“Still Working 9 to 5” was reviewed by TheWrap out of the 2022 SXSW Film Festival.
Camille Hardman and Gary Lane’s documentary “Still Working 9 to 5” cold-opens with an archival clip of Jane Fonda giving a television interview about “9 to 5,” the 1980 comedy she produced and starred in alongside Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton. As the interviewer presses her about what kind of film to expect from the radical activist, Fonda blurts, “it’s a movie about secretaries fantasizing about murdering their boss,” to which the interviewer responds, “So it’s not a political statement, is it?” This is an assertion that Hardman and Lane will emphatically disprove over the course of the next hour and 40 minutes.
“Still Working 9 to 5” doesn’t innovate or experiment with documentary form: This is a straightforward talking-heads and archival-footage kind of project. But the access to the film’s stars and producers,...

Dolly Parton and Kelly Clarkson have joined forces with producer Shane McAnally to record a very different version of the Parton classic “9 to 5” as a duet for an upcoming documentary, “Still Working 9 to 5,” just announced for a premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March.
The documentary’s premiere at SXSW was announced Wednesday morning, but for the filmmakers, the new recording by Parton and Clarkson counts as a big reveal, too. “We could do a documentary just on the making of the duet,” co-director/producer Gary Lane tells Variety.
Of announcing the song as well as film, Lane adds, “It almost feels like launching two projects in one.”
This new version of the theme song from the original “9 to 5” movie has a distinctly different tone from the original. “The first iteration, Dolly’s original version was very upbeat. There was a lot of...

In 1980, Dolly Parton’s big-screen debut in 9 to 5 went on to become the highest-grossing comedy film of the year, also earning Parton an Oscar nomination and a pair of Grammy awards for the now-classic theme song. Co-starring Parton, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda as co-workers who decide to hold their “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” of a boss (Dabney Coleman) hostage and transform their oppressive workplace into one of equality, the hilarious, over-the-top hijinks couldn’t disguise the film’s more resonant message, which has only strengthened in the current...

Before tackling the Spider-Man trilogy, Master of Horror Sam Raimi gave the world his own unique brand of superhero storytelling with his 1990 neo-noir/horror/romance mash-up, Darkman, which paid homage to the larger-than-life characters and worlds of comic properties like Dick Tracy and Batman, as well as the tortured titular character in The Phantom of the Opera. A wildly hyperkinetic tale of revenge and loss, Darkman may not be Raimi’s most polished work, but I truly feel that given where he was at that time in his career, and the budget he had to play with, Darkman is easily one of Raimi’s most ambitious efforts (certainly right up there with the first two Evil Dead films).
One of my favorite aspects to Darkman (besides Larry Drake as the absolutely despicable crime boss Durant) has always been the film’s incredible effects, which were designed and created by Tony Gardner of Alterian,...

During the final night of PaleyFest La, the always intense “American Horror Story” fanbase zeroed in on fan favorite Sarah Paulson, to the point that Kathy Bates took great pleasure in dubbing Paulson “the People’s Princess.” It was all in good fun, though, as the cast goofily bantered back and forth — and, in the case of Cuba Gooding Jr., twerked.

[Hello, readers! With Valentine's Day just around the corner, we here at Daily Dead thought it would be fun to do things a little different this year. We're putting the spotlight on our favorite horror-loving characters from genre cinema, people who have represented our own fandom on screen and, in many cases, helped bring our passion for horror into the mainstream. Be sure to check back here on Daily Dead every day through Valentine's Day for our tributes to some of the greatest horror fans to ever grace the big screen.]
Knowing the horror genre inside and out can help you determine if your next-door neighbor is really a vampire (or if your mom has a date with a bloodsucker), and it can also help you stay one step ahead of a slasher with a phone fetish. But for two teenagers who absolutely adore The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, love of the genre helps them get through something more terrifying than any undead creature with a crimson diet or weapon-wielding maniac in Woodsboro. The monster they face is all too real: summer school.
From the moment we meet Dave Frazier (Gary Riley) and Francis “Chainsaw” Gremp (Dean Cameron) in Carl Reiner's 1987 comedy, Summer School, we know they are the real deal when it comes to horror. The insides of their school lockers are plastered with photos of Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, and the “machete zombie” from Dawn of the Dead. Prosthetic...

