Daniel Kramer, a rock photographer who captured some of the most iconic Bob Dylan images of the Sixties, including the covers of Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited, died April 29, Rolling Stone confirmed. He was 91.
Kramer first encountered Bob Dylan when he watched him perform “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll” on The Steve Allen Show in 1964. “The lyrics were startling to me,” he told Rolling Stone in 2016. “They were so poetic. I knew this wasn’t an ordinary event. I knew this guy was special.”

On a freezing cold day in the winter of 1966, photographer Jerry Schatzberg and Bob Dylan drove over to the far West Side of Manhattan to shoot some photos for the cover of his new album Blonde on Blonde. They wound up near a brick building right off the West Side Highway and shot for about 30 minutes until Schatzberg’s hand’s were shivering and creating blurry images. “We shot a lot of sharp ones that day,” says Schatzberg. “I was delighted he picked a blurry one for the cover. After five years of development and six months of rehearsals, the multi-million-dollar stage musical adaptation of King Kong is now playing (check out our earlier article for tons of info), and the show's creators unveiled the full-size Kong in a preview of a scene from the show, including the musical number “Full Moon Lullaby,” which you can watch below (courtesy of Australian site Theatre People): King Kong on Stage: Full Moon Lullaby The Australia-based King Kong is directed by Daniel Kramer, with an international cast featuring over 40 actors, singers, dancers and circus performers, as well as the one-ton, six-meter-tall Kong designed by Sonny Tilders (creator of the live arena events “Walking With Dinosaurs” and “How to Train Your Dragon”) and operated by master puppeteer Peter Wilson. King Kong is now playing at Melbourne's Regent Theatre, and you can see more images, videos and updates at the show's official site.

This is a story of two Kongs. King Kong the six metre tall marionette, weighing in at more than a tonne, that draws gasps from the audience when it appears on stage, team of ninja puppeteers at every joint – enormous, majestic, unlike any other theatrical star. And King Kong the musical, confused both musically and narratively – packed full of ambition and innovation, but unable to pull its constituent parts into one satisfying whole.
Admittedly, once Kong reaches the stage, you can't think of much else. Really this is a puppet like no other. The sheer scale of him is astonishing enough, but the expression and emotion his operators manage to impart, scurrying across the stage and the beast in a dance to rival the most complicated chorus number, is incredible. A breathtaking scene in which the giant gorilla does battle with an equally gargantuan serpent is unlike...

The creators of the first-ever musical adaptation of King Kong promise “the most ambitious theatrical event of the decade,” with a multi-million dollar production blending new technology and ancient puppetry to bring the massive Kong to life onstage. Five years in the making, the Australia-based show is directed by Daniel Kramer, with an international cast featuring over 40 actors, singers, dancers and circus performers, as well as a one-ton, six-meter-tall Kong designed by Sonny Tilders, whose company Global Creatures created the mind-blowing live arena events “Walking With Dinosaurs” and “How to Train Your Dragon.” Unlike effects guru Carlo Rambaldi's famously failed attempt at creating a life-sized Kong for the 1976 film version, Tilders' new creation taps into his own background in bringing dinosaurs and dragons to life in real-time. “It was going to be the most complex creature we ever made,” he said of the half-robot, half-marionette Kong design, which will...

“Seasons of Ape-Human Love”? “Seventy-Six Fighter Planes”? “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going (to Climb Down the Empire State Building)”? These made-up songs will not appear in a new musical based on the classic 1933 film King Kong — but the show itself is very much real. According to a press release, Kong is set to premiere in June 2013 at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre.

Bob Dylan, legendary singer/songwriter, is about to be featured in a Paris exhibition at the Cite de la Musique, where rare photographs of the singer from the mid-1960s will be on displaying, purporting to capture the metamorphosis from protest folk singer to huge rock star, reports the Afp.
The exhibition is titled "Bob Dylan: The Rock Explosion 1961-66" and will feature 60 photographs from New York photographer Daniel Kramer.
"I didn't know much about this music but when I heard this song, and this young guy with a guitar, and no other musicians, it was overwhelming," says Kramer. "The lyrics were so strong, and he was so young, and willing to say things that people didn't say on public entertainment... So I thought he would be a very good subject for a portrait for my portfolio."
The one-hour session quickly turned into five hours and then the two met up over the next year,...

I think fans of singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright would agree that his best work has an operatic quality. His performances on record and in concert—for instance, his tribute to the late Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall in 2006—achieve an emotional depth and intensity that call to mind a great tenor pouring out his heart on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera house in New York or La Scala in Milan. So, when I heard that Wainwright had written a traditional opera that just opened at the Manchester International Festival in Manchester, England, I wanted to know more. Prima Donna, as Wainwright christened his creation, had its premiere at the Manchester Festival on July 10 and will play to audiences there through July 19. Set in Paris in 1970 and performed in French, Prima Donna is the story of Régine St. Laurent, an aging opera star (with a name that certainly does recall...
