★★★☆☆ "In a blink my virginity disappeared just like my mother." Delivered with raw teenage cynicism by rising star Shailene Woodley's Kat, this line of voiceover perfectly encapsulates the primary dynamics of Gregg Araki's White Bird in a Blizzard (2014). An adaptation of Laura Kasischke's novel of the same name, the film almost disregards the mystery at the narrative's centre in favour of exploring the intertwined sexuality of Kat and her mother, Eve (Eva Green), who walks out on husband (Christopher Meloni) and daughter at the film's opening. The setup is summed up in eloquently economical prose by the protagonist. "Just when I was becoming nothing but my body, she stepped out of hers and left it behind."...

Title: White Bird in a Blizzard Director: Gregg Araki Starring: Shailene Woodley, Eva Green, Christopher Meloni, Shiloh Fernandez, Thomas Jane, Gabourey Sidibe, Mark Indelicato and Angela Bassett Striving to leave your mark on the world and be appreciated for who you truly are as you mature into the person you want to be can be a gratifying, if not equally terrifying, experience for many people. But director Gregg Araki perfectly relayed that coming-of-age and personal discovery process in his new film adaptation, ‘White Bird in a Blizzard.’ The crime thriller, which is is based on the 1999 novel of the same name by Laura Kasischke, powerfully chronicles a teen who’s [ Read More ]

White Bird in a Blizzard
Written & Directed by Gregg Araki
USA, 2014
Just in case the title wasn’t enough of a hint, White Bird in a Blizzard provides enough ponderous dialogue and artsy flourishes to reveal itself as the pretentious mess that it is. Unsure whether it’s an indie mind-screw or a conventional potboiler, Blizzard splits the difference, interspersing clumsy dream sequences with a laughably-predictable mystery plot. This film actually seems determined to squash any chance for dramatic tension. On that count, at least, it succeeds wildly.
Shailene Woodley continues her reign of terror with a third lackluster offering in 2014. In contrast to Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars, she gets to play a bad girl in White Bird in a Blizzard, though the results are similarly mediocre. Things start with a 17 year-old Kat Connor (Woodley) recalling the day her unstable mother, Eve (Eva Green), disappeared without a trace.

Last year, RADiUS scored at the box office and in Awards Season with its documentary 20 Feet From Stardom (nearly $4.95 million and Best Documentary Feature Oscar win). This year, it may have another non-fiction awards behemoth, hitting theaters this weekend.
Citizenfour, directed by journalist and filmmaker Laura Poitras, tells the story of Nsa leaker Edward Snowden as he disclosed massive domestic U.S. government spying. The film unfolds in real time as Poitras and Guardian colleague Glenn Greenwald, working on a long-term project about government surveillance, were contacted online by a mysterious source calling himself “Citizenfour.” The film, completed in secret while Poitras was in self-imposed virtual exile, alleges even more Nsa overreaching at home and abroad than just what came out of the massive pile of U.S. documents Snowden leaked.

Gregg Araki's latest offering, White Bird In A Blizzard, is set during the time period when Araki first began making films (1988-1991). Because of this, the sets and costumes are rendered with a loving nostalgia that never feels overly novel. It's an aesthetic that melds vintage Araki with the modern cadence of young actors like its star, Shailene Woodley, who was born just barely at the tail end of the narrative's span. It's easy to admire an ambitious letdown like “White Bird in a Blizzard,” but much harder to be moved by it. A melodrama about numbness and detachment, writer-director Gregg Araki's (“Mysterious Skin”) adaptation of Laura Kasischke's novel is a paradox on paper and an anesthetized dud on screen. The film's missteps feel all the more unfortunate given the theoretical potency of its heady, rarely explored themes: female adolescent sexuality as pleasure and power, the latency of familial abuse and violence, the blinding effects of youthful self-absorption, and the way epiphanies can bloom like weeds, gradually choking everything else around them.

