“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” hair department head Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson, Viola Davis’ personal hairstylist, have become the first Black women to win an Oscar for makeup and hairstyling.
Neal and Wilson won alongside Sergio Lopez-Rivera, Davis’ personal makeup artist. They beat out Mark Coulier, Dalia Colli and Francesco Pegoretti for “Pinocchio”; “Emma’s” Marese Langan, Laura Allen and Claudia Stolze; Kimberley Spiteri, Gigi Williams and Colleen Labaff for “Mank”; and “Hillbilly Elegy’s” Eryn Krueger Mekash, Patricia Dehaney and Matthew Mungle.
The award was created by the Academy in 1981 after the 1980 film “The Elephant Man” was not recognized. Neal and Wilson first made history in March when they became the first Black women to be nominated in the category.
Backstage, Neal said, “In moving forward, I’m just excited about the future because these conversations are taking place, these questions are being asked by reporters. I think...

“Mank” is the only film in contention at the 2021 Oscars to break the double digit barrier in the nominations count. This Netflix period picture reaped a leading 10 bids. In a six-way tied for second place with, appropriately enough, six nominations apiece are “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” All seven of these films are up for Best Picture. That race is rounded out by five-time contender “Promising Young Woman.”

The race for makeup and hair is particularly noteworthy this season. It includes transforming Viola Davis into the pioneering blues singer of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” turning Glenn Close into the fiery Appalachian grandmother of “Hillbilly Elegy,” adding floral flourishes to Anya Taylor-Joy’s titular matchmaker in “Emma,” meticulously recreating Hollywood’s Golden Age in black-and-white in “Mank,” and creating a unique wooden look to the titular puppet of “Pinocchio.”
But with the Academy tilting toward transforming real-life people in recent years, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” is the favorite, especially after its sweep of the coveted Muahs Guild Awards. Plus, Davis is the favorite in the Best Actress race. She landed her fourth Oscar nomination — the most of any Black actress — as the sexy, subversive Rainey. And the actress was boldly uncompromising in demanding verisimilitude with the help of gold teeth, charcoal-like makeup, and a wig made of horsehair. She tapped her personal makeup stylist,...

Updated Designing the costumes for Emma, the Autumn de Wilde-directed adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic period novel, was a balance between staying true to the era (the early 1800s) while leaving room for some creativity and artistic license, says Oscar-nominated costume designer Alexandra Byrne.
“To design a period film, you need to know and research the period, so that you can make decisions to enable the storytelling from a point of view of knowledge, as opposed to a point of ignorance,” she said during Focus Features’ panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees awards-season event. “Autumn [de Wilde] wanted to know everything about the period, she wanted the comedy and the humor to come from period, it was our job to really understand it. We’re not here to be museum archivists, we’re here to tell a story, but I think you can only do that truthfully if you...

When Anya Taylor-Joy’s “Emma” sauntered on to our cinema screens earlier this year, it wasn’t the first time audiences experienced the story of Jane Austen’s meddling heroine. Gwyneth Paltrow previously embodied the role in a 1996 film version. That original incarnation had a decent reception at the Oscars, but the 2020 update is poised to perform even better.
The 2020 adaptation from Focus Features has one major factor boosting its chances. The film debuted in theaters on February 20, 2020. That was just a couple weeks before the coronavirus pandemic shuttered movie houses around the country. “Emma” was indeed the last film I saw in theaters, and I imagine the same is true for many industry professionals. In a chaotic year where films either had to postpone a theatrical run or head straight to video-on-demand, “Emma” will likely stick out in voters’ memories as one of their final movie theater experiences of...

The director, just weeks away from starting shoot on a Jurassic World sequel, was visibly moved with the film’s performance, not only when he took to the stage to collect his Goya for best director, but also when his collaborators on the film did so for the film’s other eight wins of the night, including best cinematography, special effects, sound and production design.
With a box office of $28.6m (€26.5m), A Monster Calls was the biggest film in Spain last year.

