AMC Networks is laying off nearly 100 workers as part of a company-wide reorganization, TheWrap has learned.
CEO Josh Sapan announced the cuts, which will affect 10% of AMC Networks’ U.S. staffers, during an employee town hall Wednesday. Sapan said the restructuring is meant to streamline linear network operations with streaming, one of AMC Networks’ areas with the greatest potential for growth at this time.
The layoffs will affect several departments across the company — not including the Los Angeles-based programming team — with cut staffers set to exit by the end of the year. Details about the new company structure were not provided.
AMC’s national networks include AMC, We tv, BBC America, IFC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios. Its subscriber-video-on-demand services include AMC+, Acorn TV, Shudder, Sundance Now and Umc.
When AMC Networks released its third-quarter earnings results earlier this month, Sapan put a strong focus on streaming, saying in a statement,...

Exclusive: AMC Networks is letting go 10% of its U.S. workforce, eliminating nearly 100 positions in a reorganization designed to streamline the company’s linear and streaming operations.
CEO Josh Sapan announced the cuts during a virtual town hall meeting earlier today, company insiders tell Deadline. He said a months-long strategic evaluation of the company had focused on an overhaul of its structure to emphasize areas with the greatest growth potential as streaming becomes more central to the entire industry. Similar to the view of other media leaders confronting the march of technology, Sapan said a central objective for 2021 and beyond will be to change how the company operates. Acquiring streaming customers, for example, is a different organizational process than driving higher affiliate fees.
Other media companies, including WarnerMedia and NBCUniversal, have recently shed jobs in restructuring efforts, and ViacomCBS and Disney have similarly streamlined as a result of major mergers.

Marc Juris, president and general manager of We tv, is stepping down at the end of the year, parent company AMC Networks announced Wednesday.
Juris’ exit comes after a seven-year tenure leading the network, a period that saw the launch of several important We tv franchises including “Marriage Boot Camp” and “Love After Lockup,” the latter of which recently had its highest-rated premiere in series history.
AMC Networks has not yet named a replacement for Juris.
“My years at AMC Networks have been among the most rewarding and fulfilling of my entire career. This is a company that has always had an outsized impact by taking chances and having the confidence to make big moves and that has become part of my professional DNA,” Juris said in a statement. “I’m thankful for our talented team and very proud of the shows we’ve made and the relationships we have forged with viewers.

Marc Juris is stepping down as President and General Manager of We tv. He will leave the AMC network at the end of the year after seven years in the job. There is no immediate replacement.
“We first worked with Marc many years ago, when he was running original programming for an early version of AMC and then became the general manager who took the network from ad-free to ad-supported, a move that fueled much of the growth and distinction that was to follow,” said Josh Sapan, president and chief executive officer of AMC Networks. “His keen eye for brands and for compelling content have been demonstrated here and elsewhere. He’s recognized as a leader in our industry and for good reason. We wish him nothing but the best as he departs to find his next opportunity.”

The week of March 9 — when the coronavirus was officially declared a pandemic, and Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson shared the news that they had tested positive for Covid-19 — a cascade of television shows and movies shut their productions down for safety reasons. From “Stranger Things” to “The Batman,” these shutterings are temporary, and sets will be up and running as soon as it’s safe to go back into production — though no one knows when that might be. All told, the pipeline for scripted television and movies for later this year and into 2021 has been decimated. The broadcast networks, unable to shoot any pilots for the 2020-21 TV season, are in uncharted territory. And unless the coronavirus curve flattens soon, the broadcasters, which schedule hours and hours of reality television in the summer, will have to rely almost entirely on repeats.

During this time of state-mandated social distancing due to the spread of coronavirus, the ex-convicts from We TV’s hit reality show “Life After Lockup” are offering advice from their very specialized field of expertise: How to keep yourself occupied while staying inside.

We TV has renewed its viral hit “Love After Lockup” for a third season and spinoff “Love After Lockup: Life After Lockup” for a second season, Variety has learned exclusively.
“Love After Lockup” — a reality show about couples who’ve met through prison dating websites trying to make it after the prisoner has been released — premiered in early 2018, with little marketing behind it. But its ratings grew every week, propelling it to be the fastest-growing new reality show on cable last year. The unconventional idea for the show had come out of We TV’s 2016 “pitchfest,” an annual companywide event, during which all We staffers divide into teams to brainstorm ideas.
Its word-of-mouth success then inspired the summer 2019 spinoff “Life After Lockup,” which follows couples from the cast who are still together, or otherwise still connected (sometimes the connections are a bit toxic). “Life After Lockup’s” first season aired...

We tv has announced a 10-episode extension for Season 2 of Love After Lockup, raising the number of episodes to 24. The additional episodes, introducing new couples making the transition to “love on the outside” will air this spring.

According to We tv, Love After Lockup was the fastest-growing new cable reality series for 2018 and has continued the trajectory in season two. Seven episodes into the second season, the show delivered a series high of more than 1.3 million total viewers in Live+3, double the season premiere viewership and a series high 762,000 adults 25-54, up 88% percent from the season premiere.