Based on Laura Kasischke’s novel of the same title, “White Bird” centers on teen Kat (Shailene Woodley), living a life of angst and parental disappointment in late 1980s suburbia. When her unpredictable mother (Eva Green, giving off a major Bette Davis vibe) seemingly vanishes into thin air one day, and her doormat father (Christopher Meloni) is sent into a tailspin of despondency, Kat holds it together as best she can. She begins an affair with the middle-aged, macho detective assigned to her mother’s case, while halfheartedly attempting to stay in a relationship with her dopey boyfriend (Shiloh Fernandez), who seems to have lost sexual interest in her anyway. Because of the film’s enigmatic plot premise, Araki gets to go creepy (working with Dp Sandra Valde-Hansen), with scenes that submerge into Kat’s dream life, where she wanders in a white-out blizzard while catching glimpses of her mother,...

A new clip from Gregg Araki‘s “White Bird in a Blizzard” has debuted, giving us an insight into the mother-daughter duo played by stars Eva Green and Shailene Woodley. Based on the 1999 novel by Laura Kasischke, “White Bird in a Blizzard” stars Woodley as a college-bound suburban California (as opposed to Ohio in the book) girl named Kat Connor, whose mother, Eve (Eva Green), suddenly abandons their family. The full lineup for this year's BFI London Film Festival was announced this morning (September 3), and as ever comprised an impressive cross-section of the biggest hits from Sundance, Cannes and Venice, spread across the festival's main competition entries and themed strands.
Digital Spy runs down 14 of the movies you need to catch if you're in the Big Smoke for this year's festival.
1. The Imitation Game
Following strong reviews at its Telluride world premiere last weekend, this intelligently crafted biopic of pioneering codebreaker Alan Turing is one of the year's first surefire Oscar frontrunners, with Benedict Cumberbatch's lead performance singled out for particular praise.
Cumberbatch stars as the brilliant but socially awkward Turing, whose groundbreaking work in computer science and cryptanalysis proved crucial during World War II, before his homosexuality led to his prosecution and apparent suicide in the 1950s. Keira Knightley, Mark Strong and Matthew Goode co-star, with Morten Tyldum (Headhunters) directing.

Before premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, we saw an otherworldly teaser for White Bird in a Blizzard, the drama starring Shailene Woodley (Divergent, The Fault in Our Stars), directed by Gregg Araki (Smiley Face). Now the film is poised for release this fall, and the first full trailer has arrived, and it paints a much more conventional picture. Woodley plays Kat Connors, a teenage girl who feels relief from her repressed adolescence when her beautiful homemaking mother (Eva Green) suddenly disappears. But that feeling doesn't last long as she realizes just how much she needed her mother to keep order in her life. Here's the first full trailer for Gregg Araki's White Bird in a Blizzard, originally from Apple: And here's a different international trailer for the Sundance selected film from YouTube: White Bird in a Blizzard is written and directed by Gregg Araki (Smiley Face, Kaboom). "People are either fans or not. And I think that there is something so special about him listening to his own voice and not the voices around him. God, I'm his biggest fan, and I wanted to do a movie with him since I saw 'Mysterious Skin,' which I thought was so beautiful and eerie and creepy," Shailene Woodley told Huffington Post earlier this year about taking on Gregg Araki's "White Bird In A Blizzard." And after a buzzy Sundance Film Festival premiere in January, the movie is now headed to theatres and a new international trailer has arrived. Co-starring Eva Green, Christopher Meloni, Gabourey Sidibe and Shiloh Fernandez, and based on the book by Laura Kasischke, the movie follows a seventeen year-old girl who along with her family goes into a downward spiral of sex and other unseemly activities when her mother suddenly disappears without a trace.

