Things were going badly on Saturday Night Live‘s 1980-1981 season, even before producer Jean Doumanian realized than the January 10, 1981 episode was headed towards disaster.
The previous season had seen the departure of Lorne Michaels and the entire cast, including founders Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, and Laraine Newman, as well as Bill Murray and Harry Shearer. Doumanian had tried to pitch her incoming group of comedians as the next generation for the hit series, but the performers quickly gained reputations as also-rans. Charlie Rocket was a less funny Chevy Chase, Gail Matthius an off-brand Jane Curtin, and so on.
But on that Jan. 10, 1981 episode, hosted by actor Ray Sharkey, things were going particularly badly. The skits went faster than anticipated and the show had five extra minutes to fill. So in an act of desperation, Doumanian followed the advice of writer Neil Levy and pushed 19-year-old featured player...

Legendary director John Carpenter first worked with the great character actor Keith David on his 1982 film The Thing (watch or buy it Here), which has gone on to earn a reputation as being one of the best horror movies ever made. Six years later, they collaborated again on the cult classic sci-fi thriller They Live (watch it Here)… and then, apparently, they went thirty-five years without seeing each other in person. Recently, they finally crossed paths again – and David marked the occasion by sharing a picture of their reunion on social media. You can check it out at the bottom of this article.
David didn’t provide any information on what brought them back together. Carpenter did recently reveal that he has directed a TV series called Suburban Screams, which filmed in Prague while he directed it from the comfort of his own home. It didn’t require much movement,...

One of the best things about James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies is their unwavering commitment to avoiding the easy path when it comes to character development. For as much as the biggest a-holes in the universe mature over the course of Gunn's trilogy, their personal journeys are far from linear. They frequently regress or wind up taking one step back for every two steps forward, only to dust themselves off and try again. It's how a talking raccoon became perhaps the most human character in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Such is also the case for Peter Jason "Star-Lord" Quill (Chris Pratt) and Gamora (Zoe Saldana). The two star-crossed lovers, who start out as an immature rogue and a disillusioned assassin, stumble their way towards a romance over the course of the first two "Guardians" movies, only for a combination of circumstances and their individual baggage to get in the way.

Thirty-five years after the release of director John Carpenter‘s 1988 cult classic They Live (watch it Here), the folks at Iconiq Studios are giving the concept of the film the card game treatment with the appropriately titled They Live: The Card Game. Iconiq is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to get the game out into the world, and they have already blown past their goal of $24,870. As of right now, the campaign has raised $42,836 – and there’s still 25 days to go!

The They Live episode of Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here is the text of Hatfield’s script:
I bet you thought when we started covering adaptations that we would be going to the Stephen King well more than a few times and believe me, we will. Today though, we are covering our second John Carpenter helmed adaptation after we discussed The Thing in the inaugural episode. While that one was pretty well known for being a more faithful adaptation of the book his hero Howard Hawks had adapted, not a lot of people may realize that They Live was sparked from a very short comic that adapted a very short story.

In last year’s Scream movie, which came to us from the filmmaking trio known as Radio Silence, there’s a moment where the characters realize the latest iteration of the Ghostface killer is “making a requel”. It breaks down like this: “You can’t just reboot a franchise from scratch anymore, but you can’t just do a straight sequel either. You’ve got to build something new. It’s got to be part of an on-going storyline. New main characters, yes, but supported by and related to legacy characters. Not quite a reboot, not quite a sequel.” Some prefer to term “legacyquel” over “requel”, but in a new interview with ComicBook.com Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett confirmed they’re planning to make an Escape from New York “requel”.
It was announced back in November that Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are attached to direct a new take on John Carpenter’s 1981 sci-fi...

A new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series has been released this morning, and in this episode we’re looking back at one of the least popular films to be directed by the legendary John Carpenter: the 2001 release Ghosts of Mars (watch it Here). Why didn’t Ghosts of Mars turn out to be another Carpenter classic? We try to figure that out in the video embedded above.
Directed by Carpenter from a script he wrote with Larry Sulkis, Ghosts of Mars has the following synopsis: Long inhabited by human settlers, the Red Planet has become the manifest destiny of an over-populated Earth. Nearly 640,000 people now live and work all over Mars, mining the planet for its abundant natural resources. But one of those mining operations has uncovered a deadly mother lode: a long-dormant Martian civilization whose warriors are systematically taking over the bodies of human intruders.