As they gear up for battle in an even more competitive field, mid-sized companies such as AMC Networks and Viacom are consolidating their management structures. The initial goal is strategic: Take advantage of the additional heft and efficiencies that come with a unified infrastructure, rather than having competing interests internally.
At AMC Networks, that means placing AMC, BBC America, SundanceTV and IFC all under the oversight of one executive: Sarah Barnett, who was named to the top role Monday. At Viacom, Chris McCarthy was handed the keys to MTV, VH1, Cmt, and Logo, while Kent Alterman expanded his oversight to Comedy Central, Paramount Network, and TV Land, at the end of October.

AMC Networks has overhauled the management of its entertainment networks, promoting BBC America chief Sarah Barnett to oversee four channels focused on scripted programming: AMC, SundanceTV, BBC America and IFC.
David Madden, who joined AMC and SundanceTV last year from Fox, will take on oversight of programming for the four AMC channels in addition to overseeing the AMC Studios wing. Linda Schupack, longtime head of marketing for AMC, will run marketing for the four networks as president of marketing for entertainment networks.
The move is described as a centralizing of operations at the company that is home to five U.S. cable channels and the growing AMC Studios operations. As part of the melding of previously disparate units, AMC expects to layoff about 40 people as they eliminate overlapping positions. AMC Networks has centralized its operations, promoting Sarah Barnett to president of entertainment networks and upping senior executives David Madden and Linda Schupack.
The restructuring will result in about 40 layoffs, or about 2% of the workforce at the entertainment networks, sources tell Deadline. AMC Networks did not comment on any job losses.
The shift comes less than a month after the announcement that AMC vet Charlie Collier is heading to New Fox, replacing Gary Newman as entertainment chief of the slimmed-down entity.
Barnett, the current president and Gm of BBC America who previously had that role at SundanceTV, will add oversight of AMC, SundanceTV and IFC. We tv has ordered a ten-episode new season of its hit reality series Bridezillas for premiere in 2019. The docuseries about brides gone wild returned earlier this year after a multi-year hiatus on We tv, with double-digit ratings growth over the course of the new season.

We have been thrilled with the glowing reception from longtime fans as well as new fans of the show,” said Marc Juris, president of We tv. “Bridezillas came roaring back with a whole new layer of drama thanks to the ubiquity of social media, making the show more relevant than ever, and we’re excited to see what outrageousness unfolds during this upcoming season.”

When Netflix announced last year that it would revive “Queer Eye,” the hit reality makeover show from a decade ago, the internet responded with a resounding “why?”
“The rights came back,” David Collins, co-creator and executive producer of “Queer Eye” said Tuesday night. The show, he explained, was “available for us to take out again.”
Collins appeared at a panel discussion hosted by Hrts, where he was joined by other unscripted producers and executives — as well as moderator Scott Hervey — to discuss the phenomena of rebooting successful reality franchises.
“The show has always been evergreen,” Collins said. “The format was beloved. It had international appeal. The run that we had originally on Bravo had been wonderful, but the time came when it ended, and there was just enough time to kind of settle it. And quite frankly, the Republican world came to be, and it was time for a new...

This post is in partnership with Cadillac Cadillac and the Producers Guild of America recently launched Make Your Mark, a short film competition that challenges producers to create compelling content with limited resources. Contestants will make a short film over a single weekend in late June, and the 30-second Cadillac spot featuring the grand prize winner’s film will air during the 2015 Academy Awards. Probably the biggest disappointment of The Produced By Conference was the “Courting the Female Audience” panel. Not because of its quality, but because of the fact that it didn’t take place in the biggest theater on the Warner Bros. lot. Since it was in one of the smaller venues, more than a few people must have missed out on what turned out to be an excellent conversation. As women’s roles continue to expand in society, so too are their roles growing on television. More than ever, capturing the female audience is vital to a show’s success, and that was the subject of Sunday’s smart and funny “Courting the Female Audience” panel at the Producers Guild‘s Produced By conference. “Women are looking for nuance,” said Mara Brock-Akil, creator and executive producer of Being Mary Jane and The Game. “We’re not all beautiful and gorgeous.” Women are also, it would appear, looking for zombies, or at least one particular set of them. “The Walking Dead is the No. 1 show for women,” said Marc Juris, We TV president and general manager. Either way, “Female viewers are much more demanding and discerning,” said Matt Warburton, executive producer of Fox’s The Mindy Project. “They care about the quality of a show. For men, fart jokes and an explosion are enough.

Horror heavyweight Eli Roth is best known for spine-tingling flicks like Hostel and Cabin Fever, but he’s dabbled in the world of television before. Last year, Roth executive-produced all 13 episodes of Netflix’s Hemlock Grove, a show that, despite its mixed reception, has been renewed for a second season (due to drop this July). Now, with his long-anticipated The Green Inferno primed to hit theaters in September, Roth is jumping back into the small screen for South of Hell.
Roth will direct the pilot episode of the horror thriller, which is set to premiere on We tv sometime next year. If the network sounds unfamiliar, that’s because We tv is known primarily for reality shows like Bridezillas and Obsessed with the Dress. It will premiere its first scripted series, legal drama The Divide, in July.