Amma Asante’s period drama stars newcomer Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
Twentieth Century Fox is to release period drama Belle in the UK on June 13, 2014.
The film is directed by BAFTA winner Amma Asante, written by Misan Sagay and produced by Damian Jones whose previous credits include Oscar-winner The Iron Lady. It marks Asante’s second feature after A Way of Life in 2004.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars in the title role alongside Tom Wilkinson, Sam Reid, Sarah Gadon, Miranda Richardson, Penelope Wilton, Tom Felton, James Norton, Matthew Goode and Emily Watson.
Belle is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral. Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Wilkinson) and his wife (Watson), Belle’s lineage affords her certain privileges, but the color of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing.
Left to wonder if she will ever find love, Belle falls for...

Check out the official trailer for Amma Asante’s Belle starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sam Reid, Tom Wilkinson, Emily Watson, Tom Felton, Miranda Richardson and Matthew Goode.
Scheduled for a May 2014 release, the film was shown at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival to positive reviews.
Justin Chang (Variety): “The pleasures of Jane Austen and the horrors of the British slave trade make a surprisingly elegant fit in Amma Asante’s handsome period piece.” John Oursler (Sound on Sight): “Amma Asante’s Belle, a new entrant in the genre, strikes all the right notes.” John DeFore (The Hollywood Reporter): “Moviegoers should respond well when Fox Searchlight brings it to theaters next spring.”
I can’t wait to see this. Being a fan of period-piece dramas, Belle looks to be the perfect blend of courage, love and history.

Meryl Streep revealed back in 2011 what she had learned from the lady whose big screen portrayal had brought her an Oscar, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe - Margaret Thatcher, who has died at the age of 87.
Streep took on the role of Britain's first female Prime Minister in 'The Iron Lady', a film which divided Thatcher supporters when it was released, with its vivid portrayal of the former Pm as a frail, elderly lady, choosing to tell the rest of her remarkable story through flashback.

The Academy has announced rule changes for the 85th annual Academy Awards, which were voted upon Tuesday. All of the changes are quite minimal. However, in the makeup category -- which will now be known as Best Makeup and Hairstyling -- I'm guessing the change has a lot to do with "The Iron Lady" hair stylist Marese Langan not being able to share in the win last year when she could at the BAFTA Awards. But things were actually reversed there, where prosthetics designer Mark Coulier originally wasn't allowed to share in the honor across the pond. All of that caused...

All the gossip from Harvey Weinstein's Baftas after-party, where Ralph Fiennes danced with the new Bond girl and Gillian Anderson danced on a table
Kiss and make up
A Bafta trophy rested on the bar downstairs at Le Baron in London, where Harvey Weinstein was hosting his exclusive after-party. It was late and I was tired after a sweaty dance session with Michael Fassbender, but I just had to ask the woman who was holding it what she'd won it for. "Jason, I'm your next-door neighbour," she said. I looked straight at her and indeed it was Marese Langan. We've lived next door to one another for two years, and I only hazarded a guess that she was in the film industry because I occasionally get her copies of Screen International misdelivered to my door. But I never knew Marese was a makeup artist, and I certainly didn't know...

Nobody can make an entrance like Meryl Streep. Unfortunately, this one didn't turn out quite as she intended at last night's BAFTAs when the A-list actress ascended the stage to collect her Award for Best Leading Actress.
Streep's shoe (a neat black Jimmy Choo as it turned out) went flying and had to be retrieved by the chivalrous efforts of Colin Firth, Streep's friend and co-star in Mamma Mia!
"That couldn't have gone any worse," Streep commented before launching into her thank you speech for her award for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.
The episode seemed good-humoured and harmless enough at the time, but Streep was nearly in tears afterwards - because, in the confusion surrounding her lost shoe and near-fall, it seemed she had forgotten to thank someone very close to her, her makeup and hair assistant of 35 years' standing - Roy Helland.

