How can the filmmakers of low-budget independent films formulate sales and distribution strategies at a global level when they don’t have the same resources wielded by the larger production companies? As part of this week’s IFFR Pro Days, the industry program at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, experts gave their opinions.
Kyle Greenberg, head of marketing and distribution at U.S. company Utopia, said that filmmakers, especially ones helming independent and guerrilla productions, should be “the biggest advocates of their movies” and actively involved in the promotion, marketing and sales strategy of their titles.
“If you’re not advocating for yourself, you’re already losing. Filmmakers need to be thinking about marketing and audiences. If you are making a film in isolation, it could be art, but you are not thinking of where the movie lives,” he said.
“When we acquire movies, we are thinking about potential audiences,...

Didier Konings' Witte Wieven is a very short feature film, debuting at the IFFR, but made as part of a series of television horror films, presented by the famous Dutch filmmaker Martin Koolhoven. Koolhoven, who might be most well known to American audiences because of his modern western Brimstone, used his power as The Netherlands' most popular current working director this side of Paul Verhoeven, to launch new genre talent in the Netherlands, this time as a producer. There have been many people working in the margins of Dutch genre cinema for a long time, but Koolhoven Presents represents part of a big wave of interesting genre films and filmmakers. The future of Dutch genre film looks bright indeed, if...

Pearce reaches Nicolas Cage levels of menace as he torments Dakota Fanning’s fiercely defiant homesteader in Martin Koolhoven’s freaky thriller
This epically long, lurid, violent western from Dutch film-maker Martin Koolhoven has a kind of Tarantino-ish prolixity and narrative ingenuity. Despite its very indulgent length, it never bores.
Three intriguingly arranged chapters keep you wanting to know more – but the fourth and final segment relies on an outrageously unconvincing “escape” scene and a sheriff’s arrest that needs to be explained with a Pov-shift flashback that does not entirely make sense.

In Brimstone, a Western that’s the English-language debut of Dutch director Martin Koolhoven, young actress Dakota Fanning amazes with her best performance yet, giving life to a character that since the first chapter (the film is divided in four) is revealed as unique. Liz is a mute woman who, with the help of her little daughter, assists women in labor. While the setting is the Old American West, her life is relatively calm as she lives with her husband, stepson and daughter in a town that doesn’t seem to be as wild as one can expect. A lot changes, though, when a complicated labor forces the protagonist to save the baby or the mother -- she ends up keeping alive the latter -- something the...

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Assassin’s Creed (Justin Kurzel)
Over three-dozen times has Hollywood tried their hand at the videogame adaptation, and the results, to say the least, have left much to be desired. Perhaps it’s the lack of venerable source material, but translating the entertainment factor of videogames — an experience in which the user often repeatedly fails until some enjoyment is ultimately had — has most adaptations feeling like one is watching characters play in God mode,...

Women never have a particularly great time in Westerns. Aside from the odd outlier, the genre generally features them as either helpless victims or sex workers, though both endure intense violence at the hands of men. Martin Koolhoven’s Brimstone takes this to new extremes; spending most of its 140 punishing minutes inflicting humiliation, misery and trauma upon its female characters.
By the time the credits roll, you’ll have seen women intimidated, leered at, strangled, punched, whipped, beaten, gagged, having their tongues cut out, sexually menaced by their fathers, repeatedly raped and eventually executed. It’s a smörgåsbord of misogyny: a film populated by yellow-teethed, half feral, sexually psychotic men preying on women whose only plausible escape is suicide. Brimstone is less a battle of the sexes and more a massacre.

Reverent and ridiculous in equal measure, Martin Koolhoven’s “Brimstone” is a wild pseudo-Western that trembles beneath the biblical weight of its comically grim story. Told with a steady tone that marries the anivine retribution of the Old Testament with the heightened slickness of a graphic novel, this gruesome carnival of debasement may be set in the lawless frontiers of 19th century America, but it might be more accurately located somewhere between Sodom and Gomorrah and “Sin City.” It’s the kind of movie in which an actor from “Game of Thrones” murders someone who’s taking a shit in an outhouse — the kind of movie in which a dying man, choking on a noose made out of his own intestines, still finds the spirit to tell his wife that he loves her.

The Love of a Preacher Man: Koolhoven’s Pseudo-Feminist Western an Ambitiously Grotesque Affront
Unveiling the most expensive Dutch film production since Paul Verhoeven’s Black Book (2006), Martin Koolhoven’s epically structured Brimstone is a dizzying revision of the spaghetti Western, prizing the perspective of a female protagonist (although no less rape filled than the frames of Sergio Leone) and featuring a concoction of varied international flavors in this cruel portrait of the American frontier.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out….but mostly movies.
This Past Weekend:
It was absolutely no surprise that Hugh Jackman’s last Wolverine movie Logan would top the box office, but it actually ended up doing even better than my prediction when actual numbers came in, grossing $88.3 million over the weekend. That makes it the fourth highest X-Movie opening (including Deadpool) but also the biggest R-rated opening for March, defeating 300’s once-impressive $70 million opening. It’s also the fourth highest R-rated opening of all time after Deadpool, The Matrix Reloaded and American Sniper.
The bigger surprise was how well Jordan Peele’s thriller Get Out held up in its second weekend, not only because it was going up against Logan, but also because high-profile horror films tend...