Comic Book Reviews: DC Comics Round Up Week 10/12/2016
A little late this time around, but never forgotten! This week I take a quick look at the developing stories from DC’s Rebirth line up. While not a huge week for story development, we do get to wrap up a few plots and open the doors to a few more!
Action Comics #965
Story: Dan Jurgens Art: Stephen Segovia, Art Thibert, Arif Prianto, Dave Sharpe
Review: So with Superman seemingly unable to prove anything nefarious about this new Clark Kent, it’s up to Lois to try to figure out what’s going on! To do that she pretends to the Lois Lane of New 52 Universe, and as expected things don’t go completely as planned. Jurgens continues to do an excellent job here with how he handles the characters. Everyone feels right, in that their motivations, manner of speech and actions...

They say you should never have a favorite child -- or at least admit to it -- but when you're the Marvel king and you're 92 years old, you can pretty much do whatever you want. Stan Lee just went ahead and named his favorite Marvel actor, his favorite cameo (coming up), and even his favorite superhero costume and what makes it "the best thing we did." Stan opened up on the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe on "Larry King Now" and you can watch clips from the talk below.
One thing Larry King asked about is the disappointing reviews and box office for the "Fantastic Four" reboot. Stan Lee co-created the characters, and he has defended the casting of Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm. Larry asked how Stan felt about the harsh reception to the movie. "Well it was probably because I didn't have a cameo in it," Stan joked,...

After 23 unbelievable, uninterrupted days of screenings, today marks the Closing Night of the 19th edition of the Fantasia Film Festival. There is always a sadness lingering in the air on the last day. I often compare it to the feeling you get as a kid on the final day of summer camp. You get to spend an entire month with a group of friends from around the world knowing you might not have the opportunity to see some of these people again for an entire year. Known worldwide as North America’s longest-running genre film festival, Fantasia is special because of the people who not only make it happen but also for those of us who choose to spend the beautiful hot summer days crowded inside a gloomy theatre to watch movies we might not have the chance to see otherwise. And for the sixth consecutive year, the event succeeded...

Dennis Dugan and Adam Sandler are a comedy dream team, according to the director himself. The two have worked together on a number of films, including Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, You Don't Mess With the Zohan, Grown Ups, Just Go with It, Jack and Jill and Grown Ups 2. Sandler has been slammed in the press after the poor performance of Pixels, which didn't meet box office expectations in its opening weekend and was savaged by critics and moviegoers alike. Dugan, however, has Sandler's back, telling The Hollywood Reporter, "How f--king dare anybody say that he's a s---ty [entertainer]!" Pixels is playing in 42 percent of the international marketplace, where it...

Adam Sandler has done it again. And by "it," we mean incite the wrath of movies critics everywhere. Pixels . his latest film under his Happy Madison production company . lost the top spot at the weekend box office to Ant-Man, currently sits at 18% from 104 reviews, and has taken a beating on social media. Despite this seeming failure of a film, however, Sandler has one person in his camp, Dennis Dugan, and he has some choice words for Sandler haters. Dugan directed Sandler in Happy Gilmore before reuniting with the actor for Big Daddy, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Grown Ups, You Don.t Mess With Zohan, Jack and Jill, and Grown Ups 2. In other words, he.s been hearing all the awful stuff critics have been saying about his films with Sandler for years. He.s garnered quite a bit of animosity, and in a recent interview with...

Warning: Daredevil comics and potential season 2 spoilers.
The success of Netflix's Daredevil show led to the unexpected (and entirely welcome) decision to commission a second season which will begin filming before the end of the year. For this week’s spotlight piece, I wanted to sort of go back to the start of the series and take a look at someone who doesn’t get the respect that they deserve from the masses. Today, that person is Adam Sandler, one of the kings of comedy who also has a flair for drama when he decides to go that route. He’s a huge titan of studio comedy, for sure, but he’s got a load of talent for when he chooses to get serious. The laughs have shot him to the A-list, but when he’s gone for depth and emotion, he’s shown that he’s got some acting chops as well. He’s rather underrated overall, so a spotlight today is definitely in the cards for him. Sandler got his start towards the A-list through television when he was cast on Saturday Night Live...