"The Artist" continued its award season dominance this evening as the Oscar favorite followed up its Golden Globe, Critics' Choice and Directors Guild victories with seven more wins at this year's BAFTAs, including Best Film, Best Actor for star Jean Dujardin and Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Michel Hazanvicius.
"The Artist" also took home the trophies for Best Cinematography, Best Original Music and Best Costume Design.
For a silent film, "The Artist" sure is making a lot of noise these days.
Presented annually by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the BAFTAs recognize excellence in cinema both internationally and in British film. That often gives British productions a leg up in the voting, but this year not even homegrown favorite "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" could halt "The Artist's" unstoppable momentum; despite being nominated in 11 categories, "Tinker Tailor Solider Spy" ended up winning just two BAFTAs.

The 2012 Orange British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) were held tonight at which The Artist was named Best Film along with six other awards including Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Original Screenplay and Actor (Jean Dujardin). The film also took home awards for cinematography, costume design and original music. None of this comes as much of a surprise as The Artist is now, and has been for some time, considered the front-runner for Best Picture at the Oscars and has slowly been gaining steam in other categories including director and actor, especially as Dujardin has been charming American and international audiences with his latest Funny or Die skit and an appearance on "Saturday Night Live". In other awards, Meryl Streep won for Best Actress, adding more fuel to the competition between her and The Help's Viola Davis, a film that found itself in the winner's circle with Octavia Spencer winning Best Supporting Actress.

Well the 2012 BAFTA Awards are over (unless of course you’re watching them on a catch-up service) and the event was filled with very little surprises – The Artist repeated its success from both the Richard Attenborough Film Awards and the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards and my bet (despite my love for his competition) for the Outstanding Debut Award, Paddy Considine, did walk away with that award. Of the awards Real surprises, I’m so happy for Christopher Plumer, who walked away with the Best Supporting Actor award for Beginners, and Octavia Spencer who won the Best Supporting Female award for The Help (although like many I thought that would go to Carey Mulligan for Drive).

Chicago – Just as it is predicted to do two Sundays from today, “The Artist” dominated the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) today, winning seven different awards. The silent, black-and-white film won Best Film, Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), and Best Lead Actor (Jean Dujardin), and four other wins.
The wins for “The Artist” just helped give more momentum to a film that is already predicted to take the top prize at the Academy Awards on February 26. While the BAFTAs and Academy Awards don’t always see eye-to-eye on the Best Film award, they have selected the same winner the past three years.
In the other major categories, Meryl Streep won Best Lead Actress for “The Iron Lady,” Christopher Plummer won Best Supporting Actor for “Beginners,” and Octavia Spencer won Best Supporting Actress for “The Help.” “The Artist” also won for Best Original Screenplay, while “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” won Best Adapted Screenplay.

The 2012 Orange BAFTA ceremony tonight was, as expected, dominated by Michael Hazanavicius’ silent black-and-white love story The Artist.
Taking home seven awards in total, including ‘Best Film’, ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Actor for Jean Dujardin’, ‘Best Original Screenplay’, ‘Original Music’, ‘Cinematography’ and ‘Best Costume Design’, The Artist won almost every category it competed in.
Although Dujardin was a surprise over George Clooney for Best Actor, there was no shock for Best Actress with the BAFTA going to Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady, which was also honoured for the extraordinary Make-up & Hair category.
In the supporting category The Help’s Octavia Spencer won Supporting Actress and Christopher Plummer won Best Supporting Actor for Beginners, as expected.

So there we have it. The 2012 BAFTA Awards have now drawn to a close. The Artist had an amazing night taking seven awards including that of the award for Best Film. Michel Hazanavicius’s black and white silent film also took awards for Best Actor, Original Music, Cinematography, Costume Design, Original Screenplay, Best Director and Leading Actor. Simply amazing!
Senna came away with two out of the three awards it was nominated for including Best Editing and Best Documentary which was a new category for this year.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy won two awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Outstanding British Film but a rather big surprise was that Shame directed by Steve McQueen and starring Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan left empty handed. The full list of winners is below.

