Longtime boxing commentator Larry Merchant was rushed to a hospital in Los Angeles last night and is in the critical care unit, according to a report.
The 92-year-old broadcaster, best known for his long stint with HBO, was taken to a Los Angeles hospital around 6 p.m./Pt Thursday, according to TMZ, which sites sources with direct knowledge of the situation.
Merchant was a staple of HBO’s boxing coverage from 1978 until his retirement in 2012. He provided commentary for such HBO programs as HBO World Championship Boxing, HBO Boxing After Dark and various HBO pay-per-view boxing telecasts. He offered expert analysis opposite his longtime partner at the mic, Jim Lampley, who provided the blow-by-blow.
After HBO discontinued its regular boxing coverage in 2018, ESPN boxing analyst Dan Rafael, who considered Merchant among the all-time great boxing broadcasters, quoted Merchant as saying about HBO’s boxing coverage, “Once upon a time we were a promising kid.

“Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel” is coming to an end at HBO.
The sports talk series has been a part of the premium cabler’s lineup for 29 years. Gumbel first launched the series in 1995 and has aired over 300 episodes to date.
“Since day one at ‘Real Sports’ we’ve consistently tried to look beyond the scoreboard, and focus instead on the many societal issues inherent in the world of sports,” Gumbel said in a statement. “In the process we’ve had the opportunity to tell complex stories about race, gender, class, opportunity and so much more. Being able to do so at HBO for almost 3 decades has been very gratifying. I’m proud of the imprint we’ve made, so I’m ready to turn the page. Although goodbyes are never easy, I’ve decided that now’s the time to move on.”

Less than 9 months after leaving office, Donald Trump has lined up a fun new job.
Trump, and his son, Donald Trump Jr, have been hired to commentate on Triller’s upcoming boxing event, headlined by the Evander Holyfield-Vitor Belfort match, set for Saturday. During a so-called “alternate telecast,” the two will provide commentary for all four of the scheduled Triller Fight Club matches, ESPN reported Tuesday.
The Trumps’ fight commentary will be one of two options for people shelling out $49.95 to watch 58-year-old Holyfield and 44-year-old Vitor Belfort beat each other up. Longtime HBO fight commentator Jim Lampley will call the official telecast alongside former welterweight world champion Shawn Porter. Either way, the event will stream on Fite.TV.

Donald Trump To Provide Boxing Commentary For Triller’s Evander Holyfield-Vitor Belfort Bout On 9/11
Donald Trump has long fancied himself a boxing expert.
In the ’90s, he put on the Mike Tyson-Michael Spinks bout at his Atlantic City casino. As the 45th President of the United States, he pardoned heavyweight champion Jack Johnson in an Oval Office ceremony attended by Lennox Lewis, Deontay Wilder and Sylvester Stallone. He also claimed to have won $20 million betting on Evander Holyfield when he upset Mike Tyson in 1996, though no sports book could ever confirm Trump placed such a bet.
That last story may surface again on Saturday, when the former president will “provide guest commentary” for the heavyweight boxing match between former champion Holyfield, 58, and former UFC champ Vitor Belfort, 44. The bout is set for Saturday, September 11 at the Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida. It’s promoted by Triller, the social media platform co-owned by former Relativity Media boss Ryan Kavanaugh.

Top CAA agent Nick Khan, who was Co-Head of Television, is departing the agency to join client WWE as President & Chief Revenue Officer, reporting directly to WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon.
Khan fills the void left by the January exit of Co-Presidents George Barrios and Michelle Wilson who were ousted in January amid a rocky last year for the company. Unlike other sports franchises, which were shut down by the coronavirus pandemic in March, WWE continued to produce its flagship weekly TV series, Raw and SmackDown. Still, it too has been grappling with the effects from the pandemic, along with declining TV ratings.

After 45 years, HBO is officially out of the fight game. But HBO Boxing anchor Jim Lampley is not going down without a fight.
Or at least, the popular pugilism host and journalist wasn’t signing off of the premium-cable channel without taking full advantage of the chance to deliver a lovely farewell to his televised passion.
Rattling off some of the legendary names in the HBO Boxing “family” — including those we’ve lost — Lampley acknowledged the unfortunate truth as to why At&T-Time Warner decided to shutter his bread-and-butter department.

HBO said today that it will end its live boxing programming at the end of 2018, a final bell at the pay-cable network that made the sport famous with the advent pay-per-view and by showcasing superstars from Mike Tyson, Oscar de La Hoya and Sugar Ray Leonard to Floyd Mayweather and Roy Jones Jr.
HBO Sports’ first live boxing broadcast was in 1973, when it covered George Foreman’s victory over Joe Frazier in Jamaica for the world heavyweight title. Its 1,100-plus fights since then included Evander Holyfield-Foreman in 1991, one of the first PPV fights, on Tvko (later renamed HBO PPV).
But viewership ratings have been in decline, partly because of the rise in popularity of Mma, and also the proliferation of outlets that feature their own boxing programming. The hyped Floyd Mayweather-Connor McGregor fight last year? It scored 4.3 million PPV buys in the U.S., the second most ever — but...