I'm generally a fan of director Gregg Araki's brand of neon-kitsch provocation, but his new film "White Bird in a Blizzard" disappointed me at Sundance. Based on Laura Kasischke's coming-of-age novel and starring ubiquitous ingenue Shailene Woodley as a high-schooler discovering her sexuality while being haunted by her femme fatale mother, it's material that provides ample scope for Araki's signature erotic fixations and camp detailing, but winds up feeling like his tamest effort to date. Not to blame at all is the young actress, gamely disrobing and delivering an affecting turn amid the heightened chaos; even better is Eva Green, bizarrely cast as Woodley's mother but making the most of every lascivious line she gets. Sadly, you don't get to see any of Green in this recently-released clip montage for the film, but you do get to see a lot of Woodley at her most extroverted, tearing up...

Watch a clip from her upcoming film, White Bird In A Blizzard.
Kat Connors is 17 years old when her perfect homemaker mother, Eve, a beautiful, enigmatic, and haunted woman, disappears – just as Kat is discovering and relishing her newfound sexuality. Having lived for so long in a stifled, emotionally repressed household, she barely registers her mother’s absence and certainly doesn’t blame her doormat of a father, Brock, for the loss. In fact, it’s almost a relief. But as time passes, Kat begins to come to grips with how deeply Eve’s disappearance has affected her. Returning home on a break from college, she finds herself confronted with the truth about her mother’s departure, and her own denial about the events surrounding it.

In the year since Shailene Woodley was last at Sundance with "The Spectacular Now," a lot has changed for the actress. Then a Spirit Award-winner for her breakout performance in "The Descendants," Woodley came to Park City last year with a lot of pressure on her to impress with her anticipated follow-up project. She did and swiftly got cast as the lead in pair of big-screen adaptations of popular young adult novels -- "Divergent" and "The Fault in Our Stars." This year, she showed up to Sundance with Gregg Araki's sexually charged teen film "White Bird in a Blizzard," based on the novel by Laura Kasischke. In the film, Woodley plays Kat, a college-bound teenager whose mother (a hammy and delicious Eva Green) mysteriously vanishes. Was she murdered? Did she run away? Shailene Woodley is electric in Gregg Araki’s compelling pot boiler of teenager Kat (Woodley) whose mother vanishes off the face of the earth. Told via voiceover, flashback and through Kat’s sessions with her therapist (Angela Bassett) this could be Araki’s most narratively driven movie to date, with a mystery at its centre. Based on Laura Kasischke’s novel, White Bird In A Blizzard still carries many of Araki’s signature themes – burgeoning sexuality, outsider teens, and a brave central performance from an up-and-comer. It’s a very female...

Gregg Araki is no stranger to The Sundance Film Festival. "100 times," he laughed when asked how many times he's come to Park City. "I was emailing with Rick Linklater before I came and he’s totally the all-time king. He’s gotta be in the teens. I think this is my eighth film in the festival?" "White Bird in a Blizzard" -- which premiered at Sundance Monday night -- is actually Araki's ninth film at the festival following "Kaboom" (2011), "Smiley Face" (2007), "Mysterious Skin" (2005), "Splendor" (1999), "Nowhere" (1997), "The Doom Generation" (1995), "Totally F***ed Up" (1994), and "The Living End" (1992). And it falls comfortably into that list. Sexy and hilarious and brutal and haunting all at once, "White Bird" is based on Laura Kasischke's book of the same name. Set in the late 1980s, it follows teenage Kat (Shailene Woodley, continuing to never fail) as she comes of age amidst the disappearance of...

Gregg Araki's last film was a sci-fi sex romp. Now, he sends The Descendants' Shailene Woodley into thriller territory – but can't resist dwelling on the sexual side of the plot
The fallout from Ka-boom, Gregg Araki's bumptious sex sci-fi of 2010, is a colourful, but turgid coming-of-age story masquerading as a thriller.
The Descendants' Shailene Woodley plays Kat Connor, a teenage suburbanite whose mum (Eva Green) goes missing after months of steadily sliding into a boozy depression. Mum was bored with keeping house for her stick-in-the-mud husband (Christopher Meloni), so the police have been called, but it may not have been necessary. Momma Connor may have just have upped and decided to treat herself to a new life.

