While not much came of the last two show ideas ABC bought from Kelly Ripa and her husband/former All My Children costar Mark Consuelos, the network seems to believe the third time’s the charm. Deadline reports that the couple's Milojo Productions sold yet another pilot to ABC. (A multi-camera comedy from General Hospital: Nightshift head writer Sri Rao was scooped up last month). The latest is a show called Poor Pam. It’ll see the producing couple team up with writing duo Andrew Leeds and David Lampson for a half-hour comedy about “that friend everyone feels bad for.” The female protagonist is described as “single, unemployed, almost broke, living in the shadow of her famous sister” while still “always [looking] on the bright side of life.” Our initial instinct is to roll our eyes, but hey, maybe Pam's optimism will rub off on audiences like it clearly has on ABC.

Exclusive: Producing duo Kelly Ripa and husband Mark Consuelos have teamed with writing duo Andrew Leeds and David Lampson, creators of last season’s pilot Brenda Forever, for another half-hour comedy project with a female protagonist. Poor Pam, which has been set up at ABC through ABC Studios, centers on Poor Pam, that friend everyone feels bad for. Single, unemployed, almost broke, living in the shadow of her famous sister — everyone has it better than Pam. But that doesn’t get her down. Poor Pam always looks on the bright side of life, and she’s always ready to go another round, no matter how many times she gets dropped on her ass. Leeds and Lampson will write the script and executive produce with Ripa and Consuelos. The project was developed internally at Ripa and Consuelos’ Milojo Prods with Albert Bianchini, who oversees the company’s projects. This marks Milojo...

Actor who made her name in comedy films as an acid-tongued, gravel-voiced tyrant
Eileen Brennan, who has died aged 80, had been a stage actor since the late 1950s, but it was as a largely comic presence in Us cinema of the 1970s and early 1980s that she was most widely admired. As the pitiless Captain Doreen Lewis, putting a dippy new recruit – Goldie Hawn – through her paces in the hit military comedy Private Benjamin (1980), she wore her trademark look: a solid frizz of red hair, a clenched, sneering smile and an expression of withering incredulity. Then there was the gravelly voice: a heard-it-all whine to match that seen-it-all face. It sounded like bourbon on the rocks. Actual rocks, that is.
Captain Lewis epitomised the sort of role Brennan was best at – and which she was still playing as late as 2001, when she made the first in a run of appearances...

Veteran actress Eileen Brennan, nominated for an Academy Award for "Private Benjamin," died Sunday at the age of 80. The stage, television, and film star passed away after battling bladder cancer.
Brennan started out in the theater, originating the role of Irene Molloy in Broadway's "Hello, Dolly!" From there, she graduated to feature films, becoming a prolific and recognizable supporting actress in movies like "The Last Picture Show"; "The Sting," opposite Paul Newman; and "Clue," as Mrs. Peacock. Director Peter Bogdanovich was a big fan of Brennan's, casting her in "Last Picture Show," "Daisy Miller," and "At Long Last Love."
Her most acclaimed role came in 1980's "Private Benjamin," in which she played the stern, tough-talking captain of Goldie Hawn's character. Brennan received an Oscar nomination, and later, when she reprised the part in the TV adaptation, won a Golden Globe and Emmy.
In 1982, after dining with Hawn, Brennan was hit by a car.

Here's a pilot casting that is sure to get fans of "Heroes" buzzing.
The show's co-star Sendhil Ramamurthy has joined NBC's comedic drama pilot "Rex Is Not Your Lawyer" as a regular.
Jane Curtin also has been cast in the pilot that stars David Tennant as Rex Alexander, a top Chicago litigator who begins suffering panic attacks and takes up coaching clients to represent themselves in court.
Ramamurthy will play an ambitious but good-natured lawyer who was in Rex's shadow until Rex's career switch and whose friendship with Rex becomes complicated when he falls in love with his pal's fiancee (Abigail Spencer).
For Ramamurthy, the casting is in second position to "Heroes." But, given that both shows are at the same network and are produced by the same studio, Ums, it's safe to assume that Ramamurthy would be free to do "Rex" should the pilot go to series for next season.

David Semel, who directed the pilots for "Heroes" and "Life," has come on board to helm the comedic legal drama from Universal Media Studios and BermanBraun.
He will also executive produce with veteran Barry Schindel (who is attached as showrunner), Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein. Leeds and Lampson serve as supervising producers.

I'll give NBC credit for trying. The fourth place network just keeps throwing what they can at the wall hoping they can get something ... anything ... to stick. Everybody knows that legal dramas work, but thankfully, this isn't yet another Law & Order spin-off. Unless it's Law & Order: Do It Yourself.
Rex Is Not Your Lawyer is a dramedy about an anxiety-filled lawyer who pushes his clients to represent themselves in court because he just can't handle it. NBC has given a pilot order to Rex Is Not Your Lawyer, which could just as easily be them wanting to know how the hell the creators are going to make this work.
Rex is a project from the winners of Bravo's 2005 competition series Situation: Comedy: actor Andrew Leeds and novelist David Lampson. The fact that it's an hour-long series means it's probably going to take its legal side at least somewhat seriously,...

Welcome to your Monday morning television briefing. Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada (Rush Hour 3) has joined the cast of ABC's Lost in a recurring role for its sixth and final season. Details of Sanada's character are being kept firmly under wraps as is the number of episodes that he'll ultimately appear in. Sanada's casting comes on the heels of the announcement that Deadwood's John Hawkes had signed on to the drama series as Lennon, the spokesperson and translator for a foreign conglomerate. Could these two roles be connected in any way, given Sanada's Japanese background? Hmmm.... (Hollywood Reporter) Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello is reporting that Jayma Mays (Glee) will return to NBC's Heroes, where she will reprise her role as Hiro's former love interest Charlie in one episode of the superpowered drama series. But didn't Charlie die? Yep. "As the dying time-traveler zips back and forth through the ages to accomplish his bucket list,...

NBC has handed a pilot order to the legal comedic drama "Rex Is Not Your Lawyer," from Universal Media Studios and BermanBraun.
Written by Andrew Leeds and David Lampson, "Rex" centers on a lawyer who suffers panic attacks and takes up coaching clients to represent themselves in court.
"Law & Order" veteran Barry Schindel has come on board as showrunner on the project. He will executive produce with Leeds, Lampson, Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun.
Actor Leeds and novelist Lampson got their break as TV writers in 2005 when their comedy script "Stephen's Life" beat out 10,000 other entries to win Bravo's reality series "Situation: Comedy."
"Rex" was one of the first projects Berman and Lloyd developed after the 2007 launch of their company. They originally sold it to NBC that year under their first-look deal with NBC Universal. It first was sidelined by the writers strike; then NBC brass passed on it.

ABC on Thursday became the latest network to trim its 2008-09 development slate, citing the effects of the writers strike on this year's pilot season.
ABC went for a deep cut, releasing about 35-40 scripts, roughly one-third of its slate and the most of any network. Most of the projects are said to hail from the network's sister studio, ABC Studios, and about 15 are believed to be comedy scripts.
ABC's list of dismissed projects is said to include Alana Sanko's Get Out and Rob Lotterstein's One Big Happy. Both are executive produced by ABC Studios-based producers, Salma Hayek and Emile Levisetti, respectively.
Also let go are untitled scripts from Laurice Elehwany, Todd Graff and the duo of Dave Lampson and Andrew Leeds. Graff had been developing his project with non-writing producers Nina Wass and Gene Stein, whose overall deal with ABC Studios was terminated earlier this month, also as a fallout from the strike.