After 45 years, HBO said on Thursday that the network will no longer feature live boxing matches starting in 2019.
“Going forward in 2019, we will be pivoting away from programming live boxing on HBO,” the network said in a programming statement. “As always, we will remain open to looking at events that fit our programming mix. This could include boxing, just not for the foreseeable future.”
The pay-cable network currently has no more fights scheduled past the Oct. 27 Madison Square Garden middleweight title fight between Danny Jacobs and Sergey Derevianchenko. An HBO rep says its unclear if the network will have any matches in November or December.

Nothing is more frustrating than watching great actors busting their balls in a film that can’t live up to their individual performances. It’s a too common occurrence in Hollywood these days and is a perfect description of Antoine Fuqua's latest thriller, “Southpaw.” The first in a slew of boxing films to hit theaters over the next year, “Southpaw” finds a ripped Jake Gyllenhaal playing Billy Hope (yep, that’s his actual name), a cocky champion boxer who seemingly has it all. There is the beautiful wife, Maureen (Rachel McAdams), who tames his inner demons, the huge mansion in the New York City suburbs and a wonderful daughter (Tony Award winner Oona Laurence) he simply adores. Clearly, it won't last long. A few nights after winning his latest bout, Hope’s life is turned upside down when Maureen is accidentally killed during a post-awards reception brawl. Before you know it,...

HBO's "7 Days in Hell" airs this Saturday, July 11, at 10 Pm Et/Pt and whew, it's not good. Starring Andy Samberg and "Game of Thrones" star Kit Harington as rival tennis players, the 45-minute special is a send up of the 2010 Wimbledon match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut, which ran for three days. Bad boy American, Aaron Williams (Samberg) and British home favorite Charles Poole (Harington) battle it out over the course of seven days with interviews and vignettes spliced in-between each day's play and with every passing minute it weighs heavier and heavier on your soul. Williams is something of an Andre Agassi, tennis bad boy that falls on hard times after killing a linesman with an errant serve, while Poole is a dimwitted Brit who can hardly tie his own shoes. Everything from weather to sex with streakers, phone calls from the Queen of England, sex with streakers,...

The two men on the tennis court look exhausted, hitting the ball weakly over the net; one of them, the guy with the glorious mane of Andre Agassi hair, barely has enough energy to throw his racquet and yell obscenities at the judges. Andy Samberg in 7 Days in HellPhoto: HBO HBO will premiere the movie 7 Days in Hell on Saturday, July 11 (10:00-11:00 p.m. Et/Pt) as Andy Samberg and Kit Harington star as tennis stars Aaron Williams, a hyper-malcontent American bad boy, and Charles Poole, a dim-witted prodigy who carried England's hopes for a championship on his shoulders. Today the first full trailer for the movie has arrived. Clearly inspired by the 2010 Wimbledon match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut, which went on for 11 hours and 5 minutes over the course of three days, the story here is set in 2001 wherein the two tennis rivals play a seven-day, five-set marathon. The movie also features appearances by Fred Armisen, David Copperfield, Lena Dunham, Chris Evert, Will Forte, Karen Gillan, Filip Hammar, Jim Lampley, Howie Mandel, John McEnroe, Soledad O'Brien, Michael Sheen, Mary Steenburgen, June Squibb and Serena Williams. Hollywood has had a long love affair with the heist sub-genre. Dating as far back as the silent film era with 1928’s Alias Jimmy Valentine, and transcending various genres like westerns (The War Wagon), war (Kelly’s Heroes) and even animation (Toy Story 3), the heist has tantalized our fantasies and outsmarted our wits for decades. The Producers Guild of America announced the winners of its theatrical motion picture and TV nominations for the 2013 PGA Awards. Check out the full list of nominees and winners (marked in red) below. This year's big winner was Ben Affleck's "Argo," which means that the film will likely also go on to win the Oscar for Best Pictures since the PGA Awards predict the Academy Award winner almost 80% of the time, including last year when PGA and the Oscars both selected "The Artist." In the animation category, "Wreck-It Ralph" won, beating out Pixar's "Brave." On television, "Modern Family" was once again chosen as the best comedy and "Homeland" as the best drama. Theatrical Motion Picture Nominees: Theatrical Motion Pictures: * Argo * Beasts of the Southern Wild * Django Unchained * Les Miserables * Life of Pi * Lincoln * Moonrise Kingdom * Silver Linings Playbook * Skyfall * Zero Dark Thirty Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures: * Wreck-It Ralph * Brave...