Park City - Sex, death, neon lights, more sex, body-image statements undercut by the number of perfect torsos on display, new-wave pop, more sex... it looks an awful lot like we're in a Gregg Araki movie. And so we are, though for all those trash-ulous trademarks, "White Bird in a Blizzard" feels less like one than most. A campily erotic coming-of-age murder-mystery tale -- a pretty conventional genre for Araki, the man behind "Mysterious Skin," "Kaboom" and a host of 90s queer curiosities -- this adaptation of Laura Kasischke's allegedly more stable novel promises some exciting variations to the enfant terrible's freaky...

With the Sundance Film Festival right around the corner we are going to start seeing some stuff for independent films. Most of the time all we have are a synopsis and a couple of photos to go off, but in the case of White Bird In A Blizzard, we actually have a trailer. We'll be posting more and more stuff from Sundance over the next couple of weeks, as we will be there to cover the events and films.
This film is based on the novel by Laura Kasischke, and it tells the story of a young woman (Shailene Woodley) whose life is turned upside-down when her beautiful, enigmatic mother (Eva Green) suddenly goes missing. It looks like a very surreal mystery drama.
The movie also stars Shiloh Fernandez, Christopher Meloni, Gabourey Sidibe, Thomas Jane, and Angela Basset. The film premieres on January 20th at Sundance Film Festival 2014.

Sadly, the Sundance selected coming-of-age drama The Spectacular Now hasn't been getting tons of acclaim on the awards circuit, but the film is worth your time, especially because of the amazing performances from Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley. The latter star will be seen next spring in the adaptation of Divergent, but before that, we'll see her at Sundance again with White Bird in a Blizzard, based on the novel of the same name by Laura Kaischke. The story follows a teenager's life as her mother (Eva Green) suddenly disappears, and there's some kind of surreal, dream element to the narrative in this teaser trailer. Here's the teaser for Gregg Araki's White Bird in a Blizzard from Up and Comers (via The Film Stage): White Bird in a Blizzard is written and directed by Gregg Araki (Smiley Face, Kaboom). Shailene Woodley plays a teenager embarking on a rough road when her mom abruptly disappears in the first trailer for “White Bird in a Blizzard.” Eva Green plays Woodley’s withdrawn mother, while Thomas Jane, Angela Bassett, Christopher Meloni, Gabourey Sidibe and Shiloh Fernandez co-star in writer-director Gregg Araki’s adaptation of Laura Kasischke’s novel of the same name. See photos: Independent Spirit Awards 2014: The Nominees While Woodley’s character is at first unaffected by her mother’s absence, strange dreams of her mother crying out for help eventually make her realize something violent and evil has occurred.

Who is left to guide you if your parents disappear? That seems to be the central question of the latest from Gregg Araki, "White Bird In A Blizzard," with the first teaser trailer arriving and promising a slightly more surreal take on the traditional coming-of-age story. Rounding up an intriguing cast including Shailene Woodley, Eva Green, Christopher Meloni, Shiloh Fernandez, Gabourey Sidibe and Thomas Jane, this one is rolling into the Sundance Film Festival next month, certainly with a bit of shine on it thanks to this spot. But as always the distance between marketing and the actual film can vary, so we'll see how it shapes up. Here's the official synopsis: Based on the acclaimed novel by Laura Kasischke, White Bird in a Blizzard tells the story of Kat Connors, a young woman whose life is turned upside down by the sudden disappearance of her beautiful, enigmatic mother. The line-up of films premiering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival has been released, and there are a lot of good movies, one of which includes The Raid 2, which I am incredibly excited to see! It's easily my most anticipated film at the festival.
The Sundance Film Festival takes place from January 16th to the 26th in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah. From the press release:
John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “The Premieres and Documentary Premieres sections of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival feature new work from many established independent filmmakers who began their careers at our Festival years ago, which allows us to reflect on the impact, legacy and growth of the independent film movement over the past 30 years.”
Trevor Groth, Director of Programming for the Sundance Film Festival, said, “In many of the films selected for our 2014 Sundance Film Festival, we see fascinating characters and subjects throughout.

