If there's any Marvel Cinematic Universe movie that can stand on its own two legs as a complete story, it's "Captain America: The First Avenger." Well, excluding the prologue and the epilogue, which show the frozen Steve Rogers being discovered in the Arctic and then waking up in modern-day New York City, respectively. The prologue lets you know ahead of time that Cap's sacrifice in the third act won't be fatal, while the ending is pure sequel bait.
"Captain America" is definitely not the most monumental MCU movie, but it's one of the most enjoyable. The MCU clearly takes its cues from the blockbusters of Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige's youth — from "Star Wars" to "Raiders of the Lost Ark." "Captain America" is one of the few that feels like a pulpy, earnest Spielberg adventure movie. It makes sense since director Joe Johnston is budget Spielberg; he directed "Jurassic Park 3...

The American Society of Cinematographers has done the right thing.
The group said today that Oscar-winning filmmaker Spike Lee will receive its Board of Governors Award next month.
“Spike Lee is one of the most brilliant filmmakers of our time, and the social impact of his work is immeasurable,” ASC President Shelly Johnson said. “This award celebrates his respect for the partnership between director and cinematographer and how two people unite to tell a visual story in a way that can only be recognized as that of collaboration.”
The Brooklyn-raised Lee began his storied career in the 1980s as a writer-director of such films as She’s Gotta Have It, School Daze and Do the Right Thing, for which he earned a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination. Many more celebrated films would follow, including Malcolm X, Mo’ Better Blues, Jungle Fever, Crooklyn, Clockers, He Got Game, Summer of Sam, Girl 6,...

By the time she appeared on Gilmore Girls, Mädchen Amick was more than your average guest star. She was a veteran of Twin Peaks and several movies. Amick played Sherry Tinsdale, Christopher (David Sutcliffe)’s fiance. While Christopher was already separated from Lorelai (Lauren Graham) by that point, that didn’t mean she was welcome in Stars Hollow. Amick had a slightly different take, though.

The David Lynch and Mark Frost series Twin Peaks made its premiere on ABC in 1990 and ran for two seasons before being cancelled. It was followed by the feature film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, and a couple decades later the series was revived for a third season on Showtime, called Twin Peaks: The Return. While we anxiously wait to see if Lynch and Frost are going to bring us any more stories set in the world of Twin Peaks, the Spooky Empire convention in Orlando, Florida gathered several of the show’s cast members together for a reunion that stirred up all the feels.
Cast member Mädchen Amick shared a picture to Instagram that shows her enjoying a dinner with fellow cast members Dana Ashbrook, Sherilyn Fenn, Kyle MacLachlan, Sheryl Lee, and Kimmy Robertson.

World War II adventure “Greyhound,” now streaming on Apple TV Plus, takes place on a battleship in the chill of a North Atlantic winter. Tom Hanks wrote the screenplay and stars in the film about a captain whose ship comes under attack by German U-boats as it crosses what is known as the black pit of the ocean — an area not covered by anti-submarine aircraft.
For rerecording mixer Michael Minkler, supervising sound editor Warren Shaw and sound mixer David Wyman, who have been Oscar-nominated for their work on the film, the job was to put the audience in the middle of the action and give the actors a work-friendly environment in which to perform.
In a third-act climactic sequence, the destroyer, code-named Greyhound, comes close to a U-boat and has to make a sharp turn to avoid being hit by torpedoes while defending another ship. The sequence runs five minutes long,...

At six of the last eight Oscars, Best Cinematography has gone hand-in-hand with Best Director: Claudio Miranda and Ang Lee for “Life of Pi” (2013); Emmanuel Lubezki and Alfonso Cuaron for “Gravity” (2014); Lubezki and Alejandro G. Inarritu for both “Birdman” (2015) and “The Revenant” (2016); Linus Sandgren and Damien Chazelle for “La La Land” (2017); and Cuaron doing double duty on “Roma” (2019). Will that trend hold true this year? (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Cinematography.)
The academy usually regards award-winning cinematography as pretty pictures within an epic technical feat of filmmaking. While great lighting and framing are laudable on their own, having a movie that looks like it was difficult to shoot goes a long way to snagging an Oscar. Aaron Schneider welcomed working with Tom Hanks on their new film “Greyhound” as it was “Saving Private Ryan” which inspired his first film as a director. “Tom’s production company has a long history of WWII projects with ‘Band of Brothers’ and ‘The Pacific’ and they defined the state of the art in creating authentic productions.” Schneider was part of Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts panel, conducted virtually by this writer (watch the exclusive video above).