Oh yes it still hurts that Ben Affleck was not given a Best Director Oscar nomination, yet his fantastic film "Argo" continues its ascension to Oscar glory! The film took home the top prize at the Producers Guild of America Awards taking home the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.
So guess which film will win the Oscar Best Picture? Yup, it will be "Argo!" Why? Well, Hollywood really loves movies about them and "Argo" is about a movie of a fake movie in order to help free some Americans trapped in Iran during the hostage crisis.
And, the PGA award is a significant Academy Awards precursor. Only seven times in 24 years has the PGA winner failed to win a Best Picture Oscar. So "Argo" has a strong chance.
I'm also happy that "Searching for Sugar Man" won the Documentary category, and not so happy...

The Producers Guild of America has announced its nominations for best productions of the year, in what is often looked to as an indicator for how the Academy Awards may go.
The guild selected 10 films — most of them common guesses for the group that could make up the Oscar list of the best films of 2012: Argo, Lincoln, Les Misérables, among others.
The one surprise: Skyfall. No 007 film has ever cracked the Best Picture list, but if this nomination is any indication, that could change when the Oscar nods are revealed Jan. 10.

HBO’s Game of Thrones, Showtime’s Homeland, CBS’ Big Bang Theory and FX’s Louie were among the nominees in the top categories for the annual Producers Guild of America awards.
There’s a lot of overlap here with the 2012 Emmy award nominations, with a few exceptions: HBO’s Boardwalk Empire missed landing a slot for best drama series (there were six Emmy nominees and five for PGA). While on the comedy side, HBO’s Girls and Veep weren’t nominated, but Louie was. If you’re wondering why Comedy Central’s Emmy favorite The Daily Show with Jon Stewart...

Could there be a new trend in the field of feature-length documentaries? After last year’s Oscar winner Undefeated and the surprise box office success of this year’s Searching For Sugarman, are we seeing a spate of “feel-good” doc? They’ve had an unfair rep as dour and somber for quite some time now. Many film goers avoid them completely, feeling that they’re the movie equivalent of a dull lecture or homework (“shudder”)! But The Other Dream Team is a truly uplifting movie. And to quote one of the film’s subjects, “What a long, strange, trip it’s been”.
This is primarily the story of the 1992 Lithuanian basketball team whose tale really begins in 1940. That’s when the Ussr, in order to battle the Axis menace, took over the country of Lithuania. During those many dark days of occupation Lithuanians sought relief by indulging in their favorite national sport of basketball.

Check out the latest trailer for Marius Markevicius The Other Dream Team documentary with names like Sarunas Marciulionis, Arvydas Sabonis, David Remnick, Jim Lampley, Bill Walton and Mickey Hart in the mix. The Film Arcade sends this one to theaters on September 28th, under the direction of Marius Markevicius, who also produced alongside Jon Weinbach. After leading the Ussr to a gold medal (and victory over the U.S.A.) at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Sarunas Marciulionis and Arvydas Sabonis were poster boys for their oppressor’s sports machine. Four year later, after the fall of the Soviet Union, they emerged as symbols of democracy, helping their country break free from the shackles of Communism, and willing newly independent Lithuania to the medal stand at the Barcelona Olympics.

A decade ago, I helped oversee a “table read” at the HBO offices in Century City of an exciting new screenplay, "Save Ferris," a parody/sequel to the legendary John Hughes’ movie, "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off." The organizer was an aspiring producer, Holly Wiersma ("Factory Girl," "Wonderland") who had talked almost the entire cast of the then-new “That 70’s Show” into reading. She had help: The HBO producer involved was legendary sports announcer Jim Lampley. (How do you think we got such swanky offices for a table read?) But it was only in...

A few weeks ago, we pointed you to "High on Crack Street", the real documentary we watch being shot in director David O. Russell's film "The Fighter." Today over at Fandor, critic Kevin B. Lee posted "Micky Versus Marky -- The Same Fight Twice," a superb video essay that goes deeper into the gulf between fact and fiction in the film. It compares the original fight between boxers Micky Ward and Shea Neary with the fictionalized version that serves as the climax of "The Fighter."
That comparison is important because Russell and producer/star Mark Wahlberg's visual approach to the boxing matches in "The Fighter" is to mimic reality: to approximate the look and feel of televised boxing matches. That choice, in turn, suits the entire film, which gets deep into the gritty realities of working-class Lowell, Massachusetts and crack addiction.

David O Russell takes on the story of boxer Micky Ward, and comes up with one of the best films of the year. Here's our review of The Fighter...
'Irish' Micky Ward was one of the hardest men in the boxing game during his time in the squared circle. He never backed down from a fight, and what he lacked in speed, quickness, and defense he made up for with an ability to take punishment, a drive to win, and a liver-quivering left hook to the body.
This unique concoction of drive and gluttony for punishment comes, no doubt, from his family life, which is equal parts colorful and hard-luck. This tale, of a man's ability to transcend family problems and rise to great heights in his chosen profession is the centerpiece of David O Russell's star-studded new sports drama, The Fighter.
It's not a new story, by any means.