Ever since his breakout role in L.A. Confidential twenty years ago, Australian actor Guy Pearce has been able to create prestige for himself with memorable roles in Christopher Nolan’s early film Memento and others. (For instance, he appeared in two recent Best Picture winners in The Hurt Locker and The King’s Speech). More importantly, he's been able to star in a series of fantastic genre films from The Proposition and Animal Kingdom to the Guillermo del Toro-produced Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and Ridley Scott's Prometheus.
Brimstone, from Dutch filmmaker Martin Koolhoven (Winter in Watime), puts Pearce back in familiar Western territory as The Proposition, playing a very different character, an ultra-pious Dutch preacher known only as “The Reverend” who spends the movie chasing after a young woman, played by Dakota Fanning. There’s a lot more to the story, which is told...

Netherlands suffered from a lack of domestic blockbusters last year, according to film fund CEO.
Doreen Boonekamp, CEO of the Netherlands Film Fund, has expressed her confidence that Dutch films can recapture the local market share they lost last year.
Dutch films performed markedly less well in 2016 than they did the year before. They had a 12.3% share, down from 18.7%.
Overall, box office was slightly up. According to statistics released earlier this month by Fdn (Flmdistributeurs Nederland), there were 34,177,932 cinema admissions in 2016, an increase of 3.7% compared to 2015.
Investments in new locations, renovations and refurbishments, new techniques and concepts and the success of international productions were credited for the growth.
The most popular films of 2016 were Bridget Jones’s Baby, Finding Dory and The Secret Life Of Pets. The sequel Soof 2 (pictured) was the most popular Dutch movie of the year.

It is definitely an exciting time as a film fan to see the Western genre back in a major way in all its forms (horror, thriller, drama). Brimstone, written and directed by Martin Koolhoven, premiered last September at Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff), but now we all can get a glimpse at the film in its official trailer.
From the Press Release: Los Angeles – Oct. 20, 2016 – Momentum Pictures announced today that it has acquired North American rights to the western/thriller Brimstone. The film, which first premiered in September at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival to positive reviews, is written and directed by Martin Koolhoven. Dakota Fanning, Guy Pearce, and Kit Harrington star in western thriller Brimstone, from Dutch director Martin Koolhoven.
Looking to get a Westworld fix featuring the cast of Game Of Thrones? Look no further than western thriller Brimstone, which — in addition to Dakota Fanning, Guy Pearce, and Emilia Jones — has Game Of Thrones alums Kit Harrington (Jon Snow) and Carice van Houten (Melisandre) in starring roles.
The western thriller is directed and written by Dutch filmmaker Martin Koolhoven, his first internationally-financed English-language production, and looks gorgeous, not to mention tense and disturbing. Reviews coming out of the film festivals where it has screened have been mostly positive, though some have criticized the level of violence in the film, which reportedly, by some accounts (like this Variety review), borders on the sadistic.

Late last year it was announced that writer/director Martin Koolhoven's western Brimstone had been picked up for North American release by Momentum pictures who were planning a release in March 2017.
We're big fans of untraditional westerns and Koolhoven's English language debut certainly seemed to fit the bill; a thriller starring Dakota Fanning as Liz, a mute midwife whose life is devastated when a new preacher (Guy Pearce) takes the pulpit in their small town.

Dakota Fanning is all grown up and her new movie has the hard R rating to prove it.
Fanning stars opposite Guy Pearce in the Western thriller, Brimstone, and Et is exclusively premiering the new trailer, which previews just some of the film's "brutal bloody violence, strong sexual content including disturbing behavior, graphic nudity, and language."
We are also debuting the poster, below, with its foreboding tagline: "Retribution is coming."

It’s 2016, and directors are still out here trying to reinvent the Western. Dutch director Martin Koolhoven takes his own stab at the undying genre with the indie film Brimstone, which premiered at the Venice International Film Festival earlier this year. Dakota Fanning and Kit Harington star in roles originally supposed to be played by Mia Wasikowska and Robert Pattinson; they’re joined by Guy Pearce, Carice van Houten, and Emilia Jones in this Western that takes more of a thriller approach to the Old West than the throwback action-adventure Westerns that have been having a moment recently.
Brimstone follows Liz (Fanning), a resilient mother being hunted by her vengeful nemesis, a local reverend (Guy Pearce) who cruelly rules their small town in the Old West. The Reverend tortures and punishes Liz in the name of religion, accusing her of a crime she never committed and very publicly abusing ...

Gus Van Sant’s last few movies haven’t been met with especially warm receptions: “Sea of Trees” was perhaps the most derided film to premiere at Cannes last year, and neither “Promised Land” nor “Restless” fared especially well either. For his next effort, he’s moving to the small screen with “When We Rise,” a docudrama miniseries coming to ABC next year. Watch its first trailer below.