Johnson was part of Gold Derby’s Meet the Btl Experts panel, conducted virtually by this writer (watch the exclusive video above). “I wanted the Sphero 65 because they are old and they are a marvelous pairing with this modern camera. Movie audiences go to see Liam Neeson get revenge the way they once went to see John Wayne ride a horse or Carmen Miranda dance with fruit on her head; the movie itself could be great or mediocre, but there’s that satisfaction of watching a movie star do the exact thing that you want and expect them to do. As “solidly senior Liam Neeson kicks ass” vehicles go, “Honest Thief” falls firmly in the middle, nowhere near the heights of “Taken” but well above the depths of “Taken 3.”
Neeson, as a bank robber trying to turn himself in, is the above-the-title draw here, but “Honest Thief” ultimately belongs to Jai Courtney as a crooked FBI agent who complicates the title character’s confession by attempting to steal the money and kill anyone who gets in his way.

Long in the making sequels have been having a bit of a moment in Hollywood over the last handful of years. Properties long since thought dormant have come back to life, sometimes to great success. Now, Bill & Ted Face the Music hopes to be the latest IP to do so, with this newest effort nearly 30 years after Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (not to mention over three decades since the initial outing in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure). The franchise always leaned on creativity, but that’s in short supply here. This likely conclusion to the misadventures of the title character best friends is fan service and fan service alone, but everyone seems to know that the joke has more than worn thin. Hitting screens today, it’s a huge disappointment. The movie is the second sequel and third installment in the Bill & Ted series. Once upon a time, William “Bill” S.

It’s no secret that Tom Hanks has a strong interest in World War II. Beyond even his personal fascination with the subject, a number of his projects, both in front of the camera and behind it, have shown this to be true. Now, Hanks is back, serving as the star, screenwriter, and producer of Greyhound, a nautical thriller set during the Battle of the Atlantic in WWII. Without ever calling attention to itself, this flick drops you into the war and shows you what it was like to lead a convoy through what, in lesser hands, would be certain death on the high seas. Coming to Apple TV+ after Sony aborted its 2020 theatrical release, it’s another rock solid outing for Hanks. The film is a thriller, taking the shape of a military drama. Taking place in 1942, the early days of the war, we see what the Navy was...

This summer, Tom Hanks is going back to World War II. Not only is he starring in Greyhound, a Navy film set during the war that Hanks is so compelled by, he’s even written the screenplay adaptation. That alone made this one to look forward to in June. Now, we have a Trailer today to dive into (no pun intended). Hanks and company are looking to make a thrilling action epic, in addition to a portrait of a conflicted leader. If he succeeds, we may have an awards player on our hands. You can see the Trailer at the end of the post, as per the usual… The movie is a WWII period piece, mixing action with drama. The simple synopsis, from IMDb, is as follows: “During World War II, a Us Navy skipper must lead an Allied convoy being stalked by Nazi U-boat wolf packs.” Hanks stars as Commander Ernest Krause,...

Dr. Garth Twa chats to Dana Ashbrook about David Lynch, Bobby Briggs and returning to Twin Peaks
Dana Ashbrook played the iconic bad boy, Bobby Briggs, in the original series of Twin Peaks. 25 years later, he returns to play Bobby again, and the former opportunistic delinquent and arch-nemesis of authority has grown up to become, surprisingly, a deputy sheriff in the Twin Peaks police. Mellowed, perhaps, by the decades, and a failed marriage to his—married, at the time—sweetheart Shelly Johnson, he is still devastated by the murder of Laura Palmer.
Garth Twa: It seems that Twin Peaks has been a huge part of your life, is that correct to say?
Dana Ashbrook: You know, it was, it was a huge part of my life when I was about the age of 22 to 24, but I moved away and went on and did other things.