Update 2: It would seem that Radio Silence are indeed going to direct the new Escape from New York movie as Deadline has also confirmed the news, adding that original director John Carpenter is onboard as an executive producer.
Update: Our friends at Bloody Disgusting have been able to confirm that Radio Silence is in early talks with 20th Century Fox about directing an Escape from New York project, but Kurt Russell has not been contacted at this time.
The original article follows:
A remake of John Carpenter’s 1981 sci-fi action film Escape from New York (watch it Here) has been in development for many years, passing through the hands of filmmakers like Len Wiseman, Brett Ratner, Breck Eisner, Robert Rodriguez, and Leigh Whannell. No movie fundamentally changed the horror genre as much as the original Halloween. The Shape’s iconic debut inspired — and continues to inspire — countless other slashers. And while most of these movies are only vaguely similar to Halloween, such as Friday the 13th, others were more blatant in their design and execution.
The flicks in question aren’t always set on Halloween, the victim doesn’t have to be a babysitter, and the antagonist may or may not even be masked. However, despite the superficial differences, these ten examples are unmistakably influenced by Michael Myers’ first killing spree.
Nightmares in a Damaged Brain (1981)
Nightmares in a Damaged Brain (or simply Nightmare) has a well-earned reputation for being sleazy and gruesome. Romano Scavolini‘s previous work in pornography comes out often in this erotic slasher, but if there’s anything to take away from this exercise in lust and grisliness, the...

Having been a film fanatic my entire life I was thrilled when, in June 1982, a new magazine burst onto the scene and quickly caught my attention. Devoted exclusively to new and upcoming motion picture releases, Coming Attractions cost $2.50 per issue and was published on a bi-monthly basis. It didn’t last long, unfortunately, but I recall that a bit of an uproar occurred over the cover of the March/April 1983 issue which featured a half-naked Valerie Kaprisky in a promo for the Breathless remake. Seriously, back in the day who complained about a beautiful naked woman on a magazine cover??
In one of the earlier issues, there was an article published about an upcoming horror film entitled Trick or Treats starring David Carradine. I don’t recall the film ever opening in my area and wondered whatever happened to it...

It’s amazing how overlooked some actors are when their accomplishments in the business easily outstrip a lot of other, more well-known actors who have gotten by on looks and a few big roles, but it’s also kind of comforting that such people are still there. Peter Jason, born Peter Edward Ostling, has been in the business for decades now and has taken on so many roles that it’s hard to put them all into a single article without rambling on and on. But the fact is that Peter has been the kind of guy who wasn’t bothered by working from

It's been a couple of years since we've seen anything new from writer/director Pearry Reginald Teo but Teo is back with a new horror movie that looks particularly promising.
The Assent stars Robert Kazinsky as Joel, a single father whose son is not quite right. As a last-ditch effort, he employs the help of a priest who advises Joel that his son has been marked by the devil and the only way to save him is through an exorcism.
Yes, it's another religious horror film but The Assent seems a bit more interesting than the average possession movie - if only because of the fact that Kazinsky, a solid actor, is in it. The movie also stars Peter Jason, Florence Faivre, and Caden Dragomer.

Tagline: "To the Darkness, We Reqlinquish Our Souls..." The Assent is an exorcism themed horror film. From director Pearry Reginald Teo (Witchville), a new poster has been released for the film, courtesy of production house Bleiberg Entertainment. The graphic shows a child without pupils and looking skyward. And, assent is a Catholic word, in which a possessed person gives consent to an inhabiting demon. As well, this title stars: Robert Kazinsky ("True Blood"), Peter Jason (Escape from L.A.) and Hannah Ward. Being compared to The Sixth Sense and The Exorcist, a preview for The Assent is hosted here. The long synopsis, for the film, mentions three phases of possession. First there is the initial possession, followed by the affliction and finally the assent. At each phase, the demon grows in power, over its host. An exorcism takes place. But, Father Lambert (Jason) may not be able to save the young boy,...