Hello everyone and welcome to our favourite day in the British film calendar. We’re here in the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for the 65th annual BAFTA awards and while the red carpet is being ironed and our colleagues fight off the cold anticipation is building for what should be an excellent evening.
Two of the films dominating the nominations are paeans to the magic of cinema with Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist and Martin Scorsese’s Hugo up for numerous awards though a particular favourite of ours here on HeyUGuys, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, has been championed within the Academy and find itself up for Best Film, Director and a Supporting Actress nod for Carey Mulligan.

The 2012 Orange BAFTA Awards ceremony takes place tonight at London’s Royal Opera House, the biggest night on the British film calendar once again hosted by Stephen Fry.
Going into the usual British bias/nepotism heavy show is the surprise that a French produced movie is odds on favourite to take the top prize.
Michael Hazanavicius’ delightful silent black-and-white movie is expected to take Best Film at the 65th BAFTA ceremony tonight, with George Clooney (The Descendants) and Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) favourites to win the best actor and best actress prizes. None of these people are British!!
This is somewhat unprecedented as back in September when Tomas Alfredson’s methodically paced adaptation of John Le Carre’s spy thriller Tinker Tailor Solider Spy hit cinemas with an outstanding all British ensemble and an astonishing performance from the much loved and under-appreciated Gary Oldman, it was hard to see...

BAFTA announced their 2012 film nominations today, and I really need to get out there and see The Artist! It landed the most nominations with 12. Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy got 11 noms, and Hugo got 9. I also think it's great that Drive got a Best Picture nomination, unfortunately Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 did not. It will be interesting to see who and what films take home the awards.
The Orange British Academy Film Awards take place on Sunday 12 February at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. The ceremony will be hosted by Stephen Fry and will be broadcast exclusively on BBC One.

Early this morning the BAFTA nominations were announced, after a couple rounds of 'longlist' reveals. One of the big Oscar frontrunners, The Artist, walked away with 12 nominations, including Best Film, Director, Original Screenplay, Leading Actor and Leading Actress. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy gets a moment in the sun with 11 nominations -- not really any surprise that the film would get lots of BAFTA attention -- and Hugo took 9 nods, though mostly for smaller categories. Drive, which has mostly been ignored in the Us awards rounds so far, got a nod for Best Film, and Attack the Block and Submarine were both nominated for Outstanding Debut By a British Writer, Director or Producer. Check out the full nomination list below. The Orange British Academy Film Awards take place on Sunday 12 February at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. The ceremony will be hosted by Stephen Fry and will be broadcast exclusively on BBC One.

"The Artist" received 12 nominations and "Tinker Tailor" 11, with each film up for best picture and director, and best actor nominations for leading men Jean Dujardin and Gary Oldman.
The other best-film nominees announced Tuesday were "The Descendants," "Drive" and "The Help."
In a diverse field not dominated by any single film, there are also multiple nominations for "Hugo," "My Week With Marilyn," "The Iron Lady" and "The Help."

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts have announced the 2012 Orange BAFTA Nominations for 2011 and its Michael Hazanavicius’ incredible black and silent love story The Artist that leads the pack with 12 nominations. Coming up close behind is Tomas Alfredson’s adaptation of John Le Carre’s spy thriller Tinker Tailor Solider Spy with 11 nominations, hopefully a sign it may get some Oscar recognition when the Academy gives out their nominations next week.
The Artist & Tinker Tailor Solider Spy are my two favourite movies of the year so for once I’m agreeing with the BAFTA’s!
Martin Scorsese’s nostalgic children’s movie Hugo has 9 nominations, the biopic My Week With Marilyn follows with 6 but surprisingly Alexander Payne’s drama The Descendants which won two major Golden Globes, has not been nominated in the Best Director category and neither has Tate Taylor’s much lauded The Help.