There’s just something about The Bachelor/Bachelorette and Wipeout that feels connected. Maybe it’s that we’re used to seeing these people wipeout in just about every way, so watching them get punched in the face seems like the next logical step. Or maybe it is just that it’s way too fun to watch some of the most ridiculous personalities in reality television swim through mud.

How did Marvel's comic book mythologies and storytelling influence Joss Whedon's first big creation, Buffy The Vampire Slayer?
Feature
Before 2012's The Avengers (or Avengers Assemble for us in good ol' Blighty), Joss Whedon had already made his mark on comic books, with his acclaimed run on Astonishing X-Men and his own ongoing Buffy The Vampire Slayer series with Dark Horse. And for many fans – myself included – his step into the world of comic books and superheroes made perfect sense. Why? Not just because he's an exceptional writer, but because Buffy was a flat-out superhero show with plenty of nods to various comic books.
Looking back on Buffy now, after The Avengers and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, these comic-book influences are even more fascinating. Not only was he writing or overseeing a weekly superhero story in a time when such characters were still viewed...

Is the new independent comedy-drama All the Light in the Sky about a Malibu-dwelling, 45-year-old actress called Marie and her dealings with the film industry? Or is it about why we need to accept, and engage with, change — be it personal or global? Actually, this latest film from prolific writer-director Joe Swanberg (Drinking Buddies) is technically both. However, star Jane Adams, who cowrote All the Light in the Sky with Swanberg, insists the movie is much more a philosophical rumination rather than a Tinseltown dissection.

The underappreciated films of 1999 are the focus in our last list of 90s overlooked greats...
The year 1999 was a significant year for film in many ways. Apart from being the year that George Lucas began his Star Wars prequels with The Phantom Menace, it also saw the release of The Blair Witch Project, a horror film which became one of the first to use the internet as a marketing tool, resulting in a massive hit. The Matrix ushered in a new age of special effects filmmaking, arguably paving the way for the superhero blockbusters crowding into multiplexes today.
Mainly, though, 1999 was simply a brilliant year for film. Justly lauded movies like Fight Club, The Green Mile and Eyes Wide Shut aside, there were a huge number of films that didn't get the critical or financial success they deserved - so many,...

In perhaps the strangest casting rumor in some time, Radar Online reports that Ben Affleck is after his friend and neighbor Larry David ("Curb Your Enthusiasm") for a role in the upcoming "Batman vs. Superman" movie. Their source claims:
"The pair chatted about the idea with earnest abandon throughout the course of Emmy weekend. Larry has long been courted by the big budget superhero industrial complex, being linked to roles in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man sequels nearly a decade ago.
But Ben is somebody he trusts and enjoys spending time with and this could be the right situation for Larry to finally appear in a huge-grossing hit film.
Fun speculation that it could be for the famed Superman enemy role of Mr. Myxlplyx could make this piece more exciting, since Larry is a dead ringer for the character."
Their source also claims that Affleck is taking over part of the production,...

As if casting for Batman vs. Superman wasn’t controversial enough already, we’re now hearing that Larry David might be up for a role in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel. Apparently, our new Batman, Mr. Ben Affleck, is good friends with David and wants him to play the role of one of Superman’s enemies, Mister Mxyzptlk.
“The pair chatted about the idea with earnest abandon throughout the course of Emmy weekend. According to a Radar Online insider, Ben Affleck is campaigning for his friend and neighbor Larry David (creator of Seinfeld and star of HBO's hilarious Curb Your Enthusiasm) to play a role in Zack Snyder's Man Of Steel sequel. The site then suggest that the character is that of Mister Mxyzptlk, but later on in their report they refer to it as "fun speculation", so I wouldn't put too much stock in that. Anyway, here's what they have to say. “The pair chatted about the idea with earnest abandon throughout the course of Emmy weekend. But Ben is somebody he trusts and enjoys spending time with and this could be the right situation for Larry to finally appear in a huge-grossing hit film.