“Oh, yeah, ooh, ahhh, that’s how it always starts – then later there’s running and screaming.” That’s the philosophy behind every movie in the Jurassic Park franchise, summed up in a nutshell by Jeff Goldblum’s Dr Ian Malcolm in The Lost World (1997). The latest addition to the franchise – a sequel to 2015′s Jurassic World and the fifth instalment in the series overall – sticks closely to that basic formula, while simultaneously trying to make things a little different this time round. Unfortunately, when it comes to provoking both wonder (the oohs and ahhhs) and terror (the screams), there’s a definite sense that the franchise has been hit by the law of diminishing returns.

They Live marked the end of an amazing run for John Carpenter, before his creative decline in the 1990s and beyond. Well, it had to end somewhere – and what a brilliantly bold way to bow out.
As a teenager, John Nada (“Rowdy” Roddy Piper) ran away from home, from a violent father. He’s been a drifter ever since. He shows up in L.A. with a set of tools and sleeping bag, hoping just to make it to his next hot meal. At work he meets Frank (Keith David), who hasn’t seen his family in six months. Frank brings him to a settlers’ site, where the impoverished underclass eke a living. Overlooking the site is a church, with some very strange comings and goings. John checks it out, and discovers...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains details of Tuesday night’s episode of NCIS.
The time has come. Fans of the beloved character of Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette) gathered around their televisions with a box of Kleenex to say farewell to NCIS‘s favorite goth forensic scientist after 15 seasons. In the second part of Perrette’s two-part farewell titled “Two Steps Back,” we see the fate of Reeves (Duane Henry) and our dear Abby as they were held at gunpoint in the previous episode.
A quick refresher: last week’s episode titled “One Step Forward” centered on a vet named Sara Carter who goes to Gibbs (Mark Harmon) to investigate the murder of her mother after she thinks they convicted the wrong man. Meanwhile, Abby wins a dinner reservation to The Cooler, a hip and boujee restaurant that is impossible to get into. After everyone bribes her with gifts to be her plus one,...

“The Other Side of the Wind,” Orson Welles’ final unfinished film, is finally approaching completion. According to Welles fan site Wellesnet, a cut of the film screened for a select group of Hollywood elite Tuesday in Santa Monica, 42 years after principal photography finished. An attendee at the screening described it as more than a rough cut, but not a final product. Filmmakers in attendance at the screening included Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, Peter Bogdanovich, and Rian Johnson.
Last year, Netflix announced it was acquiring the movie and funding its completion, which has been overseen by producers Frank Marshall and Filip Jan Rymsza. Bogdanovich, who was charged by Welles with finishing the film in the event of his death, is an executive producer.

Poor John Carpenter. Like nearly all of the truly great horror filmmakers, his movies are destined to be misunderstood in their time, only finding the proper appreciation several years after the fact when the rest of the world is finally able to catch up to what he’s doing. It’s not always the case, of course, as he has had a handful of commercial hits; for many years, his breakthrough movie Halloween was the most successful independent film ever made. It was the rare instance in which audiences were tuned in to what Carpenter was doing at the time he was doing it. Most of his other great films—and he has more great films than almost any other director working in the genre—took years to connect with the public. Don’t blame Carpenter for that. He’s a man ahead of his time.

I have a shaky relationship with Village of the Damned. On the one hand, it’s a pretty piss-poor movie in a lot of ways. It has a lot going against it. It’s a remake, the acting is ludicrous, and some of the decisions made by the characters are just mind-numbing. On the other hand, it is a John Carpenter movie, and as we’ve all learned by this point — with the exception of The Ward — even a bad John Carpenter movie is better than a lot of filmmakers’ good movies. So yes, it’s a ridiculous movie, and yes, it’s really easy to get a group of friends together, and throw this on for the purpose of laughing at it, and yes, this movie turns Christopher Reeve — a man famous to most of us because of his portrayal of Superman, humanity’s symbol of hope — into a...

