In 1991, director Alek Keshishian came out with one of the most acclaimed and successful music-themed documentaries of all time, Madonna: Truth or Dare. More than three decades later, he explores the experience of another pop star and actress in his Apple TV+ documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me.
The director sees significant differences between Madonna and the young woman at the heart of his new film.
“Madonna was a really armored person. She almost enjoyed that sparring [with paparazzi], and Selena is a much more vulnerable human being, immediately,” Keshishian said during an appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted virtual event. “I’m not saying Madonna isn’t vulnerable as well, but Madonna was in her 30s when she did Truth or Dare… What I noticed about [Selena], which was different to most pop stars and celebrities that I met, was she didn’t seem to have any guile. She had no armor.

Fair warning to certain right-wing politicians. Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted virtual event, which kicks off its 2023 edition Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. Pt, will feature the appearance of … (dramatic pause) … drag queens. Miss Isabelle Brooks and Luxx Noir London are among the RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants joining us to talk about Season 15 of the MTV unscripted series. Not only that, but Grammy-winning recording artist Lizzo – an ally of the LGBTQ+ community who boldly invited several RuPaul’s Drag Race all-stars onto the stage at her recent Nashville concert — is also coming by to spill the tea on her HBO Max film Love, Lizzo, which documents her Cuz I Love You world tour.

Louis Armstrong, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Selena Gomez, Sinead O’Connor and Tanya Tucker are the subjects of six separate 2022 music documentaries. But if you ask the directors behind each project whether or not they made a music doc, the answer is resounding no.
Instead, the music created by each legendary artist is used to draw viewers into a deeper story that goes beyond song.
Sacha Jenkins’ “Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues” is a prime example. While Jenkins delves into the life and art of the legendary jazz performer, the director also explores America and race by examining the misconception that the New Orleans trumpeter didn’t do enough to support the civil-rights movement.
“The film is much more than a music doc,” says Jenkins. “Music is a great portal into larger conversations because music is always a reflection of and a reaction to the environment, particularly with Black artists in America.

Brittany Murphy was coming apart at the seams in 2006, three years before her sudden death, according to her “Love and Other Disasters” director Alek Keshishian.
Keshishian, who recently helmed documentary “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me,” revealed that Murphy was “troubled” during the production of the rom-com film co-starring Matthew Rhys and Catherine Tate.
“Brittany was an amazing light,” Keshishian told The Independent. “But she had a lot of demons. I was protective of her.”
Keshishian continued, “I was making it in the city I loved, with an amazing crew and an amazing producer, but it was troubled, because I had a troubled actress in the lead.”
He added, “I considered shutting down the movie, but that would have put 70 crew members out of work. So we carried on…I think that affected me.”

In 1991, an often wincingly candid documentary about Madonna supposedly invented a genre. Truth or Dare, which was released in the UK as the decidedly more salacious In Bed with Madonna, is often described as the blueprint for the dozens of pop star docs that followed, from One Direction: This Is Us to Taylor Swift’s Miss Americana. But that’s false. For the most part, it stands alone. It’s the only pop star-approved pop star documentary that could justifiably send its subject’s publicists into a cold sweat. After all, none of Truth or Dare’s many imitators captured their stars fellating bottles of mineral water. Or being bitchy about Oprah. Or, as if they’re in a Mike Leigh tragicomedy, gently telling a long-forgotten childhood friend that, no, they won’t be godparent to their unborn baby.

Selena Gomez has been candid about her struggle with mental health issues, including her 2018 bipolar diagnosis. With Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me, she and director Alek Keshishian wanted to create a public account of her long battle to recover her mental wellbeing.
Speaking at Deadline’s Contenders Documentary panel for the Apple Original Films pic, Keshishian revealed why Gomez trusted him to tell such a personal story.

“I met Selena in 2015 because she told her manager, who happened to be my sister, that she was obsessed with [Keshishian’s 1991 Madonna docu] Truth or Dare,” he said. “She had watched it seven times while she was in Hawaii, and she said she found it so authentic and so inspiring and real. So we met, and that’s how the first connection happened.”
Together they created a deeply personal and revealing film, with Gomez openly discussing her stay in mental health facilities.