“Riverdale” star Lili Reinhart will portray the younger version of Betty Cooper’s mom Alice, played by Mädchen Amick in the present day, in the upcoming flashback episode in Season 3. The episode, titled “The Midnight Club,” is an homage to the movie “The Breakfast Club” — but Reinhart looked at a different pop culture phenomenon of yore for her look as young Alice.
Amick starred in the original “Twin Peaks” as Shelly Johnson, and the actress said that she researched photos of the 1990 cult hit for inspiration.
“I do my own makeup on the show this season, and I was definitely looking at a lot of “Twin Peaks” photo references to make sure that I got the eyebrows right,” she continued. “The Mac lip pencil Spice I use, she used back in the day,” Reinhart said in a recent interview with Vulture. “So, yeah, I did my research!”

“The Breakfast Club” star Anthony Michael Hall has been cast as Principal Featherhead in the upcoming “Riverdale” flashback episode — which happens to be a darker take on the 1985 teen film.
The episode, titled “The Midnight Club,” will air on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m. on The CW. As showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa explained at this summer’s Television Critics Association press tour, the episode will feature the younger cast members as their parents.
“Cami [Camila Mendes] will be playing a young Hermione (Marisol Nichols), Cole [Sprouse] will be playing a young Fp (Skeet Ulrich), Kj [Apa] will be dying his hair brown and playing a Young Fred Andrews (Luke Perry),” he said. Aguirre-Sacasa also teased that the episode will reveal something that all the parents have been hiding from their children.

Well, if you weren’t excited to see the “Riverdale” crew play younger versions of their parents on an upcoming flashback episode — which is also a dark homage to “The Breakfast Club” — maybe you’ll get a little more hyped up knowing The CW show has brought in a ringer. Like, a dead ringer.
Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa’s son, Michael, has been cast as the teen counterpart to his real-life father’s on-screen persona, Hiram Lodge, in the Season 3 episode, “The Midnight Club,” an individual with knowledge of the casting tells TheWrap. And if you are wondering if the resemblance between the Counsuelos boys is strong enough to warrant the familial casting, well just look at the photo above.

Don’t you forget about this: “Riverdale” is doing a tribute to “The Breakfast Club” this season. Yes, it’s about time.
And what’s more is the upcoming installment of The CW’s dark take on the Archie Comics is going to be a flashback featuring the young cast playing their on-screen parents as teenagers.
“Throughout the years, we’ve talked a little bit about backstory and we’ve been revealing backstory slowly,” creator and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said during the Television Critics Association press tour Monday, while explaining how the idea to throwback the clock to the parents’ time at Riverdale High came about. “And periodically I will get a call phone call from Madchen [Amick who plays Betty Cooper’s (Lili Reinhart) mother, Alice], who’ll say, ‘Ok, I’m playing a scene and I know nothing of the context.’ So we talk about that stuff.”

