Peter Garde, European film financing vet and frequent collaborator of filmmakers like Lars Von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, has died aged 67 in Fakse, Denmark, after a long battle with cancer. Garde’s wife, Nanna, confirmed the news to Deadline alongside his close associates, Peter Aalbæk Jensen and Anders Kjærhauge.
Garde began his education in finance in the small town of Store Heddinge in Denmark, where he was a student set to become a banker. He ultimately went on to start his own financial exchange company.
After the success of Lars Von Trier’s Breaking The Waves, Garde was convinced by his close friend producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen to join Zentropa and help manage all the money that was pouring into the studio, which ultimately became the beginning of Garde’s long career with Lars Von Trier and Zentropa Studios’ films. He joined the company in 1997.

For almost a decade, producers Lars Knudsen and Jay Van Hoy helped make some of the biggest film festival sensations, from “The Witch” to “American Honey.” In 2016, though, their production company Parts and Labor hit a wall. “I’m very proud of everything we did,” Knudsen said over Zoom this week, “but we couldn’t really get out of the gate. You get a film into Sundance or Cannes and it just doesn’t do anything. It wasn’t sustainable. There had to be a way to not only make a movie create a career path.”
Knudsen and Van Hoy parted ways in 2016 and began producing independently. When Knudsen was introduced to director Ari Aster and produced his 2018 debut “Hereditary,” it led to a new partnership. “It felt effortless to work together, which is all you want as a producer,’ Knudsen said. Recent movies like Captain Fantastic, Leave No Trace or Cédric Kahn’s Wild Life have shown parents — and, more specifically, fathers — whisking their children away from society into the throes of rustic living, often with hazardous results. But while those films also tried to highlight the occasional warmth, humanity and natural comforts inherent in such questionable life choices, these aspects are rarely on display in Resin (Harpiks), a very dark and Danish entry into the genre that was backed by Lars von Trier’s longtime executive producer, Peter Aalbæk Jensen.

Lars von Trier once had small-screen aspirations for “The House That Jack Built,” but his stab (sorry) at a serial-killing narrative premiered at the Cannes Film Festival Monday night. As promised, the writer-director brought gore to the Croisette; tickets even included a scènes violentes (“explicit violence”) warning. A notable segment of the 2,400-seat Grand Théâtre Lumière audience revolted against what they saw: Variety’s Ramin Setoodeh reported that 100 guests exited in protest, while others on social media estimated half the film-goers departed early:
I’ve never seen anything like this at a film festival. More than 100 people have walked out of Lars von Trier’s ‘The House That Jack Built,’ which depicts the mutilation of women and children. “It’s disgusting,” one woman said on her way out. #Cannes2018 pic.twitter.com/GsBGCoyHEG

Olivia Munn has written a powerful essay for Entertainment Weekly in which she addresses Hollywood’s sexual harassment and abuse problem. Munn was one of six women who came forward to accuse director Brett Ratner of sexual harassment in a story published by The Los Angeles Times in November.
“My experience with Brett Ratner enforced in me the belief that I deserve to be here and that I should be able to reach for my dreams without being harassed and abused, no matter what economic or social position I find myself in,” Munn writes. “How will anyone know you’re worth it if you don’t?”
Munn told The Los Angles Times that Ratner masturbated in front of her in his trailer when she was visiting the 2004 set of his film.

Author Anne Mette Lundtofte has written an op-ed for The New Yorker that details the “dark side” of the work culture at Lars von Trier and Peter Aalbæk Jensen’s Danish film production company Zentropa. The company has been accused in the past of being home to “toxic masculinity” at the hands of von Trier and Aalbæk Jensen, but Lundtofte details new allegations in her first-person account of life inside Zentropa.
According to Lundtofte, who spent time at Zentropa while writing about the company for her book, “Zentropia,” von Trier and Jensen set up an initiation process of sorts that required employees to strip and go skinning dipping with them. Lundtofte refers to skinny dipping with von Trier and Aalbæk Jensen as a “Zentropa ritual.”

