Corn are two priority projects. It could be nothing, but it could be...

Exclusive: I hear he starts on Monday at Dimension Films as President of Production after final details of his exit from Sony are negotiated. "Obviously we are on a mission to staff up key parts of the company," The Weinstein Co's David Glasser just told me. Since December 2008, Luff has been Svp of production at Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group, manage the development slate, including generating original material for potential theatrical release and identifying studio sequels for the DVD market. He oversaw development there on the upcoming Faster (co-financed with CBS Films), Soul Surfer, Quarantine 2, and Stomp The Yard 2. From 2005-2008, Luff was president of production for The Mayhem Project, a production and financing entity backed by two UK-based hedge funds. In 2003, Luff was named president of production at Morgan Creek Prods and before that had been Evp of production at Neal Moritz's Sony-based Original Film shingle for six years.

Upon arriving on set in Griffin, Georgia, one of the very first lessons learned from producer Marc Bienstock is that there are two things you don’t say on the set of Quarantine 2: Terminal -- zombies and night vision.
“Zombie is a taboo word around here,” joked Bienstock. “People always say that there were zombies in Quarantine, but to set it straight - these are infected people. They don’t rise from the dead so no, you won’t see the undead anywhere here in Georgia.” Duly noted, sir.
In terms of night vision, Bienstock was just clearing up any misconceptions that we will be seeing the same night vision camera work used in the original Quarantine for this sequel, which almost became the integral look of the original’s marketing and advertising campaign.

Sahara scribes Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer have been tapped to rewrite the comedy-actioner Skip Tracer for Columbia Pictures. The story centers on a man who inadvertently kidnaps a young girl embroiled in a custody battle when he repossesses a yacht. Scribe Steve Franks (Big Daddy) penned an earlier draft. Neal Moritz is producing through his Original Films banner alongside Brad Luff and Chris Henze. Sony's Jonathan Kadin is shepherding the project for the studio.