The 32nd annual American Society of Cinematographers Awards took place on Feb. 17 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland and were emceed by Turner Classic Movies’ Ben Mankiewicz. Over the years, the Asc has predicted 128 of the 160 Oscar nominees (80%), including all five of this year’s contenders: Roger Deakins (“Blade Runner 2049”), Bruno Delbonnel (“Darkest Hour”), Dan Laustsen (“The Shape of Water”), Rachel Morrison (“Mudbound”) and Hoyte van Hoytema (“Dunkirk”). But it has only previewed 13 of the last 31 winners of the Oscar for Best Cinematography; that is a a success rate of just 41%.
Deakins, who is the Oscar frontrunner for Best Cinematography, won for the fourth time from 15 bids with the Asc. His previous wins were for “The Shawkshank Redemption” (1994), “The Man Who Wasn’t There” (2001) and “Skyfall” (2012). The American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) feature film nominees tends to lean toward big-scale movies, and this year is no exception. Their top five include frontrunner Roger Deakins for his stunning visuals in “Blade Runner 2049” as well as Rachel Morrison, who photographed “Mudbound.” Left out were viable but smaller-scale contenders “Call Me By Your Name” and “The Post.”
So far, neither the Asc nor the cinematography branch of the Academy has ever nominated a woman for a feature film. So Morrison’s nomination is a big deal. (Next up for Morrison: Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Black Panther.”) According to a study by the Center for the Study of Women in Television & Film, women made up 5 percent of cinematographers on the top 250 domestic-grossing films in 2016.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers from “Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier,” a new book by Mark Frost, and “Twin Peaks: The Return.”]
To get right to it: For anyone interested enough to click on this article, “Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier” is almost certainly worth reading in full. (And with the holidays coming up, why not put it on your wish list?) Engrossing, efficient, and with just the right amount of personality, Mark Frost’s 145-page novel provides both necessary and superfluous information related to the series — especially “The Return” — all of which can be digested quickly and enjoyably.
Framed as a report from FBI Agent and newly inducted Blue Rose Task Force member Tamara Preston (played by Chrysta Bell in “The Return”) to her boss and FBI Deputy Director Gordon Cole (David Lynch), the book consists mainly of case files. Most cover individuals ranging from Shelly Johnson to Windom Earle, but there are also sections on The Double R Diner, Twin Peaks (the town), and a briefing near the end simply titled “Today.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. The best things come to those who wait, and Big Ed Hurley (Everett McGill) has long been dreaming of the moment that opens Part 15 of Mark Frost and David Lynch's Twin Peaks revival. "I've been a selfish bitch to you all these years," says his one-eyed wife Nadine (Wendy Robie), who's walked a long way—a Dr. Jacoby/Dr. Amp gold, shit-digging shovel slung over her shoulder—to the cash-only Gas Farm that Ed has run for most of his life. She states the obvious: Ed is in love with Rr Diner propietor Norma Jennings (Peggy Lipton), and she, Nadine, has always stood in his way. Those days are finally over. Ed is reluctant to think of this as anything beyond another of his spouse's manic episodes.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series.Much of David Lynch's work is about regression, or regressiveness, about people who are most comfortable when indulging (really, hiding behind) their baser instincts. An acid-jazz saxophonist with murder on his mind might take refuge in the body and soul of a teenage delinquent (Lost Highway), or a midwestern girl who has played and lost the Hollywood game might concoct a candy-colored dream-life in which she finally attains Tinseltown stardom (Mulholland Dr.). But these escapes always prove to be traps, and cyclical ones at that. What goes around comes around. What has happened before will happen again. Even Blue Velvet's Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini), finally liberated from her abusive sexual relationship with Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper), "still can see blue velvet through my tears.

Almost a third of the way through its season, “Twin Peaks” has given a few more clues about where the show is heading, and it doesn’t look good. In fact, we’re afraid that history may repeat itself if Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) doesn’t snap out of his Dougie stupor and get back to solving crimes and eating pie.
Among a cast of 217 people, the show has brought back a number of familiar faces but has also introduced new players, some of whom have already met their untimely ends. In Episode 5, however, two new characters have given cause for concern, mainly because they’re giving off serious deja vu.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. The key image in Part 5 of the revived Twin Peaks is of a woman in ecstasy. Recall, however, the subtitle that series co-creator/director David Lynch appended to his thorny 2006 masterpiece Inland Empire: "A Woman in Trouble." The line separating rapture and anguish is a blurry one, especially for Lynch's ladies, who are as likely to end up exquisitely chiseled corpses (the ubiquitous Laura Palmer; Part 2's doomed henchwoman Darya) as they are world-weary survivors. For the moment, let's focus on Rebecca "Becky" Burnett (Amanda Seyfried), daughter of Rr Diner waitress Shelly Johnson (Mädchen Amick), though Becky's last name—taken from ne'er-do-well husband Steven Burnett (Caleb Landry Jones)—obscures the identity of her father. (Dana Ashbrook's now-law-abiding Bobby Briggs is the most likely candidate,...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Twin Peaks: The Return” episodes as they’re released weekly.]
Even if you recently re-watched the first two seasons of “Twin Peaks” through the magic of streaming, that doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily recognize everyone who’s come back for the Showtime revival.
Part of the problem is that there are a lot of people to keep track of. Though it’s a small town, it’s still a freakin’ town with a heathy population that thrives on that sweet mountain air.