Netflix, which has long been the dominant name in streaming, grabbed the No. 1 spot on this week’s Whip Media movie ranker, thanks to “Enola Holmes 2” pulling in the most U.S. viewers last weekend, according to Whip Media viewer data, which is based on more than 23 million global registered users of the TV Time app, which allows fans to track their favorite TV shows and movies.
The sequel to 2020’s “Enola Holmes” was one of the most anticipated flicks of November, and fans clearly jumped at their opportunity to watch it, following its release last week. In the new movie, Millie Bobby Brown of “Stranger Things” fame reprises her role as Enola Holmes, who is now taking on her first case as a detective. Prior to the advent of streaming, documentaries had a reputation for being, as Jerry Seinfeld put it at the 2007 Oscars, “incredibly depressing.”
Politics, the environment, warfare, and the farming industry were all topics routinely explored by documentary filmmakers for several decades. But Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Apple, and Disney have effectively altered the nonfiction landscape by seeking out documentaries that have mass appeal, which has in turn helped them build their respective audiences. Netflix has a knack for determining what will appeal to viewers. “Tiger King,” “The Last Dance” and “The Tinder Swindler” were all released on the streaming service.
Given the ongoing worldwide pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, America’s school shooting crisis, the yearly uptick in extreme weather events, it’s not exactly a surprise that viewers are attracted to nonfiction content that isn’t didactic. It makes sense that factual features and series about celebrities, sports, and music are all the rage.

Apple TV+'s "Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me" is all about getting viewers to reconsider how they think about mental health. The new documentary follows the child star's journey through her bipolar diagnosis, showing what it looks like to live with the condition. The film's structure and tone match what it's like living with depression, an experience film director Alek Keshishian shares with his subject. "You have your up days, you have your dark days, you have moments of revelation, and then you have moments where all seems to collapse," Keshishian tells Popsugar. "It was a very difficult story to tell because I had 200 hours of film. So there were really, probably, 6,000 different movies I could have made from that. And, for me, my task was to be able to show the larger journey, but even within it, to be very careful: you couldn't go too dark and stay...

Alek Keshishian is no stranger to the musician bio-doc format, having practically pioneered the genre with Madonna’s Truth or Dare, a look at the singer’s personal and professional life during her 1990 Blond Ambition tour. Three decades later he is back with Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, which chronicles the mental health journey of Gomez while also looking at the state of celebrity in the social-media-and-soundbite age.

Multi-hyphenate Selena Gomez’s candid documentary, “My Mind & Me,” is now available to viewers in the U.S. on Apple TV+. Directed by Alek Keshishian, the 95-minute film follows Gomez’s journey to stardom, as well as the mental and physical health struggles that have come with being in the spotlight from a young age.
Gomez’s early career was marked by recurring performances on “Barney & Friends” in the early 2000s, minor gigs on Disney Channel original shows and ultimately a lead role on “Wizards of Waverly Place” as Alex Russo. But the ex-Disney star’s reality was far from the perpetual happy endings she portrayed; the documentary provides a jarringly intimate snapshot at how Gomez’s path to fame coupled with personal trauma enacted severe consequences on her mental health.

Filmmaker Alek Keshishian went through over 200 hours of Verite footage and more hours for AppleTV+ “Selena: My Mind and Me.” Through it, the director who helmed “Madonna: Truth or Dare” had unprecedented access to singer and superstar Selena Gomez.
What began as a behind-the-scenes of Gomez on her first tour in 2016,\ evolved into something much bigger. Keshishian would end up following the singer on a journey for over six years as she navigated heartbreak, fame, depression and anxiety.
Here, he talks about following Gomez on that journey and capturing those moments, but also, knowing when “enough was enough.”
It’s been a while since you’ve done a music documentary — what made you say yes to this, and were you in any way hesitant?
It’s been written that I said no to doing another music doc after “Madonna: Truth or Dare,” for a variety of reasons. But, I said,...

Selena Gomez is trying to kill them with kindness while still staying true to herself.
The Emmy and Grammy nominee shared a raw reaction to an uncomfortable 2019 interview while promoting her single “Lose You to Love Me” in Europe. In a scene from Alek Keshishian’s Apple TV+ documentary “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me,” the “Only Murders in the Building” actress and producer calls out a video correspondent for making her “feel like a product” on air.
“Can I sit, please? Fucking dumbest thing ever. I’m done. I can’t do that anymore,” Gomez said after finishing the interview with an unnamed reporter (via Entertainment Weekly). “Do you know how cheap it makes me feel? She’s asking me questions, like, good ones, and then she didn’t even pay attention to what I was saying. I don’t want to do that ever again.”

Selena Gomez is a survivor. That’s clear from the candid, bracing conversation in her Rolling Stone cover story, where she reflects on harrowing moments in her ongoing health battles, both mental and physical. But her experiences have made her passionate about using her platform to advocate for others. In her interview with writer Alex Morris, she revealed her complicated feelings about being the “face” of a cause, strategies for defusing manufactured drama, and how her new documentary My Mind and Me almost never saw the light of day.