Van Sant will direct the first two hours of the seven-part series, with Dee Rees, Thomas Schlamme and Dustin Lance Black (who also wrote and created) also onboard as directors. “When We Rise” begins in 1971, just two years after the Stonewall riots — whose most recent cinematic depiction came courtesy of Roland Emmerich and wasn’t any more well received than “Sea of Trees” — and continues from there.

Step aside, “Southside With You,” there’s another fictionalized feature film about the life and times of young, pre-presidency Barack Obama on the way. Vikram Gandhi’s “Barry” takes place a few years before Richard Tanne’s recent release, which focused on the budding romance between twenty-something Barack and his future wife Michelle, but looks to dig into a just as essential time period in the eventual leader of the free world’s life.
“Barry” is set during the fall of 1981, when Obama — “Barry” to his friends — arrived in New York City to begin his junior year at Columbia University. Billed as a “nuanced, artistic exploration of a pivotal year in the life” of Obama, the film follows young Obama as he begins to grow into the person and politician he was meant to be, all set against the backdrop of a vibrant city and culture.

After making a bit of a splash on the festival circuit this year, Brimstone is now getting ready to gallop its way into theatres. The new Western from director Martin Koolhoven sends Guy Pearce back to the American frontier as a creepy religious zealot who will most definitely send chills down your spin in the thrilling first trailer for the film.
Co-starring Carice Van Houten, Kit Harington and Dakota Fanning, Brimstone first bowed in Venice before screening in Toronto, and while there’s still no firm release date yet for North America, we’d expect it to debut sometime in early 2017. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to see it, as judging by the footage we get above, it looks like an enjoyable Western that will please those looking for something a little more sinister.

Now that he’s been released from space jail, Guy Pearce is ready to return to the American frontier. He’s set to do so in Martin Koolhoven’s “Brimstone,” a Western set in 19th-century America with, well, fire-and-brimstone overtones. Watch its Dutch trailer below.

“Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing,” Pearce intones in voiceover as the spot opens, “for inwardly they are ravening wolves.” His reverend goes on to describe himself as Jesus’ sheepdog, a righteous shepherd who finds those who’ve strayed from God’s path and helps them get back on it —violently, if need be. At the top of his list is Dakota Fanning, whose mute character he’s planning to punish for a sin she may not have actually committed.

"Retribution is coming." An official trailer has debuted for an indie western titled Brimstone, from Dutch filmmaker Martin Koolhoven, which premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. Brimstone stars Guy Pearce as a violent, ruthless, vengeful preacher who rules over a small town in the Old West. Dakota Fanning plays Liz, a woman "full of heart and grit" who resists his demands and figures out how to fight back. Also starring Kit Harington as the man that comes to save the town, plus Carice van Houten, Paul Anderson, Carla Juri and Emilia Jones. This looks like a very dark drama that retaliates against religious persecution. I'm stunned by how gnarly Pearce looks as the preacher. Don't want to mess with him. Here's the first official trailer for Martin Koolhoven's Brimstone, direct from YouTube (via Tfs): A triumphant epic of survival and a tale of powerful womanhood and...

Premiering at Venice and stopping by Tiff this fall was Brimstone, a new western from director Martin Koolhoven. Starring Guy Pearce as an evil religious zealot as he hunts Dakota Fanning‘s character, the first trailer has now arrived ahead of a likely U.S. release next year. While reactions were mixed from its festival debut, anytime Guy Pearce turns to his darker side, I’ll be in theater and this looks like the ideal scene-chewing performance.

With westerns riding back on the big screen in greater numbers, we’re starting to see some twists on the standard genre formula. Feminist perspectives are breaking through in films like “Jane Got A Gun,” and though that picture faced an uphill battle to get made, the revenge story told through the eyes of a woman is not often seen in contemporary oaters. And that flavor is present in “Brimstone.”

Guy Pearce plays a terrifying reverend in the period drama-thriller, Brimstone. Here's our review of a brutal movie...
An apocalyptic pall hangs over this western from Dutch writer-director Martin Koolhoven, from its ominous title to its spectacular yet bleak landscapes. Some movies have a tendency to romanticise what life was like on the American frontier; Brimstone, on the other hand, is so witheringly violent that it makes Bone Tomahawk look like Paint Your Wagon.

In the prolonged lull between Game of Thrones seasons 6 and 7, series stalwart Kit Harington has lined his slate with a host of intriguing roles. The first of which is Martin Koolhoven’s Western thriller Brimstone, where he’ll be rubbing shoulders with Guy Pearce, Dakota Fanning and fellow Westeros alum Carice van Houten.
Look further down the pipeline and you’ll find a foray into the video game space where, come November, Harington will be headlining Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare as the lead villain. A mix of performance capture and voice work was required for the role, and it means that the actor will be joining a very exclusive Call of Duty club that already boasts the likes of Kevin Spacey, Jeff Goldblum, Ron Perlman and Heather Graham.

Nolan’s Second World War epic is one of a number of large-scale productions to utilise the territory; TV could be next.

The Warner Bros. production was based at the harbour of Urk, a small fishing village, and made extensive use of huge freshwater lake (the largest in Western Europe), The IJsselmeer.