The Sundance Film Festival made their final feature film line-ups with the Premieres category announcements. Sixteen films with huge name talent, returnee filmmakers and plenty of buyer interest/and future all night wheeling, and dealing.
After breaking out in Park City with The Guard, John Michael McDonagh returns (alongside actor Brendan Gleeson) the much anticipated Calvary. Mike Cahill (alongside actress Brit Marling) returns with more sci-fi terrain with, I Origins. Jake Paltrow who managed to sink instead of swim with The Good Night, was again surfaces with Young Ones. And this was unexpected, but Jordan Vogt-Roberts makes it back to back years with Toy’s House (The Kings of Summer) re-teams with Nick Offerman for Nick Offerman: American Ham (which is more concert-comedy film than narrative feature).
Not surprisingly, as predicted in 4 out of the 5, Park City veterans Gregg Araki, Michael Winterbottom, Ira Sachs and Lynn Shelton all return with their latest product,...

The Sundance Film Festival announced the titles selected to screen in its out-of-competition Premieres and Documentary Premieres sections. Last year, the movies that were launched in these categories — which typically highlight filmmakers who’ve appeared at Sundance before — included Before Midnight, Don Jon, and The Way Way Back; this year appears to be just as promising. In Lynn Shelton’s Laggies, a young woman stuck in arrested-development (Keira Knightley) has her life upended by an unexpected marriage proposal. In David Wain’s They Came Together — surely, a naughty pun, yes? — Wet Hot American Summer alums Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd...

It's almost hard to believe but in less than two months all eyes will be on the Sundance Film Festival where an entire year's worth of new indies will be unveiled for everyone to get excited for in 2014. While the lineup has yet to be revealed it's probably a safe bet that Gregg Araki's next effort, "White Bird In A Blizzard" will be there. Once again he brings together a fascinating cast for an unlikely tale. The film, which is based on the book by Laura Kasischke, stars Shailene Woodley, Eva Green, Gabourey Sidibe, Shiloh Fernandez, Christopher Meloni and more and tells the story of a teenage girl and her coming-of-age, during which her mother mysteriously disappears one day. Here's the synopsis from the book: When Katrina Connors' mother walks out on her family, Kat is surprised but not shocked; the whole year she has been "becoming sixteen" -...

I've learned that director Gregg Araki (Kaboom, Mysterious Skin) is currently in post-production on his film adaptation of Laura Kasischke's novel White Bird In A Blizzard, a film that Gabourey Sidibe and Angela Bassett are cast members of - interestingly, because both actresses also will be appearing together in the upcoming season of American Horror Story. The film, which was shot last year, also features the acting talents of Shailene Woodley, Eva Green, Shiloh Fernandez, and Christopher Meloni. The indie drama, described as a psychological thriller, inspired by true events, tells the story of a troubled...

White Bird In A Blizzard, anyone out there familiar with this movie? Directed by Gregg Araki, and based on Laura Kasischke‘s novel of the same name, the upcoming thriller stars Shailene Woodley as a troubled young woman whose life changes following the strange disappearance of her mother. Definitely sounds interesting, especially when we add that Woodley’s on-screen mom is Eva Green, right? Co-produced, written and directed by Araki, the movie revolves around Woodley’s character, a 16-year-old Katrina who is preoccupied with sex and dating and eager to separate from parents she sees as terminally boring. But everything will change when her mother vanishes, and Kat...

It’s described as follows: ”In A Perfect World revolves around, newly-married, former flight attendant Jiselle, who is surviving life as a new stepmother to three children. Their lives are altered forever when a deadly flu epidemic breaks out.”

Let's face it... we live in a far from perfect world, but thankfully there are a handful of quality filmmakers out there who make movies that get us through the rough patches in the most memorable, gruesome, and fun ways. Alexandre Aja fits that description perfectly.