After the enormous success of director Alek Keshishian’s Madonna feature documentary “Truth or Dare,” it seems obvious that the two would have reunited for a sequel.
“I don’t think that’s in the cards,” Keshishian told me Wednesday night at the AFI Fest world premiere of his new doc, “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me.” “She asked me to do ‘Truth or Dare 2’ 15 years ago but we just didn’t see eye to eye about what it should be.”
The first film, released in 1991, chronicled Madonna and her dancers during her 1990 Blond Ambition world tour.
“It was just difficult,” Keshishian said of coming up with a second film. “She had real kids. I was like, ‘What’s interesting is your relationship with your kids, but if I shoot that, it’s exploitative and if I don’t, what’s the film?’”
However, Keshishian did hint that there was plenty...

Just as it might be said that every anti-war film is unavoidably still a call to arms, every documentary that promises an unvarnished look into the private life of a mega-famous pop star is unavoidably still a mouthpiece for its subject’s personal brand. And yet, a small handful of them are sincere and curious enough to also become something more at the same time. “Miss Americana” leveraged Taylor Swift’s celebrity into an arena-sized portrait of self-doubt in the digital age, while “The World’s a Little Blurry” swirled Billie Eilish’s meteoric stardom into a richly perceptive coming-of-age epic. Both of those movies were raw and revealing in a way that allowed them to feel unfiltered, even if the goal of commissioning them was to reclaim the narrative for their respective subjects.

The Apple TV+ film — whose world premiere served as opening night of Los Angeles’ AFI Fest — follows six years of Gomez’s life, spanning from the 2016 cancellation of her Revival tour (due to anxiety and depression) to her lupus and mental health struggles. Using six years’ worth of footage, In Bed With Madonna director Alek Keshishian has charted the former Disney child star’s troubled but successful pop reinvention, her remarkable empathy and love-hate relationship with fame
Selena Gomez is backstage in her dressing room in floods of tears. It’s 2016, and she is rehearsing her Revival tour. Things are not going well: “It sucks. It looks so bad. I have no idea what the fuck I’m doing,” Gomez cries. The faces of her inner circle register panic.
To the outside world Gomez is projecting the image of a young woman coming into her own as a confident grownup pop singer – leaving behind her Disney child star persona. Behind the scenes, she is falling apart: self-critical and overly concerned about what others think. Does she look old enough? Sexy enough? Studying the monitor, she says her body is too young, “like a 12-year-old boy”.

In the first lines of the documentary “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me,” the singer-actress-mogul-philanthropist–former Disney star promises the audience, “I’ll only tell you my darkest secrets.” It’s a big promise for what’s to come in this raw, intimate portrait, directed by Alek Keshishian, known for the groundbreaking behind-the-scenes documentary “Madonna: Truth or Dare.”
But at the end of “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me,” one can’t help but feel that the dark secrets Gomez has shared, while indeed revealing, have been carefully selected and curated, presented in a manner that is highly stylized and studiously “authentic.” It’s not a warts-and-all confessional, like the YouTube documentaries released by fellow Disney refugee popster Demi Lovato, but something more like a deep conversation with a new friend, one that is open and vulnerable but with some things left unsaid or glossed-over in an effort to steer the conversation toward a specific goal.

Among the things that become apparent over the course of “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me,” one is that she comes off as lovable as you’ve imagined she is from her persona in music, television, films and philanthropic efforts. Something that comes to light right on the heels of that non-revelation is that your affection for her isn’t going to make her one bit less anxious or depressed, at least when she’s in the throes of the bipolar condition that director Alek Keshishian largely focuses on.

Before Selena Gomez released Rare in 2020, the singer maintained a relatively low profile. She barely did interviews and briefly deactivated her social media accounts. The album — a candy-sweet assemblage of anthemic, electro-pop self-love hits — marked a shift in the star’s relationship to the public. Gomez would no longer be haunted by her Disney past or her tumultuous relationships. She would be honest about her struggles with the autoimmune disease lupus, self-worth, depression and anxiety. She was taking control, reshaping her image on her terms.
It’s unsurprising, then, that after the album came a documentary. Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me is a companion piece to Rare, the next step in the star’s search for authentic self-expression. The documentary, which opens this year’s AFI Film Festival on Wednesday, Nov. 2, observes Gomez from an intimate vantage point, watching her negotiate health struggles...