By 1995, it was safe to say that John Carpenter’s best days as a filmmaker were behind him. He had made the last of his many masterpieces one year earlier with 1994’s In the Mouth of Madness and would, in fact, direct only four more theatrical features in his career (as of this writing, at least). It would be difficult to argue for any of the four as being his best work.
Though his filmography boasts a handful of detours, most were movies Carpenter made to demonstrate his ability to do something other than horror—the romantic drama of Starman, the would-be commercial FX comedy Memoirs of an Invisible Man. He’s only ever made two movies that feel like dispassionate for-hire gigs. One is The Ward. The other is Village of the Damned, new to Blu-ray from Scream Factory.

John Carpenter celebrated his 68th birthday a few days ago, so it felt like a no-brainer that I should cover one of his films this week. We here at Fsr are big Carpenter fans and have already covered several of his films on Commentary Commentary — Halloween, The Fog, Escape from New York, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live — but while those titles are beloved I’m turning this week to one of his less-respected titles that I happen to love. 1987’s Prince of Darkness is a fun mix of gory horror and metaphysical mumbo-jumbo, and while some sketchy acting hurts it the film as a whole is terrifically creepy entertainment. The score is fantastic, the film ends strong, and the cast includes a bevy of Carpenter favorites including Donald Pleasence, Victor Wong, and Dennis Dun. Keep reading to see what I heard on the Prince of Darkness commentary. Prince of Darkness...

Joining Kevin Michael Richardson as Groot and Trevor Devall as Rocket in the upcoming Disney Xd Guardians Of The Galaxy animated series is Will Friedle (Boy meets World) as Peter Jason Quill, aka Star Lord. Like the others, Friedle has plenty of experience voicing characters in comic-based shows, having played the likes of the Caped Crusade in Batman Beyond, Lion-o in Thundercats, Bumblebee in Transformers: Prime and Deadpool in Ultimate Spider-Man. Plus, we have David Sobolov returning as Drax. A lot of fans expected this as Sobolov has previously provided the voice for the character in Ultimate Spider-Man and Marvel’s Avengers Assemble. Only Gamora left as far as the main team goes, so we'll surely find out who'll be voicing her pretty soon. Marvel will produce the series, with Alan Fine, Dan Buckley, Joe Quesada and Jeph Loeb on board as as executive producers.

Star-Lord and Captain America are two of our most beloved Marvel characters. Both superheroes are kind and flawed, and both have tough moral grounds; just a few of the reasons we love them. Above all else, though, Star-Lord and Captain America both fight for causes of good, which makes it extra awesome when the actors behind them doubly back up those sentiments. And that is exactly what they did with their latest, most-heartwarming Super Bowl bet where the loser has to pay a visit to a children's hospital. Upon finding out his team, the New England Patriots, were to face Chris Pratt's (Star-Lord/Peter Jason Quill) Seattle Seahawks in the 2015 Super Bowl, Chris Evans (Captain America/Steve Rogers) took to Twitter to vocalize his opposition. Now that the first film is over a week old, everyone is starting to ask about the sequel. Welcome comic nerds, to the latest review from Cbm user anthonyEstark. Today, I'll be taking a look at Marvel's latest release, Guardians of the Galaxy. This is one of those films that seemed like a great risk. But was it good or bad? That's what I'm here to decide. Check out my review below! Unlike many of their other films, Marvel really relied the story solely on the characters of the film. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, as many films such as previous release Captain America: The Winter Soldier was centered around the plot, while in this film the characters Make the plot. They are the sole being of the film, and without any one of them, the film wouldn't be the same. Chris Pratt (The Lego Movie) takes the lead as Peter Jason Quill a.k.a Star-Lord, and pulls off the bounty hunter's role so perfectly, it isn't even funny (actually,...

Prep for the Assault on Precinct 13 Blu-ray Release by Counting Down the Top 10 John Carpenter Films
The title "Master of Horror" is thrown around quite a bit. Often it’s warranted but sometimes not so much. In the case of filmmaker John Carpenter, however, you cannot heap enough accolades upon him.
Although he is one of the forerunners of the modern slasher sub-genre of horror, Carpenter’s credits go far beyond that. He is not only a true master of horror, but an incredibly diverse and talented filmmaker.