In her first televised interview, Harvey Weinstein’s former assistant Zelda Perkins alleges that the producer once tried to rape a Weinstein Company employee at the Venice Film Festival nearly twenty years ago. Per Variety, Perkins “signed a non-disclosure agreement in 1998 and received £125,000 from Miramax, but broke her silence on the BBC’s ‘Newsnight’ show, which was broadcast Tuesday night in Britain.”
“We were at the Venice Film Festival and he tried to rape her,” Perkins said on the news program. She alleges that the colleague was “in shock and also did not want anyone to find out about the matter,” but Perkins still confronted Weinstein herself. She said that he denied the accusation, and then “he swore on the life of his wife and his children, which was his best get-out-of-jail card that he used quite a lot.”

Producers from 11 nations claim they are “shocked and upset” by “the brazen display of toxic masculinity” they witnessed at an event hosted last month by Zentropa, the Danish production company founded by Peter Aalbæk Jensen and Lars von Trier. Peter Aalbaek Jensen, the founder and former CEO of the Danish film company Zentropa and frequent collaborator of director Lars von Trier, has become the latest prominent figure in the film world accused of sexual harassment. Nine former female employees said they had experienced what they called “degradation, sexual harassment and bullying” over the last several decades, the Danish newspaper Politiken reported on Saturday. Former female employees said that Jensen — who stepped down as Zentropa’s CEO in 2016 but still maintains a stake in the company — would grope their breasts and ask them to lie across his knee and...

Last month, Bjork alleged that she was the victim of “paralysing” sexual harassment by Lars von Trier during the making of “Dancer In The Dark.” The claims were vigorously denied by the director and his longtime producer Peter Aalbaek Jensen, who rather staggeringly responded that “As far as I remember, we were victims.” However, the allegations go much further, as do the mind-boggling responses by Jensen.

Lars von Trier has denied sexually harassing Icelandic artist Björk during the making of their 2000 musical drama “Dancer in the Dark.” Björk made headlines over the weekend when she revealed in a Facebook post that she had been sexually harassed by an unnamed Danish director. The singer did not name von Trier in her statement, but she has only starred in so many movies, with “Dancer in the Dark” being the only one from a Danish director.
“I became aware that it is a universal thing that a director can touch and harass his actresses at will and the institution of film allows it,” Björk wrote. “When i turned the director down repeatedly he sulked and punished me and created for his team an impressive net of illusion where i was framed as the difficult one.”

Projects participated in the Nordic festival’s works in progress event.
Ruben Ostlund got buyers and festival programmers hopping with excitement in Goteborg as he presented the first footage from his forthcoming fifth feature The Square during the festival’s work in progress pitches.
Ostlund screened about seven minutes from one scene of the new film, during which a controversial performance artist (played by Terry Notary) makes guests at a black-tie art gala very uncomfortable. “You know I love awkward situations,” the director said.
Goteborg’s audience of industry experts commented that they were impressed by the confidence of the unnerving scene, which showed Ostlund working on a bigger scale even than his last hit, Force Majeure.
At a festival session later for the public, Ostlund previewed a second clip from the film, in which a museum director (Claes Bang) delivers a self-centered video apology to a boy he had accused of being a thief.

European Film Forum: Producers also talk about “turning talent into industry” and learning from disruption in other sectors.
As the European Film Forum kicked off yesterday in Brussels, European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Gunther H Oettinger continued to reassure the film industry that the EU’s plans for a digital single market won’t spell disaster for the way films are financed and distributed today.
“We have a promising proposal for portability, without undermining the business model of territoriality,” he told the high-level audience at Brussels’ Bozar, as the largest-ever European Film Forum was held to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the EU’s Media programme.
Oettinger said he wants “to continue the dialogue” with industry experts especially as it relates to the EU’s digital single market plans, such as currently debated plans on the satcab directive about portability of catch-up TV.

“I don’t know if I can make more films, and that worries me,” Lars von Trier admitted at the end of 2014. In an interview at the time, the director revealed he was newly sober and was struggling to figure out how to work —all of his previous pictures (except "Nymphomaniac") had been produced while he was under some influence or other. The filmmaker has revealed he's back to work on his previously announced English language TV project "The House That Jack Built." Visiting the University Of Copenhagan, von Trier said he's still writing the 8-part series that producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen has described as “without precedent.” Even more, plot details have emerged, with show following a serial killer, but from the murderer's point of view. However, von Trier is still battling his ability to stay sober and also his wildly fluctuating emotions. “I drink moderately – probably not moderately enough,...
