Popular novelist who has won the Newbery Award twice, for 'Number the
Stars' (1989) and 'The Giver' (1993).
She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii but she was raised in New York City, New York; Carlisle, Pennsylvania; Tokyo, Japan; and Washington D.C.
She was the middle child of an United States Army Dentist with an older sister, Helen, and younger brother, Jon.
She has three grandsons including one named,Rhys, and a granddaughter.
During her marriage, she lived in California, Connecticut (her daughter was born there), Florida (a son was born there), South Carolina; Cambridge, Massachuetts; and Maine.
She attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode, Island as a undergraduate student and earned her graduate degree from the University of Southern Maine.
She lost her son, Grey, (an F-15 pilot) in the United States Air Force, in a plane crash in Germany.
She splits her time between homes in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Maine. (May 2008)
